Since the selection committee will consist of some non-Telugu professionals to avoid any bias in the selection process, it is essential that only truly meritorius and needy students are encouraged to apply so that the selection committee will not be inundated with too many applications to screen. It is also essential that all scholarship applications are received with all supporting documents on or before the last date. The applicant’s “need” will be assessed based on the information received (a) from the applicant, and (b) from TANA Foundation’s own sources in Andhra Pradesh.

The loan amount (ranging between ` 60,000 and ` 4,00,000) awarded to each scholar is determined by the norms laid down for the purpose and does not cover the full cost of studies. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount. Select scholars may also qualify for a gift scholarship from the Jamsetji Tata Trust and a Travel Grant from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, based on the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can amount to a maximum of ` 3,80,000.

Process

The Times Scholars programme will span over a period of about 2 months. Following is the detailed process, divided into 4 key stages:

Stage 1: This is when we invite applications. Students currently studying in Class XII (12th) of any school in India can go on our website (timesscholars.com) and fill the application form online. The form cannot be saved or edited. It has to be filled in one go. The last date for submission is 10th September, 2012. Entries will not be accepted after 11:59pm on 10th September. With the help of our panel of experts, we will evaluate the applications and declare a list of shortlisted candidates on 15th September, 2012.

Stage 2: The shortlisted candidates will be asked to take an Aptitude Test on 23rd September, 2012 at one of the following centres:

About the test:

It will be a computer-based test (CBT). The duration of the CBT is 120 minutes and it will be timed. The candidates will need to answer 110 questions. Each of the questions may have either 4 or 5 answer options. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers i.e. 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer. No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions. Most questions will carry 1 mark for the right answer. However, some questions will carry 2 marks for the right answer. This will be indicated at the end of every such question, when you take the test. Candidates are expected to show proficiency in all the areas tested. The following are the broad areas that will be tested.

· Numerical Ability: Your ability to apply simple to complex calculations in basic arithmetic, number sequences and mathematics-related problems/situations.

· Verbal Reasoning: Your ability to comprehend written material, analyze information and solve problems using language-based reasoning. (in this case, English language)

· Logical Reasoning: Your ability to examine and analyze information applying logic and sound mathematical and/or reasoning skills to arrive at a definite conclusion.

· General Awareness: Your awareness of what is happening around the world in Science, Arts and Literature, Geography, Sports and Current Affairs at the National and International levels.

We will declare the results of the test on 2nd October, 2012.

Stage 3: The candidates who will pass the exam will be required to go through a round of discussion with our panel of judges over 9th to 11th October 2012 at one of the following centres:

3. Chennai

4. Delhi

5. Hyderabad

6. Kolkata

7. Mumbai

8. Nagpur

9. Pune

The panel will comprise of academicians, senior TOI editors and other eminent personalities in the field of education. They will conduct a round of group discussions and personal interviews to evaluate the candidates.

Post this round, we will declare the final shortlist of about 100 candidates on 19th October, 2012.

Stage 4: The top 100 candidates will be called for the final round of selection to be held in New Delhi on 2nd & 3rd November, 2012. Here, the candidates will be evaluated by well-known personalities from various fields. They will go through a round of group discussion and personal interview over the two days.

The final results will be declared on November 5th.

The scheme is for non-professional courses only. The selection will be purely on merit basis. The awardees under this scheme can pursue their Post-Graduate programme in any area of specialization and also in any institution of higher learning in the country recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act.

i)Financial assistance will be given to pursue degree and/or post graduate level technical and professional courses from a recognized institution. ii) Students who get admission to a college to pursue technical/professional courses, on the basis of a competitive examination will be eligible for the scholarship.
iii) Students who get admission in technical/professional courses without facing any competitive examination will also be eligible for scholarship. SCHEME OF ‘LIC GOLDEN JUBILEE SCHOLARSHIP’ FOR STUDENTS BELONGING TO THE ECONOMICALLY WEAKER FAMILIES FOR PURSUING HIGHER STUDIES.

1. OBJECTIVE

The objective of the scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of society so as to provide them better opportunities for higher education increase their rate of attainment in higher education and enhance their employability.

2. SCOPE

The scholarship is to be awarded for studies in India in a government or private
college/university,. It will also cover technical and vocational courses in Industrial Training Institutes/ Industrial Training Centres affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) of classes at Graduation level.

3. ELIGIBILITY

Students who have passed Class XII exam or its equivalent in the Academic Year 2010-11 and are interested to pursue higher education in the field of

i) Medicine, Engineering, Graduation, in any discipline, Diploma Course in any field or other equivalent courses.

ii) Vocational Courses through Government recognized Colleges/Institutes or courses in Industrial Training Institutes (ITI).

