I wanted to take some time to process things before I posted anything about receiving my BJJ brown belt on Monday 16th December 2019, not to try to be profound but to correctly convey what this means to me. It is so much more than just a belt and a promotion to me. Upon receiving it I couldn’t not talk about Karl, but to do so in this context is quite painful for me, but I knew, as soon as I started to write about Karl it would take more than just a few words.

All of my previous promotions in BJJ came from Karl so it was a very emotional moment to reach this milestone and not have him there. I am still quite emotional about it and also shocked, I didn’t expect to be promoted just yet, if ever, but I am truly honoured and privileged to be awarded my brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by Matt Inman, president of SBG UK and head coach at SBG Manchester and the man Karl always knew would one day take up the reigns.

Matt is an amazing MMA fighter and an even better coach, he Is also the hardest working, most dedicated man I know; he puts his team and the gym before everything else. Thank you for everything Matt, the painful beatings and the even more, at times, painful truth.

The ego is a funny thing, it makes you think you deserve something when you don’t and don’t deserve something when you do.

‘But I trust in my coach’s experience and ethics.’

I want to thank coach Chris Coltrane, who is without doubt the most humble and egoless martial artist on the planet. Chris is always encouraging and always willing to run through things with you in his own time, no matter what your level. He is an absolute legend and fantastic BJJ player and coach.

A big thank you to Casey Jones; Karl’s first black belt and the most incredible coach. Casey coached me through many the fundamentals of BJJ and their importance. If you want to learn worm guard or donkey guard, he’s probably not your man. If you want to learn to smash pass a guard in the most direct and effective way whilst simultaneously making your opponent feel at his most uncomfortable then he is the man. I always look forward to Casey coaching at the Manchester gym. Quite frankly, he is the best there is!

Thank you to Abdul Choudhury. To see the true essence and effectiveness of BJJ and how the smaller man can effortlessly dominate and defeat a much bigger opponent, then watch and learn from Coach Abdul. No matter your age, size and level, you can learn so much from Abdul. Great coach and a man whom I am proud to call my friend.

Ella Tanswell for her love and support, strength and courage. Such a kind, generous, humble and honest human being, the epitome of a real martial artist. A UK legend in Muay Thai and now a BJJ black belt! just incredible, such an inspiration. My reaching brown belt level would definitely not have been possible without Ella’s determination and iron will to keep things running just the way Karl would have wanted and also to encourage me to carry on training.

I wasn’t sure if I could ever train again when we lost Karl, my coach, my hero, my teacher in so many ways, my younger big brother, my friend, my real, always there for me friend. I haven’t said much about Karl over the past two years because it hurts so much to do so. But I feel like now is not only an appropriate time but a necessary time.

It is hard for me to imagine that Karl and I started our grappling journey together; this was at his first gym, Defence Unlimited in Piccadilly, around 1994. We met through our mutual friend and JKD coach, Steve Powell. I started having private sessions in JKD and Filipino martial arts with Karl, two systems that he was very versed in.

I also trained a little Muay Thai and western boxing to compliment these arts. Although Karl was very dedicated to the arts he was coaching at the time, he was definitely getting a little disillusioned with some of them and was looking for other avenues to explore, particularly the grappling arts. There weren’t any real grappling coaches in the area at that time and definitely no BJJ coaches. Everything was learned from video tapes and seminars. We attended seminars from the likes of Erik Paulson, Larry Hartsell, Rick Young, Marco Ruas, Royce Gracie, old school wrestlers, grapplers and NHB fighters.

Whilst writing for Combat magazine, I managed to get us both our first gis for free, in return for writing a review; I think they were probably karate gis as they were quite thin and didn’t last very long but they were better than nothing. I started training a bit of ne-waza with Mike Gregory, another JKD instructor from Leigh and Karl started judo with Steve Pullen. When we got together for my private sessions, would go over what we had both learned.

