Squirrel Takes A Nap

I didn't think squirrels got so tired of running around that they took naps in the middle of the day. Here is a squirrel just outside my bedroom window in my backyard, resting in a tree, and obviously trying to take a nap.

Squirrels have really acute hearing, even though I shot this through my bedroom window, he heard, or saw me raise the blinds, and thats when he looked straight at the camera. Because I wanted to get a shot of him sleeping, I kept the blinds up, and patiently waited.

The squirrel would not have been noticed by me or you if we were walking around the backyard, because their color is camoflauged with the tree branch. Another way nature protects animals from harm.

These pictures were shot with a Canon Digital Rebel Picture #1 was shot at F5.6 1/125 second; #2 was shot at F5.6 1/250 second and picture #3 was shot at F5.6 at 1/160 second.

I didn't photoshop anything, they were all shot in RAW format.

Michael Jackson Memorial To Be Media Circus, Bet On It

You know I was just thinking about the media feeding frenzy surrounding Michael Jackson's death, and couldn't help but feel sorry for his mother, Katherine Jackson. I think we have forgotten that she lost a child, and rightly so, no mother should have to bury her child.

When Joseph Jackson decided to turn his boys into entertainers, he and Katherine loaned Michael Jackson to the world. No one knew back then, 40 some years ago, that little Michael Joseph Jackson from Gary, Indiana would become the musical icon he grew up to be. No one knew his music would unite a world, and give tabloid publications reasons to exist.

Michael died June 25, 2009, six days ago, and it is as if this whole episode has been surreal to me. Surreal because I was one of the millions of little girls who dreamed of someday meeting Michael Jackson. Growing up in Detroit, the Jackson 5 were the finest black boys on the planet. They were all so cute, I couldn't decide which one I wanted to marry. I know I wasn't alone, I'm just admitting it.

I grew up watching those five boys from Gary, Indiana. Watching them each get married, have children, and even break up as a group. Even though they didn't perform together anymore, we all knew they still loved one another as siblings. The only difference between this family and mine, was that their lives were being lived out in the press.

No matter what happened, Michael lying in a hyperbaric chamber; Michael allegedly buying the elephant man's bones; we followed and hung unto every word--good, bad or indifferent.

Now, even though Michael Jackson was our musical icon, our musical legend, Michael Jackson was a father, a brother, and a son. This distinction is enough to make us all step back and give the Jackson family some peace, some private time to mourn.
Michael Jackson doesn't belong to us right now. He doesn't belong to the media, he belongs to his family, we must respect that. Well, at least the media needs to respect it.

It's almost a guarantee that Michael Jackson's funeral will be a media feeding frenzy. CNN has announced that there will be a public viewing at Jackson's Neverland Ranch on Friday. Isn't this the same Neverland Ranch that the tabloids reported that Michael Jackson had sold or lost in foreclosure?

I believe the public viewing will be broadcast on television just as Princess Diana's was. I know the residents there are not looking forward to the hundreds of thousands of people who will undoubtedly show up. Probably as I write this, people may be lining up at Neverland Ranch just to be the first in line to view Michael Jackson's body.

Well, as always, I pray for the strength of the family to endure these coming days. It will be hard, and there will be dark days, but know that you are in the hands of the master, and these days will pass. May you rest in peace Michael Jackson.

Through The Storm

One day a young lady was driving along with her father. They came upon a storm. The young lady asked her father what should she do, he said "keep driving". Cars began to pull over to the side, the storm was
getting worse. What should I do the young lady asked, "keep driving" her father replied. On up a few feet she noticed eighteen wheelers was pulling over also. She told her dad, I must pull over I can barely see
ahead. It is terrible out here everyone is pulling over. Her father told her not to give up just keep driving. Now the storm was terrible but she never stopped driving and soon she could see a little clearer.
After a couple of miles she was on dry land and the sun was out. Her father said now pull over and get out. She said "but why now?" He said
"get out look back, at all the people that gave up and is still in the storm". You never gave up and now your storm is over.

This is a testimony for anyone that is going through something. Just
because everyone else, even the ones that appear to be the largest and
strongest gives up. You don't have to, because if you keep going, on up
ahead your storm will soon be over and the sun will shine upon your face
again.

I hope this touched someone because it did me. Pass it on to someone who
you know is going through or all of your on-line friends. Tell them to
never give up, because GOD will never give up on them.

