My goal is to spend $400 or less per month, ultimately getting the bill down to $200 or less per month. I am just getting back into really couponing. I never stopped using the ecoupons, or Ibotta and other grocery rebate apps, and the ones that get mailed to me by the stores loyalty programs. Occasionally I would print some out even, but I had stopped getting the Sunday Paper because I would never get around to clipping the coupons to use them. I am trying to stockpile some easy snacks to take in the car this summer. We got season passes to Kings Island for Christmas and we don't want to spend a ton of money on food when we go :)

Making a Budget/Plan for Windfall Money

Do you have a budget for windfall money? Or do you just spend it on whatever until the money is gone? We fell into the latter category before I read America's Cheapest Family Gets You Right on the Money: Your Guide to Living Better, Spending Less, and Cashing in on Your Dreams years ago(2005 or 2006-I think!). This piece of advice is one of the main reason my family is now where we are financially. The other is our day to day budget and living within our means. We are a single income family, and have been almost the entire 11.5 years we have been together. According to the U.S. governments latest guidelines, we are just barely above the poverty line for a family of 5.
On this small income we are able to own 2 vehicles, bought a house in a very nice neighborhood with great schools, and we still have money we are able to save, spend, and invest. We are doing pretty well for having a "small" income. My husbands coworkers used to always be shocked to learn I didn't work when they heard we just bought a house in the neighborhood we are in.

First I want to clear up what windfall money is. It is a lump sump of money in addition to any regular income you have. Examples include but are not limited to :

Bonuses from work
Cash gifts
Income tax refunds
Lottery winnings
Inheritance
Settlement money(for lawsuits or insurance claims)
Any overtime at work above what your normal work week is( at one point, 50 hrs a week was normal for me, so anything 51+ was "windfall" to help make headway on goals and to plump up the savings)
And so on...

When we receive windfall money we know right away that a percentage will be added to our main savings account, a percentage will be used to pay down our mortgage, and a percentage will be spent buying items we see as enhancing our daily lives, making life easy, or that help us save money through the year.

This year's income tax refund will be split 33% into savings, 33% into projects in our yard/garden, and 33% will go to the principal on our mortgage. 1% will be left for extra gas money during the summer(all those trips to the parks!).

Misc Earnings 2013

At the end of last year, I lost my job. I was working for an awesome concept store for a very well known company. The company was having issues, it got a new CEO. That CEO made hard choices which resulted in my coworkers and I facing unemployment in the thick of the holiday season. We were able to work until early January, but then we all had to find new sources of income.

I panicked. In the midst of looking for new jobs I also started really focusing on all those small ways to make money like I did when I was a stay at home mom. I was fortunate to find another job almost as soon as the old one ended (and got to stay with the company!). But those weeks of uncertainty really got me back on the scene of earning small streams of income.

I was curious about how much each effort was making me so I set up the spreadsheet above to log every time I cashed out with each site or app. Some of the sites/apps do have balances but don't
show earnings. I only logged what I cashed out. When I do cash out the others, they will be logged.

I was able to accumulate over $900 during the year! The top earners for me were Swagbucks ($530) and Crowdtap ($85). I will go over each way I earned in the coming months so you can replicate my success- and avoid the ways that didn't prove profitable!

How to Make Money with Your Smart Phone: Endorse

Groceries are one of the largest expenses for most households, this is also one of the easiest areas to trim cost if you really try. If you have a smart phone, "couponing" just got a little easier! There are now rebate apps for everyday groceries. One of these is Endorse.

Endorse gives you a percentage of the price of the item back. Endorse has offers that aren't brand specific, which is really nice. For example, you can get up to 50% back on any brand of diapers. Make sure you click the "terms" link so you understand just what you will be getting back(in the past, this offer had a limit of $5).

You can use Endorse with paper coupons, ecoupons, and printable coupons, but your % back will be based on the cost AFTER those coupons come off.

First, you will need to sign up with and download Endorse to your smart phone. You can do this very quickly with your facebook account. Once you download the app to your phone, you can browse the offers. Many of the offers allow you to "upgrade" to get a larger percentage back.

Once you know what offers are available you can go shopping. You will then "upload" or take a photo of your grocery receipt to show you purchased the items. Make sure your grocery store is a participating partner before you shop.

In my experience, it has taken less than 24 hours to get the rebates back in my Endorse account. It then took less than 24 hours to send that money to my paypal account!

In addition to getting cash back for your purchase, you will also accumulate points to apply toward a charity of your choice(and the donation is made in YOUR name).

Plans for smart phones can be a small fortune, so when I upgraded to one I also researched how I could earn something to help offset the cost. One app that I really like is Viggle .

Viggle is an app that gives you points for watching t.v. You tap the screen to "check in" to a show. This activates your phones microphone for 10-15 seconds so the app can identify the show. You receive one point per minute of television that you watch. There are also opportunities to earn bonus points by watch advertisements when they pop up, playing along to trivia as you watch a show, and playing "fantasy" sports games as you watch a game. Certain shows also earn you bonus points for watching them on their first run (as they air, not reruns or dvred), typically those bonuses are between 50 and 200 points. If you are a Direct TV customer you will get even more bonus points.

The rewards vary from CVS, Best Buy, Burger King, Fandango, Old Navy and many more. It is simple to redeem for a reward. Once you reach the required number of points you select the reward tab on the app and select what you want. I picked a $5 CVS gift card. My gift card was emailed to me immediately. You can also go into the app at any time and resend your reward email.