There weren’t really any events to test your grappling skills back then so Karl would put little interclub grappling sessions together with the likes of Mike Gregory’s gym. In my first comp at around 70kg I competed against the legendary Ian Bromley! That was an eye opener. He wasn’t quite the grappler he became, thankfully, but still a monster. The little inter-clubs would eventually become the ‘Sub- League,’ one of the first and most popular grappling events in the North West.

Around about this time, life got in the way of my training so I stopped for a while. Karl continued coaching and training, learning and evolving. His appetite for BJJ was growing exponentially, he received his blue belt from Royce Gracie and then his purple from SBGi President, Matt Thornton, SBG UK was born and he was now on his path to BJJ mastery.

Mine and Karl’s relationship changed from that of coach / student to that of friends and business partners. We spent lots of time together outside of the gym for the next 20 years or so. We worked on some amazing projects together, some that were successful, some not and many never realised. Perhaps something we did discuss, yet to come?

Although we got together very often and I had some privates with Karl and some of his other coaches, I didn’t start training fully with Karl again until around 2003 for a brief spell and then more seriously around 2010. I was still a white belt in BJJ and Karl had just received his black belt from Coach Thornton the year before. I remember feeling old even back then and felt it unlikely that I would ever really achieve much in a combat sport full of hungry, young athletes but nevertheless, I just wanted to train and be around the gym again.

In 2012, I lost my job and found myself with no income, Karl didn’t hesitate to help me out. Although the current gym was still in its infancy with very few members, he gave me a job and paid me a basic salary out of his own pocket, not gym profits, his own money. He also gave me a very good commission-based income. I always, always wanted to get out of the 9-5 routine and Karl always encouraged me to do so; the opportunity Karl gave me allowed me to do just that and I am now very happily self-employed. I would never have been able to do that without Karl and obviously dear Ella, who still looks out for me just as well as Karl did.

Since I started training regularly, I’ve had some pretty bad injuries that threatened to stop me training, some serious medical conditions that also prompted specialists to advise me to stop training and a number of personal issues that drained me emotionally and mentally. Throughout all of these low times, Karl was always there for me and he helped me through them, offering to pay for some of my medical bills. He always listened to my problems without judgement and offered help, advice and support and; I hope I can say that I did the same for him in his own times of despair.

Karl and I shared a lot of personal thoughts and feelings, heart aches, insecurities, vulnerabilities, financial problems, work problems and life problems. Most people know Karl as being a strong, no nonsense tough guy, a martial arts visionary and world class coach; of course he was all of those things, but he had a side to him that many people didn’t often see; he was also a gentle, kind, caring, loving man with a heart of gold. A man who would go out of his way for you and give you the coat off his back if you needed it, although there’s every possibility that he had nicked it in the first place, but joking aside, Karl was a straight up genuine guy who treated his close friends like family and had time and respect for most everybody. He was fiercely loyal and he expected the same back; if you crossed him that was that, he didn’t suffer fools or disingenuous people and had no time for bullshit and excuses. Many people think he was cold and uncaring, he most definitely wasn’t, he was incredibly caring, perhaps too caring at times and it hurt him terribly when people let him down, especially when he had given them so much.

He would give people his all, his knowledge, free training, a place to stay, he would travel around the world with fighters for nothing in return, just to ‘be there’ for his fighter, he gave people money, love and respect and all he asked was for the same kind of loyalty and respect in return. He rarely, if ever asked for anything from anybody. He was one of a kind, a truly remarkable man. I owe him so much and I am sure many, many more people feel the same way.

Eleven years ago, I never thought I’d get to where I am in BJJ, in fact I probably doubted I’d even still be training today; if I am being honest, I think Karl would have probably thought the same. But I am still training; I feel fit and strong and somewhat competitive, even if I am falling to pieces on the inside but as Coach Zenon said to me last night “at least you only have one more ironman to go.”

