Tourdates Unsigned Chart - It's All Happening At No.2

Scaramoose are extremely pleased to be returning to another great show this month at the Bedford, London. The band will be performing alongside three other fantastic artists including the laid-back Lisbee Stainton and acoustic / country singer-songwriter - Eliott Frisby. For those outside of London, the show will also feature online via the Bedford's live webcast from 8.30pm, Wednesday 11th February. One not to be missed.

Scaramoose Appearing On 'BBC Radio Devon' - Mon 19th

Hi Folks,

Scaramoose will be appearing on BBC Radio Devon, Monday 19th January between 6 - 7pm. The weekly show 'BBC Introducing', hosted by Kev Hutchings will feature an interview with the band, who will be discussing the progress of their new studio E.P. 'Beginnings'. Scaramoose will also be performing a live acoustic set, which will give you a small taster of what's to come on the new CD.

You can tune in to BBC Radio Devon on 103.4 - 104.3FM. Alternatively, simply tune in online here to listen live.

If you don't manage to catch the live broadcast on Monday 19th, the show will be available on the BBC website for a further week.

Hello folks,

Welcome to 2009, a year for 'Beginnings'.

After all your support during 2008, we thought we would show our appreciation and kick-start 2009 with our long awaited E.P - 'Beginnings'. Not only will the E.P feature some well known Scaramoose melodies, it will present you with some raunchy up-beat rhythms too. In between shows, Scaramoose have been working hard recording E.P demo's for you to preview. Samples can be heard on the Scaramoose Myspace or Homepage here. SCARAMOOSE & KAT MARSH JOIN FORCES

An evening in the company of acoustic trio Scaramoose together with bluesy soul singer Kat Marsh in the intimate ambient setting of the B Bar is the heart-warming prospect on offer on Thursday.

Scaramoose, formerly known as The Subterraneans, have been getting about a bit, playing their chilled sun-kissed vibes far and wide. So it will be good to see them back in the city complete with new bass player, Funky Dave, for what will be their first gig here since September. What's more they'll be showcasing tracks from their new EP, due out early in the New Year.

Alongside their own project, Scaramoose – also John Gardner (guitar and vocals) and John Eschbaecher (drums) – have been acting as a session band for Ellie Williams who is signed up to Sellaband, a share system that provides funds for recording bands outside a record deal. So they've been recording at founder member of Jamiroquai Toby Smith's Angelic Union Studio in Buckinghamshire and finishing off here at Deep Blue Sound.

The trio have just secured a tour of Living Room venues which include dates in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Oxford and London. It was at one of their favourite haunts in Bristol, Mr Wolf's that they met up with Kat Marsh and decided that it would be nice link up for a joint gig back in Plymouth.

Farewell Wishes To Clive

Hi All

Regrettably for Scaramoose, light-hearted bass player and good friend Clive Wade will not be attending the next leg of the band's exciting journey. After many joyful hours of gigging, rehearsing and traveling, sadly the time has come for Mr Wade to follow a career path that he's been working extremely hard towards for the last few years. Scaramoose have had the pleasure of sharing a very fulfilling musical year with Clive and wish him all the best for the future. To give farewell hugs and kisses, you can catch Clive's last show at the Union Inn, Saltash on Friday 29th August 9pm.

Scaramoose will be in full swing with 'Funky Dave', who will be making his debut appearance with Scaramoose on Sunday 31st August at The Thunderbolt, Bristol.

GP Calls Off Two Scaramoose Shows This Week

Dear all

Scaramoose have regrettably been forced to cancel two shows this week due to a sudden rise in ill health within the band. Sadly, shows affected include;

24th – Blues Bar, Plymouth (Duo)
25th – Bishop On The Bridge, Winchester

Scaramoose will be back in business on Sunday 27th July where the band can be seen performing at the Queens Hotel, St Ives from 9pm.

Although August holds an extremely busy period for Scaramoose with gigs from London to Falmouth, plus flat out rehearsals in preparation for a UK tour in September, the duo will next appear at the Blues Bar on 20.8.08. Scaramoose will also endeavour to return to Winchester in the near future, so be sure to keep an eye on our e-mails to find out when.

