TAPONG

Tapong means cultural and traditional cap or sometimes refers to as crown headdress. There are four type of tapong available in our stocks – Tapong Inoc, Tapong Sec and Tapong Mahkota, all are for lady, while Tapong Beluko is the only cap for man. All type of tapong is available in various model and size respectively. All type of tapong has the same objective, purpose and usage. BELANYAT

Belanyat is a traditional briefcase in cylinder shape. It’s available in all model and size – large, medium and small, etc. It’s made of beads or sometime rattans. The objective, purpose and usage of Belanyat are all the same – to put or keep your valuable things. Many Borneo natives or other people are proud upon owning this briefcase as they felt being unique having it along with them on their journey’s destination. PARANG-ILANG

Parang-Ilang means, the traditional sword of the Kenyah. It’s available in various model, size and pattern. Generally, it’s classified into two categories – Parang-Ilang Inoc and Parang-Ilang Buk. Parang-Ilang Inoc is fully decorated with colourful beads while Parang-Ilang Buk is beautifully decorated with traditional carved of Kenyah and accessorized with fur and carved bone, making it the most unique and classic. – http://www.nyo.lot.my/

BETAENG

This is a broad belt used by maiden at their waist/hip/buttock. It’s a traditional belt of the Kenyah all made of beads. There are two type/categories of belt – Betaeng Kenya and Betaeng Aloc. BENING

Bening or babe carrier is inherited generation to generation since the early civilization of Kenyah. It’s a very useful device to transport their young one moving from one place to another destination. Kenyah treasured this device very much, hence it’s beautifully built and made. TA’A

Ta’a means a set of maiden’s costume comprising both shirt costume and cloth strip costume. Shirt costume is called Ta’a Sapai while cloth strip costume is called Ta’a Keluma. Ta’a comes into two categories/types – Ta’a Inoc and Ta’a Belaep. Ta’a Inoc is charmingly decorated made from colourful beads, making it the most difficult and expensive to produce, while Ta’a Belaep is also beautifully decorated and made from tiny shining and twinkling devices, hence gave it name Belaep which means twinkling. ULAENG

HONG @ SA’ONG

Hong or Sa’ong is a broad cap/hat, customarily used by Kenyah during work performance especially during farming season and other field works to protect them from weather’s uncertainty such as strong sunlight. Besides, it’s also being made as decoration in the guestroom of the longhouse and charmingly exhibited in the sitting room. Sa’ong is being made into many model, sizes and patterns. A tiny sitting pad used during olden day especially during head hunting era. It’s also used during work performance such as farming and other field works. Tabin is specially made for man only. Rice Wine! Tuak! Burak! Or Talak! … Whatever you call or name it, it’s still the same stuff. What we’re for sure, Borneo and its inhabitants are very synonym with Borneo Rice Wine. Tourists that came to Borneo have tasted it and always said... “Wow! The wine is very good!” That phrase is very familiar to inhabitants of Borneo or… is the expression just a downright commendation? Anyway…let forget about that. What we are concerned is what we’re going to expound next.

Hey! It’s a must for you to know that...all indigenous in Borneo are synonyms with this terminology… the Borneo Wine. What about Borneo wine’s recipes? Hem! Their cousins from Sabah called it as Talak. The sounds of calling it also come with parallel sound. Borneo’s indigenous inherit these from their great ancestors. As such, Borneo Wine is not specific to any ethnic but belonged to all Borneo indigenous groups. The skills and techniques of processing the wine might varied from each ethnic group but generally the process of producing wine is very much the same and similar. The taste of wine produced by them is also not much different from each ethnic. Any ethnic successfully produced good quality of wine will normally become famous of producing Borneo Wine and than tends to champion Borneo Wine as belonged to them alone. Tak apa... ia taklah sampai jadi sengketa pula.

As I come from the same background, Borneo Wine is not new to me. I have tasted the wine at my early age and even observed and watched my parent prepared and produced wine. At one stage of my career, then I served as civil servant, I happened to visit Iban Longhouse, Kayan Longhouse, Kenyah Longhouse, Lun Bawang Longhouse and many other ethnics living side by side along river basins in Sarawak. That shows to us the basic similarity the cultures of Borneo inhabitants being shared together and how Borneo Wine plays it important role which indirectly promotes Borneo Wine to the outside world. As 1Malaysia concept is popularly gains it ground amongst Malaysian, we are proud to share the popular folk dances of Sarawak, particularly the Kenyah Folk Dances and Musics which had been synonym and popularly become identity of ethnic Malaysians leaving in Sarawak.

Who doesn’t know folk music by the name of sape? The instrument music sape is very well-known internationally because of its beautiful and exotic melody sound. It is the most popular musical instrument being invented and produced by the indigenous Kenyah which still flourishes and has made its presence strongly felt both at home and internationally. Sape is played in various tones and it is very much ancient by the way of its native, indigenous and nature backgrounds.

It is beautifully played together with its native dance, the Kenyah Cultural Folk Dances. The dances are danced in various variations which are very much of nature beauties. The Kenyah, which consists of many tribes, have the most colourful costumes. In most of their longhouses, you will find ornaments and accessories, which have been inherited from their descendants, are proudly displayed and jealously guarded by the owners. The skill of beadwork, passed on from generation to generation, has resulted in a kaleidoscopic assortment of colours and designs in their crafts. The important role the hornbills play in the daily lives of the Kenyah also comes to life in their most popular Cultural Ngajat Dances. The dancers clutch clusters of hornbill feathers in their hands and mimic a bird in flight, swooping and soaring. Movements are graceful and flowing.

The accompanying music which is provided by the sape is the most popular musical instruments in Borneo as well internationally. A lute-type, four-stringed instrument, it produces a rich and delicate tone. It is normally made and carved out from a single tree trunk. Traditionally, the four strings are made of split rattans.