My longevity and growth owes so much to the effectiveness of the SBG curriculum and the amazing coaching and training I have received from Karl Tanswell, Matt Inman, Chris Coltrane, Casey Jones, Glyn Powditch, Zenon Ogar, Abdul Choudhury, Elliot Powell, Sundeep Manik, Jay P and Jon Bond. A special shout out to Jonathan Lee, an amazing coach who was there pretty much from the beginning. I’ll keep trying to tempt him back.

I am honoured and forever grateful to be a part of the greatest BJJ and MMA team in the world and I am honoured to call Karl and Ella, all of the coaches and all of the guys and girls at SBG Manchester my friends and my family.

SBG Manchester had more success on ICE FC 10 on December 5th 2015.

Amateur Fighters Elliot Powell and Abdul Choudury both increased their win streaks in an impressive manner whilst professional fighter Azi Thomas, stepping in on the last minute, completely dominated his opponent.

Abdul Choudury vs Luke Shanks Flyweight

Another outstanding win for the SBG Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple belt Abdul Choudury, who once again showed his superior grappling, proving that skill can overcome adversity when taking on a much bigger opponent.

This win takes Abdul to 3-0 in his amateur career.

[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][av_video src=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z48bPvJZ73M’ format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′]

Elliot Powell vs Brad Dallison – Featehrweight

Quite possibly one of the most exciting fights of the night, a back and forth fight with both fighters throwing heavy bombs. Powerful Powell looked to be in trouble early on in the fight but showed the most amazing heart and some sharp, technical and devastating striking skills to KO his opponent in the second round

Elliot now goes 2-0 in his career.

[av_video src=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5DaMzK1sXQ’ format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′]

Azi Thomas vs Steve Webster – Ligthweight

Stepping in on short notice Azi Thomas took his professional MMA record to 5-1, his only loss coming via disqualification for a dubious illegal up kick. There was no controversy in this fight though as Thomas completely dominated his opponent, both on the ground and standing.

Azi has a professional boxing record of 4-0 so his punching is on point but in this fight he demonstrated that he can also kick, knee and grapple. It was a crushing knee that dropped Webster and allowed Thomas to finish the fight via tap out due to ground and pound strikes at 3:30 of the first round.

[av_video src=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA9I034z1rE’ format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Having anticipated a tough fight against Gavin ‘The War Horse’ Sterrit, ‘Stapes’ came out from the opening bell hungry and ready to do work. In just over a minute, Stapes sank in a rear naked choke to be crowned the World Champion.

He now officially sits at the top of the talent filled roster of the BAMMA lightweight division. All of his outings for the BAMMA promotion have seen him finish world class competition with each performance showing an improved Martin Stapleton.

Becoming a world champion Stapleton’s goal since he first started competing professionally in 2007, so when asked by Severe MMA what he planned to do next, his answer was short and concise;

“Keep bringing me world class opponents and I’ll just keep dropping ‘em.”

This Saturday, November 7th 2015, SBG Manchester, HQ of SBG UK, hosted its first SBG supa seminar. Three of UKMMA’s finest pros in Matt Inman, Saul Rogers and Martin Stapleton came together to deliver a three hour grappling seminar on a packed mat.

Saul Rogers put the afternoon in motion with a focus on wrestling postures, looking at small details that make the huge differences. ‘Stapes’ Stapleton followed suit demonstrating a pressure in the guard, using some wrestling concepts, to get the sweep or submission. Inman finished off the seminar with his signature heel hook, addressing the stigma that surrounds the submission when dangerously approached. The seminar closed out with a quick Q&A with all three coaches present, sharing their expertise to solve problems for those in attendance.

The three teammates are all head coaches in their own gyms. Matt leading the classes at SBG Manchester, Stapleton at FCPC, Saul Rogers at Team Saul Roger’s MMA Academy, the value on the mat could not be taken for granted. The environment created by the quality of coaching combined with dedicated students was nothing short of world class. With Stapes fighting for the BAMMA world title in under a week, Inman looking for his third consecutive win in the past three months the week after, and Saul currently in The Ultimate Fighter the afternoon was a literal example of leading from the front.

