Women have strived to get the perfectly salon blow-dried hair at home for years. My own hair is thick and naturally straight so I’ve been on a search for an amazing hairdryer that is quite but dries my hair quickly and gives me some volume. I’ve always been secretly hoping that the likes of ghd would launch a hair dryer to go with their hair straighteners (or stylers as they call them) and last year the hair gods at ghd answered my prayers and launched one called the ghd Air in the UK, with the Australian release on March 1st, 2012.

I was lucky enough to be sent my very own ghd Air to trial before the launch and it was love at first sight. As much as people say they’re not about aesthetics, it is the first thing that captures the eye and leaves a lasting impression. It’s sexy and sleek design is an eye catch one that had us ooh-ing and aah-ing the minute we opened the impressive box it arrives in.

But enough about the looks, what about the inside?

The ghd Air comes with all the usual features we have come to expect in a hair dryer, including:

Advanced Ionic Technology: for reduced frizz and a silkier, softer finish

Cool shot button: for a quick blast of cool air to fix the look in place

Salon strength AC motor: for faster and more powerful drying

2 concentrator nozzles: helping to create a wide variety of styles

Ergonomic design: for easy handling and maximum control

We put the ghd Air hair dryer to the test

As you can see from our photos, our hair was about 40% dry when we turned the ghd Air on it (after using some heat protecting spray). Turning our head upside down, we aimed the ghd Air at the roots to get some natural lift. We didn’t try to dry it with a brush like our hair dresser usually does; I have too much hair and not enough arm strength to stand there for 30 minutes to do that.

Using a combination of the highest heat & speed setting and the cool shot button, my hair dried in less than 5 minutes, thanks in part to the fact that the front had already dried out naturally. The hair dryer was a slightly heavier than the one I currently own, but it was quieter and dried my hair faster. It took me a little while to get use to the buttons on the reverse side of the hair dryer – which I read up on and it’s to make it ambidextrous. How clever!

I was really happy with the results. I had natural look and not major fuzz issues – nothing that some smoothing serum wouldn’t fix. This was my idea of a perfect blow dry with minimum effort.

But of course being female I’m never happy with what I have. So out came the straighteners (our ghd Gold styler, of course) and we flicked the ends of our hair to give our hair a bit of body and bounce for that carefree look. We avoided the top half of our hair with the straighteners to keep the volume and a bit of hair spray later we were ready to go. All done in less than 20 minutes and I was ready to leave the house.

For tips on how to get that Victoria’s Secret curl in your hair, check out Elise’s video tutorial over at Stuff That I Bought.

Finally we should mention the price. The ghd Air retails at AUD$199 which is a little on the pricey side, but an amazing hair dryer is hard to find. Especially if you’re after one that does the job quickly and quietly. This is a good buy and rounds out my hair appliance collection nicely.

With a plethora of events on around the world at any one time, it can be hard to decide how to spend your precious weekend leisure hours. Maybe an art show in Perth, a fashion show in Copenhagen, or a wedding expo in London to perhaps be inspired a la Sarah Burton? Or is browsing markets more your weekend cup of tea? Whatever your weekend preferences, you can be sure that there is an event on to suit your tastes.

The Perth International Arts Festival kicks off this weekend, and with our sisters out West playing host to theatre, dance, visual arts, music, literature and film events, you can be certain the stylish set will be out in full force. With this being the 60th anniversary of the festival, the huge array of events to choose from will not disappoint. Be sure to check out the Ballet at the Quarry, which showcases four different works from around the world, including the New York inspired ‘The Sixth Borough’ and ‘Serenade’, which is a staple for the New York Ballet. Be sure to bring a picnic and enjoy the evening’s performances. If ballet isn’t your thing, head to see Bon Iver perform, or take in a performance of Mozart’s classic ‘A Magic Flute’.

Brides-to-be will flock to London this weekend in search of inspiration for their dream wedding, with the London Wedding Show taking place this weekend. With over 150 stands, the exhibition includes fashion shows featuring the latest bridal gown designs, as well as ideas for occasion wear. Take time out from exploring the expo with a visit to the Champagne Bar, and then continue on to work your way through both designer and high street pieces. Who knows, you may even spot something to rival Sarah Burton’s stunning Alexander McQueen creation for that wedding last year.

