How to rename the full name of the files by replacing '/' (slash) with '_' (underscore) using zmv in zsh

$ zmv '(**/)(*.txt)' '${1//\//_}${2}'

The first pattern (**/) ensure that you go inside all subdirectories recursively,
the second pattern (*.txt) restricts this operation to only those files ending with ".txt".

${1//\//_} ensure that you replace every '/' in the first pattern to '_' .

What happened to the News?

I remember the days when I was a little boy. The only channel that we could watch was Doordarshan. I was not watching much TV anyway. I still remember getting annoyed when my mom and dad used to tell us to keep quiet during 8:30 News. Later the news were telecast in English again. But we used to watch the Hindi version.

Some years down the line, other channels entered in the scene of Indian television. The first one that I came to know of was Zee TV. Since we did not have cable connection, I sometimes used to go to my neighbours house watch programs like Antakshari etc.

We finally opted for cable-connection and in turn other TV channels when I finished my 12th. It was Doordarshan who kept us company till then. Since after 12th I left my home for further education I did not have any particular favourite TV channel. But I must admit that it has been years since I have stumbled upon Doordarshan and watched.

But now whenever I stumble across a News Channel I remember the good old days. I still remember the typical tune for the news followed by a Saree clad announcer with heavy make-up. There might have been cases of censorship on the news as Doordarshan was controled by Ministry of information and broadcast but at least whatever was reported, was reported with a complete neutral expression on the face of the news presenter.

"The president addressed the nation today..."

"India lost in the cricket tri-series...."

....and the list goes on. That's it. "This happened" and nothing more. That's what I like my news channel to serve me news. Today what is being fed as news is not news but political advertisements, political opinions mixed with presenter's own bias with extra gossip on top. In addition, we are also served special additions of jumping to conclusions without any facts, blame-game, selective reporting. If that is not enough, they also serve us "Romance brewing in BigBoss house" as a breaking News. I wonder how everything from cat getting stuck on a tree to pre-planned dharna of some group of people is a "breaking news".

In my personal opinion, since there are 24 hrs in a day and there are so many 24hr news channels. Not much newsworthy is happening to keep every channel occupied with reporting something sensible. So they are reporting any random events as news and do their post-mortem in the most ridiculous manner possible. And then there is another problem. With 24hr channel, how do you make audience to stick to your channel for 24 hours? Because without enough audience it is difficult to generate revenue. So what do you do? You present what the audience wants to see and not what the people need to see. You feed your audience with what can be described as voyeurism, titillating stories and pretty much anything that tingles their sensation. (That's how the term "sensational news" comes into picture I believe.) From Lalu Yadav's outburst to Rakhi Sawant's blabber, you want to feed everything to the people because that's what tickles our perverted senses and tries to make us feel that we are "up-to-date" on what is happening in the country and that "we care" for our nation by watching these news so that we can take "informed decision" as an electorate.

In among all these WTFs, we do not realize that we are just a source of revenue generation and what we are see is not news but political opinions, alliance and allegiance being thrust down our throats. Please see the following video

તું શાને 'આજ' ના રૂપે મળી સોગાત જાવા દે ?

કરેલી ભૂલ નો કરવો જ હો તો કર તું પશ્ચાતાપ

થયેલી ભૂલ કેરો તું હવે સંતાપ જાવા દે

કૈંક ભીના સ્વપ્ન સ્મરણો માં છે સંકોર્યા

હૃદય માં સાચવેલા એક જણ ની વાત જાવા દે

જવાનીના ગુલાબી દિવસોને યાદ કરજે તું

Not just another day....

"Wake up! Wake up, Arun!!" Suhani was trying to wake me up. I could barely open up my eyes. I looked at the alarm clock on the side table, it was showing 9'o clock.

"What is it? Why are you waking me up so early? You know I spent almost the whole night in the lab yesterday.'

"Yes, but it is Monday. Don't you have to go to that seminar you were eagerly awaiting? Something about we all living in a matrix?"

Oh, yeah! I was waiting for weeks to attend that seminar. How can I miss that being delivered by Prof. Nick Bostrom himself! "Wake up, Dr Arun Anand!", I told myself.

