6 Ways to Collect Your Money other than Paypal

If your invoicing solution does not include a payment method you require and you need additional ways to collect your revenue, then the following sites should be considered.

Paypal at http://www.paypal.com

Like it or not, this is the 800 pound gorilla, at least for online payments collections. Every business should have a Paypal account, even if you do not plan on using it, you never know when you might. It allows anyone with a major credit card to pay you if they have a Paypal account as well. They can also make payments direct from their bank account to yours. Paypal takes a fee of each transaction; typically a 2.9% transaction fee on the total sale amount plus a $0.30 fee per transaction. There are some exceptions so check the website.

Authorize.net at http://www.authorize.net

Authorize is the second most popular small business online payment service. Many larger companies resell their service, including, Wells Fargo, Start, and Chase. They allow you to accept payments of eChecks and credit cards either online, from a retail store, or on the go from your mobile phone. There are many built-in integrations including FreshBooks, ZenCart, Magento, and more. There is a setup fee and a monthly gateway fee, but transactions tend to be flat fee and are dictated by the reseller. Authorize.net uses AVS on credit card transactions and helps prevent suspicious and potentially costly fraudulent transactions with an exclusive customizable, rules-based Advanced Fraud Detection Suite (AFDS).

WePay at https://www.wepay.com/

If you sell products or services online, then WePay is a reasonable alternative to Paypal. There are no contracts, set up fees, or monthly fees. You pay 1% + 30¢ for bank payments and 2.9% + 30¢ for credit cards. It includes free invoicing and your customers do not need to have a WePay account, which is a nice convenience for them.

Propay at http://www.propay.com/

Propay allows you to accept payments, even internationally, both online and at point of sale. You will be able to accept credit and debit cards and bank accounts. All data is encrypted during the transaction. Propay has a card swipe attachment for your iPhone so you can accept payments while on the go, and capture your customer’s electronic signature…pretty cool. Propay is also integrated with eBay checkout, so you can use it if some or all of your business is an eBay store. Fees are relatively low, but vary depending upon what services you need, so check the website.

Accounting Software Doesn't Have to be Complicated

Arguably, the most important back office application for any small business is the accounting and financial software. You need to know how much money you have in the bank, you have to be able to pay your suppliers, employees, and utility bills. You need to be able to pay your taxes quarterly and have a good idea about your monthly cash flow. If you use an accountant – highly recommended—then they will expect your financial data in some sort of organized manner.

Accounting

Here is a look at some of the top accounting and financial software used today. It should be mentioned that every product mentioned below will let you try their software – usually for 30 days—without fee.

QuickBooks by Intuit

This is the de facto industry standard; they have been around a long time and every accountant knows how to use this program. This software has two versions: desktop; and online. These two products can be integrated which provides the best of both worlds, that is, having a local desktop version which does not require an internet connection, and an online version that can be used to pay bills, send invoices, upload your tax information to your accountant, and have a backup of your financial data online. This is the only accounting product mentioned here that has this option.

The biggest downside to QuickBooks, and probably the major reason that so many competitors have been created for small business, is that it is not inherently easy to use unless you have an accounting background. There is a big industry in QuickBooks training classes, instruction manuals, and consultants that will setup your QuickBooks for your business to make it easier. If your business has a full or part-time bookkeeper or accountant, QuickBooks is probably the best option. If not, you may want to take a look at some of the other options below. The good news is that, most of the other accounting packages below will import and export to/from QuickBooks if you decide to change.

· Many add-on products available for inventory, accepting credit cards, etc.

· Relatively steep learning curve

COSTS

QuickBooks Desktop 2013 sells for about $199.

QuickBooks Online runs anywhere from $13 per month to about $70, depending on which features you need, such as payroll, inventory, or forecasting. You can get a list of features for each version at http://quickbooksonline.intuit.com/finance-accounting-solutions.

Recommendation if you are just starting out: QuickBooks Pro ($200 one time) + Online Essentials at $27 per month.

Outright at http://outright.com

If you absolutely want to keep the accounting for your small business as simple as possible, then this new service is just what you need. It is completely online so you do not need to install anything on your PC. It integrates with Amazon, eBay, Paypal, Etsy, your business credit cards, and other online services. It even has an iPhone app for mobile cash transactions and mileage tracking. This is a great choice if your business is an online store with one of these sites.

Outright also has simplified reports that show you where your money is going and how your business is doing. It will track your sales tax. It will also give you a running estimate of what you owe on your quarterly taxes, and then create nice simple reports for you or your accountant to do the filing. Here is the best part: it is free. There is an advanced version that includes sales tax and other features for just $10 per month.

· Very inexpensive

· Integrates with Amazon, eBay, Paypal and other online businesses

CONS

· Does not have all the bells and whistles of QuickBooks including Payroll, Invoicing, and inventory.

FreshBooks at http://www.freshbooks.com

If you want the features of QuickBooks, but more of the simplicity of Outright, then take a good hard look at FreshBooks. This is probably the biggest competition fo r Intuit’s QuickBooks with over 5 million customers. Like Outright, it connects to Paypal, credit cards, and other online services. All of your data is stored securely in the cloud so you can access it from anywhere. FreshBooks has apps for Apple devices including iPads and iPhones. They also have good technical support if you have any questions or need help with any aspect of the software.

As your business grows you can take advantage of the many add-ons (for extra fees) that can be integrated with FreshBooks including: time tracking; project management; invoicing; POS; and customer support, to name a few. If you have three or less clients and do not need to integrate with your bank account, FreshBooks is free. All other packages run from between $20 and $40 per month.

