We often rail upon merchandise from institutes such as the Franklin and Danbury Mints, because most of the little trinkets, bric-a-brac, and tchotchkes that they've offered to the public had been worthless when it was first purchased, is worthless now, and will always be worthless unless someday aliens invade Earth and the only way to bribe them into a ceasefire is to give them all world's collector plates and novelty chess sets. However, there are exceptions to every rule...

The Perfected Model

Between 1909 and 1920, Smith & Wesson manufactured the last in the line of their break open revolvers, the .38 Double Action Perfected Model. There were only 59,400 made, and they are identified by having both a top latch and a side latch.

On January 6, 2011, we were privileged to offer the contents of an historic Stroudsburg estate. Bidding was strong on all 227 items, but leading the pack were a group of Ideal Bookcase Units produced by The Globe-Wernicke, Co. of Cincinnatti, OH. These deluxe stacking bookcase units featured ornate carvings, beveled and leaded glass, and bases with drawers. The beauty of these units attracted bidders from Pennsylvania, New York, Mississippi, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

The fact is that most estates do not contain a single "home run piece" worth thousands of dollars. On August 12, 2010 we, the Savo Auctioneers, offered more than 250 lots of vintage trains, toys, and comic books -- over 90% of which was consigned from one estate. Bidding was intense as collectors from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and several other states competed to claim their share of pristine Lionel and American Flyer trains, Fawcett Publication sports comics, Tootsietoys, and other fine playthings from the past. Leading the pack, however, were a large assortment of 1960s Lesney Matchbox cars in their original boxes and a selection of classic 1950s/1960s promotional automobiles models.

Under his "Enlightened Rule," the country began its modernization and achieved its status as a world power through sweeping political, social, and economic changes. The Meiji Period also saw achievements in Japanese bronze works exemplified by pieces such as the Meiji bronze tiger that we, the Savo Auctioneers, sold on July 1, 2010.

Frankart & Art Deco Collection Tops $14K

Perhaps nothing better epitomizes the Art Deco movement than Frankart: lamps, figurines, and other decorative items fashioned after the form of an elegant female nude and accessorized with equally beautiful glass shades and vases. Frankart was mass produced in the 1920s and 1930s out of white lead composition and spray painted a variety of colors. Though such a method of production sounds inauspicious, Frankart remains one of the most sought after artifacts of the Art Deco era, and its collectors are passionate and well informed.
