In the mid-'30s, he turned his attention to the aviation industry, where he quickly became a world-renowned celebrity for shattering speed and distance records. He also continued to test the limits of flight technology, building bigger, faster, and stronger aircrafts. All the while, he struggled with an obsessive-compulsive mental disorder that sent him into a full-fledged tailspin after a near-fatal plane crash. The film concludes with Hughes being called to the Senate in '47 to defend himself against nefarious Senator Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who accused Hughes of taking money from the United States government during wartime.

A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly abandoned home to look after a mentally disturbed resident, she soon discovers that there's an evil--and very aggressive--presence in the house, and it's lashing out at every person that sets foot inside. Having directed both the original JU-ON and its sequel in Japan, Shimizu was very familiar with his own tale of terror by the time he directed its 2004 incarnation. Using many of the key actors from the previous films (including Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki who have unforgettable roles), Shimizu recreates the story with the added advantage of a Hollywood budget (acquired with the help of producer Sam Raimi of SPIDER-MAN fame, who is also a noted horror-movie director). As with many Japanese horror films (particularly the original RING, which strongly influences this movie), THE GRUDGE relies on atmosphere over plot, resulting a series of utterly chilling moments that will leave viewers fascinated and unbelievely frightened.

Funny Games

In 1997 writer-director Michael Haneke (CACHE) made the controversial Austrian thriller FUNNY GAMES about two young men who terrorize a family on vacation. A decade later Haneke was convinced by producer Chris Coen to bring the story to America filming a nearly word-for-word shot-for-shot English-language version even re-creating the locations and sets as obsessively as possible. Shortly after Ann (Naomi Watts) George (Tim Roth) and Georgie (Devon Gearhart) arrive in their country home Peter (Brady Corbet) an eerily polite young man dressed all in white including odd white gloves appears on the doorstep asking Ann if he can borrow some eggs for their neighbor. Peter is joined by Paul (Michael Pitt) and the Leopold-and-Loeb-like duo are soon doing horrible things to Ann George and Georgie torturing them both physically and psychologically (nearly all the violence occurs off-screen) for no apparent reason other than they can referring to the whole thing as a game. And the biggest game of all is whether the family will be alive at the end. FUNNY GAMES is an intense experience driven by Haneke's careful manipulation of both the film itself and the audience. He's trying to shake up the viewer even having Paul address the audience directly several times with Paul fully aware of what he is doing and how the audience is most likely responding. And in one unforgettable scene Haneke pulls the cathartic rug right out from under the viewer playing with the actual medium of cinema in an infuriating and ingenious way. Roth and Watts give outstanding performances as the victims matched by Pitt and Corbet's deeply unsettling creepiness. Just as Peter and Paul (who also call themselves Tom and Jerry and Beavis and Butt-Head) alternate between calm and violent the soundtrack alternates between classical music by Handel Mozart and others and hardcore punk from John Zorn and Naked City.

Joy Division

Fans of the gloomy Manchester-based band from the late 1970s will have less to feel down about with the release of this rockumentary. JOY DIVISION follows the unlikely rise of these working class lads up to Ian Curtis's suicide which tore the band apart until it was reborn as New Order. Included here is rare footage of the group as well as their moody and starkly photographed videos capturing the essence of what made Joy Division so special and so tragic.

Based on the memoir TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE by Deborah Curtis Anton Corbijn s CONTROL is as near perfect a filmic telling of the story of Joy Division and Ian Curtis as any fan could hope for. It s also a beautifully rendered piece of cinema about the crippling effects of love and regret and the salvation we seek in art. Born out of England s post-Sex Pistols punk explosion Joy Division played a dark minimalist version of the nascent sound and became cult heroes thanks in part to their brilliant yet disturbed frontman Ian Curtis (played by an eerily perfect Sam Riley). Corbijn does a wonderful job recreating the Manchester band s music and live show cutting straight to the essence of Joy Division s unique appeal. Credit must also be given to the three actors who portray the rest of Joy Division. Playing all the instruments themselves they perfectly capture the band s powerfully stoic presence one that translates both live and on record into the sonic equivalent of an existential crisis.CONTROL however is ultimately about Curtis s tumultuous marriage with his wife Deborah (Samantha Morton) and the way that Joy Division became an aesthetic manifestation of his pain--one that was both physical (Curtis was an epileptic) and emotional. Corbijn evokes Curtis s hurt and isolation with both honesty and subtlety: a photographer originally he frames each shot to look like a stark black-and-white photo from an album the audience was never meant to see making Curtis s pain palpable and his eventual suicide that much more tragic. The overtones to the later suicide of Kurt Cobain are hard to avoid but where Cobain s suicide has always been discussed in terms of the pressure he felt as a rock star Curtis s as rendered by Corbijn is a pain anyone could potentially be forced to suffer through.

Dick Tracy: Rko Classic Collection

The comic-strip crimefighter Dick Tracy created by Chester Gould was part of the Saturday matinee serials starring Ralph Byrd. In 1945 RKO revived the Tracy series and Morgan Conway was chosen to portray Tracy in a pair of feature films: Dick Tracy and Dick Tracy vs. Cueball. RKO's earliest publicity photos posed Conway in profile hoping to imitate Gould's square-jawed caricatures. Although Conway s screen Tracy didn't resemble the print Tracy in the flesh Conway's dramatic interpretation was faithful; he gave the role a humble businesslike quality while keeping with police procedure. Morgan Conway is considered by many to be the best on screen Dick Tracy. Although Conway's Tracy was praised by critics as the closest to Gould's original concept the public seemed to prefer Byrd who returned in the role for the final two RKO features. To them Ralph Byrd was Dick Tracy. RKO accepted this and hired Byrd to finish the series. Dick Tracy's Dilemma and Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome. Boris Karloff spices up the final RKO feature as the fearsome bad guy known as Gruesome. All four movies had many of the visual features associated with film noir: dramatic shadowy photographic compositions with many exterior scenes filmed at night. In addition RKO stocked the films with familiar faces creating a true rogues' gallery of characters. Max Allan Collins -- who took over the writing of the TRACY strip from Chester Gould and went on to create ROAD TO PERDITION -- provides informative on-screen introductions to each film exclusive to this VCI release.
