The Showtime comedy, which returns Sunday at 9/8c, ended its madcap third season with a gut punch: Hank (David Duchovny) was arrested on assault charges moments after telling his ex, Karen (Natasha McElhone), of his tryst with Mia (Madeline Zima), who, unbeknownst to Hank at the time, was underage. And while that reveal presents plenty of drama for Season 4, it also unearthed a crucial secret that’s carried the show since the pilot.

“We’ve been using that event as a motor for behavior and plot since the beginning,” Duchovny tells . “And I guess that now that is no longer a secret, it is no longer a motor. In a way we’re free of it, which will be interesting for the next year, and we’ll have to come up with new stuff.”

But before that happens, the show definitely seems to be reflecting on its past. Creator and executive producer Tom Kapinos says that was completely by design. “The ending of last year allowed me to put Hank back to the way he was at the beginning of the show, kind of a down-and-out Hank who has to deal with pretty much everyone hating him,” he says. “There’s sort of nowhere to go but up.”

As the season begins, Karen won’t talk to Hank. Ditto Becca (Madeleine Martin), the couple’s teenage daughter. “That’s probably the most painful thing for Hank,” Duchovny says. “Becca is growing up to the point where she’s going to judge him as a person and not just as a father and decide that for her own well-being she’s got to create some distance. This year more than ever, she’s started to make harsher judgments on her father’s behavior, and I think Hank does begin to take that into account more than anything else really. It is painful for him.”

So Hank turns to best friend/agent Charlie (Evan Handler) for help finding a job and hotshot attorney Abby Rhodes (guest star Carla Gugino) for help in the courtroom. Charlie lands a deal for Hank to rewrite the script for the adaptation of his novel about his indiscretion with Mia, starring lunatic Hollywood fixture Eddie Nero (guest star Rob Lowe) as Hank. Abby and Hank, meanwhile, end up discussing legal strategy beneath the sheets.

Kapinos says Hank and Abby’s relationship has more weight than his flings in the past. “The design was to basically come up with a character who could rival Karen,” he says. “She is someone who might give us another way to go.”

Also getting an alternative romantic partner is Karen, who begins to fall for the father (guest star Michael Ealy) of one of Becca’s bandmates (Zoe Kravitz). “The goal for the season was to get Hank and Karen to a place where they could kind of let each other go in a way that was bittersweet but not depressing,” Kapinos says. “I wanted to see her finally have chemistry with someone else and … see what that brought out in Hank. I wanted him to see that there were alternatives out there, and that maybe this was just a fool’s quest to keep chasing down the same relationship for years and years.”

However, Duchovny believes that the back-and-forth between Karen and Hank will always remain the heart of the show. “Hank and Karen have a love for the ages,” he says. “Whatever it is you believe with respect to love and how much someone should ‘take’ before they walk out the door… that is really what the show is about. Unlike the festering rape charge or the relationship with Mia or whatever love interests come and go for either Hank or Karen, their relationship does not get resolved until we resolve the show.”

Which brings us back to the dilemma: With so much of the show’s history revealed and dealt with, is now the time to call it quits?

“Each season has been kind of a chapter, and this closes the door on the Mia stuff, and there’s no going back to it,” Kapinos says. “So it’s about how you begin again. I don’t think it’s the end, but I do think it’s time to shake it up a little. People toss around the word reboot, and I don’t know if I believe in that for this show. But we dealt with all the stuff we set up in the first episode, and so it’s time for it to evolve and move in a slightly different direction.”

David Duchovny heads up the cast in this comedy about Hank Moody, a novelist with sex and drug addictions, who is struggling to raise his daughter (Madeleine Martin) while having problems with his ex-wife (Natascha McElhone). Other cast members include Evan Handler and Madeline Zima.

Also, Hank’s lawyer Abby (Carla Gugino) stated early on in Episode 4.5, “Freeze Frame,” that the prosecution didn’t have much of a case in the statutory rape charge against Hank. The picture will easily give them the upper hand in throwing Hank back in prison for an extended stay. Sexual teaser relations between Abby and Hank may also be delayed.
As for Charlie and Marcy (Pamela Adlon), divorce may no longer be in the couple’s future. It seems Charlie got a bootleg vasectomy from a shyster urologist. • Monitor your views. Regularly see how many times your profile was viewed or came up in searches. If you are not receiving a lot of “hits,” it may be time to make adjustments to your profile.

• Join groups. LinkedIn has myriad groups and allows users to join up to 50. Strategically choose groups in which people searching for you will look. Try joining the largest groups in their category and some smaller, more specialized groups. Many groups have job postings within the group, so be sure to check that regularly.

