Unforgettable, Great Dads on Oprah

I don't watch Oprah very often, though when I do, it's surprisingly good TV, even for me as a guy. My wife doesn't watch her show very much either, though when she was on maternity leave, I think she became a closet fan. Yesterday, Oprah did a great segment on unforgettable, unconventional dads. It's about time, Oprah - thanks! Do more of these segments, please ;)

Dads more confident than moms re: parenting?

Can parents really "learn" how to parent, or is it innate? That is the question of this study and this NYT article. 3 interesting insights from this study:

1. Ironically, dads seem to be more confident about moms regarding parenting.

2. As a result, moms were more open to learn new parenting skills than dads.

3. Were dads so confident because they didn't even know what they didn't know? It's one of those things where: the more you know, the more you realize you don't know.

Now, there are experts saying the recession won't be the "typical" 8-12 months long - it will be more like 2-3 years. For more on recessions, check out Roubini's description of the "L curve" Also, here's a good history of all previous recessions in the US.

Warren Buffet on the economy and investing

Regardless of what you think of Warren Buffett, he is one of the richest men on the face of the planet. And he made his money investing it in great companies with great management teams doing good business that he can understand. Every year he writes an annual letter to his shareholders - it is remarkably transparent and written in remarkably plain-old English - quite refreshing for a multibillionaire CEO. Anyway, check it out.

Micro-exercise: Coming to workplaces & schools near you?

This NYT article claims, "The best way to improve children’s performance in the classroom may be to take them out of it." That's right, recess (especially if it's outdoors) may actually help kids learn better. And beyond recess, how about incorporating action and exercise right into math? NPR showed us what kind of "deskercise" these elementary school kids do in SC to keep mental sharpness.

And it turns out this stuff might work for us grown-ups, too. I heard this report on NPR on the benefits of "micro-exercise" - short, 10-minute breaks to keep your mind working efficiently throughout the day. Especially for us office workers who sit around in front of computers and in long meetings, this is a great reminder! If that's not enough, follow this stay-at-home-dad on twitter - he's posting hourly micro-exercise suggestions right on twitter.
