Nepal Telecom, national largest telecommunication service provider has announced free SMS service to its customers effective from Sunday (29th Shrawan) to Tuesday (31st Shrawan) within its networks.

Why we do internet strike?
Youths who are concerning about the current situation of Kathmandu is organizing the internet strike tomorrow. Here are some main issues which are concerned for the Internet Strike.

We all know how fertile the land of valley is. This relates us with food security and proper use of land. The remaining agricultural and fertile land of the valley must be protected and utilized properly for food of our country. Introduce Land Use Act in Nepal.

Control the un-managed new towns and new settlements created by Real Estates and Land Mafias that is causing the Kathmandu to sprawl and making it more and more messy, focus more on making cities in other regions of Nepal.

To preserve, protect, promote and develop the ancient civilization of Nepa valley. Heritage preservation including heritage towns of the valley should be protected and well preserved. We need to utilize the Indigenous knowledge.

We are against construction of outer ringroad and satellite towns, as well as un-justified road expansions in the valley. We do not agree the fast Track Project alignment. We do not need outer ringroad and satellite towns which has more negative impacts to the valley, and contributes in sprawl and dis-management of the valley. We need to focus on development of existing infrastructures and development of in-developed parts of Nepal

Nepal Telecom Launched 4G Services in Kathmandu and Pokhara Today

Nepal Telecom has launched fourth generation (4G) service in Kathmandu and Pokhara from January 1st 2017. The state-owned utility launched 4G in a bid to provide faster and higher quality data services to its subscribers.

The internet services will be faster as the current speed of mobile data transfer is 14 MB/second, while after the launch, the speed will increase to 35 MB/second, claims the utility.

The 4G service will be extended to other cities too, NT claims.

NT users will be able to user 4G service on their mobiles from the first day of its launch. Though iphone has 4G-compatible models, the service will be inaccessible for iphone users because Apple has not turned on location enable feature for NT networks. The utility recently asked Apple to turn on the feature. But enabling is expected to take sometime, meaning the service will not be immediately available to iphone users.

The private operator, NCell, has already had the feature enabled, though it has not yet received permission for operating 4G service.

As Rupchandra Maharjan clicked the girls picture near the Fishling suspension bridge between Gorkha and Chitwan, the picture of young #Tarkariwali (Vegetable Seller) has gone viral in Social Media and the hardwork and beauty of girl has been appreciated. She is an inspirational figure with the simpliness and for her choosing this profession.

The photographs originally were posted by Rupchandra Maharjan. He clicked her in the Gorkha Dhanda area and now the girl has made it to the trends with a hashtag of #inspiration.

There are posts about her which captions, ”the beautiful tarkariwali, an inspiration’.

The identity of the girl has not been disclosed yet and we have not been able to independently verify the claims of Maharjan.

Participants Should produce and showcase a prototype system (e.g. mobile app, web app, maps, data visualizations) that makes use of OpenStreetMap data in Pokhara. There are no limitations on what should be or what it should look like. Here are the things to keep in mind while developing the prototype:

Keep the prototype simple, you should be able to easily iterate over and make changes to the prototype.
Make the prototype functional, you should be able to explain and demonstrate what the idea/product might eventually accomplish.

The judging panel for this competition will comprise of people from Regional Environmental Officers of the U.S. Department of State from around the world.

Award

The five finalists will have an opportunity to showcase their prototype in front of local leaders and officials of the U.S. Department of State from around the world. The finalists will also have an opportunity to have lunch and network with the participants of the Secondary Cities in Action Workshop being held in Pokhara. The winner will receive a three month mentorship under the guidance of a local organization relevant to their prototype and Kathmandu Living Labs. During these three months mentoring organizations will provide support to develop the prototype into a full fledged solution.

A full fledged solution is not expected within the given time frame.

4G service likely by September

Nepali telecom operators might be able to introduce 4G service by September.

Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) - the telecommunications sector regulator -- has made amendment to the existing Radio Frequency Policy, allowing telecom operators to launch 4G service. The draft of the policy, which is now at the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC), will be passed within next 10 days, according to MoIC Secretary Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.

If the amendment is passed within 10 days, telecom operators will be able to launch 4G service within September.

Nepali telecom operators have been saying that they will be able to roll out 4G services within two months of receiving permit from the government.

“We are desperate to introduce 4G service in Nepal and enhance users' Internet using experience. I believe that we will be able to begin this service within two months after getting government's permission,” Simon Perkins, managing director of Ncell, told Republica.

It has been many months since the telecom operators Nepal Telecom and Ncell sought NTA's nod to launch 4G service. However, NTA was not in a position to issue permission without making amendment to the existing Radio Frequency Policy.

“We have made amendment to Radio Frequency Policy, allowing operators to roll out 4G service. The draft of the amended policy has been sent to MoIC for approval,” Purushottam Khanal, information officer of NTA, told Republica. “We are hopeful that the amendment will be passed soon by the ministry soon, allowing telecom operators to launch 4G service in Nepal.”

The revised policy has to be approved by the Radio Frequency Policy Committee under MoIC which is headed by Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai.

Officials say the fresh amendment to Radio Frequency Policy allows telecom operators to upgrade their service under 'technology neutrality' policy. This means that operators can launch 4G service with existing 1,800 MHz frequency which is being used to provide 3G service.

Officials of NT say it takes at least 3-4 months to begin 4G service after getting regulator's permission. “We can provide 4G service with our existing infrastructure for 3G. But we will need radio network equipment and core network equipment,” Dilli Adhikari, joint spokesperson of NT, said. “As the procurement process is lengthy, it will take at least 3-4 months.”

Adhikari, however, added that the process can be simplified by adopting 'fast track' provision envisioned in the recently amended Public Procurement Act (PPA).