It's a moody night (if I were a poet I probably call it "atmospheric") in late June when I drag two of my musician friends 80 miles away from home down to Harlyn Bay - a coastal village in North Cornwall. They've been badgered into escorting me as I embark upon my intended new career as a documentary writer and we're off to see Plymouth-based three-piece band 'Scaramoose' ("who?", my friends ask about thirteen times during the journey). I've recently seen the band play at Oceanfest and they've struck quite a chord with me (no pun intended); I love their music and style and I feel I want to write something about them.

As we roll into Harlyn Bay I get the feeling that this is going to be an awesome night. The venue is a small and rather homely local bar - The Harlyn Inn - and 100 yards down the road dedicated surfers sit feverishly hoping that the millpond they are currently drifting on will suddenly swell. The sea is a dulled turquoise and the beach has delectable off-white sands (Dulux would probably deem the colour to be "kingfisher-egg-white" or something equally pretentious). There are rolling green hills to the left and right and rocks rising in the middle distance. What a glorious location for a gig, and to start a new career; I'm seriously already in heaven and we've only just arrived.

The inside of the bar is slightly old-worldly, with features such as the item we collectively decide to name a "nautical steering wheel" above the fireplace (we can't recall the correct term). There are maybe 20 punters who are mostly glued to the TV watching the latest Euro 2008 match - little conversation passes between them as they sit seemingly absorbed in the fates of Spain and Russia (as if anyone REALLY cares). Half an hour after the advertised start of Scaramoose's set, no-one seems to have noticed that the promised music has not yet materialised. We're sat around chatting to the band about guitars, favourite musicians, and whether it might offend anyone if they starting playing. I discover that what most people don't realise is this: if you've got a host of football fans to consider you have to time your sound check and set carefully ... you don't want to potentially alienate your audience by interrupting "the beautiful game" in order to play your own not-so-beautiful game of adjusting levels and reducing feedback. The band warily decide to wait until the end of the match.

Eventually, after Spain have thundered to a highly convincing victory, the sound check gets under-way; singer John Gardner launches into an acoustic rendition of 'All Along The Watchtower' and my good vibe increases to the size of a ten-foot wave; oh yes, the swell is happening INSIDE the bar. This is my favourite song of all time! No word of a lie - check it on my Facebook profile if you don't believe me ... Five minutes of fiddling around with tuning and mixers, with some especially hard work from drummer John Eschbaecher, the guys launch into original composition 'The Alchemist', a gentle funky number with a warm-feel-good vibe. With lyrics that include references to sand and the ocean it seems a perfect track for this location. We're loving it and I'm singing along, although the rest of the audience aren't exactly warmed up yet. Probably still dreaming of penalty shoot outs. Oh well ... Song number two is 'Beneath the Sand'. From it's beautiful sitar-esque intro through it's gradual build up to a sensational slide section, this track has a certain "je-ne-sais-quois" that subtly draws you in By the time it's reaches it's climatic, powerful end, heads are starting to nod, faces are turning in the RIGHT direction (i.e. away from the damn TV screen) and attention is clearly being paid. To be honest, this band are far from in-your-face; they're laid-back and chilled-out. It's says it all that the music is so good it gets your attention before you've realised it.

What got me the first time I saw Scaramoose, and what gets me now, is the obvious sheer joy they have for playing their music. On their MySpace page the "sounds like" section reads "three guys having a great time!" and that exactly encapsulates the aura that exudes from them. Those little moments when I catch John and John smile at each other are quality. These smiles say "yeah, this is great" and get me smiling and feeling pretty fine too. It's magic. Or perhaps a more appropriate term would be alchemy; to refer back to their opening track this evening, the band certainly create chemistry with their music.

A few songs in comes a cover of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac classic 'Oh Well'. What makes everyone laugh is that the local "Harlyn Bay-ers" are so unfamiliar with this song that they clap and cheer half-way through and don't realise when the song is actually over lol. Well, that's what you get when you're introducing quality music to the masses (or to a dozen or so Cornishmen anyway). It doesn't matter though; the band are clearly loving what they're doing and the (somewhat exaggeratedly named) "crowd" seem pretty happy, as proved when - after a fuller version of Watchtower - a break is taken and one of my friends interrogates various audience members as to their response. There's a lot of complaining to be honest, but it's about the commercialised nature of much modern music and THEN there's a lot of appreciation for the quality live music the locals are being treated to tonight. The words "amazing" and "awesome" are used repeatedly alongside the comment that Scaramoose "beat the lot" in comparison to other bands that have played the Harlyn Inn. What is more, my friends seem to have become the band's new groupies, whooping and cheering wildly. I feel slightly smug when I say I knew I'd seen something special in Scaramoose.

