      <title>Today’s robots walk, swim, fly, and manipulate objects on the go—and they’re just getting started | Science</title>

      <description>When you think of a robot, you likely picture one of three things: a drone, a robotic manipulator picking up goods from a factory conveyor belt, or an autonomous vehicle of some kind—perhaps a vacuum cleaner or a car. These three types of robots differ drastically in their body design and in the ways they move. They are also consistent with how roboticists have traditionally designed robots for one specific type of locomotion. However, recent advances in control systems have enabled the design of robots capable of transitioning between multiple forms of locomotion, for example, from rolling to walking and from flying to sliding like a snake. Better still, some can use legs as hands or adjust their flight patterns in order to manipulate objects as they move. This progress represents a major advancement in the field and it is worth diving deeper into the many challenges that had to be overcome along the way in order for such robots to be realized.</description>

      <description>The global blind box market, in which consumers buy collectible figurines without knowing which figurine is in which box, has expanded at extraordinary speed. China’s designer toy industry alone is projected to exceed US$15 billion in retail sales by 2026—a more than 15-fold increase since 2015 (1). The global collectible figurine market is forecast to reach US$49 billion by 2034, up from US$26 billion in 2023 (2). Blind boxes derive their appeal from the randomized reveal of collectible figurines, an approach that drives repeat purchasing and high product turnover. Because this consumption model inherently amplifies material throughput and waste generation, regulatory frameworks should address the end-of-life management of blind box figurines.</description>

      <title>Accurately accounting for China’s typhoon losses | Science</title>

      <description>China’s low-elevation coastal cities, which hold a large share of the country’s population and economic output, face growing compound risks from sea level rise, storm surge, and extreme rainfall (1, 2). China’s annual losses from natural hazards such as typhoons average about US$76 billion (3), and hydrometeorological hazards generate large and recurrent economic losses (4, 5). However, cost estimates often focus on structural damage and overlook the economic shock caused by supply chain disruption, power outages, health effects, and slow productivity recovery (6–8). To reduce the systemic vulnerability that turns typhoons into national economic setbacks, China should improve the accuracy of loss accounting and strengthen preparedness.</description>