BHIWANI – Villagers in this Haryana district Sunday blocked traffic on the Bhiwani-Hansi town highway after a police official’s kin fired indiscriminately Saturday night killing a teenager and seriously injuring another.

Bhiwani police officials confirmed that a case was registered against Mukhtiar Singh, brother of Haryana deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Randhir Singh, and three others for the firing at Jatu Lohari village, 15 km from here.

Sandeep, 15, was killed in the firing and Jeetu has been admitted to a hospital in Rohtak town with serious injuries, the police officials said.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the firing incident took place when a wedding procession was moving near the village and a vehicle tried to overtake it. As members of the procession did not give way to the vehicle immediately, Mukhtiar Singh came out and started firing on the procession indiscriminately.

While one person died on the spot, another was injured. Singh fired 15 rounds, police said.

Angry villagers Sunday blocked the highway connecting Bhiwani and Hansi towns in southwest Haryana, inconveniencing hundreds of commuters.

They criticised the Haryana police and the district administration for not taking action against the guilty. District officials finally persuaded the villagers to lift the blockade after several hours.

A senior district police official said that teams have been sent to nab the guilty.

CHANDIGARH: Terming the cut in prices of Petroleum Products as “cruel joke” with consumers, Shiromani Akali Dal General Secretary Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra said this reduction is “insufficient and mere a eyewash” in comparison of heavy slump in crude oil prices in the international market. In a press statement released, here on Saturday, Prof. Chandumajra alleged that the Congress led Union Government was playing in the hands of giant and multi national companies instead of watching the common man interests. He alleged that UPA Government in the center has betrayed the people of the country by not to adequate cut in petroleum products costs as it promised in the Parliament to link these costs with crude oil prices in the international market. He said that Petroleum Products prices in the country are still hovering when in international market the crude oil prices are slumped to $39 per barrel from $148. Prof, Chandumajra charged that costs of Petroleum Products in the country are not being reduced according to crude oil price index so that giant Petroleum Companies can make huge profits and in return give the big amounts to the Congress Party as election fund legally and under the table. He said this is the only reason that despite of heavy and persistence falls in crude oil prices in international market the oil prices are, even now, flying high in the domestic market. The Akali leader also demanded a high level probe in the dubious figures, projected by domestic Petroleum Companies and on pretext of which the Union Government make a slight reduction the costs, by a joint committee comprising Members of Parliament and economic experts. He said that the figurer of 100 crores as a deficit mentioned by the oil companies is in contradiction with their annual reports depicting the hefty profits.”In reply to a question; the Union Government had itself presented the data showing profit to the Oil Companies in the Parliament”, he claimed.Chandumajra suggested that the experts should also analyze the reasons due to which the refining costs per liter in India are much higher than those in the other countries; that too while we invite foreign investment stressing that the lobour in India is much cheaper as compared to the other countries. It is obvious that the Oil Companies are manipulating the figures whenever and wherever it suits them. The Akali leader mentioned that during the financial year 2006-07 the Union Government earned Rs. 93 lac crores on account of sales tax on Petroleum Products; and during the financial year 2007-08 this collection is increased to Rs. one lac crore. It is pertinent to mention here that the total collection in the country from sale tax is 4 lacs crore during the preceding year. Prof. Chandumajra sharply criticized the Central Government for its total failure to control inflation and to protect the interests of the common man, which is its moral and constitutional duty. He said that the United Progressive Alliance has no moral right to remain in power.

Beginning 3 September 2008, PayPal will introduce a new method to add funds to your PayPal Account in select countries.

Adding Funds to your account (Topping up)

1. Topping up. PayPal customers in the following countries may add funds to their PayPal Account via bank transfer from their local bank accounts: Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Greece, Portugal, Poland, Finland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Singapore, Hong Kong and Mexico. Funds may be used for the purchase of goods or services over the internet. Due to bank processing times, it may be a few days from your initiation of the transfer that the funds will appear in your PayPal Account.
2. Fees. PayPal will not charge you a fee for topping up from a bank account, however, your financial institution may charge you a fee to send the funds to PayPal. Please check with your bank prior to sending funds.
3. Limitations. Only customers in the countries listed above may add funds to their PayPal Account via bank transfer. The funds must come from your bank account into a PayPal Account with the same name as the registered account holder. In the event you attempt to send funds from an account wherein the name on the PayPal Account and the name on the bank account do not match, the funds transfer may be rejected by PayPal. You will be liable for any fees incurred for attempted transfers to accounts that do not have the same registered owner. For fraud, risk and regulatory reasons, PayPal reserves the right to limit the amount that may be topped up at any time.
4. Redemption. Top up funds may be redeemed for good or services from other PayPal customers and may be refunded to your registered bank account, where available and in accordance with PayPal’s withdrawal policies as shown below.

