The story of Scott Pilgrim is one filled with teenage angst and puppy love, which is a dangerous combination. Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. The one that he really yearns for is Ramona, and in order to win her love he’ll have to fight all her psycho ex-boyfriends. She literally has a crew of guys who make it their business to keep all interested suitors at bay, which means Pilgrim has to cut through a lot of red tape.

These two high resolution photos feature Michael Cera as the title character as well as a black and white animated version of Pilgrim. The film hits theaters on August 13, 2010 and co-stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Johnny Simmons, Ellen Wong, Allison Pill, and Mark Webber. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is based on the graphic novel of the same name and also stars Brandon Routh, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Evans.

VOTD: Ben Stiller on Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis

Ben Stiller is currently promoting his latest film, Greenberg, and what better way to do that than on the Funny or Die staple, “Between Two Ferns.” It’s a pseudo talk show that literally takes place between two plants, with Zach Galifianakis as the often offensive interviewer. The latest installment of the series features Stiller and Galifianakis going tit for tat with insults…

It’s been a while since Ben Stiller has really given me something to laugh about but his interaction with Zach is hilarious. The interview automatically gets off on the wrong foot when Galifianakis butchers his name and the title of one of his most well known movies, Zoolander. But always the consummate professional, Stiller tries to give as much as he gets, which is a plethora of off the wall and offensive remarks.

The only thing that gets under my skin about this sketch are the moments when both actors talk over each other. It’s something that Galifianakis usually does on the show, but it seemed like he and Stiller were really hamming it up. The “ham” factor was a bit too high for my taste but other than that it’s a pretty decent. Check it out.

Interview: Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning Become The Runaways

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning transform themselves into real life rock legends Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in The Runaways. There’s no doubt about it, these two young vixens give themselves completely to the real life story of becoming of rock star by the age of 14-years-old. Both encompassed the look and the feel of these bad-ass chicks, smashing through stereotypes and being pushed to the edge of their sanity. Dressed in almost nothing, both actors leave their innocent selves behind and become real teenage rock stars.

We were able to catch up with the duo at a roundtable for the film and ask them some questions about becoming The Runways below…

Does every successful actor harbor dreams of being a rock star?

Dakota Fanning: I think everybody has that inner part of themselves that wishes they could perform and be on stage. I’ve definitely had that. I think doing this movie and performing Cherry Bomb and doing the performance scenes is the closest I’ll ever get to those dreams.

How did you capture that Japan performance of Cherry Bomb?

DF: I think just watching the Live in Japan videos of Cherie and getting to know her and realizing that especially Cherry Bomb is like a choreographed dance. She did the same thing each and every time and it was a routine and she did it without even thinking about it. So making that performance like that for me was really important.

How did you capture not only the performance but the character of Joan?

Kristen Stewart: Well, luckily they were so open and enthusiastic and ready to tell the story that we had them as a constant resource so we never felt like we were making anything up because with a story like this, it’s so not your normal experience on a movie. Usually you get to sort of on the fly or in rehearsal, create something. This was not that so the fact that they were there and so sort of open and awesome made it a lot easier, but both of them are really hard characters to play actually, because you meet them and they’re so dynamic. They’re just really big personalities. You hope to capture an essence because they become your friend and it’s a huge responsibility.

What are some lessons you took from them that will carry on the rest of your life?

DF: Wow, I think it’s really tough because I feel like when they become your friends, they just keep giving you stuff every day. I talk to Cherie a lot. She just says little things that kind of inspire me and I remember and are important to me. Something that relates to the movie is her sacrifice at the end of the film. She sacrificed everything that she loves and this career because she knows that she’s not going to make it much longer if she continues on this downward spiral and she’s not really equipped for the lifestyle that she’s been leading.
KS: And Joan is.
DF: So that just taught me a lot about what she gave up. I don’t know if I could give it up when faced with that. She just was so courageous in that decision. That was really inspiring to me.

How did you first get involved? Did Joan come to you?

KS: I read a script and just was very pleased that they wanted me to be a part of it. I met Joan after I got the part and it was so scary because it sort of felt like this is the meeting that either fires me or keeps me on. My hair was still long. I was about to do New Moon. I sort of felt like she was going to look at me and go, “What makes you think…?”

When you have people who are so accessible, what’s the advantage of knowing them besides being able to ask them questions? Do you work harder or is it easier?

