BUT, to finish the summer on schraep.net  (we already have < 8°C at night here in Berlin), friend and parisian house veteran Jef K has been so kind to let me post this wonderful oldschool tainted House mixtape. Once again he showcases his talent for warm and sexy House beats, one of his major trademarks since the beginning of his DJ career.

Bio: Anyone bothering to handicap the year-end polls of dance music that mattered in 2010 will likely need to slot in Parisian DJ Jef K’s remix of The Gathering’s “In My System” somewhere near the top. The track has stormed deeper dance floors this year, its infectious bassline a standby in discerning jocks’ crates the world over.

K is a DJ first, though, honing his craft since the early ’90s after a lengthy visit to the UK opened up his ears to the sound of US garage. K took “the vibes,” as he puts it, to Paris and, in turn, became one of the city’s most respected spinners, earning himself a residency at Rex Club in 1998. He brought Dixon to town for the Innervisions’ head first gig outside of Germany, orchestrated Herbert’s first live show in Paris and also held residencies at Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson and Brussels’ Fuse as well. All this in addition to running Silver Network and co-helming the beloved Crack & Speed imprint. Needless to say, the man’s house bona fides are unquestioned.  (Source: Resident Advisor)

The present mix is a declaration of war on the cold winter days I had to spend in Berlin. Five long months of severe chilliness culminating in three weeks without sunshine with people pulling a long face in their ongoing depression. The concept of this mix is simple: energise your world with music and fight frostiness by jumping high to the beat. I tried this several times and it really works. Needless to say that this mix must be handled with care in hot summer days. I hope you enjoy the music, which is a collection of Berlin style electro sound of the last years. Hello everybody,

I’m back again with a new mixtape. This time, it’s something I wanted to put together since very very long , but the necessary time just wasn’t there. During last weekend’s super long train trip, I could do it, finally.

The idea behind this mixtape serie “Sidetracks”  was to put together (in a as seamless way as possible) some of my all time favorite songs of various music styles that I can hear over and over, for some of them without  losing the ability to give these specials shivers.  On the other hand, the selected songs had also to have the potential to be listened at en passant, while for instance at work or doing anything focused. The challenge:  Intense listening pleasure & relaxing entertainment.

I think it worked out, as far as I am concerned though. I hope you’ll have the same experience.

Dear friends,

after months of silence, mainly due to the birth of my wonderful son as well as to a busy dj schedule, I’m finally back with a new mixtape. It’s actually the live recording of Christopher and Felicia’s wedding party, june 5th, 2010. The wedding was fabulous and the party simply rocked.

The music is what I would call eclectic, mixing all kinds of different music styles (disco, funk, rock, punk, grunge, rap, balkanic, house, techno, and the list goes on). The electro heads might have less fun listening to it, but all the others less underground tainted should enjoy, during a long car trip or even for a party.

About Filippo: Metamorphosis and reinvention are key themes. Equally prolific as remix artist and producer, Filippo has reinvigorated tracks for artists of the calibre of Goldfrapp, Fischerspooner and Kosheen, and many other artist.

A flag-bearer for DJ Hell’s genre redefining ‘International Deejay Gigolo’ label in the late 90’s with his release ‘Boing Bumm Tschag’, Filippo cemented his big player status as resident of infamous Berlin club ‘Cookies’ as well as highly coveted DJ at parties for everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Mario Testino.  Artist album ‘Disco Volante’ and collaborations with Terranova and The Cosmonauts of Innerspace followed, further distinguishing his place at the helm of the disco charged house aesthetic at the birth of the millennium. Equally prominent in his productions, an intuitive logic maps Filippo’s ascendancy to the forefront of the Berlin soundscape. Sicilian born, his Italo Disco education resonates throughout his releases on seminal labels such as Eskimo and K7!, and reflects in his relationships formed with studio mates and kindred spirits Ewan Pearson and Sasse.
His highly acclaimed “Red Hot” EP on Eskimo was also played by John Peel in his Radioshow.
His latest transformation has found fertile ground on Sasse’s ‘Moodmusic’ imprint, with last years ‘World EP’ paving the way for a studio album to be released in the winter of this year. These sophisticated house and ultra slick techno productions count as some of Filippo’s finest work yet, which suggests that his decision to send the naughty boy to bed might just be taking the party to the next level.

This is a new volume of my DJ mix serie named after precious stones. This time I felt more like mixing together Minimal and Techno tracks. The result became a deep uptempo techno mix, suited for after hour moments. Panorama Bar/Techno fans will enjoy this one, the others should probably avoid it: don’t bother listening if you’re not into Techno.

And for the interested, according to Wikipedia Agate (pronounced ['ægət]) is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silica), chiefly chalcedony, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. The stone was given its name by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shore line of the river Achates (Greek: Αχάτης) sometime between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC.

Topaz is a fluorine aluminium silicate and comes in yellow, yellow-brown, honey-yellow, flax, brown, green, blue, light blue, red and pink … and sometimes it has no colour at all. The topaz. The topaz has been known for at least 2000 years and is one of the gemstones which form the foundations of the twelve gates to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. These so-called apocalyptic stones are intended to serve in protection against enemies and as a symbol of beauty and splendour.

