On Friday last week I met up with Melbourne producer and dj Chevy aka Victory Team, to chat about his ‘Der Klerb’ release out on Wax Waves and Bossman Records. He is known to many as one half of the Indian Summer Dj’s, but on this solo release Chevy has shown another dimension to his productions with an EP of big club sounds that come highly recommended. Edo: The Victory Team EP ‘Der Klerb’ is coming out today, on Wax Waves and Bossman Records, can I ask why you did a split release? And how you got involved with Bossman?

Chevy: I first got involved with Bossman years ago when they put out the word for wanting to hear some stuff so I sent them an EP I made when I was 18. They politely said ‘thank you but no thank you but keep us in mind’. And I just kept in contact, and when I took over wax waves we decided we wanted to do a joint release after Sam (from Bossman) really liked the release we had done for  a guy called Sam Berry, who is totally underrated – he should be touring the world, freakishly talented. So I had my Victory Team EP ready for the Bossman label and we just decided to do it as a joint label release.

Edo: Ok cool, so you spend a lot of time in clubs in Melbourne and around Australia, as a part of the Indian Summer DJ’s – do you have any plans for a Victory Team tour?

Chevy: I’ve had a bit of a think about it and seeing as der klerb is a 2 part release, I’m hoping the first one will act as a display of what I’ve done in the past year, and if that gets some traction, I’d be looking into do an Australian tour. Whether or not that is before or after the second release we’ll have to wait and see, But I love going interstate.

Edo: Yeah

Chevy: Yeah there’s nothing better!

Edo: Just on tours and Indian Summer Dj’s, you just got back from a National tour – how was that? What was your favourite club on the tour?

Chevy: (laughs) we didn’t get to go to Perth this time, but the consolation was we got to hang out with the guys that usually look after us in Perth because they were on their Pilerats launch tour, and those guys go hard in the paint!

Edo: Yeah

Chevy: You can quote me, I’ve also seen Flume quote that “they are the hardest partiers in Australia’. So that’s always fun. For me the Sydney show was a highlight, because the whole collective was there, it was a lot of fun, plus we had a greenroom, I’d never had a greenroom!

Edo: Who gets the most babes on tour, Chevy or Gabe?

Chevy: (laughs) We can’t go there…….Gabe.

Edo: The music on the EP is a diverse mix of club sounds, what kind of stuff were you listening too when you wrote this EP?

Chevy: I was living overseas at the time and my housemate was a bit of a shut in. He’d just sit inside all day just downloading all the new moombahton stuff, and I’d just listen to all these new sounds and the new EP just snowballed as a result.

Edo: Well I’m digging the release, the lead single ‘Big Up’ is fucking Rad by the way.

Chevy: Thanks

Edo: For all the nerds out there, do you have a favourite plug-in or synth you use for your productions?

Chevy: I use ableton and I mostly use the built in ableton plugs. I use Simpler and Drum Rack a lot.

Edo: I see on your twitter that you’ve seen batman twice already, and once in you went to the cinema in your slippers. Is the secret to your productions wearing slippers in the studio?

Chevy:  (laughs) Totally, comfort is the key.

There is sure a whole heap of buzz online right now for the Lunice and Hudson Mohawke project TNGHT. Since their appearance at SXSW and the streams online of new track Bugg’n, the internets have been going a little nuts in anticipation of their self titled debut EP. But something that has gone a little more under the radar is another project involving producer Lunice, where he has teamed up with fellow Canadians Prison Garde and Ango. If you’re hanging for the TNGHT release this will more than tie you over until July. I’m really enjoying this release, which also has a slew of remixes included from the likes of Shinjin Hawke and Canblaster to name a few.

Personally I’m really into ‘To Be‘  and ‘She Won’t Leave‘ which highlight the three producers creativity and  beat making talents. Ango’s vocals are also a standout, and a great addition to the EP. It’s out! The official release for The Heatwave and Serocee’s dancehall heater: Wardance. As well as the vocal and instrumental versions, the single also features three band spanking new remixes from the likes of Shakslayer & Top Billin, Mat Cant and Voltergeist.

Scattermusic is proud to announce it’s 15th official release, a heavy-hitting bashment tune better known as ‘War Dance’ by London’s: Heatwave and Serocee. You may have heard this track already, ideally outdoors, in the sun and directly in front of a very large stack but despite becoming a staple of dancehall and bashment sets worldwide, War Dance was never officially released. Now Scattermusic and The Heatwave are working together to make amends, not only by properly releasing this certified heater, but also packing the single with some brand new remixes. First up Mat Cant trades the outdoor carnival vibes of the original for a heavier, basement ready workout. Local label Bossman recently dropped an instrumental hip hop album by beatmaker Kwasi Bongo. I met Kwasi briefly in the studio once, and I have to say it is refreshing to meet someone that is so into their beatmaking craft, yet also humble about their own talents.
The release is ten tracks long, and from the intro or first line of Gansta Hum “This your first trip? well don’t worry, things hardly ever fuck up around here” , you get taken on a warped and smoked out voyage through the headspace of a very interesting artist, full of eerie sounds and pitched down vocal chops.
I’ve enjoyed this release and look forward to more from Kwasi. You can grab it at the bossman bandcamp site, as a name-your-price album.