The most recent installment of Full Contact Contender (FCC) 14 saw SBGUK’s Matt Inman and Jordan ‘Handsome’ Desborough headline and co-headline the card picking up professional wins to add to their record, via 2nd round TKO.

Matt Inman, coming off his last win on FCC13 for the European Welterweight Title, displayed a performance boasting new additions to his striking arsenal before the referee stepped in to call an end to the bout. For the majority of the fight Inman kept his opponent, Dez Parker, at range with straight punches and an array of kicks but was quick to land knees and elbows in the clinch once the distance had closed.

A punishing knee from the clinch followed by a straight in the 2nd put his opponent down and the fight was stopped with Inman successful in defending his Title.

Jordan ‘Handsome’ Desborough, also coming off a win on FCC13, put on a dominant grappling display to co-headline the event. From the off Desborough showed an improved skillset on the feet, landing shots and transitioning into his wrestling, before going to work on the ground. Controlling position, Desborough stayed active landing elbows from top. The moments when Desborough was on bottom he showed an active guard to sweep and regain control of the fight. In the 2nd Desborough took the back of his opponent before flattening him out and landing unanswered shots, bringing the fight to an end.

Both Inman and Desborough have stayed active, since the Cage Warriors hiatus, earning a winning streak in the domestic circuit. Developments in skillset from bout to bout are evident in their
fights and momentum is on their side. Matt Inman already booked for Made 4 The Cage in a few short weeks, the SBGUK team look to stay busy in November with bouts booked for both Pros and Amateurs.

Hears a look at some of the work that goes on in the mornings at SBG Manchester. This video shows clips of some of the professional and up and coming amateur athletes drill and technical spar. The level and intensity for each individual varies and depends on what stage of fight preparation the fighter is. The morning sessions shift between instruction and isolation drilling and the integration and sparring drills on the video.

Currently on the mat preparing for upcoming bouts is Jorden Desbourgh who is making his return to Cage Warriors on September 13th with team mate Azi Thomas who will be fighting on the same card. Martin Stapleton and Aaron Wilkinson are both signed to Bellator and will be returning to the USA to compete on the next Bellator card in Fresno, Califonia September 19th. Two more CageWarriors signed fighters Matt Inman and Saul Rogers are on the mat daily building their game for CageWarriors bouts later in the year. We also have news that the one and only Alex Minogue will be walking into the welterweight ranks.

You can read the interview below.

Be sure to check out YourMMA’s website here and make sure you follow them on twitter and Facebook for all the latest news.

In this series, ‘2013: A Year In Review’, we’ll be looking back on a great year for UK MMA by talking to some of the top gyms and promotions, getting their highlights, lowlights and achievements from the last twelve months. Stay tuned to all of the articles by following us on twitter and liking us on facebook.

SBG Mainline

Manchester’s SBG branch have been on the circuit for many years under the guidance of head coach Karl Tanswell. However, 2013 really was a year where lots of their MMA team started to make themselves known, or increased their prominence.

The city centre gym is teeming with talent and there are several pros leading the way, as well as a host of active, high-level BJJ practitioners. Delve into what constituted this massive year for the team, thanks to head coach Karl Tanswell.

Can you give us an overview of the team and its history?

The gym started as Defence Unlimited back in 1995. We didn’t become SBG until a few years later. We had fighters compete in NHB and Vale Tudo shows as early as 1997 or maybe even earlier, before MMA was a mainstream sport. Since then the team has evolved along with the sport and we have had fighters in hundreds of tournaments globally, from the smallest local shows right up to the biggest promotions in the world.

We have had three gyms in Manchester City Centre over the years, and were the first doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts.

Can you tell us about the facilities and the coaching staff at SBG?