Scandenavian fashion takes centre stage this week, with Copenhagen Fashion Week running until February 5. Visit shows of designers such as Camilla Staerk, Elise Gug and high street favourite H&M for inspiration for the upcoming season. While in the picturesque Danish capital, be sure to check out the Copenhagen Unfair exhibition, which showcases the cutting edge designs of new designers and artists from Denmark for a unique look at fashion as it develops.

Take it easy in Tokyo this weekend and visit the Togo Shrine Markets, which are held in the trendy Harajuku district. Browse the traditional dolls and art, and if you’re lucky you may even find a luxurious silk kimono to call your own. Enjoy the view of the quaint Togo Shrine and relax as you peruse the treasures on offer this weekend.

Next to diamonds, shoes just may be a girls’ best friend and in our humble opinion, there can never be too many places for a girl to indulge in a little shoe shopping. The talent pool, so to speak, expanded last night with the launch of the latest Steve Madden store, this time in Melbourne’s Bourke Street. Melbourne’s style set descended on the store, which is set out to resemble one of Madden’s famous New York stores. Consisting of three levels, there is no shortage of fancy footwear for both men and women. Fashion conscious men can find leather loafers, casual dress lace-ups and boots in the lower level, where they sit alongside women’s sale items. New arrivals can be found on the ground floor, where sequins, glitter, diamantes and colour dominate Madden’s signature rock-inspired platform shoes, all of which ooze sex appeal and confidence. Never one to shy away from bold fashion statements, Madden exerts a twist on this seasons loafers with his suave sequinned designs. Leopard print is also huge in the footwear genius’ latest collection, with platforms, boots and flats all showcasing the trend.

Despite all the treasures to be discovered on the ground floor, the highlight of the store lies on the top floor, where Madden’s chunky, bold shoes are joined by the fancy footwear of Betsey Johnson, America’a answer to Vivienne Westwood. Like Madden, Johnson’s bold creations are dominated by colour, diamante embellishments and hip patterns, but these designs are not for the fainthearted. Johnson adheres to no-ones rules, and her outrageous shoes seem right at home in Madden’s latest store. Available only at Steve Madden stores in Bondi, Chadstone and now Bourke Street, we think the Betsey Johnson range is perfect fusion with Madden’s urban edge designs.

Kicking off the party mode was Ruby Rose, who performed as the guest DJ for the evening, wearing black Mary Jane-esque suede Betsey Johnson platforms, no less! (Available for your shopping pleasure in store at Bondi, Chadstone and Bourke Street.) Revealing her trademark tattoos and dressed in a chic black and white jean-sleeveless shirt combination, Ruby was the epitome of Steve Madden cool as she showed off her talents on the DJ decks.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Steve Madden shoes, it is easy to see how the man behind the label has earned himself the reputation as a trend setter. With the ability to seemingly see into the future of fashion and refusal to conform to obvious trends, Madden injects a certain, eccentric je ne se quoius into the wardrobes of shopaholics the world over. And for good reason.

SASSYBELLA.com

With Paris and Milan Men’s Fashion Week come and gone, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and review this season’s trends on the menswear runways. Overall, the economic gloom took European designers back to safe haven – traditional looks with classic tailoring and business suits, overcoats and leather patent shoes flooded the runway. But aside from the return to classics, we saw creative touches with the layering, colour and accessories.

Trend One: Statement Outwear

If there was one key trend that took fashion week by storm, it would be statement outwear. Whether it was the bright colours or exotic fabrics, designers made sure that their jackets, trench coats and parkas alike stood out.

Burberry Prorsum (pictured above) had their traditional trenches dipped in complimentary colours, whilst designers like Prada had choose eye-catching prints to inject some fun into traditional pieces. Raf Simons who is never shy from pushing the envelope, had his models wear shirts-as-outwear garments to surprising effect. Whilst we don’t expect these designs to be available off the runway, it’s an innovative idea that deserves mention.

Trend Two: Keep a Warm Head

Lots of designers had their models wear headgear this season. Of course, they’re practical in the colder weather – especially in the cold European winter – and this season, we saw berets, caps, beanies and top hats on many models.

But the difference with this season’s headgear was how monotone they were. Olive green, navy blue, plain black were all colours of choices for many designers. Dior Homme paired plains suits with matching caps whilst the Giorgio Armani collection featured structured berets with fastener details on the side. Raf Simons, on the other hand, choose oversized beanies that covered the faces of his models.

