Thurgood Marshall is one of the giant figures in the history of American jurisprudence. As the passionate and embattled civil rights lawyer who acted as the lead attorney for the plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, KS, he helped win the U.S. Supreme Court decision to legally end racial segregation in the public schools in the United States. He was the first African American to serve as Solicitor General of the United States and became the first African American to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The movie portrays Marshall as an old man as he ruminates and relives past trials and victories and uses Marshall's mastery of language, storytelling and imitation to create a powerful presentation. He is direct without being too rude and he "tells it like it is" without prevarication. His sense of humor and equanimity counteract some of the bitterness he felt in his long journey. His legal arguments and masterful rhetorical style are at once evocative and entertaining. Using Marshall's own writings and reflections, the play explores racism and civil rights and provides an engaging tool to facilitate discussion about these issues, not only in the legal profession, but in society at large.

Despite all that, King Henry VIII beheaded Sir Thomas More in 1535 for high treason. This drama takes the audience into the last intensely intimate hour with Thomas More just before his execution in 1535 for high treason. Still wrestling with the moral dilemmas that led him to the block, he cracks jokes, makes up songs, takes jabs at his tormentors and eventually finds peace in his fate. An extraordinary one-man tour de force, the movie sparkles with wit, explores moral questions and provides keen insight into the universal human condition. The show explores conflicts between private conscience and public loyalty and ethical and moral decisions in legal practice.

Fast Track Jury Trials are here! By Administrative Order of the Supreme Court dated March 7, 2013, South Carolina litigants may now elect to try civil cases in Common Pleas through the use of Fast Track Jury Trials. These trials have a number of special characteristics involving everything from the use of Hearing Officers, to trial scheduling, witnesses, evidence, amount of time allotted for trial, rules regarding the rights of parties to appeal, offers and demands, case presentation and the trial record.

On June 7, the South Carolina Bar CLE Division is pleased to present you with a unique opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of Fast Track Jury Trials and see a Fast Track Jury Trial Demonstration. Do short, date certain trials appeal to you and your clients? Do you want to expand your career interests as a hearing officer? Should your associates be battle tested? Learning how to use the Fast Track Jury Trial system now is essential. When William O. Douglas retired from the U.S. Supreme Court in 1975, he had served longer than any other justice in its history and had helped to decide some of the most important cases in the history of the nation. Anecdote, humor and painful remembrances are used to explore some of the most explosive issues of William O. Douglas' thirty-six year tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court. Douglas wrestles with balancing what he calls the "wilderness mind" with the often-hostile adversarial conflicts created by his controversial opinions and his active public life. He addresses the issues about which he was most passionate as he reflects on Brown v. Board of Education, the "McCarthy Era" and the Vietnam War. William O. Douglas left a legacy that calls for vigilance to protect human rights and action to protect the earth's environment. The movie explores that legacy, and provokes thought about our responsibilities, not only as lawyers, but also as citizens of the world.

About the Speaker

Barron K. Henley is one of the managing partners of Affinity’s Columbus Ohio office. He is an attorney with 15 years of experience in legal technology. Together with Paul Unger, Barron founded Henley March & Unger Consulting, Inc. (now Affinity-Columbus) in 1998.

He received his B.S./B.A. (marketing and economics) and J.D. from The Ohio State University and is a member of the American, Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations, and the Worthington Estate planning Council. Mr. Henley is a member of the ABA Law practice Management Section and the Technology Committee, the Visioneer Legal Advisory Board, and the Columbus Bar Association Law 2010 Committee. He’s also a member and former Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association Law Office Automation & Technology Committee. Barron is one of the most renowned experts on Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat and HotDocs. In fact, he heads Affinity’s HotDocs document assembly and software training departments.

A frequent speaker, Barron teaches CLE classes covering practice management, document management, file management, server and personal computer issues, remote access, mobile lawyering, scanning and imaging, legal paper reduction strategies, electronics case filing, Word, Excel, Outlook, Wordperfect, HotDocs document assembly, Adobe Acrobat, malpractice avoidance, and many other topics.

A master of the courtroom stage, who possessed an uncanny understanding of human character, Clarence Darrow was arguably the greatest trial lawyer of the twentieth century. He was an adamant opponent of capital punishment and a passionate proponent of civil and human rights. Often called the "Attorney for the Damned," he fought for the underdog and took on criminal cases thought to be hopeless. Yet, while commanding respect as a trial lawyer, Darrow was often embroiled in bitter controversy for his unpopular stands on many issues and criticized for his purported unethical professional behavior. This spellbinding and realistic character portrait of Darrow portrays his deeply held beliefs and hard fought courtroom battles. Replete with humor, humanity and intense courtroom drama, the movie engages attendees in four of the great defense lawyer's most famous cases between 1910 and 1928: Loeb and Leopold, Henry Sweet, the McNamara Brothers bombing of the LA Times Building and the Scopes "Monkey Trial." Using Darrow's own thoughts and courtroom summations, the movie explores timeless social, legal and ethical issues and provides a fresh and engaging tool to facilitate discussion of ethical behavior in and out of the courtroom.