The gym has a large matted space for general training and classes, a full size cage for sparring rounds and a strength and conditioning area. Because of a huge increase in memberships we are now looking to relocate to bigger premises.

The current staff structure includes:

Myself (Karl Tanswell) as Head Coach, Trainer – BJJ black belt, licensed pro boxing trainer.
Ella Tanswell, my wife who deals with the business side of things – BJJ Blue Belt, Muay Thai World Kickboxing Champion, and a very funny person!
Simon Kenny, who is our gym manager and deals with all the memberships, gym websites, media, marketing and communications – BJJ Blue Belt

Coaches:

Matt Inman – MMA Coach, BJJ Brown Belt, Pro MMA Fighter, Pro Boxer, Cornerman
Jon Bond – Striking Coach, ABA Boxing Instructor, Jivamukti Yoga Instructor, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Cornerman
Casey Jones – BJJ Coach – BJJ Black Belt
Chris Coltrane – BJJ Coach – BJJ Black Belt
Glyn Powditch – BJJ Coach – BJJ Black Belt
Stephen Li – Muay Thai Coach – BJJ Blue Belt

We also have an instructor candidate program starting in the next few weeks in which we will guide a number of candidates through to SBG coach status.

How did the gym/team grow in 2013?

The gym grows exponentially every year. We have 3 classes every evening Monday to Thursday, a class on Friday evening, morning time BJJ sessions, Pro Team sessions every day, and open mat and Sparring on Saturday. The only downtime is Sunday when we prepare the gym for another week of training but the cleaning session usually ends up with some rolling time with my wife.

We have changed the timetable a number of times over the last year to include new classes and develop upcoming instructors. This year I was also very proud to award BJJ black belts to two of my long time students, Glyn Powditch and Chris Coltrane, and also award Matt Inman his BJJ brown belt.

2013 fight team review

I don’t like highlighting individuals because all of the guys work extremely hard and grow each day. With this sport, a loss or bad decision doesn’t always equate to a poor performance. Not to mention some of the guys fight more frequently than others and some have been dormant for a while.

Some comments on our current fight team

Pros

Matt Inman, currently on a 3 fight win streak for Cage Warriors and looking to continue to rack up the wins. Matt is a work horse and incredibly talented, will travel anywhere in the world to fight and doesn’t complain, even if the fight is cancelled.

Alex Minogue, although he has lost his last two bouts, his performances have been the best of his career and I am incredibly proud of him.

Aaron Wilkinson had an impressive win over Bola Omoyele even though he went in to the fight as the underdog. He is now on the Bellator roster so expect big things from him this year.

Jordan Desborough made his Cage Warriors debut in september, winning his fight via TKO in the second round. The night’s event was also holding a four man bantamweight tournament to decide the CWFC world champion. Initially Jordan was listed as second alternate in tournament in the event of injury; two weeks prior to the event, he was moved up to first alternate.

Jordan was called upon to fight for the belt in the final when Brett Johns’ original opponent was forced to pull out. Let’s just say Jordan was very happy even though on paper he was a huge underdog. Jordan ended up fighting seven rounds that night, five of those championship rounds, only to lose the final to a split decision. Jordan had a bit of an upset in his last outing at Cage Warriors 62 but these are the fights you learn from.

David Graham signed to Cage Warriors and we hope to see him fight this year.

Amateurs

Josh Jarvis, Jordan Desborough’s older brother, successfully defended his FCC Flyweight title

Jim Ratcliffe won two fights by first round KO within four weeks of each other.

Emmanuel Akpan demonstrated devastating stand up technique winning two bouts by KO on FCC shows.

Paul Douglas showed awesome boxing technique and dominating ground control winning all of is bouts in 2013 and we can expect the same in 2014. Paul runs his own roofing business so unfortunately cannot train full time but still manages to put on very impressive performances and usually brings a huge fan base with him.

And then there were notable first round stoppages for debutants Carl Prince, Jav Mirza, Orelando Flemming and Joel Finnan.

