Hello, Sassy Babies readers!! My name is Ashley and I am a nap-time seamstress and crafting addict!

I love sewing and creating for my 3-year old, 2-year old and 5-month old and
I am excited to share with you a short and sweet tutorial on making banners! Handmade touches sprinkled throughout our house make it feel more like a home and certainly bring smiles to my kiddos!

I always find our house to be a little sad and in need of some cheer after we take all the Christmas decorations down...so if you're like me and want to add a splash of color and some fun to your late winter decor, maybe you'll find this little tutorial helpful!! I just love the look of banners in a room or entryway--just a touch of spunk and liveliness! Each of my kids' rooms and our playroom/sewing room (okay, it's mostly my sewing room now!) have a banner (or two!) and if you've visited Sassy Babies in the past, you may have seen some banners I made for the shop a few years ago! Banners are also great for birthday parties and festive occasions! And best of all, they are sooo easy to make! So let's get started!! We just had a baby boy and after two girls, the nursery desperately needs some boy decor, so I'll be making a banner for his room in this tutorial!
you will need:
-a sewing machine (all you need is a simple straight stitch, so you don't even have to have a fancy machine!)
-fabric (yardage amount will depend on how many different prints you'd like to incorporate and how long you'd like your banner to be...rough guess--if you have 1/4 yard of 6 prints, you'll be able to create a 3 foot banner (9 yards) aren't these just the cutest fabrics by the way!
-one package of double fold bias tape (or two if you'd like a longer banner!) i love making my own bias tape and getting to use fun prints but store bought packages work just as well!

-thread in the same color as your bias tape
-pinking shears (if you like the jagged edge look to your pennants)
-I like to use my rotary cutter, straight edge and cutting mat, but those aren't necessary
-a room or wall or party that needs a little pop!
alright, here we go!!
-I decided to do without the pinking shears this time around and just made straight edge triangles for my pennants... so layout one of your fabrics and cut a triangle in the shape and size you'd like...for this banner, I cut my triangle like so: about 10 inches per side.
-once you have that piece cut, you want to be sure all the pennants are that same size, so fold that pennant in half and use it as your template to cut all your other pennants out of each of your other fabrics... cut, cut, cut until you have all the pennants you would like! I like to divide them by prints and then stack them up in the order I'd like them to be positioned in the banner...

-unfold your bias tape and insert your first pennant an inch in from the bias tape edge.
-fold the edge of the tape inside itself so no raw edges are exposed. pin.
- then pin your pennant into the fold, making sure to catch the entire top of the pennant and both sides of the bias tape.

-continue pinning the pennants into the bias tape...you don't have to pin them all in at once, but can pin then sew and then pin again until the banner is complete.
-finish the end of the banner in the same way you began it...by enclosing the raw edges--just fold the bias tape in on itself and sew to secure with back stitching. Once you reach the length you'd like--you're done!! Go find a wall and hang up that beautiful banner!! I usually use push pins to secure the banner to walls or ceilings!

I am so excited to be guest blogging for Sassy Baby.

My name is Tracy Rushton and I am a “do-it-yourselfer” and “Craftaholic” all rolled up into one little person.

I love sharing crafts with others and over the past 20 years have taught sewing, tole painting and cake decorating classes to friends, neighbors and anyone who would sign up and listen to me. However, my true passion is scrapbooking and paper crafts. (There is just something about the smell of paper that sets my heart a flutter.) I have worked, designed and taught for a few of the Local Scrapbook stores in the Salt Lake and Bountiful areas and also in Wyoming.

I have been married to my best friend for almost 24 years and we have 6 children, although most are teens or young adults now. We have 5 girls, who let me create all sorts of girly items for them; and 1 boy who tolerates the “craftiness” as best he can. Our home is usually crazy and a little chaotic at times but I wouldn’t change a thing.

I hope you enjoy these fun little Valentine cards and envelopes. They were a lot of fun to put together for you.