· Integrates with, Authorize.net, Paypal and other online businesses and tools

· None really; requires that you have an internet connection like the rest of these applications (except QuickBooks)

If cost is your biggest issue and even $20 per month is more than you want to invest right now, but you still want a simple and effective product that will get the accounting job done, Wave is the application for you. It provides accounting, invoicing, payroll and personal finance software for Free. If you have 9 employees or less than the accounting and invoicing are always free. There is a monthly fee for the payroll feature since there are transaction costs involved with the financial institutions, but at $5 per month per employee (maximum) it is relatively inexpensive, and completely optional.

How do they offer this service for free? They display advertisements while you use the online interface. Here is the quote from their website:

“Inside Wave, you'll see offers from companies like Amex, Staples, Dell, Moo and others. We call these our Business Savings. The companies offering Business Savings pay to have a presence in Wave, and that lets us provide awesome, innovative features to you for free.”

Summary of Wave:

PROS

· Very simple to setup and use

· Access your financial data from anywhere

· Includes unlimited free invoicing

· Integrates with, Paypal ; your bank and credit cards and Excel

CONS

· Less bells and whistles than some of the above applications but is more than enough for the smallest businesses. Your business may grow out of this software.

COSTS

Free ($5 per month per employee if you want Payroll features)

There are a few other popular online accounting software packages that provide similar features and pricing as the above packages. They are included here for you to research or try if none of the above options fulfill all of your needs.

If you just need to count or track parts and keep the inventory updated in either Excel or Quickbooks, the Wasp CountIt software program will download existing inventory information from QuickBooks directly to the Wasp mobile device, take inventory, and send the updated count data back to QuickBooks. It includes over 100 reports out of the box and has a customizable dashboard for decision support. Acctivate has a free trial upon request, but there are no listed prices; it is by quote only based on your business setup.

Use KickStarter to Fund your Creative Project

Kickstarter is a funding platform for artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians, journalists, inventors, explorers...

Amazon Payments processes all the pledges on Kickstarter.
Starting a project is free. Every project has a funding goal (any dollar amount) and a time limit (from 1 - 90 days) set by the project creator. When the deadline is reached, there are either of two results:

1. Funding Successful: If a project has met or surpassed its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are instantly charged and funds go directly to the project creator. Project creators are then responsible for completing the project and delivering rewards as promised. Projects continue to accept pledges until their end date regardless of their funding level.

2. Funding Unsuccessful: If a project has NOT met its funding goal, all pledges are canceled. That's it.

Rewards inspire support and can be as simple as a download for $5 or as elaborate as a hot-air balloon ride. It's up to the project creator to create, price, and fulfill their rewards. Rewards can be priced anywhere from $1 to $10,000. Project creators are wholly responsible for their promises.

If a project is successfully funded, Kickstarter will apply a 5% fee to the funds raised. If funding isn't successful, there are no charges. Amazon also charges a processing fee when funding occurs. All projects must comply with the Amazon Payments Acceptable Use Policy. A project creator has the option to cancel funding. When funding is canceled, all pledges are immediately voided. Credit card rules forbid project creators from paying themselves. Any pledges made by a project creator to themselves may cause Amazon to cancel a project creator’s Amazon account, making it impossible to receive or remove funds.

Use the project page to update funders and link to social sites like Facebook.

This is great if you are starting a new business, or have a business and want to add a website/blog/social network for a new product that you are branding.

If nothing else, it is a great way to see all of the myriad social sites that are popular in a given category!

2008 Hot (or Not) List

Entrepreneur Magazine had an article last year 2008 Hot List: Best Business Ideas & Trends.

I always like to look back and see how accurate their predictions were.
Here were some of the key markets and ideas proposed --

There are more online in the article but I am interested in which you think were true and which were dead wrong. For example, while there is always an upscale market for most items, the state of the economy prevented any major breakouts for #3 or #9. I think #4 and #5 are no-brainers based on demographics alone. I have definitelt seen a boon in (#8) green business services including whole consulting groups starting up to offer these services. I also believe that #2 is going to be big very soon as I personally have noticed more and more Americans having special foods needs relating to gluten, allergen (e.g. peanuts), and other sensitivities.

PsTools by Mark Russinovich includes some handy command line utilities for Windows O/S. They are especially welcome if you are familiar with Linux. They could easily be incorporated into a remote management and monitoring script for applications such as Zenoss, etc.

The tools included in the PsTools suite, which are downloadable as a package, are:

PsExec - execute processes remotely
PsFile - shows files opened remotely
PsGetSid - display the SID of a computer or a user
PsInfo - list information about a system including how long it has been up
PsKill - kill processes by name or process ID
PsList - list detailed information about processes
PsLoggedOn - see who's logged on locally and via resource sharing (full source is included)
PsLogList - dump event log records
PsPasswd - changes account passwords
PsService - view and control services
PsShutdown - shuts down and optionally reboots a computer
PsSuspend - suspends processes

The PsTools download package includes an HTML help file with complete usage information for all the tools.

Note: some anti-virus scanners report that one or more of the tools are infected with a "remote admin" virus. None of the PsTools contain viruses, but they have been used by viruses, which is why they trigger virus notifications.

A great new free time tracking and GANTT app

ClockingIT is a great new free project management and time tracking application. It is hosted online but if you want the open source code (MIT/X) you can get that too.
This application is simple to use, elegant to look at, and gets the job done.

There is an interactive GANTT chart which updates in real-time as you change task estimates and due dates.
There is also a task list view which can be sort and filtered. Files related to the project can be stored in shared space. There is a timesheet report that can be exported as CSV.

You can get custom reports and analyze traffic flow behavior - Flow Analytics™ is an add on module to Scrutinizer. It provides helpful overview information and monitors for internal threats.
