Boolean Searches in Scopus: Understanding Operator Precedence & Best Practices

When searching in Scopus, users have access to a comprehensive, curated and trusted academic database. It can be used to find relevant authoritative research, identify top experts and gain strategic insights. Combing through content from over 7000 global publishers to find relevant research for your project can seem daunting, but Scopus provides tools to quickly refine your search. Among these tools is Scopus Advanced search which allows you to fine-tune the scope of your search using field codes, proximity operators and/or Boolean operators

When conducting literature searches in Scopus, the structure of a Boolean query can significantly impact both the number and relevance of the results retrieved. Since Scopus' search logic was designed with librarians in mind, many beginner and intermediate users may not be fully aware of Boolean Operator Precedence and best practices for using parentheses. These factors are crucial in determining how search terms are processed and in what order.

In this article, we’ll explain how Boolean logic is applied in Scopus and share best practices for constructing queries. Additionally, we’ll introduce an upcoming update to Boolean operator precedence, set to roll out in fall 2025, with full implementation expected in early 2026.

Many thanks to Rosie Dunne, Research Services Librarian at Ollscoil na Gaillimhe – University of Galway, for her expert insights and examples that contributed to this blog. (0000-0003-2256-5590) - ORCID

Understanding Boolean Operator Precedence in Scopus

Boolean operators define how search terms interact. However, the order in which these operators are applied can significantly impact the results, especially if parentheses are not used to properly group key concepts. Basic or Advanced lexical searches with multiple operators, Scopus processes queries in the following order of precedence:

Boolean 1.png

Best Practices for Constructing Boolean Queries w/ proximity in Scopus

Proximity searching is used to narrow searches by finding words that are next to, or near, or within a specified distance from each other. This is useful when you are looking for concepts that might be expressed by multiple different phrases.

Example 1: Searching for Tidal Energy Research

Consider these three queries, all with the same user intent. However, one of them produced unexpected results:

Boolean 2.png

Boolean 2.5.png

Example 2: Enhancing Complex Queries

Many users assume complex searches require lengthy queries, but grouping enhances clarity and efficiency. Using parentheses to structure searches ensures logical relationships between keywords, improving precision and yielding better results.

Consider these two queries:

Boolean 3.png

Example 3: Comparison of Different Scopus Search Types

Boolean 4.png

Boolean 5.png

Boolean 6.png

Upcoming Changes to Boolean Operator Precedence (Fall 2025/Early 2026)

Starting in late 2025, Scopus will gradually update Boolean operator precedence to align with the current industry standards and finalize the update in early 2026.

If your queries do not have parentheses to specify precedence, Scopus will follow this new default order when the new update is rolled out:

AND NOT

AND = the (implicit) default

OR (lowest precedence)

Users who prefer the old precedence rules can still enforce them by manually grouping terms with the correct parentheses.

Final Thoughts

Understanding Boolean operator precedence and search types in Scopus is crucial for retrieving the desired accurate and comprehensive search results. The best way to gain an understanding of Boolean concepts is to experiment. Use Scopus Advance Search search with the concepts shown here with your next reserch project. Just remember to apply these best practices, to maximize the effectiveness of Boolean searches in Scopus:

Use parentheses ( ) to control precedence and avoid unexpected results.

Keep queries concise and structured to improve readability and efficiency.

Be aware of the different search types and what they are suitable for based on your need.

Prepare for the upcoming Boolean operator precedence update by familiarizing yourself with the new precedence rules AND making sure to group your queries if you want to specify a certain precedence.

Release Date:

March 18 2025

#scopus #scopussearch #booleanlogic

100 million reasons to trust Scopus

Scopus data crosses the 100 million item threshold!

In February 2025, Scopus added its 100 millionth content item! In addition to sharing our milestone, the Scopus team wants to share Scopus data insights with Academic Researchers, Data Scientists and Librarians.     Data is key to Elsevier’s position as a leader in information and analytics for customers across global research and health ecosystems.   As an expertly curated abstract and citation database, Scopus has data at its core.  Scopus also provides important data points to Elsevier solutions such as SciVal and Pure.