Topaz is also the name of the second volume of the Deep House mix serie I started in 2007 and containing current charts. Enjoy!

Finally, I may present this 7th lounge mix which took me so long to finalise. I started with Clara Hill’s ‘Be Like That’ which was released in 2007 and added melodious tunes from Beauty Room, [Re:Jazz], Eve Mendes and Grazia. To reflect some cool flavour, I added songs from Vincenzo, Menoosha and Sweetback and selected Bomb The Bass’ 1988 remake of ‘Say A Little Prayer’ as the classic song of this mix. It took quite a while to figure out the right track order. However, I finally succeeded with the mix and I hope that you like the result. Hoop-C.

This mix goes back to the roots of jazz-funk and spheric funk music. The list of artists includes famous names like Azymuth, Bob James, Deodato, Hank Crawford, Herbie Hancock and Rythm Heritage, but also less well known names like American Gypsy, Cream De Coco and Michael Longo. Certain songs like 9th Creation’s ‘Bubble Gum’ are extremely rare, others like Klaus Wunderlich’s ‘Let’s Do The Latin Hustle’ do not even seem to exist. One of my favourite songs in the mix is Archie Bell & the Dells’ ‘Strategy’ from 1979 which was covered by Faithless for ‘Muhammad Ali’ in 2002. Also don’t miss Rosko’s ‘Peace Maker’ which is based on Richard Strauss’ ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ dating back to 1896. While listening to the song you may find that the horns are slightly fluttering. Please believe me that this effect is definitely not caused by my turntable. Hoop-C.

It is always a demanding task to look out for different artists that share a specific style of music. You will probably agree that artists like Goldfrapp, Tone Loc, Norah Jones or Clara Hill do not have much in common at first sight. However, in combination they serve the same mood and create a relaxing and warming flow of music. Most titles on this 5ths edition of lounge mixes were released in 2007 or 2006 but as always I have also included some classic songs like Tone Loc’s ‘All Through The Night’ from 1991 and Shirley Bassey’s 1970 cover version of ‘Light My Fire’ which was originally released by The Doors in 1967. My personal favourite on this mix is Goldfrapp’s ‘Pilots (On A Star)’ – not typical for Goldfrapp, but famous for me. Enjoy! Hoop-C.

Amethyst (SiO₂) is a violet or purple variety of quartz often used as an ornament. The name comes from the Greek a (“not”) and methuskein (“to intoxicate”), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness; the ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

2-3 years ago, Steffen “Dixon” Berkhahn started the Innercity clubnights at WEEK12END Berlin, bringing back to Techno/Electro/Minimal Berlin much needed Deep House sounds. It fastly became one of the most-talked about parties in the German capital with a very special type of music, an own style, that was and still is a major inspiration to many music lovers, and in particular to me.

So…. Having been spoiled for so long by this great music, having harrassed Dixon so often for the track titles…, I finally grouped the IMHO most remarkable tracks of the 2004-2005 years (at least some of them) in one mix together. I hope you will enjoy it and above all, get a little impression of the “innervision music style”. And if you like this type of music, and if you’ve never been to an Innercity night at WEEK12END in Berlin, then you sincerely shouldn’t wait any longer.

When Martine Girault’s “Revival” was released in 1992 lounge music was not yet a brand at all. However, this song (and many others from older days) represents very much of what I understand under lounge music. It is laid back downtempo music; very much cooling down but at the same time inspiring. Many songs in this mix follow that definition, e.g. Ursula Rucker’s “Circe” or Jay Jay Johanson’s “Tell The Girls I’m Back In Town”. However, I included also some mellow and soul songs in this mix to keep it balanced. Therefore, you’ll find names like Incognito, Afterlife and Grace Jones on the mix as well. Please pay special attention to Hildegard Knef’s “Du Bist Mein Salz In Der Suppe” or Sting’s “Windmills Of Your Mind” – they are remarkable classics, I love them. (Hoop C)

Moreover, it includes some very nice jazz-funk tunes from back in the days – check out Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” (which you might recognize from Will Smith’s “Summertime” hit), Sivuca’s version of Bill Wither classic song “Ain’t No Sunshine” or Randy Crawford’s “Rio De Janeiro Blue”. It’s worth mentioning that two songs in this mix are also featured in the Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape collection – Talc’s “Modern Sleep Over” and D’Nell’s “This Thing”. This mix was inspired by rap classics like Gary Byrd’s “The Crown” (featuring Stevie Wonder), Fatback’s “Is This The Future” or Kurtis Blow’s “Rappin” – songs which accompanied me for a long time. You might recognize that the versions featured in this mix do not exactly match with the original versions; that’s because I re-edited the songs to exclude certain long winded intro periods and to focus the mix on the parts of the songs I really like. Also, I combined multiple songs in one track as some rappers based their lyrics on the same beats, e.g. on Trouble Funk’s “Pump Me Up”. I am aware of the fact that this set of songs is only one amongst many other possible alternatives of a rap-classics tape; however, it is my hommage to rap music in its early days and I think every featured song has deserved its right to be in there.
