Der Artikel setzt sich mit dem schwierigen Thema der Ressourcen-Nutzung in der Elektronik und Computer-Industrie auseinander. Elektronik wird immer noch produziert ohne den gesamten Lebenszyklus und vor allem die wertvollen Rohstoffe hinreichend zu beachten. Elektroschrott landet nach wie vor h�ufig in L�ndern der dritten Welt. Elektronikschrott ist aber auf dem Weg vom Abfall zur wertvollen Ressource.

David Hume war nicht nur ein bedeutender Philosoph der Aufkl�rung, Agnostiker, Skeptiker, Historiker, Wissenschaftstheoretiker und, nach allem was wir wissen, keineswegs ein trockener Langweiler, sondern vielmehr ein unterhaltsamer, gut gelaunter, durch und durch sympathischer Zeitgenosse. David Hume gilt vielen als Leuchtturm der Aufkl�rung und Wegweiser in ein neues Zeitalter. Viele der nachfolgenden Wissenschafter, von Kant bis Darwin bauen auf seinen Ideen auf. Liest man Hume in der heutigen Zeit kommt man oft ins Staunen wie modern sich viele seiner Ideen lesen.

Markus Niederer finished his excellent diploma thesis "Meeting Scheduling Support using Mobile Clients". In his thesis Markus discusses different strategies to do meeting scheduling and analysis drawbacks of conventional systems. Eventually he suggests new open protocols and developed a mobile client for the Android platform which participated with good success in the first Google Android challenge. Thomas Heigl finished his very interesting diploma thesis dealing with special aspects of information retrieval in the legal domain. This thesis was done in cooperation with the publisher Linde, an expert in the field. Thomas gives a good introduction into modern aspects of information retrieval and analyses the "peculiarities" of the legal domain before he suggests strategies for this particular domain.

Andreas Pieber and Jakob Spoerk wrote a thorough and very good thesis about software components and Java-based component frameworks. The authors introduce component-based software development, derive criteria to compare frameworks and eventually discuss OSGi, Spring, J2EE, SCA, and JBI on an individual basis and in connection with each other as some problems require the combination of several component frameworks.

Robert Thullner recently finished his master-thesis with the title "Implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns using Open Source Frameworks". In his thesis he is refering to the EI Patterns described by Hohpe and Woolfe. Robert analyses a set of leading OS frameworks in this domain (Mule, Apache ActiveMQ, Service Mix and Camel). He defines a set of scenarios that are implemented with various (combinations) of technologies to evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities of the specific technology or mix of technologies. Finally he categorises the frameworks and gives hints on implementation best-practices.

Angesichts der massiven Herausforderungen, der wir als Gesellschaft in Form von Energiekrise und Klimawandel (sowie anderen Problemen die auf mangelnde Nachhaltigkeit zur�ckzuf�hren sind) gegen�berstehen, habe ich mich entschlossen, eine Neuorientierung des Open Source Arbeitskreises der OCG vorzuschlagen und den Arbeitskreis um die Thematik "Nachhaltigkeit und IT" zu fokussieren. Es gibt ein neues Diplomarbeitsthema, das sich mit den M�glichkeiten auseinandersetzt, die wir als Softwareentwickler haben um Anwendungen (Server, Client) effizienter und leistungsf�higer und damit "�kologischer" zu gestalten. Softwareentwicklung hat in der Vergangenheit oft unter dem Druck schnelle L�sungen zu bieten die Effizienz ausser Acht gelassen. "Ein weiterer Server wird das Problem schon l�sen" war eine g�ngige Annahme. Dies sollte nicht der Weg der Zukunft sein, v.a. nicht im Sinne der Probleme vor der wir durch wachsenden Resourcenmangel und Klimawandel stehen. Wege Effizienz und Energieverbrauch in komplexen Anwendungen zu messen, sowie geeignete Strategien diesen zu minimieren stellen die Herausforderung dieser Arbeiten dar.

Robert finished his excellent diploma-thesis discussing a not so popular, maybe forgotten issue in software engineering and maintenance: logging. Actually a proper logging-infrastructure and strategy can contribute a lot to a stable and secure IT environment. Robert discusses modern frameworks and suggests new ways to integrate logging streams. He also suggests guidelines in developing new systems and implemented an own integration framework based on the XMPP messaging standard.

At Webist 2007 I will present a paper introducing a new Collaboration Framwork: Communication and collaboration is supported by a multitude of different (client) applications and backend systems. At the same time, new patterns of collaboration between knowledge workers arise: people want to communicate in-time, share resources, keep track of their issues and yet do not want to be unnecessarily disturbed in their concentration. We analyse several systems and approaches to support team-collaboration and finally introduce our understanding of ?instant collaboration?. In our research we support first patterns with a middleware and client-side prototype. The system is built upon proven systems for (instant) messaging, communication and repositories, and suggest a system that allows support for new work-patterns, yet integrates seamlessly into existing IT and workgroup infrastructure and company policies.

Today's business climate requires to constantly evolve IT strategies for responding to new opportunities or threats. While the fundamentals of IT like reliability, availability, security and manageability are still crucial, rapid results are mandatory for business success. These business challenges can be solved by acting with agility ? striking the proper balance between the introduction of leading-edge technology and the pragmatic application of IT. In this paper, we introduce a testing framework for business solutions dealing with complex and dynamic IT environments. Our framework enables a test-driven development and adaptation of business processes in order to implement flexible and reliable business solutions. We compare our testing framework with model-driven development approaches and show how we applied it to an event- driven process management platform called SARI (Sense And Respond Infrastructure).

Thomas Zwanzinger recently finished his diploma thesis dealing with interactive previews in document workflows. In e-Government and e-Business applications, tyically documents are part of the workflow. These documents are filled partly automatically (from databases, ERP systems, and so on), and partly by manual interaction. Thomas evaluates Workflow systems that support document workflows and implements an own system using open standards like XForms.

Im Rahmen unserer Forschungskooperation mit Senactive, wollen wir bestehende Ereignisverarbeitungssysteme (kommerziell und Open Source) evaluieren.Im Rahmen der Arbeit soll eruiert werden, was "state-of-the-art" ist, wie unsere eigenen Systeme und Konzepte hier mitspielen, und ob Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Projekten Sinn machen w�rde. Die Diplomarbeit/Praktikumsarbeit soll letztlich hinter die "Hochglanzprospekte" blicken und Performance, Usability, Flexibilit�t, Dokumentation und typische Anwendungsszenarien beleuchten. Der Vergleich sollte idealerweise auch mit Benchmarks begleitet sein, und k�nnte auch im Rahmen einer Gruppenarbeit (Praktika) erledigt werden.

Szabolcs Rozsnyai finished his excellent diploma thesis dealing with difficult issues in mining of large event-databases. These events come from business processes or other systems like ERP, Messaging Middleware, Communication systems and so on. Szabolcs thesis did not only deal with backend, storage and indexing issues, but also with a complex web-based query interface targetting end-users. With this work, he lays the foundation for future steps in more complex event mining and visualisation strategies as well as product developments in this field.