Our goal with Scopus is to combine a uniquely comprehensive, expertly curated abstract and citation database with enriched data and linked scholarly literature across a wide

100 million image 3.jpg

variety of disciplines. We work to find relevant and authoritative research, identify experts and provide access to reliable data, metrics and analytical tools.   None of this is possible without a love for data and a dedication to providing quality breadth and depth of content.

What type of content is in Scopus

The Scopus product team loves our data and there's quite a bit to love. Passing the 100 million item threshold is only part of the Scopus data story. Over the past 20 years we have established relationships with 7,000 publishers in 105 countries.  This allows us to provide content from 28,791 active peer-reviewed journals.  We are also proud of our Open Access content included in Scopus.  There are currently 25.1 million open access articles from 8,137 open access journals indexed in Scopus.

Through the years, we have also created relationships to expand the types of content and data included in Scopus:

Book Titles - Scopus includes 3.56M total book items from 1,283 individual book series and 399K stand-alone books

Conferences – Scopus includes content from 167K conference events including 12.9M conference papers

Preprints - We added preprints to Scopus in 2021 and now have 2.64M articles from 7 preprint servers

Funding - There are over 23.4 million fully indexed funding acknowledgements in Scopus

Scopus focuses on quality and accuracy

Scopus has great depth and breadth of article content for researchers, but Scopus data is not just about the quantity.  The quality of our data is a key reason it is trusted by academic institutions, ranking organizations, funding bodies and corporations.  Scopus records contain up to 180 fields and we monitor quality on 28 fields on a monthly basis. Our data is measured using a stringent goldset which is fully representative of the whole corpus of researchers.

Content curation is another important aspect of Scopus quality.  Only the most reliable journals and their content are available in Scopus as they are carefully curated and ultimately selected by the independent Content Selection Advisory Board (CSAB), an international group of subject experts across all fields of research. The CSAB is comprised of 17 Subject Chairs, each representing a specific subject field. The Board works with the Scopus team to understand how Scopus is used, what content is relevant for users and what enhancements should be made. Year round, the CSAB review titles that are submitted to Scopus.  New content is added to Scopus after a rigorous evaluation process by the subject experts of the Content Selection and Advisory Board (CSAB). The experts of the CSAB determine whether a title is eligible for indexing in Scopus using the Scopus title selection criteria. They also continuously re-evaluate titles indexed in Scopus to ensure the quality of the existing content is maintained.

The importance of Scopus content certification

The Scopus team is proud of our transparent selection process and independent review board. The international experts on our Content Selection and Advisory Board (CSAB) continually review new titles using both quantitative and qualitative measures. Since the establishment of the CSAB in 2005, Scopus has continuously collected review data as part of the content curation process.

One of the important aspects of the content curation done by Scopus and the CSAB is to certify the content that is included in the database. Only then content can be trusted and be used for the application it is intended for. Certification means that procedures are followed to ensure that content is selected according to certain policies and qualification standards.

Scopus selects (or certifies) academic journals (certifiers of research output) and therefore certifies the certifier. In that process Scopus needs to assess if the certification, or peer-review process applied by the journal is sound and meets the quality criteria. Peer-review comes in many different flavours such as double blind, single blind or open peer-review. Scopus is open to any of these forms and the type of peer-review does not determine the quality of peer-review per se. However, what procedure is followed and who executes it, is important.

In academic journal publishing, the Version of Record marks the end of the editorial and publishing process and is also known as the definitive, authorized, formal, or published version of an article (NISO). An article in Version of Record stage will include any editorial improvements such as copy editing, typesetting and improvements as part of the peer-review process. Therefore, the Version of Record is a guarantee that the article has gone through the entire peer-review, or certification process.

The editorial oversight of the journal, usually an Editor-in-Chief or a (Section) Editor, is responsible for deciding if the peer-review process is complete. Based on input from reviewers, the Editor decides if the research fits the journal, is scientifically sound, is authentic and free of research integrity concerns and where applicable comments and recommendations from the reviewers are addressed and therefore the article is approved (certified) for publication in the journal.

If a journal is selected for Scopus, it covers all articles, also if this journal is for example publishing negative results or work that would have been rejected and unpublished otherwise. Scopus does not interfere with the content and certification decisions of individual articles, as long as the articles have gone through the entire publishing and peer-review process and thus the certification fully consistent and complete.