"Well, it is a bit different than the matrix, you see, in matrix the machines were harvesting humans for energy while imprisoning their mind inside a..." I tried to clarify the difference as I was interrupted by Suhani.

"Yeah yeah yeah! It's all the same to me anyway. Now, get dressed up and get going."

I hurried through my morning routine as I really wouldn't want to miss this chance for the world. The seminar was at 10'o clock. One of the perks in being a researcher at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is that you get a quarter just across the road to your office. It would be a nightmare to beat the traffic in south Mumbai otherwise.

I reached the lecture theatre at 9:55. The entire hall was jam-packed. I wasn't surprised. I was preparing myself to stand in a corner throughout the lecture. I was looking out for a nice corner and... "Here, here Sir! This way. I saved you a seat.", I saw Raj waving at me. Well, yet another perks of being a faculty member is the respect that you get from students. Raj, my doctoral student saved me a seat. He knew how excited I was to be here today. I was blabbering about this on and on since almost two weeks. It was not the case that the seminar had much to do about our research. I was rather interested in quantum physics and so was Raj. I think Raj came here just because of me. I remembered how I used to go to every talk suggested by my supervisor...

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" My chain of thoughts was broken by Prof Iyer, the Director in-charge of TIFR.

"It is an honour to welcome Prof Nick Bostrom! Prof Nick Bostrom is a faculty member at the Phillosophy and Oxford Martin School. He is also the Director of the Future of Humanity Institute as well as Programme on the impacts of future technology at the University of Oxford. He will be speaking about his seminal paper on Are you living in a computer simulation?. Without further ado, I request Prof Bostrom to take the stage".

"Friends, I have been invited to talk about ...." Prof Bostrom directly came to the point. The talk was having a mesmerizing effect on me.

"....So, I argue that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed. ...."

He proceeded towards the mathematical formulation of his hypothesis. He finished his talk in about 45 minutes. "Amazing timing!", I admired him in my mind. The floor was made open to questions. Lots of hands were raised. Questions varied from the computational models of the simulation to the parameters he picked for his equations.

"Is there a way to know if we are living in such a simulation?" A PhD student standing in a corner asked. "Damn! That's a really good question. Why didn't it occur to me?" I was cursing myself.

"That's an excellent question!" lauded Prof Bostrom.

"If you are inside a simulation, it is very hard to realize the existence of an entity outside the world (the simulation) that we perceive. However, let's assume that their model of computation is just an extrapolation of the model that we have today. That means, if it is a piece of software there might be bugs. Some bugs causes the software to crash, that means, we all cease to exist at once. So no-one would be there to observe such a phenomenon. But there are other kinds of bugs! Imagine that we all are variables in this computer program. Now, when we observe some interesting phenomenon in some of our experiments, we usually run it once again. We may change a few parameters here and there, just to see how these changes affect the phenomenon in question. In this repeat run, what if we forget to reset a variable? This variable, or in our world, this person would have the memory of the earlier experiment as well and thus can witness an anomaly. Something like a dejavu...."

Wow! Wild imaginations were taking over my mind and suddenly they came to a stop as the sound of a huge applaud reached my ears. I was still mesmerized though.

I went back to my home for lunch and then took an afternoon nap to compensate for the sleepless night I had earlier. I went back to the lab in the evening and I saw Raj already there. We were in the middle of an important experiment so we were going at it night after night. It seems there is a deep bond between researchers and nights. We were a bit tired so we went for a walk at the private beach of TIFR. The brightest idea often comes when you are taking a walk. Also, the moon light, the sound of the ocean and the cool breeze really act as catalysts to giving a fresh perspective.

Finally, I called it a day at 5:30 in the morning. I walked back home, gave Suhani a light kiss on her forehead and went to sleep.

"Wake up! Wake up, Arun!!" Suhani was trying to wake me up. I could barely open up my eyes. I looked at the alarm clock on the side table, it was showing 9'o clock.