PS My baby (who is 11) can't wait to make some for her own class party this year :)

Products used to make 12 cards and envelopes: We R Memory Keepers Love stuck Line

Additional Supplies:

White, pink, blue and green cardstock

ATG Gun or other tape runner (glue sticks will not work well)

Scop-pal or trimmer with score blade

Scissors

Optional Supplies:

1” Circle punch

Heart punch

Ribbon or other embellishments

Instructions

1. Start by cutting apart the tags.

2. If you would like you can decorate the fronts with more heart punch outs, ribbon or ink.

3. With staples or glue, add ribbon or circle cut outs to make tabs.

4. You can add a 3.5 x 2.5 scrap of paper to the back to leave a message if you would like

5. to make the envelope cut a piece of cardstock 3.5 x 7.5

6. score at 2.25” and again at 5.5” on the long side of the card stock

7. Use a circle punch and punch a half circle in the middle section of the envelope. (optional)

8. fold on score lines

9. turn envelope over, run tape on the right side of the middle section (across from the circle cut out) and the bottom.

10. Fold top of envelope down and then the bottom up.

11. Decorate the front of each envelope using strips of printed cardstock, heart punches, ribbon and other embellishments.

That’s all there is to it. Decorate all your envelopes, slip the tags in. Have your child sign his/her name and even add a message.

I
have 2 small girls (3 & 1) that are my pride and joy. My husband is
UBER busy and I am grateful for him! We love the suburb of Salt Lake
City that we live in. I enjoy reading, gardening, shopping, and crafting
(not in any
particular order).

I was trying to think up a cute handmade gift I could give my girls for Valentines Day and I thought of a Tic Tac Toe game made from felt. I knew it wouldn't be hard at all.

I bought some felt sheets at the local Hobby Lobby then I also went over to the fabric department and got a larger piece of felt for the board. I also bought a cute ribbon to use for the lines on the board.

I used my trusty AccuQuilt machine and the Heart die to cut out all my hearts so they would be perfect looking. Then I just printed out a GIANT "X" and used it as a template for my X's.

I cut my game board 15" by 15" so I was able to sew ribbon on every 5" for the game lines.

Rather than just one line down the middle I sewed down both sides so it would be flat'ish.

I wanted there to be a little bit of weight to the game pieces so I put some rice inside and sewed up the edges.

I love the Heart pieces, I hand stitched a white heart in the middle to give it some contrast.

My felt that I used for my game board was a bit wrinkly.

I don't love that but not sure if you can iron felt??

I can't wait to give it to my girls and see if I can teach them the concept of Tic Tac Toe!

Pass the Days: Winter Activities

The holidays are over. Come on. You know you want to. Breathe in a deep sigh of relief.

But, wait. . . Now what? The new presents have worn off their new toy novelty. The kids are cooped up inside on the weekends, not quite brave enough to face the cold and going stir crazy. (Although, if you live in Utah, it's not quite so bad as you would usually think.) So, what to do to pass the time?

If you are dying for some spring, get your kids to help you create some terrariums to put in a sunny window. All you need are a few empty jars, dirt, rocks and either seeds or seedlings. This is great if your kids want to prove to you that they are responsible: make them in charge of keeping those plants alive! Get further details from Scissors and Steam.

If you are ambitious and need to warm up the kitchen, you could try making some soft pretzels with the kids. Your kids will be amazed when they come out of the oven and they have turned brown! You can find more details at Flexible Dreams.

And when the pretzels are done, pull out the best hot chocolate you and your children have ever had. If you want your children to love you forever, make this crockpot hot chocolate for them. This recipe comes from Mrs. Happy Homemaker, and my family praises the day that I discovered this recipe. It really is the best hot chocolate that you have tasted.

And maybe with the promise of some hot chocolate, those kids who aren't so interested in playing in the cold, just might venture out now!

Last Minute Christmas Crafts

Has winter break hit yet? If not, it will soon! What are you going to do with your kids? If you are looking for some fun, last minute Christmas crafts, you have come to the right place.

This adorable cereal candy cane comes from Creative Connections for kids. All you need is some colorful cereal and pipe cleaners. Just shape a pipe cleaner like a candy cane, show the kids how to string the cereal on and let them go! This one should keep the kids happy for at least a half an hour!

If you are looking for last minute gifts for Grandma and Grandpa, check out these cute star ornaments from Meg + Andy. This a fun idea: all you need are some cardboard stars (thank you cereal boxes), glitter or any other decorating material and pictures of your adorable children. Let the kids have at the stars with glue, paint, glitter and then paste the pictures on. Grandma and Grandpa will love them!