The coverage of eLife in Scopus

eLife is an independent nonprofit committed to improving the way research is reviewed and communicated. We are aware of the current discussion about eLife and its indexing status. Scopus has been monitoring eLife since the changes to its publishing model were announced and we have been in communication with eLife to get verification of our understanding of the model and to clarify our positioning.

The changes to the elife publishing model that were implemented at the beginning of 2023 include:

All papers will be published as Reviewed Preprints;

No accept/reject decision is made at the end of the peer-review process;

The decision on what to do next (such as revise and resubmit, or to declare it as the final Version of Record) will entirely be in the hands of the author.

In this model there is no guarantee that with the Version of Record the article has gone through the entire peer-review process and that where applicable comments and recommendations from the reviewers are addressed. That is because in the curate step, declaring the article as Version of Record is in the hands of the author self and not the (editorial oversight of the) journal. With that we find that the certification in the current model of eLife is not fully consistent nor complete.

Scopus, in consultation with the CSAB, concludes that eLife does not fit the criteria and definition of a journal in Scopus anymore and the following decisions were made.

eLife will be taken out of the Scopus journal collection and will no longer be included in journal metrics and rankings.

eLife content will continue to be indexed by moving it to the Scopus preprint collection. That means all eLife content will remain discoverable in Scopus as preprints and the items will be attributed to the respective Scopus author profiles as preprints. Note: Preprints do not contribute to any existing Scopus metrics of the main (journal) collection of published content.

Although eLife introduced the new model at the beginning of 2023, not all articles processed and published since then have gone through the new model. Therefore, the cut-off to transfer eLife to the preprint collection will be publication year 2024. All eLife articles with a publication year of 2023 and earlier will remain in Scopus as part of the journal collection. This content will also remain to be applied to the eLife journal profile and its metrics.

Release Date:

December 10 2024

#Scopus

Scopus content policy and selection changes

For your research to be the best that it can be, you need access to the most up-to-date and highest-quality interdisciplinary content out there. This is why Scopus has a clearly stated selection policy and an internationally acclaimed board of selection experts, so you can be sure that what you see on Scopus meets your high standards. Click here to visit the Scopus Content and Selection page for details on our selection process and policies.

Blog image 2.png

As the largest indexer of global research content, Scopus includes titles from more than 7,000 publishers worldwide. These journals, books and conference papers are visible to millions of Scopus users, who in turn read your content and then cite it in papers, in grant applications and reports, and in patent applications. To ensure that Scopus serves the broadest information needs of researchers, our Content Selection and Advisory Board (CSAB) continuously reviews suggestions and publishing programs to expand our content listings. Click here to learn about the CSAB and meet the members.

Changes to the Scopus content policy

Occasionally changes in academic research publishing and technology require changes to our content policy. Elsevier is committed to ensuring the accuracy and quality of our content, so these changes have been created based on thorough study and analysis by team members.

The following changes are now active and will be used in the Scopus content selection process moving forward:

Removing "2 year" conditions for newly launched journals

One of Scopus journal selection criteria is publication history. We used to make this conditional for most publishers that their newly launched journals can only submit for Scopus review by the CSAB after 2 years of publication. Since August 2024, this conditional criteria is removed. We now advise the publisher of the title to carefully determine what the right moment is to submit the title for Scopus in terms of how much content has been published. Please note that the CSAB still requires some publication history and a number of publications for review and in case of a negative evaluation outcome, there will be an embargo period that the journal cannot apply.  With this change, we adopt full transparency and all publishers will be treated equally with the benefit that more recent titles may end up in Scopus faster.

