We look forward to seeing you all on Friday at the Capstone Screening, which begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building on UCF’s Main Campus (12400 Apollo Circle, Orlando, FL).  ”Sasquatch With Muscles” is tentatively scheduled to screen at at the end of the screening (around 10:45 p.m.), though we strongly encourage everyone to attend the entire screening and support independent film!  Also, due to the number of people who are attending the event, we recommend getting there a little early if you’d like to snag a good seat.

There will be an intermission with food and drinks for sale, as well as free appetizers.  Parking is available in the Visual Arts Building Student D parking lot (adjacent to the building that the screening will take place in).

“Capstones, the word literally meaning “crowing achievement,” are the most involved films we undertake in school. While that’s not a requirement, it’s typical to invest the most time, money, and energy into one’s last film school film. For many of us, it’s the last project we’ll direct, produce, or photograph for some time as we each go our separate ways, trying to find out where we want to apply our education. I plan to move to Los Angeles, California and pursue a career in film production.

My friend and classmate Marco Cordero just finished directing his Capstone yesterday entitled Sasquatch with Muscles. During the shoot, I helped his producer/deity Michelle Roca with organizing and planning the day-to-day activities on set. My role on the project was “Production Manager,” though Michelle’s role as a student film Producer encompasses more of the real duties of a Production Manager. Michelle and I decided early on that my role on Marco’s film would be more of an assistant to Michelle, trying to make her job easier by doing the small but numerous tasks that quickly accumulate on set. Often times I’d steal her phone and make sure that all her text messages, voice mails, and production-related emails were responded to so that she could concentrate on more important issues like makingridiculous comments call sheets.

Students help other students on set without any monetary compensation.

On a good set like Marco’s, there’s a person that’s in charge of Craft Services, i.e., food. Food is the student equivalent to a paycheck. The better the food, the happier and more productive the crew. Craft Services is a hard position to fill on a student film shoot because you have to find someone who’s willing to do it but also someone who is talented and intelligent enough to get the job done. Michelle did just that by selecting her friend Nils Taranger. In fact, he was in charge of my capstone’s Craft Services and did an equally wonderful job. I think it’s time for a promotion.

Another form of compensation on set is networking. Working on someone else’s set is the best way to make friends and recruit people to work on your projects when it comes time. This is undoubtedly the most important thing to do while in film school. I wish I could have done more of this over the past few years, but having a part-time job makes this difficult.

Everyone on Marco’s set seemed to work together in a professional and intelligent way. When problems arose, so did people to take care of them. It was an educational experience too, as I would ask Marco many questions in an effort to steal his brain.”

Buffalo's

After a lot of different gun/ammo/pawn shops, we’ve narrowed our gun shop options down to two places: Buck’s Gun Rack and Buffalo Bill’s Shoot Store.  Buck’s has an amazing exterior that would really radiate at night on film, but we need to be inside for 8-10 hours, and they aren’t able to help us out with the interiors.  In the event that we needed a back-up, I went scouting last week and found Buffalo Bill’s!  A small little gun shop out by Stardust Cafe, shooting there would save us the hour commute.  The only issue: the exterior of Buffalo’s isn’t exactly what we’re looking for.  It’s part of a strip mall and there is a tiny window, making our planned effect of the gun shot lighting up the store impossible.  So, the master plan.  Approach Buck’s about letting us film their exteriors, only having us enter to set up the FX (about 2-3 hours total), and approach Buffalo’s about filming inside for an entire day when they’re closed (Sundays).  It would have to be day for night, but with the limited windows (only the one on the front door), this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.  Either way, both interiors would work out (should Buck’s change their mind…) to our advantage since there is enough space for dolly track and the production design is practically done for us.

I have meetings with both shops today, so we’ll see how it turns out!  Crossing our fingers over here.

We are extremely grateful for the Grant, and look forward to delivering a final cut that reflects the gracious donations made on behalf of local film vendors. We are giving ourselves a solid two months of pre-production to fully prepare for a film of this scope. Marco plans on utilizing a storyboarding program to calculate exact times, lenses, and blocking so that when it comes time to shoot, he knows exactly what he wants. Now, we need all the help we can to get the ball rolling on this production. Time to get excited!