Trend Two: Playing with Textures

Winter is usually the season where designers explore and mix interesting textures and fabrics together. The collections at fashion week did not disappoint. Designers showed off suits in luxurious velvet (Gucci), there were mohair sweaters (DSquared2) and we also saw shearing overcoats (John Varvatos).

Some designers combined materials in their garments, like Calvin Klein who added a dose of luxury to sportswear by having alligator sleeves on wool bomber jackets. Bottega Veneta was more conservative and instead chose to reinterpret the suit jacket with cut-out graphic shapes made from neoprene.

SASSYBELLA.com

If you follow us on Twitter, you probably noticed that I was in Detroit last month for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) and many people emailed and tweeted to me wanting to know why I was the car capital of America (car buffs may argue that Detroit is the car capital of the world). But besides being given a “free” trip from Ford Motors, it was because Ford wanted to showcase how they design their cars – not just to the car crowd who already have a passion for a beautifully designed vehicle.

Flying out over 140 bloggers to Detroit, Michigan – or online influencers as Ford put it – from 16 countries as far reaching as Turkey, China, South Africa and Australia from various blogging disciplines like art & design, travel and fashion, Ford were set to send waves through the car marketing industry. Influence use to be a hard thing to measure with print publications, especially with the readership ‘statistic’ which uses parameters like cover image recognition to count how many people read a single magazine here in Australia. But with digital it’s different, everything is measureable.

When everyone found out that I blogged about fashion and beauty, the one question kept coming up: How I was going to cover the motor show? I have written about cars in the past, but mostly because they’ve teamed up with an amazing fashion designer or supermodel – not about how much horsepower it has. Fellow bloggers were great with suggestions – I especially liked the one where I showcased the outfits worn by the female models used by the car brands. Then I realised that unlike some of the tacky local motor shows, there wasn’t a busty girl in skimpy clothes in sight. Not that there weren’t girls in sexy dresses, but there was a level of class to it all, after all the NAIAS is for the seriously serious industry folk. I toyed with the idea of doing a day by day recap of what I did, but that would only serve to appease my own needs.

Then a thought came to me while I was starting my 25 hour journey home to Sydney; maybe fashion could learn a thing or two about the design process from the motor industry, or from Ford at least.

5 things the fashion industry could learn from Ford Motors

1. Technology is amazing

It’s not that fashion don’t utilize technology, but for Ford (and other car brands), it has become an integral part in the design process. We were shown how Ford use 3D and CG technology to design a car every step along the way – from sketching an idea to seeing how light shimmers across the surface of the vehicle, there is not one feature of a car that is not accounted for.

While I love paper sketches, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that most fashion designers don’t even draw anymore. We see the designs on Project Runway using design tablets (thanks in main part to the show’s sponsor HP) but the 3D modelling and effects used by Ford was astounding. While we would all love to see a haute couture creation, it’s just not physically possible for us all. Last year saw Valentino Garavani and his longtime business partner Giancarlo Giammetti launch a 3D digital museum at http://valentino-garavani-archives.org spanning 50 years of Valentino’s namesake brand (he retired in 2008). The online museum features nearly 100 fashion shows on video, 5,000 dresses, the original working sketches from the designer’s hand and photographs of the clothes, the celebrities who wore them and a vision of the world of Valentino.

“It is the first time there has been a virtual fashion museum — and people can interact,” says Mr. Giammetti. “To be called pioneers for what we have done — and at our age!”

2. Quality over quantity

I was pretty amazed when Ford showed us all the steps it takes to get a car from the design phase to the showroom floor. The work and the thought that goes into a single vehicle is astounding.

Some could argue that car brands launch too many cars per year, but it’s not like they’re Karl Lagerfeld churning out up to 20+ collections a year for the likes of Chanel, Fendi and his own lines. There is beauty in something that takes time to create and thought is given.

Ford has teams of people who test everything, from how seats should be placed in cars (with a lot of research into how people step in and out of their cars) to how a car drives in traffic via simulators. It would be nice if some fashion designers would focus on having a quality pieces made, not just shipping everything off to a cheap maker in Bali who gives you back wonky seams or uneven shoulders. When you’re charging a few hundred for a single tshirt.

3. Where is the eco-fashion focus?

I met several eco friendly bloggers during the three days I was in Detroit for Ford’s Fantasy Camp / NAIAS. It was kind of rare because I think I know of one writer in Australia who is fairly prominent in Australia with her writings about eco fashion and living – the lovely Tullia Jack.