Effective 9 July 2008, PayPal Private Limited will be amending the above mentioned policies to reflect several changes to its product. 6.5 Use of PayPal on eBay. Sellers who offer PayPal as a payment method in their eBay listings must follow these requirements:

2. Accept all PayPal funding sources from a buyer, including but not limited to eCheck and credit cards.
3. Have a Premier or Business account or be willing to upgrade to a Premier or Business account upon receipt of a payment.
4. Accept international PayPal transactions if the eBay listing offers shipping outside of their country.

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (Reuters) – U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama cited his youthful experimentation with drugs and alcohol as his greatest moral failing on Saturday at a forum on faith and values that also featured Republican John McCain.

The Illinois senator touched on emotional and controversial topics in the religious community, ranging from his support of abortion rights to his backing of civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.

The televised discussion, moderated by one of the country’s leading evangelicals, Rick Warren, was an opportunity for both candidates to reach out to religious voters who will be a key voting bloc in the November election.

“I had a difficult youth,” Obama said when Warren asked about his greatest moral failing. “There were times when I experimented with drugs.”

Obama has written previously about his drug use but rarely discusses it in public. He said he traced that behavior to a “certain selfishness on my part” that was part of his growing up process.

More broadly, Obama said one of the country’s biggest moral failings involved its treatment of the poor.

Obama and McCain met briefly on stage between their respective appearances. Both have struggled for different reasons to garner support in the religious community.

Obama, a Christian, has had to repeatedly debunk rumors that he is Muslim and was forced to distance himself from a controversial former pastor.

McCain, who grew up Episcopalian but now attends an evangelical Southern Baptist church in Arizona, has had trouble winning over conservative evangelicals because of his past support for stem cell research and his blunt criticism of the movement’s leaders in 2000.

But the Arizona senator’s opposition to abortion has redeemed him in the eyes of many in that religious community.

Obama touched on the abortion issue in his portion of the questioning. He said he supported a woman’s right to have an abortion but wanted to work to reduce the number of such procedures.

Evangelicals account for one in four U.S. adults and have become a key conservative base for the Republican Party with a strong focus in the past on opposition to abortion and gay rights and the promotion of “traditional” family values.

Such issues delivered almost 80 percent of the white evangelical Protestant vote to President George W. Bush in 2004 but the movement is more fractured and restless this year though it remains largely in the Republican camp.

slamabad, Aug 16 (PTI) Ruling Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said President Pervez Musharraf should “demonstrate maturity” and resign, maintaining that he has only two options – to quit or face impeachment proceedings in parliament. He said the provincial assemblies, which are part of the President’s electoral college, had passed resolutions with an overwhelming majority asking Musharraf to seek a vote of confidence in parliament.

“We have been requesting him to go and he should also demonstrate maturity and leave,” Zardari told Dawn News channel in an interview. Asked if the President was willing to step down before the coalition launched impeachment proceedings, Zardari said: “There are two schools of thought.

One school says that in a battlefield .

You always leave the room for exit so that you lose the least and the opposition has a chance to retreat.

“And the other school is that let him confront and let parliament do what other parliaments have done to the dictators of the world.” He added: “From a position where people would defend him (Musharraf) and ask why should he go, everybody is asking today why isn’t he going.

That was done by design. We have managed to bring it to this position.

” Replying to a question about the army’s possible response to the impeachment move, Zardari said the army “has no political position and that’s enshrined in our constitution”. He said the PPP-led coalition did not want to put the army to the test and “at the end of the day, democracy would have won one way or the other”.

Bantamweight Akhil Kumar had advanced on Friday, extending a brilliant run by upsetting Russian world champion Sergey Vodopyanov.

Jitender, who survived a fright when Doniyorov opened a cut on his chin but was able to finish the bout, paid tribute to Akhil for giving him precious advice.

“Akhil had fought him (Doniyorov) before and knew a lot about him,” Jitender said. “We talked about the fight last night. I couldn’t sleep but Akhil told me I would win. All the credit goes to him.”

Jitender will be tested in the next round when he meets Russia’s Georgy Balakshin.

Akhil, who had outboxed 2005 world silver medallist Ali Hallab of France in the first round, seems India’s best bet.

The shaven-headed 27-year-old, whose win over Vodopyanov came on India’s Independence Day, will face Moldova’s Veaceslav Gojan for a place in the last four.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Police arrested 10 people on Saturday who they said were behind bomb attacks which killed at least 45 people in Ahmedabad last month.

