Killina Secondary School had a very successful outing at the South Leinster’s Schools Track and Field campaign this year, with 6 athletes qualifying for the Leinster Championships. The athletes that Qualified in their events were:

Ger Godley Triple Jump, Andrew Delaney 400m, Matthew Molloy 1500m Steeple Chase and the 3000m, Emily Grennan 1500m Steeple Chase, Conor Butler 1500m and the 800m and Emma Darby 200m. First year students, Aofie Bourke and Martha Brickland both took part in the 100m and the 75m Hurdles, with Martha finishing 5^th in the final of the 100m.

The Leinster’s will take place on the 13^th and 16^th of May in Santry Stadium, Dublin. We hope to see some of Killina’s Athletes qualifying for the All Irelands that are fixed for Saturday 30^th of June in Tullamore.

TY2 students, Killina Presentation Secondary School presented, Mr. Moran of St. Vincent de Paul a cheque
and hygiene packs. The students had undertaken many fundraising activities and a  raising awareness
campaign to highlight, the problems and challenges faced by homeless people.

Denise was presented with her prize from the National Final of Student Enterprise Awards. She won an €80 voucher

TY2 along with Ms .Slevin made delicious soup. They opened up their soup kitchen on May 1st and served homemade/school made tomato, vegetable and potato and leek soup.
This hard work was part of their homelessness project, to raise awareness in the school.

Megan O’Brien of TY1 entered a competition called Young Spiders and won the prize. This meant a special visit to the wax museum in Dublin on April 28th.

Killina TYs Impress at Student Enterprise Awards

Thursday 19 March saw the fruition of many months of hard work for four of our TY mini-companies. The county final of the Student Enterprise Awards was again this year held in the Tullamore Court Hotel, and again the Killina delegates excelled with their respective businesses.

Representing the school were: Cliplox, Finding First Year, Keep Cool, and Creative Creations.

After two and a half hours of judging, the verdicts came in. The first business to receive an award was Cliplox, winning the Students’ Choice Award. Team members Sarah Bracken, Ger Godley, Emily Tierney, Michael Hickey and Derek Mooney took to the stage on a wave of support from fellow students, who voted Cliplox as the best mini-company on the day.

And there was no time to rest on their laurels! Almost immediately after, they were straight back up on stage, this time to receive a special merit award for innovation. Their clever concept of a magnetic hair-clip holder that can attach to mirrors and walls clearly impressed the judges. The professional appearance of this high-quality, innovative product means it not only eliminates an age-old problem for ladies (and guys with long hair), but looks good doing it!

The next Killina company to be awarded for their achievements was Finding First Year. Team members Conor Owens, Darren Burke, Stephen Cowen, Thomas Dolan and Dan O’Connor received the award for best use of technology and social media for the slick-looking e-book edition of their product, Finding First Year.

This well-received book is a guide to the challenges of secondary school for incoming first years. Written by secondary school students, for secondary school students, Finding First Year provides in-depth advice on all of the problems, challenges and queries a student starting second-level education may have.

The final Killina team to be honoured was Keep Cool, receiving the 2nd overall prize. Unfortunately team members Niall O’Rourke, Emma Horan and Luke O’Connell just missed out in what was an extremely competitive contest to represent Offaly in Croke Park this April; choosing a winner was said to be a “mammoth task” by the judges.

Keep Cool researched and developed a unique range of therapeutic hypothermia equipment, for the emergency treatment of brain-damage in Cardiac Arrest, Stroke, and sports related head-injuries such as concussion. Since the start of TY, it has come from an idea to a finished product that will hopefully have positive effects in the real world. 

Creative Creations (previously known as Santa’s Little Helpers) received much positive feed-back from both judges and fellow exhibitors for their charming range of personalised cards and gifts. Team members Shauna Connolly, Katie Bryant, Denise Condron, Rachel Downes and Sinéad Kearney impressed with their turning of a passion for arts and crafts into a profitable business.

All four Killina companies are delighted to have been so well presented at the awards: we took home four of the seven available awards in the senior category. We are all extremely happy with the valuable experience and knowledge we have gained from our enterprises. This extends also to the other seven Killina companies who unfortunately could not be at the competition on Thursday. Overall this module has been a very valuable part of Transition Year for us.

We must commend our teachers for all their hard work with us this year; it is an absolute certainty that we would have been lost without them! A special thanks must be extended to Mr. Concannon, Ms. Guinan, Mrs. Hall and Ms. Nolan, for their roles in helping us in our endeavours.