DF: I think it becomes easier. I think it becomes a lot easier and definitely the way I wanted it to be and I was just really happy that both of them supported the film and liked making the film because I just think that would be really horrible if they didn’t obviously.
KS: Especially, I mean this is just an interesting thing, they’re public figures. So we could have made this movie regardless. They covet this thing and us to a certain degree which sort of is like everything you could ever hope for.

The treatment floated around for 30 years in Hollywood. Is there a sense of destiny when the scripts find you?

KS: For me, it always has to be, and I know Dakota is sort of the same deal. You can’t do something so ridiculous as to play another person in a movie for pretend, unless it speaks to you in a certain way and you feel like it’s worth it. You take something from every character you play. You get to use their lives sort of like – - and in this case, considering – - there’s a million reasons why this movie is cool but there is an indescribable thing that fills you with the thought that you can actually do it. Because there’s a lot of scripts that I read that like oh, it’s my age for a role, but I can’t play that part. I don’t have that in me. I guess it could be considered, I don’t know, kismet. It’s in the stars.

How familiar were you with the music before?

DF: I was familiar with Joan Jett. I didn’t know who the Runaways were and I wasn’t familiar with Cherie, as I think a lot of people our age are not familiar with The Runaways, which is kind of weird now thinking back because they were like the first all girls rock n’ roll band.
KS: Literally, which is a weird thing to think. I didn’t really consider that a whole lot when we were making the movie.

A lot of musical biographies deal with drugs and alcohol and it can be exciting for actors to play. Was it important to you that that wasn’t the total focus of this movie?

DF: Definitely. I think that there’s so much intense subject matter in the movie but it’s just all kind of there. It doesn’t focus on one particular thing and I think that’s what makes it the whole story. Especially for Cherie because she really gets into the whole drug thing and ultimately can’t get out of it and is not equipped to deal with it. So that’s kind of a part of her but it doesn’t define her in a way. I didn’t want it to be like the only thing about Cherie is that this happened to her. It was just another thing that makes up who she is today.

Was there any discovery about life in the valley back then versus now?

DF: Yeah, I mean I’m not from L.A. I’m from Georgia. But yeah, I live there and I go to school there. It’s funny because I was reading Cherie’s book which the script’s kind of based on it. She had a really big car accident at what is now Twains, at Coldwater and Ventura which I see every day. She had like a near death car accident there. I was reading that and I was thinking like, “Okay, I drive by there every day. That is so…” There are so many things, like the rehearsal trailer was on Ventura Blvd. which is we’re pretty much all on Ventura Blvd. at some point. So there are so many things that we probably drive by every single day we don’t know that they’re so historic to this story and this time.

Is this the first R-rated movie you’ve each done?

DF: No, not really.
KS: Not at all actually.

Are there some scenes you warn your parents not to watch? Is it weird?

DF: I mean, one of the first movies I’d ever done was pretty intense subject matter and my parents have kind of gotten used to it by now I guess. They know it’s just acting.
KS: Do you find that it’s gotten easier because I find that it has. Seriously, I was more nervous about it when I was younger and it was like a slow wearing down of like okay, Kristen’s going to do what she’s going to do. She’s just going to do these movies. Not that they were against it, just that projection I took away from them. I sort of didn’t care anymore. I was like, “Are you guys cool with this?”

Joan said the chick better like Suzie Quatro. Do you?

KS: I do now. That’s what’s cool about this movie. I did not know Suzie Quatro. Joan loves music. I know most of her – - she loves the Stones, she loves stuff like that I know but Suzie Quatro’s great.

They released 10 seconds of the Eclipse trailer. What should we be excited for in the full one?

KS: I don’t know, I haven’t seen it.
DF: We were supposed to watch that.
KS: We were supposed to watch that at lunch.

What are you excited for in Eclipse?

DF: I’m in it a few scenes. I filmed only for a little bit but I’m excited for it. I think it’ll be really good.

Jason Statham, Ben Foster in The Mechanic Trailer

Among all the crazy new info that’s popped up online during ShoWest and SXSW, somehow a trailer for Jason Statham and Ben Foster’s new film slipped through the cracks. Don’t get me wrong, I heard about The Mechanic months ago but there was no countdown for the trailer which apparently was released today. What’s up with that?

