That means a lot of items left in stock have drastically reduced prices. It also means that when they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

To make room for the new, we need a good clear out and tidy up.
We’re also destashing our homes and workshop area, so this clear out is going to be HUGE and ruthless.
We’ll be putting together some grab bags that will be so full of goodies that you’ll wonder if we’ve lost our minds.

The changes to Scrappindipity will be happening gradually (both in store and online) over the next few months.
We’re adjusting our sails and setting a slightly different course for ourselves -we’re excited about the direction we’re heading off in and hope that you will be too. These changes will enable us to continue serving you with the enthusiasm and passion that you know us for -- with an extra burst of energy and a dash more creativity.

If you’d like to stay up to date with what’s happening at Scrappindipity, please subscribe to our feed, and sign up to our newsletter using the box below or shoot an email to bec@scrappindipity.com.au to get yourself on the list.

Until next time,

What a class!

It was our first class upstairs in the beautiful Rialtos Function Centre, and the venue was a definite hit.
Think chandeliers, mirrors and sheer curtains. Oh and plenty of elbow room!

Linda made sure that everyone had a wonderful time and the room was abuzz with everyone inking, spritzing, dabbing, scribbling, scraping, moulding, mixing, pouring and embellishing along to cool tunes and the hum of heat guns.

Lunch was a delicious round table with fresh sandwiches, homemade spicy pumpkin soup (Thanks Brenda! You can cook for us anytime!), homebaked bread, oh and cupcakes of course!

The process was deliciously messy with splattering and spritzing at every turn, all coming together into palettes of gorgeous shimmering colour.

This is the wonderfully friendly group that participated in the class with a view of all the amazing and unique art that was created. Megan volunteered to be behind the camera for this one, but at least her canvas wasn’t camera-shy.

Ps: We’ve decided that we can squeeze a couple of extra people into the Scrapware Spectacular with Linda in the evening of Thursday 27th May. If you’d like to create some delicious textural, wearable pieces like those you see on Linda’s blog, send the shop an email or give us a call on Tuesday.

Full description and step by step images to come.

Step one – Apply gesso with a palette knife so that some areas are thicker than others.

Step two – heat with embossing heat tool/paint stripper gun on low setting. Keep moving the heat around the piece until the gesso starts to form a skin on top and blister up.

Step three – using a clean piece of paper, press down on the bubbles to squish them down. You may need to protect your hands from the heat, the surface will be hot hot hot.

Step four – paint!

step five – you can add another colour of paint over the top, and wipe some away to highlight the texture. rub’n'buff will also highlight the texture beautifully.

You can see one example of this technique in the image below.

Where has the year gone?

I seem to say that every year (don’t we all?) and it’s always a reminder about how precious each and every moment is.

Mum and I have had a lot to deal with in the last couple of months, dealing with Nana’s illness and squeezing in as much time with her as we could before she passed away.

In previous years we have closed the store only for a few days over the chrissy break – reopening between boxing day and new years eve. This is going to be a tough christmas for our family, and Mum and I have decided that we are going to take this opportunity to have a short break, spend some time together and prepare for the new year.

Our last day of trading for 2009 will be Wednesday 23rd December.
We will reopen on Tuesday 5th Jan 2010.

We wish you all a very merry christmas, and hope that you will take the christmas holidays as an opportunity to spend some time with your loved ones. Time really does fly.

Hi everyone.

I wanted to post here to apologise for our absences and early closes over the last couple of weeks. We recently received some terrible news about my Nana (Lorri’s Mum) and have been by her side ever since.

What we originally thought was a pulled muscle in her back was actually the first signs of a lung cancer that had moved to her bones – the pain had been building for 4-5 months and then we finally demanded some more scans be done to see what the problem really was after the escalating doses of pain-killers weren’t having any effect.

Unfortunately things are not looking good for Nana, the cancer is now throughout her body and her brain and there isn’t any treatment that will fix it. She’s currently undergoing radiation treatment in the hopes that it might bring the pain down a little – and pain management is the only important thing for her at this stage.

As I’m sure you will understand, receiving such a devastating diagnosis for a member of your immediate family is quite a shock, and we’re all doing our best to support each other through a difficult time.

I will be back at the store tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd Nov) to open as normal. And I will also make arrangements for our friends to watch the store for us when Mum and I are otherwise engaged to minimise the inconvenience for our customers.

Thanks for your understanding.
-Bec

How to: Create a shabby, worn-paint background with acrylic paints.

Some of my favourite sources of inspiration are old buildings and signs with layer after layer of paint peeling away to show other colours underneath. With nothing but some acrylic paints, water and sandpaper we’ll create a well worn, shabby looking background without waiting for years for time to do it’s magic.

Start out by covering your background surface with one or two colours of acrylic paint. I’m working on a pre-cut ATC base by Scrapware.

You don’t need to be precious about how you apply the paint, just slap it on quickly – if you leave it thick it will take longer to dry, so because I’m impatient, I usually work with lots of thin layers. To start with I used a bright yellow and pink…

Once that’s dry, grab your next colour and give it another coat, not going quite all the way to the edges this time. I’ve used a watered down orange…

Then another quick coat of bright green…

See that little bit of crackle detail? An accidental product of impatience by heating the paint with an embossing gun to dry it quicker. We’ll go into crackle effects in another tutorial.

Once that’s all dry, add another colour. (Teal in this case) I applied this layer a little thicker than the others, and again, not quite all the way to the edges.

Extra tip – Uneven coats of paint create great textural effects. When an uneven coat of paint is partially dry, flip your card over onto a clean piece of paper. The not-quite-dry paint that was applied thicker should lift away in places revealing some of the colours from underneath.
This step isn’t essential for the technique, but can be fun to play around with.

Once the teal is dry, another coat of pink (which looks purple because of the teal underneath) goes on smoothly. Give it a few seconds to dry a little, then flick the painted surface with water. I like to do a series of small flicks from a paintbrush first, and then one medium sized ‘puddle’. Use a babywipe or paper towel in a dabbing motion to soak up the water (and wet paint). This will allow the colour to show through from underneath.

Once the last layer of paint is mostly dry, grab your sandpaper and sand through the layers of paint so that the underlying colours show through. It can be easier on your arms if you dampen either the painted surface or the sandpaper first, then you’ll need less pressure to get the paint up.

Now you’ll have a shabby, colourful, worn looking background ready to create on.
