The XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) is the world’s largest gathering on HIV. The conference is held very two years, and is a place where 25,000 participants representing all stakeholders in the global response to HIV meet to assess progress and identify future priorities.

AIDS 2010 is organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS), in partnership with government, scientific and civil society partners in Austria and international partners from civil society and the United Nations. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IAS is the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals. The conference is organized in partnership with a number of international bodies and local partners, including: the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and its co-sponsors; the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO); the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+); the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW); the World YWCA; the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities (CVC); and the East European & Central Asian Union of PLWH (ECUO).

AIDS 2010 will be held from 18 to 23 July 2010 at the Reed Messe, Wien.

AIDS 2010 will be the eighteenth in this series of international AIDS conferences. In August 2008, it was held in Mexico City, Mexico, and the previous meeting was held in Toronto, Canada in 2006. With more than 2,500 international journalists expected to attend, the conference is the single most widely covered health event in the world.

The conference’s international secretariat is hosted in Geneva, Switzerland in the IAS’ headquarters. In addition, a local conference secretariat has been established in Vienna, Austria.

To complement its existing staff in Geneva and in Vienna, AIDS 2010 is seeking a Youth Programme Assistant, starting November 2009. The position will be full-time, based at the IAS offices in Vienna for a fixed term up to August 2010.

Based in Vienna and reporting to the Youth Programme Coordinator the Programme Assistant will assist with the management and support of youth related activities at AIDS 2010.

Responsibilities include (but are not restricted to):

* Assist the programme activity department to establish and maintain internal and external partnerships necessary for the department
* Assist in preparing invitations, contracts, contact sheets, timelines, project plans, budgets, minutes and reports for the department
* Develop and maintain systems and processes to record and manage department outputs and documentation
* When requested, assist at meetings of the governing bodies, committees and subcommittees of the conferences
* Support in managing programme-related conference work, including organizing meetings, responding to telephone and email inquiries, taking minutes, booking travel arrangements, etc.
* Perform other duties as determined by the Project Manager and Youth Programme Coordinator

Skills and qualifications:

* Experience in a non-profit, preferably youth and/or community-based organization
* Excellent organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, cross-cultural and team skills
* Excellent communication skills, including writing and presenting in English
* Ability to communicate in Russian is an asset
* Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines under pressure in an intense, complex, multi-stakeholder environment
* Computer skills in various software applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
* Experience working with and supporting volunteers and committees
* Experience with International AIDS Conferences would be an asset
* Able to work a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends, increasing near and during the conference

Only candidates currently holding a valid Austrian working permit, from an EU/EFTA country, or from Austria are able to be considered for this position.

Eine Initiative der Österreichischen Bischofskonferenz aus Anlaß des europäischen Tages gegen den Menschenhandel

The Hong Kong seminar focused on identifying best practices in factory training in China with regard to strengthened worker participation. Discussion of the accumulated experience of participants pointed out that best practice training can only be attained if sufficient trust exists between involved parties. Concrete and realistic goals for the training need to be agreed. Finally, well founded decisions should be taken on a number of questions, affecting training environment and sustainability. In this context the seminar demonstrated both the potential of worker training and a number of constraints on its future development.

The question that is to be addressed now is how a next generation of best practices can be developed. We have reached the point where training has been largely accepted as part of the process of improving dialogue and participation in factory life. The challenge ahead is to further build up and integrate best practices in methodology, evaluation and exchange between all parties involved, and make them part of everyday business. Only then will a major contribution have been made to improving the working lives of millions of workers.

The process of strengthening methodologies can only keep pace with industrial and legal developments through regular exchange of experiences and transparency on results. This has implications for labour NGOs and other initiatives engaged in training. Organisations must open-up to create new opportunities for cross-fertilisation between them.

Furthermore, factory training needs to be included in verification activities of FWF and other multi-stakeholder initiatives. The challenge is to link verification with training, with the ultimate objective to enable workers to monitor their own working conditions in a setting that allows for effective workplace dialogue. We cannot gain momentum towards better workplace dialogue without companies committing to mix factory training into their business practices in China.

This requires a new discourse for doing business: engaging with suppliers which are willing to build long term relationships, and being prepared to invest in workplace dialogue wherever needed. In this respect, worker training has a vast potential to contribute to processes of improving working conditions. Like other tools for improving working conditions, however, worker training is not a magic trick that offsets the negative consequences of how business is generally done. To ensure that worker training is effective, critical reviewing of sourcing policies remains a necessity.

Matthias Schickhofer hat als Kommunikations- bzw. Kampagnenleiter bei Greenpeace CEE und als Berater von Greenpeace International strategische und praktische Anwender-Erfahrungen mit E-Campaigning und den Angeboten im Web 2.0 gesammelt.

Er ist seit 2 Jahren als selbständiger Kampagnen- und PR-Berater tätig und berät NGO’s in Europa unter anderem dabei, wie sie Online-Campaigning strategisch und praktisch einsetzen können, um die Erreichung von Kampagnen- bzw.Organisations-Zielen zu optimieren.

oft sagt man, dass weblogs was sind wie tagebücher…könnten auch sowas sein wie ein email an eine gruppe unbekannter userInnen, wobei weblogs sehr zielgerichtet bestimmte gruppen erreichen können. wenn ich die richtigen begriffe verwende beim schreiben eines weblogs, werde ich gefunden. ich schreibe strategisch begriffe in den text rein, formuliere so, dass ein bestimmter begriff vorkommt. weblogs sind gespräche, können zumindest dazu werden, darf man aber anfangs nicht zuviel erwarten, kommt darauf an, ob man eine bestimmte community aufgebaut hat. je schlichtere info steht, umso weniger wird man kommentare bekommen, je positionierter man is, umso mehr. Vernetzung:

Beiträge sind chronologisch geordnet, jedes Blog hat auch statische Seiten zB. jene zur Hintergrundinfo zur AutorIn, tagclouds sind im Blog eingebunden, klickt man dann auf ein Tag, bekommt man alle Einträge zu einem bestimmten Thema

Seitenleisten lassen sich relativ flexibel gestalten (Tagcloud, neueste Kommentare/Einträge), Archiv zum Zurückblättern, Videos, Einträge als Email, Friendfeed (mashup), alles was ich web2.0 produziere wird dort abgelegt, Flickr-Fotos, link zu anderem Weblog, quick response code: ins internet oder auf produkte, kann mit kamera gescannt werden, dann kommt man vom mobiltelefon auf die website)