The second half continues to "rock" and, as the set nears the end, the band's performance of home-spun funky track 'Message' draws me. This number is an exercise in how to write and play the most funky slide guitar music, and the lyrics show that Scaramoose have something significant to say beyond just their sound: "Got soldiers fighting and dying under a flag for you / When you gonna tell them what to do?". 'Message' is more than just a song title though; it also sends a message to the listener - that this band have talent.

Another thing that strikes me about Scaramoose is how balanced they are in the sense that you notice every member equally. Bassist Clive Wade looks totally chilled out slapping away (I'm being technical now - get me!!) on his stool but you can't help but pay attention to him. His playing is unobtrusively powerful; a real skill and I can definitely notice the influence of such bass "masters" as The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea. You don't always notice drummers - although you'd certainly notice if they WEREN'T there - but John E consistently makes his presence felt through absolutely magnetic playing (I'm reminded somewhat of the late, great John Bonham on 'Good Times, Bad Times'). However, the enrapturing rhythm section doesn't overshadow the amazing slide guitar skills and just-"gravelly"-enough vocals of John G. They work so well together; these guys really ARE in harmony.

As the set is rounded off with Led Zeppelin's 'Bron Ayr Stomp' (another of my all time favourites - honestly, there are people out there that can verify this!), I'm beginning to wonder if the set list was written especially for me. The band have picked their songs amazingly well, showing off a range of influences and a range of skills, convincingly introducing their own work and making the covers their own. 'Bron Ayr Stomp' makes a classic ending to an awesome, if small and under-attended gig. This kind of band and this kind of music deserves to be seen and heard by a lot more people, believe me.

I sit and make my final notes whilst the band pack up and one of my companions drunkenly - and somewhat embarrassingly - drools over John's guitars (PLEASE don't do that!) and practically begs to be allowed to join the band (oh dear - flattering to them though). Instruments need to be packed away and cables need to be tidied into ... well ... whatever you call a set of tidied cables - which isn't that easy when the landlord has turned all the lights out in a blatent "please can everyone go home" move. But then, when you act as roadies for your own band, you get used to this kind of thing. What's most important is that everyone has had a really great night in a gorgeous setting; what looked like a "moody" night has become a magnificent night and my friends will certainly never ask the question "who?" about Scaramoose again. More likely they'll be out there telling everyone they know EXACTLY who these guys are. You couldn't really ask for much more and I think it'd be fair to say that, for tonight, "The Alchemist's work is done".

Scaramoose Duo Head To London, Nhants and Bournemouth

Hi Folks,

As Clive takes a well earned break for a couple of weeks, July will be bringing many more duo shows to locations such as, Northamptonshire, London and Bournemouth.

The two John's are very delighted to be entertaining the F1 British Grand Prix crew in Towcester before their big race at the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, Saturday 5th. The Thursday prior will also see Scaramoose Duo making a return visit to their old tour location, the Fox and Hounds, which will be the first return gig since their December tour 2007!

After a pleasant couple of days in Northhants, the Duo will be heading south to London’s famous ‘Earls Court Community Festival’. The duo can be seen in the foyer entrance to Earls Crt Station, kicking off some Scaramoose originals from 12 Noon on Sunday 6th July. More festival info can be found here - http://www.eccf.org.uk/

Clive will be back on the Scaramoose band wagon as from 25th July where Scaramoose can be seen heading to Winchester for a debut gig at 'Bishop on The Bridge'. The band will also be making a return visit to St Ives (Cornwall) on Sunday 27th, this being their first time back in over 9 months!

Scaramoose To Play Alongside Donovan Frankenreiter - 21st June 2008

Scaramoose have been lucky to be invited to the year’s major eco event, the Gold Coast Oceanfest, staged on the beautiful coast of Croyde.

The line up includes acts such as Donovan Frankenreiter, The Martin Harley Band, The Imperial Vipers, Ash Grunwald, Farryl Perkiss, Rob Sawyer and Mick Hart. On the main stage as part of the Sundowner Sessions, Scaramoose will entertain the crowds at 12 noon on Saturday.