One more cute and easy idea: make some Popsicle stick stars! These are from La-La's Home Daycare. There are a couple of ways you could make these. One: you can get out the paints and let the kids have at it. OR, you can find the colored popsicle sticks and then decorate from there. And you don't have to use buttons. You could use fuzzballs, glitter, beads, etc. Use what you have and let the kids go crazy!

So, don't go crazy these next couple of weeks with no school, just get crafty!

Do you have empty prescription containers?

Then, keep reading. You're going to love this!

I have the hardest time throwing away prescription containers.

I have about 25 of them hidden away in a craft drawer.

I knew there had to be some good purpose for them after holding our medications.

Other than using them to store quarters for your purse/car

and using them to hold dice, thumb tacks, and paper clips for the office,

I couldn't find anything useful to use them for.

Then, inspiration hit!

at 4:00am, when most of my inspiration hits.

I made these

Little Activity Containers

for my toddler.

I used 2x4 inch printable labels to label each one.

I made one with cars, stickers, squishies, animals, crayons, army men, etc.

I spray painted the lids black and then found fun objects to put inside.

You can use most anything that comes out of a quarter machine, which I love.

Small and cheap!

I plan to put a couple containers in my purse, diaper bag, car, church bag, etc.

That way when I'm at the grocery store or the Pediatricians waiting room

and my little man gets restless I have something to keep him entertained.

Okay, you can say it now.

I'm a genius.

The Elves of Gardner Village

As if you don't have enough to do this holiday season, you can add one more thing to your list: The Elves at Gardner Village! This is a chance to get out with the kids and revel in some Christmas Magic. One of our shops is located inside this rustic little shopping center, so we are lucky enough to be surrounded by these cute imps every day! The Elves are similar to the witches that the Village hosts, and it is a blast to visit all the shops while trying to find the Elves.

Out and about from December 1 to December 31, the village provides a scavenger hunt to make the search even more fun. Just find all twelve elves that are scattered throughout the village, take your completed form to Sweet Afton's Candy Shop and get a free sugar stick as a reward for all the kids hard work!

Go during the day to avoid the worst of the cold, or go in the evening to see the lights as well and stop by Naborhood Bakery for a cup of hot chocolate. Take the kids and the camera and spend some time making this Christmas season more magical.

NOT Home for Holidays?

Lots and lots of families will be traveling this time of year. Particularly those with family in different areas of the country. And whether you are flying or driving, I know that if you're like me the last thing that you want to ruin your trip over the river and through the woods is travel stress. Luckily, there are lots of great ideas floating around the web to help. Here are some of our favorite trip tips!

If your kids are old enough to write or even color, there are lots of fun printable travel pages out there. Mom's Minivan has lots of great pages, from coloring sheets to word trip bingo. Print out a few for each child, according to age, throw them in a binder or folder and you have a ready made activity book.

When Adventures of a DIY Mom took a road trip to Disneyland, she put together activity bags for each of her children including snacks, coloring books, crayons and some travel games. She created this checker board from felt! Cheap, easy and the checkers don't slid off the board when you go around a corner.

These are a couple of marble mazes from Serving Pink Lemonade. Even if you are a novice sewer, these pouches are simply straight lines with a marble inside. The kids will have a blast rolling the marble through the aisles to get to the end.

Whether you are flying or driving with kids, there are lots of ideas out there for you. Take these or make your own, and enjoy your holiday travels!

If you are new mom, or a mom again, you know what I'm talking about. It's a lot of pressure. Despite the fact that they won't actually remember any of it, we moms feel a need to make babies first Christmas the best one ever. I can't tell you how much time I have spent looking for the ultimate Christmas present for that first year, at least for the picture's sake!

I have decided, however, that there is actually an ideal age for it, not that you have much control. I have four children, and my first was ten months old for her first Christmas. And of all my babies, hers was my favorite. She actually cared about the baby toys that we had for her! And, like all babies, she loved the wrapping paper as much as the toys. But it was such a joy to watch her sweet little face light up as she ripped the wrapping paper to shreds or danced to the music Christmas is so full of. Somehow, babies make everything more wonderful.

Simplify Your Christmas

I know some Moms who love Christmastime and some Moms who hate it. And there seems to be a pattern: the ones who hate it are the ones who try to do it ALL. You know, make every room a Christmas wonderland, bake cookies for everyone on the block, and plan at least 3 Christmas parties. Those are the Moms who hate it.

The Moms who love Christmas are the ones who have it figured out: You don't have to do it all. You really don't. Here are a couple of ways to simplify your Christmas this year while keeping it special.