Farrah Fawcett Charlies Angel Dies At 62

Actress Farrah Fawcett died this morning after a long battle with anal cancer. Her death touched primarily because I care about people, but more so because I grew up wanting to be a ‘Charlies Angel.’

Fawcett was the blonde part of the trio Charlies Angels. The ladies (Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith) solved weekly crimes that the police couldn’t using their beauty and wit. They drove cool cars, wore hip clothing and always seemed to have it together.

From week to week, I would switch up, not being able to decide which Charlies Angel I wanted to be. To me, they were the epitome of cool. It also helped me to gain confidence as an intelligent black girl, that it was okay to be cute and smart all in one.

Today one of those Angels went to heaven.

I remember last month watching the documentary that was produced by her boyfriend Ryan O’Neal about her battle with cancer. I kept thinking, wow, Farrah is so brave to show the world her good days and her bad days. Most people I have known, have been ashamed to share their battle with cancer publicly. But, not Farrah. Farrah Fawcett bravely talked about how ill the chemo made her from time to time.

Farrah shared her disappointment with her medical treatment, and how tired she was having to travel to Germany to get cancer treatments that were not yet available in the United States. She even showed her shaved head to the public. That moment was the ultimate in transparency for me.

Farrah Fawcett was always known for her full mane of hair. Many teenage boys had a poster of her on their walls, showing that famous pose she will forever be known for. So, for Farrah Fawcett to show herself bald, it proved to me that she was approaching cancer with all her might and that the battle was on. Farrah, as we now know, was fighting a losing battle.

Today, as we talk about Farrah Fawcett’s death on the internet and at work, try to think of her as not a celebrity, but as a mother, a woman, a human being who fought cancer to its bitter end. I believe she wanted to show her personal struggle when she decided to allow Ryan O’Neal to film that documentary. I believe she wanted to lift the veil of celebrity and show Farrah Fawcett the woman, the person.

If you’ve ever lost a loved one, then you know mourning is a very private thing. And if you’ve ever lost a child, then it becomes even more painful.

Let’s respect Farrah Fawcett’s family, her father, her son and of course Ryan O’Neal. They are hurting beyond hurt right now. They’ve lost an Angel. Farrah Fawcett, dead at 62.

You Know You Need Twitter School When...

How you know if you need to go to Twitter School. Your updates are lame, no one follows you. That kind of stuff. You may need to go to Twitter School.

Yes, there is etiquette, a format, a way to send status updates. I’m not good at being clever, well, in person I am. But sometimes, online, I’m a little lame. I’m not the type that brags about how much I make online. Rather I’d like to stay on the down low if you know what I mean.

Instead, I like cool conversations. I love promoting others and their work. I consistently look for good articles that are well written and informative. In addition, if you have a funny picture, send it to me, and I will certainly share it with all my followers.

Twitter School is not free. Actually, I’m accepting applications, but you must complete a 2009-2010 Financial Aid Twitter Application. Tuition is $28,000 a year and comes with a Mac Book Air. Class size is personal and limited. Currently, Twitter School is only available as an online course selection. If you thought it was going to be held in an impersonal classroom setting, again, that’s why your status updates are lame.

Ok, here is a peek at the first lesson:

Storm Knocks Down Tree Leaves 8,000 Without Power

Last night's storm in St Louis County has left some 8,000 without power throughout the St Louis Metropolitan area. My oldest sister called me late yesterday afternoon to tell me she was one of the powerless.

Around the corner from my house, a pretty huge tree was also knocked down. Probably struck by lightning, I managed to take some photos of it as the workmen from Hazelwood were working to get it removed.

Having High Blood Pressure Isn't The End Of The World

I have discovered the most awesome smoothie! And guess what? I created it myself. Well, it was really borne out of necessity, but nevertheless, let me tell you what led me here.

Last Friday I had another bout with hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure. My pressure was so high that I couldn't even play in our softball game Friday night. And everyone who knows me knows how much I love softball and baseball. For me not to be able to play, I was really sick. My pressure was 158/98 and my head was throbbing.

Headaches are uncommon with me, so I knew that it was my high blood pressure. You see, I had eaten some fried chicken wings and french fries. Not to say this was the only thing that had me going, it was the thing that pushed me over the brink, the point of no return.