In its 10th year, the Gold Coast Oceanfest is held during the summer solstice weekend and is “led by a passionate and experienced core team of talented individuals. Hugely respected and deeply ensconced on the music and beach sports calendar, the 'Oceanfest' hosts a unique format of events and takes place against the majestic backdrop of North Devon’s’ Gold Coast.” With top music, international culinary cuisine, an adrenaline zone, simulators, traders, exhibitions, demos and a hospitality suite, there is sure to be something for everyone at this quality event.

Kingsbridge is set to be another blinding event as Scaramoose have been requested by legendary South Hams Radio DJ, Rob Wheeler to perform on the Quay, main stage at 6pm. Alongside bands such as Vince Lee and the Wildcards, Mad Dog McCrea and The Tarka Groove Experiment, this year’s line up looks set to make a fantastic event. Having been running for many years, this popular festival has already seen the talents of the Scaramoose drummer, John E in previous years. Scaramoose can often be heard on Rob Wheeler’s show on South Hams Radio 100.5 – 109.3 FM between 10am and 2pm.

The band are set to play at other great South West festivals this summer including the Rock Rapid and Adventure festival based in North Devon. More info on that will follow very shortly, including our fantastic schedule for July and August.

What's This Scaramoose Duo Then? New Video Explains All

Hello there

To all who have been keeping a beady eye on Scaramoose might have noticed a couple of different set types. Our most common and popular being the full band (trio) set, the second is our fresh and exciting duo performance.

The band likes to think of the duo as a scaled down, simplified Scaramoose. With performances from front man John G and drummer John E, the boys bring you classic Scaramoose sounds in an extremely relaxed atmosphere.

If you would like a chance to see John E performing with guitar pics instead of sticks, these gigs will definitely be worthwhile checking out. Just look out for 'acoustic duo' printed on our gig sheet to see where you can catch the two John's performing next.

Day 1 - Swanage

With the van fully loaded Scaramoose headed out along the south coast, away from Devon and through the rolling hills of Dorset. Deemed by many a Devonian to be a treacherous journey with a risk of falling from worlds edge east of Honiton, the van struggled at times and was often led astray by distant satellites and the threat of tanks!

Luckily they made it, arriving just in time for dinner. Three sizeable meals gratis of the management welcomed the boys to what was set to be a great evening. Stomachs were full and spirits were raised as Scaramoose took to the evenings entertainment. The audience were a mixed bunch of listeners, dancers, talkers and shouters, but overall the sound was well received and many a flyer and E.P disappeared throughout the evening.

Day 2 - Portsmouth

After taking solace for the night in some cheap and cheerful accommodation somewhere near Southampton, the boys headed down to Portsmouth to play at The Drift Bar. With a few hours to kill before the gig Scaramoose spent their time constructively, not writing songs and practising, but making use of condemned fairground ground rides and attempting to hit France (and each other) with stones. Clive also did some good impressions of heavy artillery!

Off to The Drift bar where Scaramoose would feature as part an evening showcasing some of Portsmouth's finest. The packed venue warmed to the band from the first song and a good time was had by all. Even the two locals who earlier that evening were bouncing each others heads off curbs in the high street seemed to be happy enough. Before leaving John negotiated his way out of a parking ticket and the boys were soon off and onto Brighton for the third leg of the tour.

Day 3 - Brighton

Scaramoose awoke to a snowy day in London by the sea and they were keen to explore what the town had to offer. The obligatory stop at the guitar shop left Clive hungry to splash out on a new bass, but they didn’t have his favourite colour so it was time to leave. On for some late breakfast and an all you can eat buffet was spotted. The decision was made before words could be spoken and the boys were soon tucking in under the watchful eye of the waitress, who made it her mission in life to suss out who might be trying to con the system by ordering one buffet and sharing amongst friends. Her suspecting glare scanned the restaurant every so often just to ensure that the rules were being adhered to. Unfortunately on this occasion we didn’t get to see the result of what might occur if someone attempted to rebel. Rest assured it would have involved some form of physical violence from the lady in question. Making it out full to the brim and more importantly without any bruises, Scaramoose set off down to the seafront to see how the pier sized up with Devon’s finest (they sure know how have a good time).

