Most of us have experienced the all too familiar email requesting that we hand over bank account details to help a dying Nigerian.

However, The Register reported last week that “Prince Obi Matumbe Akumbe” has turned to social media in a tech-savvy attempt to steal bank account details. The supposed scam artist has created a YouTube and Twitter account, to stay in tune with current technology.

His video had two responses; one person willing to take up his offer, and another blasting it as nonsense. It took me around ten seconds to figure out that this was entirely parodical, due to a number of hints, some subtle and some not so.

All three of the YouTube accounts (and Twitter accounts) were signed up for on the same day, 23rd August 2009, which was a point blank giveaway. The quality and dimension stays the same in all of the videos, not to mention the similar acting style of the participants, which I must point out seems too scripted.

To me, this seems like an unfortunately failed LonelyGirl15-style project. If it was not for a few minor oversights by those behind this, then it may have succeeded. However, the idea has certainly generated a lot of angry comment on the internet from gullible viewers, which is definitely a plus.

It looks like this is definitely something to watch. Who knows, it could evolve into something bigger?