ઘણા દિવસે ઉપાડી લેખિની હાથે ભલા માણસ
અમે તરસ્યા હતાં, લાગી ગઝલ અમૃત ભલા માણસ

બચપણ

બચપણ ની યાદો ને તાજી કરી લઉં
ફરી થોડી મસ્તી હું પાછી કરી લઉં

ગારાના લાડુ ને સુકવી ફરી થી
ગોલંદાજી ની હું લડાઈ લડી લઉં

ટૂંકી પહેરી ચડ્ડી ને ધાબે ચડી ને
પ્રથમ વર્ષા ને આજ બાથે ભીડી લઉં

રમું ધૂળ માં મેલ થી બેફીકર થઇ
બનું રાજા માટી નો કિલ્લો કરી લઉં

થયા હાથ ગંદા જે ધૂળમાં રમીને
છુપાઈ ને ચડ્ડી ની પાછળ લુછી લઉં

છુપાયા જે ભેરુ ગણતરી ના વાંકે
હવે ગોતી કાઢી ને 'થપ્પો' કરી દઉં

ડરાવે જો ભઈલો તો ધમકાવું એને
રખે તારી મમ્મી ને ચાડી કરી દઉં

પડે દુખ જો થોડું ફરી ખુલ્લા દિલથી
થઇ બેફીકર પોક મૂકી રડી લઉં

મમ્મી ની સાડી ના પાલવ થી મારી
ભીની આંખો પાછી હું છાની કરી લઉં

મમ્મી ના ખોળા માં માથું મૂકી ને
'સભુ' નાનો થઇ ને હું આંખો મીંચી દઉં

જો કે અમુક જગ્યા એ 'લ' ને બદલે 'ગા' ની છૂટ લીધી છે .

કદી કોક પત્થર ની ધારે રહી જો
અને મોતના તું કિનારે રહી જો

ખુદાઈ મળે ખૂબ સસ્તી અહીં તો
તું ઈન્સાનિયત ની બજારે રહી જો

ઝલક જોવી હો કો ખુદાની જો તારે
ઘડી કોક ભૂલકાં ની હારે રહી જો

નિશાના રુદન ને જો સાંભળવું તારે
કિરણની તું પાંખે સવારે રહી જો

સખાવત ઉપર તારી શ્રદ્ધાય ડગશે
કદી કો સખા ની કટારે રહી જો

વખાણીશ પ્રાણી ની સંગત અહી તું
કદી કો મનખ ના પનારે રહી જો

બધા લાગશે જીવજંતુ સરીખા
તું વૈરાગ ના કો મિનારે રહી જો

નિયંત્રણ ના યત્નો ને છોડી પછી તું
અહીં નાખુદા ના સહારે રહી જો

(નાખુદા - આગેવાન, નાવડી નો કપ્તાન. અહીં ઈશ્વર માટે રૂપક અપાયું છે .)

અહીં મેં પ્રેમ થી આગળ જવાની નેમ રાખી છે
હવે તો ભક્તિ થી અર્પણ થવાની નેમ રાખી છે

નફા ને ખોટના સાકી નથી કરવા ગણિત મારે
અહીં તો શૂન્ય ની પાસે જવાની નેમ રાખી છે

ભરી છે એટલી કે આ જગે ખારાશ મારામાં
જગત કલ્યાણમાં સાગર થવાની નેમ રાખી છે

નથી સૂરજ થવું મારે કે એ અઘરું ઘણું લાગે
અહીં દીપક ની જ્યોતિ મેં થવાની નેમ રાખી છે

હવે તો ચંદ્રમાં પાસે ઘણો છે હાથવેંતે છે
અમે બ્રહ્માંડ ની પે' પા' જવાની નેમ રાખી છે

બળ્યું શું દેહમાં પામર હવે એવું વિચારી ને
ભળે 'ખુશ્બૂ' અને 'સૌરભ' થવાની નેમ રાખી છે

Well,
I am in UK right now and I am going to be here for quite some time. One thing annoying about being in UK is UK keyboard. Especially once you have a habit of using a US keyboard. Thankfully, I have brought my ergonomic US keyboard with me over here. But then the trouble is what do you do if you want to type £ ? If you are a linux person like me, this is what you should do.

Create a file named .Xmodmap in your $HOME.
Put the followings in the file

add mod3 = Mode_switch
keysym Alt_R = Mode_switch
keycode 26 = E NoSymbol EuroSign cent
keycode 46 = L NoSymbol sterling cent

keycode 27 = R NoSymbol U20b9 NoSymbol

What it does is that it assigns ALT_R (Right Alt)+e to €, ALT_R+SHIFT+e to ¢, ALT_R+l to £, ALT_R+SHIFT+l to ¢ and ALT_R+r to ₹. For more details refer to 'man xmodmap'.