The Mechanic is a remake of the seventies action film that starred the late Charles Bronson (Magnificent Seven alum woot woot!). The story centered on a former hitman who takes a youngster under his wing as an apprentice in the game of death (no pun intended). The student in question is played by Foster, while Donald Sutherland stars as his father and Statham’s handler. The Mechanic will be directed by Simon West and is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 15, 2010.

Before viewing the trailer you should know there are some shots that are NSFW. Other than that, this looks like a standard Jason Statham action flick, but Foster is the selling point for me. His character is the only one that doesn’t seem one dimensional, plus he’s a talented actor. Check it out for yourself…

Hank Azaria is The Smurfs’ Gargamel

“How I Met Your Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris was the first actor to be named as the live action lead in the CGI animated feature, The Smurfs. According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, veteran television and film star Hank Azaria has also landed a meaty role playing none other than the devious Gargamel.

It was exclusively reported that Azaria will lend his vocal talents to the Smurf villain, which isn’t foreign territory for the actor. He’s been voicing multiple characters on the Fox series, “The Simpsons” for over two decades so this is like second nature. Joining him in the cast are Alan Cumming and George Lopez who will play Smurfs, while singer Katy Perry will star as Smurfette (a role I find too fitting). Also, if you’re a fan of “Glee” you’ll be able to catch Jayma Mays, who plays guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on the show, to appear as Harris’ pregnant wife.

Sony Pictures declined to comment on the recent casting announcements but we’re pretty sure they’re legit. The Smurfs will be directed by Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), and will center on a happy expectant couple’s lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures. The film is expected to begin production next month and will be set in New York City’s Central Park.

New Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher Killers Posters

If you’re still reeling over that amazing (sarcasm) trailer for Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher’s latest film, Killers you’re in luck. We’ve got two new theatrical posters that have been released for the film that shows both actors trying their best to look inconspicuous. But you have to ask yourself, how is that possible when they’re both tall, lean, and have perfect beach hair? Check out the two glossy one sheets below…

Killers centers on a recently single woman who meets the man of her dreams while on vacation with her parents. She eventually begins to date they guy and they fall in love, the only problem is he has a shady occupation that involves bullets flying ever so often. Her idyllic life turns to shambles once she and her new boyfriend realize their neighbors have been contracted to kill them. Besides Kutcher and Heigl, the cast includes Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara as Heigl’s parents.

I’m getting a Risky Business vibe from these Killers posters but without the cult appeal. The film is directed by Robert Luketic and is scheduled for a summer release of June 4th. It will be interesting to see how this film holds up against Get Him to The Greek and Marmaduke, which also open that weekend.

ShoWest 2010: Final Night Awards Will Go To…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying ShoWest, they premiere a lot of great new footage and movies, but when it comes to their award system, it does feel a bit… staged. Much like how before Toy Story 3, John Lasseter joked about loving the fact that every time he makes another movie ShoWest comes up with an award for him. A number of these “honors” seem more like a popularity contest for upcoming films than actual career achievements. But hey! They got Zach Galifianakis listed as “Best Comedy Actor” so they can’t be completely wrong.

See how the rest of this year’s winners stack up…

I honestly can’t stand behind Katherine Heigl winning Female Star of the Year. None of her films have been that great, and she’s barely been on “Grey’s Anatomy” this season. Sam Worthington has been steadily working over the past year so his Male Star of the Year award seems warranted as does Todd Phillips directing honor. Seriously, The Hangover was that guy’s golden ticket wasn’t it? He’s has a Golden Globe award for goodness sake.

Lee Daniels Hires David Oyelowo to Play Martin Luther King Jr.

Academy Award nominated director Lee Daniels is hard at work on his next film, a civil rights drama entitled, Selma. Two major castings have already been made, one being Hugh Jackman and the other his Precious star Lenny Kravitz. According to Reuters, he’s hired another actor to play one of the most influential men of the 20th century, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The name David Oyelowo may not sound familiar but it will soon enough. The British actor has landed the role as civil rights activist and African American pioneer Martin Luther King Jr. The actor previously appeared in the 2008 made for television version of A Raisin in The Sun, and he’ll pop up in George Lucas’ WWII drama, Red Tails. He won’t be the only freedom fighter in Selma, because he’ll be starring alongside Kravitz’ character Andrew Young another man fighting for change.