Police said one of those arrested, Abu Bashir, was the mastermind of the bombings and that all the suspects were active members of the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

“As of information we have right now, he is the mastermind of the blasts (and) this network is the brains behind the blasts,” senior police officer P. C. Pande told a news conference in Ahmedabad.

At least 16 bombs exploded in Ahmedabad on July 26, a day after another set of blasts in Bangalore killed a woman. Three days later, several unexploded bombs were found in the town of Surat, in Gujarat.

A little-known group called the “Indian Mujahideen” had claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad attacks. But Pande said Indian Mujahideen was just “another identity” for SIMI.

SIMI, a Muslim group, has been blamed by police for almost every major bomb attack in India, including explosions on commuter trains in Mumbai two years ago which killed 187 people.

Bashir, 30, was arrested in Lucknow.

“We were on his lookout for the past several days ever since we were tipped off about his presence in Uttar Pradesh,” Brij Lal, a senior state police official, told Reuters in Lucknow.

Ahmedabad is the main city in the communally sensitive and relatively wealthy state of Gujarat, scene of deadly riots in 2002 in which 2,500 people are thought to have died, most of them Muslims killed by rampaging Hindu mobs.

If the extension of the rural employment guarantee scheme across the country was for the mazdoor and the Rs 71,000 crore loan waiver scheme to bail out the kisan in distress, the government today reached out to 50 lakh karamcharis by accepting recommendations of the Sixth Central Pay Commission.

In an Independence Day bonanza for government employees, as first reported by The Indian Express, the Cabinet announced a jump in allowances and salaries beyond what was recommended by the pay panel to ensure that each employee gets a minimum 21 per cent increase over the current salary. Most demands put forward by Defence forces have also been met in the revised pay structure.

The wage hike would ensure that minimum emolument of a government employee would be in excess of Rs 10,000 per month. The modifications made by the Cabinet in the pay panel recommendations would increase the financial implication for the Centre by Rs 17,798 crore annually and the arrears – to be given with effect from January 2006 – would cost Rs 29,373 crore. Modifications made by the Cabinet would mean an extra burden of Rs 11,000 crore for the government.

The new salaries would be given to the employees beginning September and arrears (from January 2006) would be given in two installments – 40 per cent this fiscal and 60 per cent in 2009-10. The arrears would be given in cash to employees just before the Diwali festival season.

The annual increment rate for all employees has been increased by the Cabinet from 2.5 per cent (recommended by the pay panel) to 3 per cent.

While the Home Ministry could not push through demands of the police and paramilitary forces in earlier discussions, an intervention by RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav ensured that each state creates at least one DGP-level post equivalent to the Chief Secretary. This move was supported by NCP leader Sharad Pawar and Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.

For the armed forces, the Cabinet has met the demand of moving Colonels and Brigadiers to a higher pay band (PB-4). This comes after the forces protested against the “unfair deal” given to mid-level officers. For senior Lt Gen-level officers posted at Defence Headquarters, the Cabinet has corrected an anomaly by making their salaries equivalent to Commanders in the field.

Soldiers too have been given an enhanced allowance that will bring the salary of each by at least Rs 1,000 over and above the pay panel suggestion. All soldiers will be given an enhanced Military Service Pay (MSP) of Rs 2,000, up from the recommended Rs 1,000.

The Cabinet has also approved at least three assured promotions for all Defence personnel and civilian employees. Civilians would get assured promotions after 10, 20 and 30 years of service while jawans will be promoted after 8, 16 and 24 years.

The armed forces have welcomed the modifications made by the Cabinet and have said that all concerns of the Defence forces appear to have been suitably addressed. “Even as more details are awaited, prima facie, all concerns of the Defence forces appear to have been suitably addressed. Increase in MSP of PBORs and compensation for middle-rung officers are particularly heartening. The decision to credit arrears with effect from January 1, 2006 is most welcome,” said Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Navy chief and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

A separate pay scale has also been carved out for DGPs, GM (Railways), members of boards of Income Tax, Customs and Central Excise, Postal and Ordnance Factories among others to take them to the level of Rs 80,000 in two years as against the three years in the pre-revised scale.

Middle-level police and civilian officers like DIGs, Conservator of Forests, Scientist E and F etc have also been placed in the highest pay band of PB-4.

While there were fears that the revised pay scales may have an impact on inflation, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said there was no threat of missing the budget deficit targets. “The impact of the pay commission report on inflation was factored into when the Cabinet cleared the report after Committee of Secretaries suggested modifications on the report,” he said.

According to Chidambaram, the burden on the Union Budget would be Rs 15,717 crore and Rs 6,414 crore on the Railway budget for the current financial year.