Encouraging journals to integrate Generative AI policies

Generative AI (GenAI) presents both opportunities and challenges in scientific writing and academic publishing. To improve transparency, Scopus encourages journals to have a dedicated GenAI policy and disclose the use of GenAI in creating content or anywhere else in the peer review and publishing process. We are aware that GenAI is developing rapidly, and Scopus does not demand specific requirements or wording that needs to be covered in such a policy. However, note that major publishers and associations already publish policies or declarations on the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing on their websites, such as:

- The use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing (Click here to view Elsevier Generative AI policies for journals)

- WAME Recommendations on Chatbots and Generative Artificial Intelligence in Relation to Scholarly Publications (Click here to view WAME recommendations)

Enhanced scrutiny for journal changes

To maintain our high-quality standards, at Scopus, we ensure that changes to the source (journal) are carefully monitored and validated. The authenticity of source changes are verified before any updates are made. Source changes can include, but are not limited to, changes to the title name, ISSN, ownership, or Editorial oversight of the journal. It is therefore not guaranteed that a journal will remain selected for Scopus coverage after the change, and this is subject to continued discretional review by the Scopus Content Selection & Advisory board (CSAB). Journals that have undergone significant change will be considered a new journal and may be submitted for Scopus review again according to the regular title review process.

To come to a decision to accept or reject a title for Scopus, Elsevier follows the independent advice from the CSAB. However, Elsevier in consultation with the CSAB reserves the right to change decisions, adjust the selection criteria, halt, remove, or re-evaluate titles that are accepted for Scopus without prior notice.

SDGs have been available on Scopus Document Details pages starting from 2021, and also recently introduced on Scopus Organizational pages.

UN SDG Logo.png

Elsevier’s SDG Classification:

SDGs are mapped to a document by matching terms from a Scopus record against search queries, plus a predictive machine learning element, for each SDG

The inputs are Title, Abstract, Author-Keywords, Indexed-Terms, and Subject-Areas

The input language is limited to text in the English

An article can have none or many classifications associated with it

SDGs have been added on the author profile pages and appear under the rebranded “Impact” section (formerly known as “Author Metrics). More than 10 million author profiles feature at least one SDG on Scopus.com.

Thanks to the introduction of SDGs on Scopus author profiles, it is now possible to:

track and showcase individual researcher contributions to SDGs

quickly access relevant author’s documents grouped under each SDG

assess authors’ societal contributions and impact

learn more about each SDG

SDGs can be found in the Impact tab (formerly known as “Author metrics”

How are Scopus Organizational Profiles Created?

A Scopus Organization Profile is the complete record of your organization’s publications indexed in Scopus. In 2024, we launched a new version of this page and with this blog we would like to share with you how Scopus Organization Profiles are created.

The Scopus team’s detailed 3-step curation process captures your organization’s structure and data, which is then entered into the OrgDB —Elsevier’s database of organizations. OrgDB powers the algorithm that scans the affiliations of the 10,000 articles indexed in

Screenshot 2024-09-26 201637.png

Scopus each day. When it identifies a publication from your organization, it assigns it to your organization profile. You can use the Institution Profile Wizard (IPW) to make corrections to your existing organization profile or add new organizations — these changes are vetted and then fed into OrgDB.

This ensures that your organization profile is regularly, reliably and dynamically updated, reducing manual input for your organization.

No organization profile is the same

The Scopus organization curation team conducts extensive research to model an organization and its relationships. Our organization curation team has devised a thorough 3-step process to capture the most accurate representation of your organization as possible. We have extensive policies around the data captured in OrgDB.

Step 1: Understand country conventions and research landscape

The team works closely with regional contacts to understand the research relationships and practices in each country; for example, the nature of ownership of collaborative research institutes or relationships between universities and teaching hospitals.

Step 2: Capture name and address metadata - Identify and capture variations in mentions in publications

The team uses official online sources, including your organization’s website, to identify the correct primary name and metadata for your organization, along with alternate names, for example: local language names and names arising from mergers or brand changes. The team also collects the variations in mentions that authors use in publications. This includes potential misspellings, different locations, as well as local language names.

Did you know that you can update your organization’s data via the Institution Profile Wizard (IPW)? Learn more about IPW in this recent blog article - Scopus Institutional Profile Wizard user interface redesign

Step 3: Identify and link to related organizations

The team also captures your organization’s relationships with the sub-orgs in its org structure. There are multiple relationship types stored in the database that can capture sub-orgs that are part of your organization, or even ones that were formed from a split or merger. We also keep track of any jointly owned units with other organizations.

Would you like more information about your organization profile or IPW? Approach your Customer Success Manager. They can help with any IPW-related questions; for example, how to access or use it. They can also connect you to the product team, who are always happy to work with you to fine tune your profile.
