Newsletter 2.0 has been almost completely rewritten. The is support for list, there is some redesign of the admin panels, the subscribers can change their subscription details (useful only with lists enabled via the {profile_url} to be added on outgoing newsletter).

If you decide to try that version, be sure to have a full backup of your database to roll back if needed.

WordPress 3.0 introduced the multisite concept… and something went wrong with Hyper Cache but only when multisite is active. Standard WordPress blogs which updated to version 3.0 without activating the multisite feature should not have noticed bad Hyper Cache behaviours.

The main problem are the WordPress uploads: with multisite feature active, WordPress serves such files directly instead of leaving Apache (or generally the web server) to do the job. But the service which loads and streams back the file fully initialize WordPress… and the caching systems too.

Now Hyper Cache tries to detect if multisite is active and stop it self when an uploaded file is requested (when the URI contains “/files/”).

I hope that will solve the issue.

I’ve just release Hyper Cache version 2.7.0.

This release, as previous one, is compatible with WordPress 3.0 (I run a number of blog with Hyper Cache and WordPress 3.0) but Hyper Cache has not yet tested with WordPress 3.0 in multisite configuration.

Now the caching is a little more efficient and there is a good surprise for mobile-minded bloggers: Hyper Cache now integrates with WordPress Mobile Pack plugin! WordPress Mobile Pack plugin, as other mobile plugin, contains a mobile detection system and specialized themes for mobile devices.

Other mobile plugins are wp-pda and wptouch.

Integration between a cache system and a mobile plugin is not so direct and easy. I hope to find a good way to integrate with other mobile plugin ASAP.

The cleaning configuration has been removed: now the cleaning process is a little more automated and there is no need to set odd parameters.

PLEASE: AFTER UPGRADING THE PLUGIN, IF NOT DONE AUTOMATICALLY WITH WORDPRESS, DEACTIVATE AND REACTIVATE IT!

Have a nice caching, and let me know if something is going wrong.

Please, if you are experiencing problems try to report directly to me via email (last months where incredibly busy I had not time to read all comments left on this blog).

Please, do not write me “is not working”, it’s hard to solve any problems when the only information is “not working”. As always, to check if Hyper Cache works or not, use a clean browser (clear the cache and the cookies), load a couple of time some pages of your blog and check the HTML source of those pages to see if in the bottom there is the Hyper Cache signature:

<!– hyper cache: 0a58463ffb19a31747f17ef3b268ec43 10-07-11 01:04:07 –>

If the signature is there, Hyper Cache is working.

Yesterday I helped I friend who upgraded to WordPress 3.0 from WordPress 2.9.2. Many admin panel (post edit, plugin list and other) stop to show. Ususally it’s a memory problem. WordPress sets memory limit to 32 megabyte but if you have many plugins installed you can experience out of memory (and if you don’t have the error log to track the problem you only see random blank pages).

To increase the WordPress memory limit, you have simply to edit the wp-config.php file adding this line just below the “define(‘WPLANG’, ”);”:

define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);

that definition rises the memory limit to 64 megabytes. Do not set this limit too high: a “run away” of corrupted scripts can eat up all the server memory (if the server is your you freeze it, if you are hosted your account may be bocked).

To be more conservative you can set the new limit to “40M”.

My laptop (HP) died yesterday. Definitively. In my company there was a MacBook Pro free to be used, but I need Windows. I was used with the mythical Windows XP which has been perfect for my programming day work.

I use Vista on my home laptop, but I don’t like it too much. Since there was some Windows 7 licences, I asked to install it just to not seem too oldish to my colleagues. A nice guy (my chief) installed it on that MacBook Pro (see the photo)… all was fine except the keyboard.

Where is the DEL button? Any programmer needs it! And what about SHIFT-ALTGR to make curly brackets? I have an Italian keyboard, so I need it, I cannot press ALT-CRTL-SHIFT and another key to have a curly brackets. Ok, I know how to play guitar, but this is too much, my left hand refuses to create such complex finger figure!

But a solution is there and it is called SharpKeys. SharpKeys is a very simple program that let you to map any key to any other.

So to have the DEL button on a MacBook Pro with Windows 7, I mapped the F12 key to the DEL, and… it’s fantastic. Then I mapped (but for english keyboards I think there is no need to do it) the keypad enter button (on the right between the “apple” and the directional keys to the special key ALT-CTRL (or ALT GR).

Now I can go back to code…

To get SharpKeys, go here.