You see, hypertension is a silent killer. I hadn't checked my pressure in a few days, yet I'm sure it was silently creeping up until Friday. Once I ate the fried chicken and fries, that took it past the limit. My heart was pounding, and I felt short of breath. All I wanted to do was lie down and get some sleep. All of a sudden I was just darned tired.

Amazingly enough, the day before while I was praying, the Lord put upon my heart to change my eating habits. He even instructed me specifically what I should eat and how I should prepare it. Ok, I did that Thursday, but Friday, I went back to my own ways. I was craving for some fried chicken wings and when my brother in law told me that was what he was eating, I gave in, and said 'why not?'

Well, my disobedience got me two days in bed as I recuperated. Left to ponder my own stupidity, because I know better. My son had a massive heart attack and a stroke as a result of high blood pressure and diabetes and died. I knew that I was being foolish. So, I decided to follow the meal plan that was biblically given to me. I am being obedient now.

Here is my recipe for my infamous 'GBG Smoothie.' It tastes so good, and is so filling, I could drink it all day long! It's the perfect drink for hot summer days, and it gives you energy, but most of all it is healthy!! Check it out:

You Must Be Holy Because I Am Holy

"You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy."---Leviticus 19:2

We have all entered into a covenant with God when we ask for salvation. This covenant represents an agreement that we make with the Lord in order to receive his blessings and holiness. So, this agreement is between God and His people.

A part of this covenant are instructions. Ways to live, and how to worship--are all found in the Bible. More specifically in the book of Leviticus, the rules, the law, is all spelled out on how we should live, what we should do, how we should behave, if we are to be holy and enter into the holiest of holies.

The book of Leviticus is Old Testament for sure. It is the third book in the Bible just after Genesis and Exodus.

Leviticus is God's guidebook for "His newly redeemed people" showing them how to worship, serve and obey a holy God. With our redemption, we must walk with newness, talk a new way, so that when people see you, they can tell there is something different about you.

I spoke to a friend recently by phone, and she knew me when I was wrapped in sin, and she told me that "I sound different now." That blew my mind, because I didn't know people could hear the change in me over the phone. To me, that "change" she spoke about, evidenced my new way of walking, my new way of thinking in the Lord.

However....

In the book of Leviticus, this gospel takes us back to the beginning, where it all began. It is the beginning that we must return when we make a covenant with God. You see, when we are saved, we begin again, because we are saved and washed of our sins. Thus, we are starting over but with a clean slate.

All the wrong we have done to others, to ourselves, and what has been done to us, has been forgiven. Those wrongs have been cleansed and purged from our souls, from our lives.

There is no more shame; no more guilt; no more condemnation -- we have been made free.

So, this beginning literally means that we are a brand new person made holy by our God who is holy.
"Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established."--Proverbs 16:3 KJV

Faith And The Belief In God

In our daily lives we often have trouble believing. Believing that there is even a God; a Savior, one who will deliver us from this frustrating existence we call life. Some even reach for false prophets and idols because their spiritual minds can not grasp a faith, a God unseen. Having faith in God is complete reliance on Him.

Scripture says: "Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you."---Matthew 9:29 KJV

Faith is the belief in something unseen. Belief in a God who you can not see is not easy. In this modern day of 'gotta have it right now,' it's difficult for us to place our troubles, our lives in the hands of an unseen savior and Lord. There are even those who defiantly say there is no God. That if there was a God, then why would he let bad things happen? Why did He let my wife die, why did he take my son?

Those questions don't just question the existence of an unseen savior. Those questions beg for answers -- immediate answers that will ease the pain of loss from a life cut short. Those questions also open the doors to wisdom and understanding. They are a great starting point for Him to heal our pain.

See, God, is a compassionate healer. He hurts when we hurt; He cries when we cry. He knows what it is like to walk in the flesh. "The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak."---Matthew 26:41 KJV

He knows we want to believe, we want to follow Him, but quite simply we are afraid. Afraid of being persecuted by non-believers, persecuted just for the sake of persecution.

Listen, we will be tested and persecuted for the normal day to day stuff anyway, so being persecuted for your faith, is well, nothing new. "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake."---Matthew 5:11 KJV

You will believe in something, why not believe in God?

WWJD About Legal Marijuana?

PROVERBS 20:1---WINE PRODUCES MOCKERS; ALCOHOL LEADS TO BRAWLS. THOSE LED ASTRAY BY DRINK CANNOT BE WISE.