What were the top performances and finishes of the year?

Matt Inman’s heel hook finish of Mohsen Bahari at Cage Warriors 57 was particularly bittersweet as most people think Matt only has good stand up, but he is also a high level BJJ practitioner. Jim Ratcliffe showed sharp stand up with two first round KO’s within a month of one another. Aaron ‘The Heartbreaker” Wilkinson winning fights with body and mind.

Who was the fight team MVP of 2013? And rookie of the year?

Again, I don’t like naming individuals, especially when we have such a huge talent pool at SBG Mainline Manchester. However, three rookies that stand out this year were Joel Finnan, Jav Mirza and Orelando Flemming who all won their amateur MMA debuts in true SBG fashion, all with first round stoppages. Also, Emmanuel Akpan continues to impress with his devastating striking ability, as does Paul Douglas with superior striking.

Were there any fighters who you feel didn’t have the year they should have?

I am proud of all the gyms fighters win, lose or draw. I was disappointed with a few dodgy decisions this year and a few of the losses some of the guys had but that’s the nature of the fight game. I know all the guys are big enough and professional enough to suck it up and move on.

What where the high and low moments of 2013?

Seeing Casey Jones, my first black belt and one of the best BJJ coaches I’ve seen, move away is definitely a low point. That said, seeing him getting married and moving abroad is the upside. Fight-wise, no low points. We are not going to ponder or make excuses. It is what it is.

Any memorable stories at the gym, an event or fight team trip in 2013?

Awarding Chris Coltrane and Glyn Powditch their black belts was a very emotional and rewarding experience for me. Having my coach Matt Thornton there and having him notice the fact that although Chris rolled with fresh opponents for just under two hours he wasn’t submitted. Amazing.

There is something sad, funny and inspiring every day at SBG Mainline, especially with Alex Minogue around.

I had two particularly memorable fight trips this year, both with Matt Inman for Cage Warriors. The first was our trip to Grozny, Chechnya for Cage Warriors 58 and the second was our trip to Jordan for Cage Warriors 61.

Who is the gym joker?

Alex Minogue is without doubt the biggest joker in the gym; he has the attention span of a 5 year old. I have to bollock him constantly but he helps keep morale high and I love him dearly. As much as he winds me up, he knows when to knuckle down and put in the hard work. His game has increased considerably over the last 12 months and his last two fights have been outstanding; his best performances to date by far and he continues to evolve.

Any new fighters/rookies to look out for in 2014?

Saul Rogers has joined the Pro Team. It’s great to have him on board. He’s a great athlete with a good work ethic and willing to learn. I believe he can go all the way.

Dave Graham, although not a new fighter, hasn’t fought for a while; he is now signed to Cage Warriors so we hope to see him show off his skills this year. We also look forward to seeing David Johnson back in the cage after a long lay off.

As for the amateur guys, tons of them but I’m not going to big anyone up because firstly I have to get them fights, and secondly I don’t want them to turn into Facebook MMA Cage Fighters spouting off all the time before they have actually done anything.

What are your goals for the gym in 2014?

As I mentioned earlier the gym membership has grown exponentially over the last couple of years so bigger premises is definitely one of this year’s goals.

As for coaches, you cannot get better coaches than SBG coaches; they wouldn’t be coaching for me if they weren’t at the top of their game. However, we do hope to bring through more coaches to assist with the addition of new classes and the influx of new members. I would just like to add that without the help of Matt Inman, Jon Bond and Aaron Wilkinson at fight shows all over the country this year would have been a lot more difficult.

Thanks to Toxic Fightwear for fitting out a lot of the guys this year and fightstoremma for hooking me up. Thanks to Simon Kenny, my right hand man for just getting on with the job and keeping it real, Ella Tanswell for making it all possible and keeping me sane, and each and every member of SBG Manchester and SBG Worldwide because its all about the community.