Instead of neighborhood gifts, hold a cookie exchange. Invite everyone you would take a neighbor gift to come to your home and bring a batch of their favorite cookies. Have paper plates or other food storage available for guests to take so few of each cookie home with them. To avoid conflicts with family parties and other events, hold the exchange in the late morning and serve hot cider or chocolate to go along with the cookies. Your neighbors will love you because they won't have to give neighbor gifts either!
Don't stress about wrapping paper, use newspaper! There are lots of ideas all across the web to dress up newspaper and make it look just as gorgeous as expensive wrapping paper. Or let your kids decorate the newspaper before using it to wrap. It's helpful for your budget as well as the earth!
Get your shopping out of the way ASAP! This one is huge for me. If I can be done with my Christmas shopping by December 1, the rest of the month can be spent making Christmas Cookies with my kids, watching Rudolph, and taking trips to find the best Christmas light displays!
Enjoy it! Take a few moments and look at Christmas through your child's eyes. Revel in the music, take some time to think about how you want your children to remember these Christmases and make them the best that they can be!

My strategy for Black Friday?

Sleep in!

It's true. Despite my spendthrift tendencies the idea of standing in line at 4:00 AM just chills my bones and makes me pull the covers further over my head.

Instead, I am a full blown believer in Cyber Monday! You have heard of this one, right? The Monday after Thanksgiving is like Black Friday across the interwebs. Great deals abound. And my very favorite part, participate while sitting on the couch in your pajamas. I have seen a few lists of Black Friday Tips, so I thought I would offer you my Cyber Monday Tips.

Make sure you have your favorite kind of hot chocolate in hand. It makes the experience so much nicer.
Have Christmas music playing in the background. But not the Christmas Muzak that will be haunting the stores for the next month. The good stuff. Bare Naked Ladies and Sarah Mclachan and maybe even some Glee.
Check your favorite spots. Most will have a splash page leading to the best of their deals. Follow it, but make sure to check on the stuff that you really need. Not all prices will be advertised.
Check deal sites. Many times, you will find great deals on sites that you would have never thought of checking.
Sometime in the next day or so, sign up for email alerts from your favorite sites. Many times a coupon code will go out for this weekend, that sometimes, you will be able to use on top of a sale.
Don't forget about Etsy! Lot's of shops will be running sales there as well.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the majority of people who are reading this fall into that category. You are the ones who lose sleep for crying babies, sick littlies, last minute science projects and bad dreams. You are the ones who change the nastiest of diapers without so much as gagging, (well, maybe a little gagging) and clean up the spit up without blinking an eye. You are the volunteers in the classroom, the chauffeur and the chef.

I know what it is like. I have some lovely stories full of all kinds of bodily fluids, but I will refrain from sharing. I just thought I would remind you of some of the benefits from being the Mom:

The super slobbery kisses
The giggles
The little hand in yours as you cross the street
The baby lisp that results in words like "marshmarshlows" and "greckfass"
The feeling of that little baby nestled against you as she sleeps
The pride of hearing the word "mom" come from that sweet little mouth
Watching them figure this world out, one piece at a time
Seeing the light go on
Realizing that having a baby really does change everything

You are Mom. It's not an easy job, but it might be the best one.

I know, I know, Thanksgiving doesn't need the amount of prep time as Christmas. In fact, it gets almost entirely overshadowed by Christmas. But if you are one of those moms who loves Thanksgiving and wants to make gratitude a priority this week, here are a few ideas to make that a little bit more fun!

This cute thankful can and cards make the kids want to think about what they are grateful for. Homespun with Love created this one, and when it is full of cards from every member of the family, they pass it around and take turns reading the cards. It's a great reminder to the children what everyone else is grateful for.

Another fun idea comes from Mostly Food and Crafts. If you are hosting the big dinner, why not find a plain white tablecloth and some fabric pens. Then, before dinner is served, pass out the pens and have everyone sitting at the table write down what they are thankful for. When next Thanksgiving rolls around, add more. After a while, it will become full of all your blessings!

