Production Pool Changes for Spring 2014

Production Students:

Changes are afoot -- most notably, that the Production Pool has been dismantled. This means the schedule numbers for most advanced production and screenwriting classes will not be suppressed. Eligible students will be able to enroll in these classes during priority registration. Please note that all bulletin prerequisites still apply and will be enforced.

There are still a few classes that require an application, portfolio review, and acceptance, specifically:

Relationship to Other Courses: This course is designed to build on skills acquired in CINE 310 and to prepare students for independent filmmaking. It can be seen as a companion to Cinematography for live action filmmakers and is appropriate for animation and multimedia production. Highly recommended for students who plan to enroll in CINE 520, Post Production Sound.

Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage facility. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production within such a facility.

Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage outside of the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready for sound work (approx 5 mins -- can be section of a longer work. It can be your own project or another student’s). Picture editing MUST BE COMPLETED by the start of the semester. You should also have access to the separate elements of any existing sound you want to preserve or improve.

Course Description: Preparation and editing of multiple sound tracks. Recording and mixing of sound tracks for picture using file-based technologies.

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.

Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.

Course Description: The lectures, screenings, readings, and technical instruction for the course are designed to foster creativity in the production of motion picture images. We will maintain an ongoing discussion of the concepts and ideas in each project as we work with experimental film production techniques. Our practice will begin with a focus on optical printing and move on to incorporate additional hands-on techniques such as hand processing and physical manipulation of the film. We will make individual and/or 2-person film projects as well as work in some large group activities.

The Advanced Production Pool is a group of Cinema students eligible to apply to advanced production classes (scroll down for a list of classes). The Pool consists of qualified undergraduates, graduates, and foreign exchange students pursuing a degree in Cinema.

Applying to advanced production classes involves two steps. Please read carefully below.

I. STEP ONE: JOIN THE POOL
In order to apply to advanced production courses, students must first join the Advanced Production Pool. Applications to join are normally due in October for spring semester and March for fall semester. Deadlines are posted on this blog. Once a student has joined the Pool, this step does not need to be repeated.

Students may apply to join the Pool while they are taking the prerequisite course (CINE 310/316 for undergraduate; CINE 710 for MFA). Exchange students planning their study abroad should apply during the semester prior to their time at SFSU. Contact Scott Boswell for more details: sboswell@sfsu.edu

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for undergraduate students:
•Declared Cinema major
•Completion of CINE 310/316 with a “C” or higher
•Completion of two of the three Foundation Courses (CINE 311/211: Film History I*, CINE 312/212: Film History II*, or CINE 340: Critical Studies) with a “C” or higher
•Note: You must enroll in any remaining Foundation Course(s) concurrently with Advanced Production Courses.*Animation emphasis students may substitute CINE 365 for either CINE 311 or CINE 312.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for graduate students:
•MFA: Completed CINE 710 with a "C" or higher
•MA: Consent of instructor
•Note: Graduate students have separate production electives which should be taken into consideration when planning a course load (CINE 755: Feature Screenwriting; CINE 761: Directing for Cinema; CINE 762: Advanced Cinematography; CINE 763: Cinema Laboratory & Editing)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for foreign exchange students:
•Cinema / Film / Media emphasis
•Established background in film or video production

A student who has been accepted into the Pool must apply (or re-apply) to any advanced production classes of interest every semester. Individual course applications are due normally in November and April for the following semester. Deadlines are posted on this blog. Note: The application process is paperless -- all applications are submitted online via links on this blog.

Typically a student will be accepted into one or two courses per semester. However, if you only apply to the most popular classes (such as directing and cinematography classes), you may not be offered any classes. Graduating seniors normally get priority in competitive classes.

Your course applications must be accompanied by a Choice Form. On this form, you rank the classes you've applied to in your order of preference (1st choice, 2nd choice, and so on). If you do not submit a Choice Form, your course applications will not be considered.

All application links will be posted on this blog.

Final class lists are posted publicly on the bulletin board outside Fine Arts 422. It is your responsibility to check the lists and follow up on any pre-conditions stated on the class lists.

Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage facility. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production within such a facility.
Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage beyond the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.

Course Description: Preparation and editing of multiple sound tracks. Recording and mixing of sound tracks for picture using file-based technologies.

