The Southern African Railways Association (SARA) proudly announces the appointment of Mr. Nixon Dlamini, CEO Eswatini Railways, as the new President of SARA, and Ms. Chelesile Malele, Acting General Manager of Botswana Railways as SARA Vice President (represented by Mr Amon Sefawe in picture ).

They will lead the Association for the next two years as we continue to advance regional rail integration, connectivity, and development across the SADC region. The elections were held today during the SARA Board Meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mbabane, Eswatini.

Their appointment signals a strong commitment to driving progress on the regional railway corridors, strengthening collaboration among member states, and delivering a future-ready railway system.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the outgoing President, Mr. Hishaam Emeran, Group CEO PRASA Group, for his dedicated leadership and invaluable contribution during his term.

With the new leadership in place, SARA remains committed to enhancing rail transport as a key driver of regional growth and connectivity.

We are proud to announce the appointment of Raymond Shoniwa as the new Executive Director of the Southern African Railways Association (SARA). With over 20 years of experience in the railway industry and a distinguished career in finance and operations, Shoniwa brings visionary leadership at a pivotal time for rail in Africa.

Raymond previously served as Chief Finance Officer, Company Secretary, and General Manager of Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (Pvt)—a successful public-private rail operation in Zimbabwe and a subsidiary of Grindrod Rail. His tenure was marked by bold expansion initiatives, including partnerships with the National Railways of Zimbabwe and cross-border operations into Zambia operating between Livingstone and Ndola. During his tenure as General Manager he also created a market for excess wagons held by Botswana Railways.

A Master of Business Administration graduate from the University of Suffolk, Raymond’s earlier career spanned senior accounting roles at Ernst & Young and KPMG, alongside serving as President of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (Southern Region). His blend of finance acumen and operational insight will be instrumental in driving regional integration, market share growth, and access to capital for SARA members.

SARA Master Class: Rail Transport as the Backbone of Economic Development

The Southern African Railways Association (SARA) is hosting a 3-Day Master Class on “Rail Transport Efficacy to National and Regional Economic Development,” from 4-6 December 2024 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Designed for transport ministers, policymakers, national railway leaders, and industry executives, this Master Class will explore how strategic rail infrastructure can drive economic growth, facilitate trade, and strengthen regional connectivity across Africa.

The programme covers essential topics, including the economic impact of rail transport on job creation and market access, strategies for sustainable rail infrastructure development, and insights from case studies on successful rail projects. Participants will also address challenges and opportunities in integrating rail with other transport modes, financing strategies, and the role of public-private partnerships in building resilient rail networks.

Led by industry experts, the Master Class offers a blend of presentations, interactive discussions, and real-world case study analyses, giving participants actionable insights to apply in their regions.