Scripture speaks to drunkenness and overindulgence in our lives and how these things can ruin a godly life. Can you remember getting so high or drunk that you could not even remember all the things you did while you were drinking? I have. Many times I have prayed to the porcelain god, hoping that whatever was tormenting my body would leave quickly and without harm. That was when I was drinking the so-called good stuff. You know, the cognacs and expensive champagnes. Yes, I remember those days.

Well, I graduated, if you will, moved onto something different. Something that would not leave me hungover in the morning--or so I thought. I began smoking weed. Some call it marijuana, ganja, etc. I keep saying it wasn't an addiction, but as I write this, I have to wonder if it really was.

My reasoning was that if I smoked weed, it wouldn't do as much physical harm to my body as quickly as alcohol would. And, on top of that, God doesn't specifically say anything against marijuana in the Bible, now does He?

Again, it was a trick that the devil was playing. See, the enemy comes to destroy and choke the word from our hearts, and God knows this too (Mark 4:19 KJV). He knows that the enemy is crafty, and that the enemy will cause us to take the word and debate it, and compromise the Word. Compromising the covenant that is between us and God.

So, the enemy tells us there is no scripture anywhere in the Bible that specifically forbids smoking marijuana. And that marijuana is a plant that is grown of the earth, that it is natural, so there is no harm done, right?

That's the rationale I used all those years. Little did I know that I was compromising the Word. There is scripture that speaks to drunkenness--which God specifically condemns.

God condemns drunkenness and anything that causes our ability to think clearly as wrong. Proverbs 20:21 states: "Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise." Basically this means that when you are drunk or high, you lose the ability to think clearly and can not live a wise and balanced life.

Don't get it twisted, I am not preaching a sermon of hypocrisy. Rather, I am speaking from experience. Marijuana was my drug of choice after I stopped drinking because I didn't think God would disapprove of it. My reasoning was the same as yours, 'it's a natural herb,' why not? Well, because I am a thinking woman and always questioning things, I wanted to know what God says about marijuana legalization.

As my pastor told me yesterday, it's pretty clear. "Alcohol is for the dying, and wine for those in bitter distress. Let them drink to forget their poverty and remember their troubles no more." Proverbs 31:7 KJV.

So you drink or smoke marijuana to forget; smoking marijuana will definitely make you forget your troubles along with some other key memories. Smoke enough marijuana and you will certainly expedite the effects of Alzheimer's--just check out some longtime stoners, they don't remember what they did last week and probably not even last night. I know, I have lost quite a few brain cells over the years all for the sake of some good 'smoke.'

Anything that will separate you from the love of God is forbidden. Smoking marijuana impairs our judgment. It keeps us from making the godly decisions that allow us to lead a balanced, wise life. Proverbs 23:19-21 states: "My child listen and be wise: keep your heart on the right course. Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags."

That scripture reminds me of something my mother once told me as a young girl. She said: "A lady never gets drunk because men will try to take advantage of her (body)."

It wasn't just these words that kept me from getting drunk in public (although I would do it in my own home, I felt that didn't count), but it was the way she said it. My mother made it sound as if I would become a slut, a whore if I did these things. And in my household, that just wasn't acceptable to throw your body around to whomever would take it. So, I know somewhere in those words, scripture was based.

What would Jesus do if asked about legalizing marijuana? It's pretty clear, keep His word, live His word and you will not have any questions.

Does The Holy Spirit Speak To Us In Dreams?

Have you ever wondered what your dreams meant?

As far as I can remember, I have always dreamed in color. My dreams are so vivid, it's like I am actually there, caught in a moment of time. The people speak so clearly, I remember exactly what they are wearing, and what color things are.

Just last night I had a dream about my late father.

Being the product of an affair, I never really knew my dad. I mean I knew him because I would speak to him by telephone, and a couple of times when he came to visit. You see, my father lived in Indiana, and I lived in Michigan. And on top of that, he was married. But, the one thing I am blessed for, he introduced me to my other six siblings as a
child.

Last night I dreamed that my father was alive, and that he said his death was a trick. In my dream he was wearing a tan khaki suit--I never saw my father wear a suit before so this was a stretch for me.

It was daylight, and very sunny outside. We were standing outside this almost deserted area on a windy, yet kind of hot day. In his hand he held a piece of paper with directions, like a map of some sort. And he told me that I had to follow these directions through Canada and back down to Philadelphia. He also asked me was I familiar with a toll booth, because I would pass through one in Canada.