Ford have teams who are working on finding sustainable and recyclable materials to build their cars with, like soy for soy-foam seats to corn based plastics and fabrics. Whether some of those materials are actually sustainable was up for debate amongst some, it was good to see a brand as big as Ford striving to deliver options for the eco-friendly conscious.

In fashion eco-fashion tends to get sucked up into the vortex that is fast fashion and we lose sight of the brands who are creating beautiful designs or making a difference with their work. Even we’re guilty of forgetting about eco-fashion, something which we are looking to change.

4. Fashion trade shows could learn a thing or two from NAIAS

I’ve been to several fashion trade shows here in Australia and they usually consist of booth with racks of clothes, looking rather uninspired. Sometimes there is a designer or two that stands out, but where is that showmanship? Each car brand at NAIAS had allotted times when they could do a spectacular unveil of their latest models and the crowds who turned out to see the new Ford 2013 Fusion was astounding. Hundreds of people from the media and car industry insiders pilled in to see the unveiling of the Ford Fusion car with even more walking around the huge convention space.

Premiere at Fashion Exposed in Australia comes close to hitting the mark with a luxurious showroom for the luxury designers, but I didn’t feel the excitement in the room when I went last year. Maybe fashion trade shows are different overseas – I’m dying to hit the Pitti Immagine Uomo trade show in Florence or MAGIC in Las Vegas one day – but in Australia they could do with a revamp.

5. Bring people together – much like Luisaviaroma’s FirenzeForever

This point is a little self-indulgent… because I love meeting bloggers. Conversations never just stay in your own industries and you make friends with so many different people who share some of the geekier/girlie qualities people don’t always appreciate. I’m not saying fly bloggers to a location together like Ford did with their Fantasy Camp, or LuisaViaRoma do twice-yearly with their Firenze Forever styling lab, which I had the pleasure of attending last year. But if you can show a blogger a good time at a fun event, then the chances of getting coverage is exponentially higher.

After meeting so many bloggers on the Ford Fantasy Camp and listening them speak at Ford’s Ignite evening I grew more inspired to work on SASSYBELLA.com more, and even have plans to tweak the design a little. Even though everyone is at different stages of their blogging careers – some work on their blogs full time, some blog part time, while others write for bigger digital properties – it was fascinating to hear about the in’s and out’s of blogging in their respective countries and get an insight into their worlds.

Back to the Social Media aspect of the Ford Fantasy Camp…

The question on every digital marketers lips is probably “was it worth it?” Clearly that is a question not for me to answer, but Ford’s head of Social Media, Scott Monty gave us a quick list of stats from Ford’s perspective after the first day of NAIAS. Thanks to the social media power of all the attendees, Ford had:

2,200 twitter mentions

Reached 5 million people

40% coverage was about Ford today from the NAIAS

Share of voice for their new car, the Ford Fusion (aka the Mondeo in Australia) is normally 9.5%. Today it was 58.5%.

70% of all the coverage from NAIAS during press conference was about Ford and the Ford Fusion

Before I end this, let me just give a big shout out to some of the cool people I met that made my time in Detroit a fun and memorable experience: Nikki, Dylan, Alix, Kai and Stuart.

Hope I see you all again soon – preferably in Australia!

Fashionistas the world over all know that Haute Couture is all about creating a dream, with designs shown during couture week being capable of transporting both showgoers and those watching from afar to another world, where sequins and tulle are uniform and Lagerfeld is king. This time, it was the Valentino show that swept us up in to the fairytale world of couture and made us feel like princesses do live happily ever after.

One of the most exciting things about couture is that designers are free to explore and create their most intimate fantasies, bringing their imaginations to life on the runway, and the House of Valentino did just that on the final day of Haute Couture week. Designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri revealed dresses of delicate lace and intricate embellishments dominated, with signature Valentino soft colour palette and girlish bows complemented perfectly by beads, sequins and stones. The fairytale princess of the couture world, Valentino’s latest looks included floor length gowns with floral undertones and long, lace sleeves, layered bodices and handwoven floral detailing. Embroided dress coats with oversized bows were also shown, paired with flowing gowns that looked to be made for a grand ballroom.

Feminine and romantic, the Valentino show was perhaps the perfect way to end Couture week: glamourous, yet not overbearing. Just what we love about Valentino.
