SCOTIABANK Jamaica says it is very pleased with a policy that requires two valid identifications from non-account holders to cash a cheque, despite being the only commercial bank to have such a requirement.

Scotia, in response to a Business Observer query, said the policy was implemented October 2008 "...in response to the element of risk associated with fraudulent IDs which are quite prevalent... The requirement for two pieces of ID is intended to reduce or eliminate this risk."

Members of staff from Scotiabank’s Highgate branch donated $700,000 worth of nursing scrubs to the Port Maria and Annotto Bay hospitals on Thursday July 8, 2010. The Scotiabank team was responding to an appeal from the North East Regional Health Authority for a donation of apparel to be worn by the operating and nursing teams. The facilities have been experiencing a shortage for the several months and this has hampered their effective delivery of health care.

Just over $4,658,010 will be invested in projects that are focussed on recycling plastic bottles, reusing or the repurposing of newspaper and other paper products, the replanting of green areas in schools and coastal clean ups across the island. These initiatives that are all aimed at protecting and revitalising the environment will begin labour day 2010.

What can Greece Learn from Jamaica?

Several months ago a yawning fiscal deficit, spiraling financing costs and a closed capital market threatened a full blooded economic disaster in Jamaica. A number of rating downgrades coupled with a very unstable currency added to the frustration of Jamaicans. The country needed a “game changing” event since the often adopted “muddle through” option was no longer available or applicable to a very bad economic backdrop. Taking the ‘bull by the horn’, the Jamaican economy took its first stride on its path to emerge from its fiscal woes.

Going to school for 50 small children at the Alexandria and Hope Basic Schools in New Ground Clarendon is an exciting adventure, as with all children their age. They are oblivious to the fact that it’s a cellar in the principal’s home and a changing room in the community centre that’s “school”. Teachers and students in the changing room deal with a leaking roof, no windows, no doors and rough concrete floors which left the children with several bruises when they fall.

Grade 6 students Rashade and Sapphire are not the typical 12 year olds living in an inner city community. They are brilliant straight ‘A’ students with exemplary behavior destined for a big break in life! This says, Cecile Palmer, their principal at Holy Family Primary, an inner-city school located in Central Kingston where despite the harsh economic circumstances parents, students come to school daily, are fed a balanced meal and perform exceptionally well. At least, all the students in the Scotiabank sponsored breakfast feeding programme!

A credit card is neither inherently good nor bad, it's just a matter of how you use it.

Indeed, owning a credit card offers numerous benefits; count among them purchasing power, convenience and safety. But these benefits can come at a very high cost as the interest rates on credit cards run up to over 40 per cent in Jamaica. Therefore, you must learn how to use one to your benefit, but this requires diligence and discipline.

Sunday Finance compiled a number of tips to help you take care of your credit card expenses in a frugal way.

On our own shores we also experienced an earthquake on a much smaller scale and financially we were faced with the Debt Exchange Offer presented by the Government of Jamaica.

Scotiabank Jamaica is donating $5million to the Red Cross to assist in the provision of international aid to Haiti. The cash donation will then be turned over to the Haitian Red Cross to purchase relief supplies in that country as a way to boost economic activity and pump cash into the already cash strapped system as a further economic fallout is expected. Scotiabank Jamaica’s donation follows closely on that of Scotiabank International which announced a donation of CDN$250,000 also to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

Scotiabankers making a change in their communities

Can a handful of individuals lead a movement of change that saves the lives of people rushed to emergency rooms in hospitals in Jamaica, build a basic school for children without a place to learn, or construct homes for families living in barely standing structures? "Yes", they say. "We can do it!" It's called volunteerism; responding to the call to help a brother or sister in need. So say the Scotiabank Volunteers.

BOJ slashes Rates!, Unit Trusts Shine!

Since the start of the calendar year, the Government of Jamaica has slashed interest rates by 650 basis points across all tenures forcing investors to reduce their required rate of return on fixed income investments. As such, investors, who in recent months were enjoying above 15% return on Certificate of Deposits (CDs), now have to settle for sub 15% rates through their financial intermediaries. However, this is not the case with fixed income Unit Trust Funds which are still providing competitive returns to investors.

What is a Unit Trust?

With a budget as a tool of survival, and, with surgical cuts when necessary, individuals can get the space they need to breathe when disposable income grows less.

For those who are using lines of credit, credit cards, credit-union loans, company loans and salary advances to make up monthly shortfalls, it is time to budget.

Jamaica's woeful economic plight has been the subject of much discussion as the country waits with bated breath for the IMF to throw it a lifeline that will serve at best as a temporary panacea. During the course of this month, the three leading rating agencies, Standard&Poor's, Moody's and Fitch have downgraded Jamaica and recommended that it restructures. However, the Chief Economist of Scotia Capital Dr Warren Jestin does not see doom and gloom and believes that Jamaica can get out of its present predicament as the world economy recovers.