Lastly, he told me I had to gather all my brothers and sisters and bring them along with me.

I don't know if I took the journey or not, because it was then that I woke up. Yet, I was very tired when I awoke, as if I had been busy while sleeping.

Because I am in the midst of a spiritual journey, seeking God wholeheartedly daily, maybe this is God speaking to me. Actually, I am certain it is, because scripture says that the Spirit of the Lord speaks to us in dreams and visions. I just don't know what is being revealed to me, at least not yet.

Then this past Saturday night, I dreamed that I was trudging along in muddy waters, that I was tired but not giving up....still tarrying along to my destiny. I was alone, with no one for miles, yet I could see a body of water with a boat there. I was trying to get to this water and the boat so that my journey could be made easier.

I don't know what either of these dreams mean. I truly believe the Holy Spirit is saying something to me, and I am listening for further instruction.

Hydroxycut Banned: Now What?

Some weight loss tips, that are old skool but they work....

Now that the FDA has banned Hydroxycut, people who are seeking to lose weight are scrambling to find a substitute. I guess I'm just old fashioned, but there is no quick answer to weight loss. If it took you 10 years to gain that extra 100 pounds, then its probably gonna take you just as long to lose it.

For women over 35, our metabolism slows down, throwing a monkey wrench into our efforts. I hear it from my friends all the time, that no matter how much they exercise, they lose inches and not a lot of pounds. Or they lose ounces and not pounds. This can be the source of great frustration.

Don't get frustrated though. There are things you can use to lose weight, safely and effectively.

In the past, I've written about Acai Berry and how it helps cleanse the colon. I don't buy into the weight loss claim, but maybe someone has lost weight taking it, I haven't. Acai Berry is good for keeping things regular, if you know what I mean. And that is a plus, health wise.

Exercise is and always has been the way I lose weight.

This summer, I'm playing softball on a co-ed team, and believe me, it makes a big difference getting out there being active, versus watching television and being on a computer all day.

The key to healthy weight loss and keeping it off is getting active. You've got to remind your body that it can do something other than be a storehouse for Popeye's chicken and White Castle slyders.

If you're not to keen on playing softball, then doctors, medical gurus, have been telling people for years that the safest, most effective method of activity is walking. Get out there and walk a bit. Set small goals, then gradually progress until you are walking a few miles a day.

My two sisters and I walk just for the sake of walking. There are lots of parks around our homes, and we make use of them. Walking is good for you, burns off calories, helps you lose weight, and is easy on those fragile knees!

Make sure you drink at least 8 -8 ounce glasses of water a day. Water is good for weight loss as well. I drink 84 ounces of water a day--I know this because I set out 5 -16.9 bottles of water daily as part of my health regimen. I do it daily that it is like getting up brushing my teeth. Water is good for you, make it a part of your healthy lifestyle.

The Birds In My Yard

Help me to identify these birds! I know at least one of them is a male cardinal. However, there was one pecking in the tree on the side of my house and making a weird noise. I've never seen a woodpecker before, so I'm not sure if it is a woody the woodpecker.

Scripture Postcards And Other Stuff

Wow, it's been almost two weeks since I last posted. Well, I've been pretty busy. From travelling to Detroit to help out a sick friend, to creating a line of photo scripture cards. Oh, and don't let me forget about the softball team!

Yeah the softball team is going to have its own story to tell in the coming 10 weeks. Believe me, my mind tricked me. Had me thinking this 48 year old body could revisit my youth of 20 years ago. Oh boy, let me tell you, I have never ever welcomed a hot bath the way I have been this week!

Each morning I wake up and take another hot bath just so I can loosen up the sleeping bones from the night before. Yes, I am sore, stiff, but having a lot of fun doing this. I can't wait until the games begin next week. I'll be sure to give you an accounting of our won loss record.

Another project I've begun are Scripture Postcards. God put the idea on my mind and heart and directed me to do something meaningful with my photos. I've been taking pictures for almost 20 years now, beginning with film and now transitioning to digital. Taking pictures is like breathing to me, I have to do it.

One of my best friends had surgery last week and she needed some help after her procedure. So I went up to Detroit and helped for as long as I could. That's the beauty of being an internet marketer, you can do your job from anywhere in the world and not miss a beat.

My only regret is, I wish I could have stayed longer with her.