Requirement: To be admitted to this class, you must have a short film or video project ready to be edited (it can be your own project or another student’s). Principle photography should be completed by the start of the semester.
Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.

Course Description: While this class will still be primarily a lecture class, the curriculum is designed to give students an understanding of digital sound in terms of production, post-production, and mixing. Course Description: An intensive one-day workshop covering safety issues, set-up, production, and wrap-up in the SFSU Sound Stage. Hands-on experience with grip (electrical equipment), battens, and counter weights. Step-by-step procedures in the proper use of film production in the Sound Stage. Note: Student must manage a project on the Sound Stage outside of the workshop date in order to receive credit for the class.

Course Description: Course work includes exercises and assignments that explore the theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of editing. Although this is not primarily a Final Cut class, we will be using Final Cut Pro software. Familiarity with Mac OS X is required. A Firewire external drive will be necessary. In addition to reading, lecture, screenings, and demos, the focus of the class will be the editing of individual projects. Original projects other than CINE 310 material are particularly encouraged.

Course Description: The lectures, screenings, readings, and technical instruction for the course are designed to foster creativity in the production of motion picture images. We will maintain an ongoing discussion of the concepts and ideas in each project as we work with experimental film production techniques. Advanced Production Pool General Information

The Advanced Production Pool is a group of Cinema students eligible to apply to advanced production classes (scroll down for a list of classes). The Pool consists of qualified undergraduates, graduates, and foreign exchange students pursuing a degree in Cinema.

Applying to advanced production classes involves two steps. Please read carefully below.

I. STEP ONE: JOIN THE POOL
In order to apply to advanced production courses, students must first join the Advanced Production Pool. Applications to join are normally due in October for spring semester and March for fall semester. Deadlines are posted on this blog. Once a student has joined the Pool, this step does not need to be repeated.

Students may apply to join the Pool while they are taking the gateway course (CINE 310/316 for undergraduate; CINE 710 for MFA). Exchange students planning their study abroad should apply during the semester prior to their time at SFSU. Contact Scott Boswell for more details: sboswell@sfsu.edu

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for undergraduate students:
•Declared Cinema major
•Completion of CINE 310/316 with a “C” or higher
•Completion of two of the three Foundation Courses (CINE 311, CINE 312, or CINE 340) with a “C” or higher
•Note: You must enroll in any remaining Foundation Course(s) concurrently with Advanced Production Courses.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for graduate students:
•MFA: Completed CINE 710 with a "C" or higher
•MA: Consent of instructor
•Note: Graduate students have separate production electives which should be taken into consideration when planning a course load (CINE 755: Feature Screenwriting; CINE 761: Directing for Cinema; CINE 762: Advanced Cinematography; CINE 763: Cinema Laboratory & Editing)

II. STEP TWO: APPLY TO CLASSES

A student who has been accepted into the Pool must apply (or re-apply) to any advanced production classes of interest every semester. Individual course applications are due normally in November and April for the following semester. Deadlines are posted on this blog. Note: The application process is paperless -- all applications are submitted online via links on this blog.

Typically a student will be accepted into one or two courses per semester. However, if you only apply to the most popular classes (such as directing and cinematography classes), you may not be offered any classes. Graduating seniors normally get priority in competitive classes.

Your course applications must be accompanied by a Choice Form. On this form, you rank the classes you've applied to in your order of preference (1st choice, 2nd choice, and so on). If you do not submit a Choice Form, your course applications will not be considered.

All application links will be posted on this blog.

Final class lists are posted publicly on the bulletin board outside Fine Arts 422. It is your responsibility to check the lists and follow up on any pre-conditions stated on the class lists.

FOCUS: For 2011-2012, CINE/HED 527 is being offered only as a 2-semester class with a special focus on youth sexuality and reproductive justice. Each student team will research and create a 15-minute documentary that explores the relationship between sexuality, pregnancy, family expectations, peer norms, and educational outcomes from a variety of perspectives.

CINE 620-01: ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION I

Course Description: This intensive sequence enables students to write, direct, and edit a sync-sound thesis film project shot on 16mm film or high definition (HD) video, edited in Final Cut Pro, and mastered on DVD.