For i) above Candidates who have passed Class XII exam or equivalent in the Academic year 2010-11 with at least 60% marks or equivalent grade and annual income of whose parents/guardian from all sources does not exceed ` 60,000/ per annum.

For ii) above The basic educational qualification is relaxed to Class X or equivalent with at least 60% marks in the Academic year 2011 subject to income ceiling of parents/guardians.

4. DURATION

Scholarship shall be provided for the entire course.

5. RATE OF SCHOLARSHIP
10,000/- per annum, ` 1000/ payable monthly for ten months by Cheques to the Beneficiary.

6. CONDITIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIP

(i) Scholarship shall be awarded to the students who have secured not less than 60% marks or equivalent grade in the previous final examination and the annual income of whose parents/guardian from all sources does not exceed Rs.60,000/ per annum. Students having the lowest family income shall be given preference in the ascending order.

(ii) The scholarship shall be discontinued if a student fails to secure 50% in B.A./B.COM. and 55% marks in other streams or equivalent grade, in the previous final examination of the course for which scholarship is awarded. Scholarship shall not be awarded for more than the normal period of time taken to obtain certificate/degree.

(iii) Scholarship shall not be given to more than one student in a family.

(iv) The students should be regular in attendance for which the yardstick shall be decided by the competent authority of the school/college/university.

(v) Income certificate should be on self-certification basis by way of an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper for self-employed parents and from employer for employed parents supported by documents such as land held by revenue department in the name of parents.

(vi) If a student violates any other term and condition of the scholarship, the scholarship may be suspended or cancelled.

(vii) If a student is found to have obtained a scholarship by false statement/certificates, his/her scholarship shall be cancelled forthwith and the amount of the scholarship paid shall be recovered, at the discretion of the concerned Divisional Administration of LIC.

(viii) LIC Golden Jubilee Foundation will lay down the detailed procedure for processing and sanctioning of scholarships to eligible students.

(ix) The scheme shall be evaluated at regular intervals by the LICGJF.

(x) The regulations can be changed at any time at the discretion of the Board of Trustees of LICGJF

7. RENEWAL OF SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship, once awarded, may be renewed during the next academic year of the course on the production of certificate that the student has secured 50% in B.A./B.COM. and 55% marks in other streams or equivalent grade in the examination.

Intel® Threading Challenge 2011 is going BIG this year! After three exciting threading competitions, our fourth Threading Challenge is stepping up the excitement with a BIG Grand Prize, a trip to the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco (September 13-15, 2011).

Since 2008, the Intel® Threading Challenge has attracted developers of varying experience from around the world. The active participation from the community has made the Threading Challenge not only a great programming competition, but a great way for community members to engage with each other, trade threading tips, and discover new parallel programming resources.

Last year’s format of two competition levels, Master and Apprentice, generated great excitement and opened the Threading Challenge to a new group of participants. So, we are going to continue the competition with a Master level and Apprentice level, each competing for the Grand Prize for their level, as well as individual problem awards. This 40-core, 80-thread development environment has the latest hardware and software available and will be used by this year's judges to test the winning entries in Threading Challenge 2011 Phase 1.

The Intel® Manycore Testing Lab (MTL) will be made available to Threading Challenge 2011 contestants. Scholarship Description: During the "Discussion Meeting on Harmonic Analysis" held at I.I.Sc. In order to improve the level of Ph.D. aspirants it was felt that a training programme should be started (starting at the B.Sc. level itself) which should expose bright young minds to the excitement of doing mathematics. The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was approached with the proposal and it agreed to fund the programme. The first programme was held in the summer of 1993. This programme has been on since 1993 with funds from NBHM. The programme was highly appreciated by the participants. We receive letters of appreciation from both teachers and the participants. The success of this programme depends mainly on a very small group of mathematicians committed to the improvement of the mathematical scene in our country and as such lacks man-power and infrastructure.

ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in any Biological Science or a Master's degree in Medical Sciences, or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology related areas. The applicant must have at least 4 years of professional experience in the specific area after obtaining the above degree.

iii) The candidate must have a regular position in a University / Organisation / Institute and should be engaged in research and development. Applicants currently working abroad may apply, provided that they have a confirmed placement in an Institute in India. Weightage will be given to applicants with publications arising from research done as an independent investigator in India. The awardee will be eligible for regular research grants through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

ABOUT THE AWARD:

Ø The amount of the Award will be Rs. 10,000/- per month in addition to a regular salary from the host institute.

Ø In addition, the Young Researcher will receive a contingency grant of Rs. 5.00 lakhs per annum for meeting the expenses on consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of the research project under the Award.

HOST INSTITUTION:

The Institution where the candidate is working will provide the necessary infrastructure and administrative support for pursuing research under this Award. Applicants currently working abroad may apply, provided they have a confirmed placement in an Institute in India.

DURATION:

The duration of the Award will be initially for three years, extendable further by two years, on a review by the Experts' Committee.
