Brendan Savage FLINT, Michigan — With the first day of spring less than three weeks away, it won't be long until golf season begins. Thank goodness. It's been a dreadful winter given the bitter-cold temperatures, frequent snowstorms, outrageous utility bills and endless drama surrounding Flint's pro hockey team. What better thing to look forward to getting away from civilization for a couple of hours on the links? Believe it not, when the local courses begin opening, the lousy economy could actually be a good thing for golfers. Sure, entertainment budgets might be smaller than in the past, but at the same time golf courses are going to have to work harder for our business....

A dozen events remain on the PGA Tour schedule, meaning things can drastically change between now and the final event of the season in November. One thing that will probably remain the same is the battle for the Player of the Year award, which is currently a two-horse race. Voters will have an interesting choice to make when the ballots are cast....

ACME, Michigan --- Forgive the dateline, but I'm in beautiful northern Michigan covering the Michigan Open at the Grand Traverse Resort. (And not playing free golf for those of you who are so interested in stuff like that.) This morning over breakfast at Bob Evan's, I read an interesting column by Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press. Sharp thinks the Detroit Red Wings should retire No. 39 in honor of Dominic Hasek, who hung up his goalie pads Monday after 16 NHL seasons....

Flint Journal file photoJeff Roth hits a tee shot during the Buick Open in 2002. ACME, Michigan --- After struggling for the past couple of months in Champions Tour qualifying tournaments, Flushing's Jeff Roth needed a reason to feel good about this golf game again. He got it Monday in the opening round of the Michigan Open at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Roth, a two-time Michigan Open champion, shot 3-under-par 68 on The Wolverine to share to share place, five shots behind first-round leader Brian Stuard of Jackson entering today's second round....

FLINT, Michigan --- It seems a lot of people don't like my idea of the Flint Generals retiring No. 25 in honor of Darren McCarty. And I'm not just talking about the usual suspects who live to bash Flint in general, the Generals in particular and yours truly just for the fun of it. Lots of die-hard Generals fans don't think it's a good idea....