Onto the evening show and the band was greeted with a small but welcoming crowd of family, friends and one Olympic coach. Yes that’s right, Chris pictured here is responsible for coaching the British Olympic trampoline team. Reckon we’re on for gold in 2012? Mmmm.

Still…. thoroughly nice bloke and best of all he insisted on keeping the band well lubricated.

Day 4 / 5 - London

Off to the big smoke and the chance to perform alongside some of the capitals offerings. First up, the Good Ship in Kilburn and an opportunity to return to the stage that Scaramoose visited back in December. This time the band were headlining alongside three indie / rock bands. The energy level was turned up through the evening as the roster of groups gave it their all to the London crowd. Scaramoose stepped on last to deliver a fine performance, thoroughly enjoying every bit.

Onto day five and Scaramoose headed to the heart of the capital to play at the Soho Revue bar. With John E back on the guitar the lads opened the evening in what was set be an excellent programme of unsigned artists, handpicked by Sam at Seb Collective. A darkened room with cool lighting set the mood for all and Scaramoose performed a variety of acoustic numbers from their repertoire. With their set out of the way the lads had the chance to catch up with old friends and enjoy the great acts that followed. Midnight came and Scaramoose were back off in the van to Northamptonshire, home pastures for John and Clive.

Day 6 - Banbury

This morning, unlike any so far greeted the band with a cooked breakfast courteous of mother, a treat more than welcome after eating cereal from plastic bowls for five days. Matched with a good walk in the fresh country air Scaramoose were ready to return to a tour favourite, The Flowing Well in Banbury. Friends, old and new gathered to support the band and a great night was had by all.

Day 7 - Bath

Into the final leg of the tour Scaramoose said their goodbyes to family and friends and set off to Bath for their debut at The Porter Cellar Bar. The venue provided the perfect stage for the trio to host their final set and the audience welcomed their sound with hands clappin’ and feet tappin’.

Cancellation Of April Shows - Sick Note 001

Dear all,

Until now Scaramoose performances have been impermeable to injury and illness, with the band playing through every cold and sore throat that mother nature could throw their way. This time however six dates in April are forcibly being cancelled as John G is off to hospital to undergo some minor surgery. The dates to be cancelled include;

Millbridge, Plymouth (17th)
Lansdowne, Dawlish (18th)
Eliot Arms, St Germans (19th)
Axminster Inn, Axminster (20th)
Amber Rooms, Exeter (24th)
Rhubarb, Plymouth (26th)
Blues Bar, Plymouth (27th)

All being well John will be back on his feet and performing again for dates in May which are set to include venues in Bath, Bristol, Southampton, Plymouth, North and East Cornwall.

Handbrakes and Mistletoe – Scaramoose Tour December 2007

With plenty of new ground and a few old haunts to cover, Scaramoose set out on 15th December for a ten day long tour in promotion of their new E.P stopping at Bristol, Newbury, Oxford, Northampton, Milton Keynes and London. This was the first tour of its kind for the band and the lads were eager to get a taste of life on the road after months of preparation.

From start to finish Scaramoose gave it their all in every performance and despite the freezing weather were gifted with warm audience support along the way. Adversity showed its face on occasion (one instance involving men in yellow jackets, blue lights and a handbrake) but overall a good time was had by all leaving the band looking forward to their next stint on the road in late March.

John, Clive and John would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who gave their support along the way and hope to see you again next time.

Scaramoose Head Out With New E.P

Dear All,

Having worked very hard in October to change the bands name and identity from The Subterraneans, now commonly known as ‘Scaramoose’, we would like to make you aware that we have a brand new EP available to purchase. To coincide with the EP launch, Scaramoose will also be hitting the road to new pastures across the UK.
The tour will be taking Scaramoose to areas such as London’s legendary Covent Garden, Oxford, Bristol, Milton Keynes, Newbury and many more fantastic towns and cities.

The E.P will feature five original tracks from Scaramoose, including a live track recently recorded at the Junction (Plymouth) 27.10.07.

Due to the band being away for the run up to Christmas, the E.P will be available to purchase on our website from 1st January. For the time being, those lucky enough to catch us on tour, the E.P will be available to purchase at gigs from there on.