Jackman on the other hand will star as a racist sheriff in the film that centers on “the historic marches staged by King in 1965 in Selma, Alabama.” The role of George Wallace, the Alabama Governor is still awaiting an actor to fill its void. The movie is currently being shopped around for financing, which is unfortunately on shaky ground.

Originally Pathe International was on board but we’re hearing they might scale back their involvement. Why would they do that? This is a movie that has an Oscar nominated director, an award winning singer, and Hugh Jackman! Everyone loves Hugh. Maybe they’re concerned about the content or the harshness of the performances? Who knows.

What do you think about Oyelowo’s casting as Dr. King? Who would you have put in that role?

Conan O’Brien’s Comedy Tour For a Documentary?

Conan O’Brien hasn’t wasted any time trying find new and exciting things to do since his departure from “The Tonight Show.” The comedian, writer, and former host has decided to hit the road on a comedy tour that will allow him to interact with fans and have a little fun at the same time. According to a report from Deadline, his latest venture might even be recorded and produced as a feature length documentary.

Mike Fleming is hearing that O’Brien’s 30 city live comedy/music revue entitled “The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour” will be the source material for a film. Media Rights Capital are currently looking to find a financier and Rodman Flender is in talks to direct. Tickets for his shows have been selling like hotcakes so we know there’s still interest in Conan and his wacky antics.

Another plus side to this revue is the income it will generate for O’Brien’s former staff. When he received his 33 million dollar settlement from NBC, he gave 12 million to his staff and he’s been helping them get back on their feet since they were let go from the show. Many of them uprooted from their New York homes, and took their kids out of school to follow the host to LA only to get the shaft. This documentary sounds like a good idea, and I really hope it works because these people need any gig they can get.

First Look At Dwayne Johnson in Faster

After the dismal family comedy Tooth Fairy, Dwayne Johnson is ready to head back to his action oriented roots. For months we’ve been hearing about his return to fighting form in the George Tillman Jr. directed, Faster. The movie has everything we’d want in an action flick, fast cars, criminals, aggressive cops, and a 6 foot 4 former wrestler. Check out the first photo of Johnson as an ex-con who just doesn’t give a damn…

The story for Faster centers on an ex-con hell bent on avenging his brothers death. Johnson will play a character named Driver, while Billy Bob Thornton will star as a veteran cop who trails him as he races to settle with those responsible for his brother’s murder. Also in the mix is Killer, an egocentric hitman who’s after Driver.

The film also stars Maggie Grace, Moon Bloodgood, and Carla Gugino, which seems like a lot of women for just one guy. We do know that Gugino will play a cop, but the other two actresses characters are anybodies guess. Until we can find out more about them, lets take a nice hard look a Dwayne Johnson in a tank top, handcuffs, and in jail.

ShoWest 2010: Scott Pilgrim vs The World Poster

A lot of amazing posters have popped at this year’s ShoWest and the latest is for Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. The movie stars Michael Cera as the title character and he’s also featured in one of the standees that’s been released on the convention floor. Take a look…

This ShoWest poster features Cera rocking out while standing over a tag line that says, “An epic of epic epicness.” I have to admit that I’m still waiting for the big reveal of all the psycho ex-boyfriends but this is a good place to start. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is scheduled to hit theaters on August 13, 2010.

Rose McGowan Cast in Conan

Just when you thought Rose McGowan’s dreams of starring in a barbaric themed action movie were over, she gets cast in Conan. According to Variety, the actress will round out the crew of Marcus Nispel’s remake of the 1982 film, which currently includes Jason Momoa, Stephen Lang. Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman, Leo Howard, and Said Taghmaoui.

According to the trade, McGowan won’t be appearing as the female soldier Red Sonja, a character the actress has been previously attached play. Instead she’ll be one of the bad guys. Her character is a half-human, half-witch which means she might have plenty of scenes with Lang who’s been tapped to play the villain, Khalar Singh.

It’s hard to think about McGowan starring in this film without Red Sonja. Both properties are directly connected to one another. The one plus side to this is knowing that she won’t be the main love interest in the film. That honor will go to Nichols who plays Tamara. I just don’t feel like watching another movie with McGowan pouting and overly sexualizing herself. At least here we might have a chance to see her play a simple, cold-hearted bitch and I’m fine with that.