One of the biggest {fashion} dilemma's of being a mom is the diaper bag. There are so many out there. There are the functional ones: lot's of pockets, huge and pretty utilitarian. Not too cute, but very effective. Then there are the cute ones: some are useful with lots of compartments and some are just too small. But, if you are like me, it is just so much more fun to carry around a cute bag than an ugly useful one. One thing I have discovered that works pretty well for me, is rather than buy a diaper bag, buy a roomy purse! That way, you have plenty of room for all the necessary, but your bag doesn't scream to the world that you just had a baby. Let your cute little newborn do that!

To all you new moms out there, as well as all you more experienced moms out there, we would like to help you out! Thanksgiving!

We have our very first guest post here on Sassy Babies! Welcome to Whitney and Nicole from Something Brought You Here. We are so excited for you to be here to share some of you Thanksgiving experiences with us!

Have you been shopping lately? Today we went to Target to do a little Thanksgiving shopping to try and spruce up our homes for the upcoming holiday. Target normally has a really great holiday section. We walked up and down the aisles and saw not ONE thing for Thanksgiving. We passed many rows filled with Christmas ornaments, Christmas trees, even Christmas music. Then we found one aisle filled with Halloween clearance items but still... nothing for Thanksgiving. Then we asked a Target associate if they could point us in the direction as to where the Thanksgiving items were. Her reply was, "We don't have anything for Thanksgiving." WHAT? I was also at the mall this week and Santa's workshop was being set up and I passed a sign that stated "Santa arrives November 12th". Seriously? What happened to waiting until after Thanksgiving? Does anyone else feel like Thanksgiving is the forgotten Holiday? Everything in the stores goes from Halloween right to Christmas and it seems to be happening quicker and quicker. Even though the retail world seems to be skipping over Thanksgiving we are definitely not. November is a time for amazing food, traditions, family get-togethers, and gratitude.

One of my favorite memories about thanksgiving was when we would pull out the thankful turkey my brother made in elementary school years ago. We each made it a goal to at least write one thing we were thankful for each day and put it inside the turkey. All of the thankful notes were anonymous. We never knew who wrote what down, especially pertaining to the ones about each other. It encouraged us to always be nice respectful and helpful to each other. I really can't think of a better time of year to show our families how much we appreciate them, even though I know we should always be doing that all year round. I truly am always thankful for the wonderful things my family does it's just that I normally keep the thankfulness to myself because I have such a hard to expressing my thanks and I feel awkward to do so. In which case this month becomes the perfect time and excuse to be thankful for all the wonderful things I have, especially my loving family. I love this time of year and the wonderful opportunities it brings each of us to thankful. As you can imagine though with my brother making our thankful turkey it definitely wasn't the best thing to look at. Which may have been a factor in the disappearance of the turkey the last several years.... hmm? Anyways, as Whitney and I talked I decided that it would be appropriate to bring back the thankful turkey in a new way.

Every November while growing up my dad would cook a different type of squash each week for Sunday dinner. This is when I truly grew to love squash, especially butternut squash. He is a professional chef so you can imagine that we have elaborate Thanksgiving dinners, they are literally to die for. One of my favorite things on the menu for Thanksgiving? His Butternut Squash Soup. It is not Thanksgiving without it! I don't do leftovers but this is one thing that I will re-heat and re-eat every day if I could. Nothing says November like Butternut Squash Soup. Try this yummy recipe today and you will want to add it to your Thanksgiving menu. It will soon become tradition, I promise!

Something else that is tradition for Thanksgiving? Sweet potatoes. We usually have them in a sweet buttery sauce with roasted marshmallows on top. Is there anything better? Well... maybe. We thought that maybe instead of doing sweet potatoes the same way why not do something different with them... something that you might not have thought of before. Something like this Sweet Potato Cupcake with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting that we made. Delicious!!!

It's November. Please don't skip over Thanksgiving this year, or any year. Be grateful this month and remember:

The New Mom

It's time for the holidays: lots of shopping trips, family parties, gift wrapping and lots of cooking. All, well, mostly fun for most moms--except one. It is particularly hard to be the new mom this time of year. A brand new baby, demanding your attention and most of your time. What do you do at a family party, in the middle of some great conversation, when your baby needs to nurse? How do you wrangle all of the diapers, wipes, binkies, blankets that are required for a simple trip out of the house?

At Sassy Babies, we are so excited about Halloween! This weekend is going to be full of Halloween fun and CANDY! And, if you're lucky, you might just be part of a Halloween party. If you, you might have it planned down to the last second. If not, we thought we would share some ideas to take your Halloween party from average to amazing.