Now, either you logout and log back in or run

xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

and Voila!! You have pound sterling , euro, cent sign and Indian rupee symbols available at your finger tips!! Literally!!

हम कुछ और नहीं,
हैं शतरंज के कुछ मोहरे

कभी चलते चाल सीधी,
कभी टेढ़ी ही चाल चलते,
हम कुछ और नहीं,
हैं शतरंज के कुछ मोहरे

कभी रोक देती हमें कोई रूकावट,
कभी फांद कर उसे आगे बढ़ते,
आ जाते कभी आमने सामने,
करते कुर्बान किसी को फायदे के लिए,
हो जाते हम कभी फ़ना किसी के लिए,
बढ़ जाते अकेले आगे कभी,
हम तरक्की की चाह में,
कभी मुकाबला करते आंधीयों का,
एक दिवार बन के,
हैं कुछ काले कुछ उजले हमारे चेहरे
हम कुछ और नहीं,

રહી ગઈ કહેવાની તુજને જે હૃદય ની વાત ખાસ,
તે ગઝલ ને કાવ્ય માં આજે રહે છે મારી પાસ,

જોયો અમીરી ને ગરીબી માં ફરક મેં એટલો,
કોકને ત્યાં છે દિવાળી, કોક ને માટે અમાસ

લઇ ગયું છે કોણ ચોરી મારા દિલ ના ચેન ને,
તારી આંખો પર છે શક, કાજી જરા કરજો તપાસ,

ઝાંઝવાઓ આમ ના તડપાવો મારી પ્યાસને,
આખા રણ ને એક ઘૂંટડે પી જવાની એ જ પ્યાસ

મારાપણામાં હું જ ખોવાઈ ગયો છું આજ તો,
શોધી આપે કોઈ મુજને, છે મને મારી તલાશ

ઉગતા સુરજ ને નમવા છે અહી તૈયાર સહુ,
છાયા પણ ભટકે ન પાસે, જેની ચાલે છે અમાસ

"સૌરભ" કરો ના ગમ તમે ડૂબી જવાનો આટલો,
તારશે નક્કી જ તારણહાર કાંઠે મારી લાશ

કેવો હતો અસલ હું, કેવો થઇ ગયો
મારી જ ખુદની જાતથી અણજાણ થઇ ગયો

મૃગજળને જોઈ જોઈ ને એવી વધી તરસ,
દરિયાને કાંઠે આવીને તરસ્યો રહી ગયો

પ્રેમમાં એવી મને લાગી હતી તલબ,
છીપાવવાને એ જ તલબ, ઝેર પી ગયો

મંઝીલને પામવાની તૃષા એટલી વધી,
પર્વત ખસી ગયો અને રસ્તો બની ગયો

ચાલ્યા ગયા મૂકી ને મને મારા આંસુઓ
દુખના જ ટાણે કેટલો તન્હા થઇ ગયો

કિસ્મત ના તારલા એ મને સાથ ના દીધો,
એથી મરી ગયો ને હું તારો થઇ ગયો

લોકોને ખુશી આપવા આ ડિલની શી જરૂર
હું ઓગળી ગયો અને 'સૌરભ' થઇ ગયો

ચાકડા પર પીંડ મૂકી આપણે તો જાત ઘડવી

છે લડાઈ આંતરિક આ મન ને કાબુ રાખવાની
ચાલ શીખી જાઉં કે આવી લડાઈ કેમ લડવી

હો ભલે નડ્યા તમોને લોક આખી જીંદગી માં,
સાવચેતી એમ રાખો કે નડે ના જાત અડવી

છો ભલે વિહ્વળ બની શોધે ખુદાને આખી દુનિયા
બે બરાબર છે ભલે જડવો ખુદા કે જાત જડવી

'સૌરભ' તમારી વાત ને છો લોક સ્વીકારે નહિ, પણ
વાત સાચી વાત છે લાગે ભલે ને વાત કડવી
