Mashable filled out its Oscars coverage with a real-time discussion between reporters and readers about social TV trends they’d seen emerge over the year. One of their liveblog polls found that one in five of its readers were using at least two or more devices (in addition to TV) while watching the show.

In an article about social TV at the Oscars, Mashable writes:

“From the official Oscar.com Backstage Experience to special promotions and activities from entertainment checkin services and second screen companies, the biggest award show of the year is taking big steps towards being more social and digital.” Read on for a nice analysis of what the Academy is doing.

Like Mashable, other Scribble clients pulled their audience into their coverage. Variety.com kept readers engaged by publishing a steady stream of polls — perfect for a night spurred by predictions and ‘I-told-you-so’s. Its editors also used Scribble’s LiveArticle feature to keep an up-to-the-second recap of wins throughout the evening.

Other clients pulled in comments from readers, but focussed on producing lots of original content.

The Toronto Star paired its fashion reporter and movie critics to produce a liveblog packed with red carpet gossip and outfit shaming/loving. It also pulled in tweets from The Academy itself.

In addition to high-res photos from its photojournalist, Reuters had its reporters snapping flicks with iPhones and posting to popular social sharing app Instagram — which were published simultaneously to its liveblog. (I particularly enjoyed the Dictator gif it published).

Meanwhile, Yahoo UK & Ireland hosted a liveblog produced by the Press Association on its home page. This allowed the news company to harness the talent of the Press Association’s photographers, who provided beautiful high-res photos in real time (all the better to gossip over).

Founded in 2011, Next Jam brings people jam band news and reviews.

And one of the ways they’re doing it is through liveblogs.

On Feb. 20, the media site created a liveblog following the performance of Umphrey’s McGee from the Canopy Club in Urbana, IL. Using photos and pulling in Tweets from readers, Next Jam was able to chat about everything at the concert from the musicians wigs to the temperature in the club.

Also, just before 2012 began, the site covered Phish’s four-night run at Madison Square Garden using ScribbleLive, creating a liveblog for the first few days and a separate liveblog for New Year’s Eve.

The Montreal Gazette also tried their hand at a Kanye West and Jay-Z performance in November.

And who can forget liveblog coverage of this year’s Grammys? Reuters was just one of the outlets covering the music awards show in real time.

Derrick Goold is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s baseball writer. On his blog (brilliantly named Write Fielder), he writes about a class project from his journalism school days, where students had to immerse themselves in a story over a series of months.

Goold opted to follow a politican on campaign. He writes: “My story was richer (I hope) and it was certainly longer (I admit) because my experience within the campaign colored and powered my writing.

But what service did that immersion provide to readers? ”Did I really take a reader into the campaign or did I just describe what it was like there?” he asks.

Enter Scribble. “ScribbleLive gives me, just another newspaper guy, the ability to provide visual coverage — as it happens,” he writes.

Goold’s been testing out the platform for his spring training coverage. ”For a team like the St. Louis Cardinals, spring training happens far away from its nucleus of fans and relatively out of sight compared to regular-season games. The Cardinals have a ravenous fan base to start with, and because spring training happens far away, with limited access to video or info save for the half dozen beat reporters in place there, the craving for information is insatiable.”

Goold’s end product: a multimedia extravaganza with pictures and videos of interviews with management and players. “The interview with John Mozeliak was processed and posted before his presser with the media had ended, meaning readers who were watching this stream of info were watching Mozeliak talk about the camp minutes after he said the words. I shot video of the first official bullpens thrown by Wainwright and Chris Carpenter, and within minutes our readers at StlToday.com were watching the same thing from the comfort of their homes or on their mobile phones. Throughout the process, I was able to answer questions from readers or offer news as it happened.”

Goold wants to flip immersion journalism around: why not immerse the reader in a story the way journalists traditionally immersed themselves? He calls it experience journalism. And you’re going to see a whole lot more of it.

When news companies started announcing that they would liveblog Whitney Houston’s funeral, there was some pushback from readers. Many people felt personal connections to Houston, and a liveblog was the best way to bring them into the event. Others worried that liveblogging an event as intimate and sensitive as a funeral would be tacky. But, done right, it doesn’t have to be. Plenty of Scribble clients covered the pop star’s funeral with tact and respect.

The CBC, having just launched its brand-new music site, dedicated its home page to its funeral liveblog. The public broadcaster enlisted several reporters to provide quotes from eulogies, some background info for the various speakers and a steady stream of photos and videos from the funeral.

The Globe and Mail provided photos, recaps and videos of the ceremony, along with lyrics from songs that were played. The Globe’s Madeleine White started the blog off with a lenghty post providing the expected itineary, rumours about guests (including Bobby Brown) and information about the burial.

Sky News covered the funeral from the UK, providing readers with plenty of photos and videos, and pulling in reports from NY Daily News reporters that were on the scene. It also pulled in comments and well-wishes from readers, who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to participate in the event.

Liveblogging isn’t just about big media covering international events.

From high-school sports to weather reports, a liveblog is also a great tool to bring information to a community, keeping people informed on local happenings.

Last week, for instance, OpenFile covered a Supreme Court hearing in Halifax about the sale of St. Patrick’s Alexandra School.

The outlet used polls, pulled in Tweets from on-scene reporters and took readers’ comments, creating a dialogue with ScribbleLive while keeping Halifax informed on what was going on behind closed courtroom doors.

OpenFile’s liveblog is just one example of how local news can be covered with real-time media.

Weather reports are a popular way of using liveblogs to create localized content, and Hearst’s stations have been quite keen in this regard.

Over the past few days, WBAL has been keeping its viewers in the know with a liveblog about the Maryland snow forecast. KMBC brought readers in Kansas City information about school closures and roadway problems caused by a storm Feb. 12-14, while KCRA kept readers up-to-date on snow and rain in their Western US region last week.

Some sites opt for general catch-all liveblogs, that update readers on general local news.

The Toronto Star, for instance, runs its “Toronto Now” liveblog every day, giving people traffic and weather updates as well as neat tidbits of news – like the post pictured, which notes the death of hockey and coffee icon Tim Horton on this day in 1974.

Local sport liveblogs are also a popular way to keep readers engaged on news websites.

On Feb. 10, Lee Enterprises wrote about how two different local media outlets covered the Montana High School State Wrestling Tournament using ScribbleLive.

Over the course of two days, the Billings Gazette and the Missoulian worked as a team to cover the event through a liveblog. The outlets were able to take turns reporting, each posting to the liveblog about different parts of the tournament, creating a multi-voiced narrative that followed the story to the finals.

In a cute callout for affirmation, Minnesota Public Radio created a liveblog asking for readers to send in their declarations of support through the Twitter hashtag #mprlove.

Messages like “My life wouldn’t be complete without @TheCurrent @NewsCut @MPRweather” and ”happy valentines day to the love of my ears @TheCurrent !!” should be enough to make even the most hardened liveblog editor smile.

The Globe and Mail was just as susceptible to the love-based posts as MPR, though they approached the holiday with a more scandalous request.

The Canadian daily set up a liveblog with ScribbleLive in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, asking readers to name their favourite steamy books and erotic reads.

With suggestions like the Kama Sutra and Michael Ondaatje’s ”The Cinnamon Peeler,” the lusty list is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Why not try reporting on them through liveblogs?

On Feb. 8, as a part of Bell’s Let’s Talk day, CTV brought in special guests and experts to liveblog about mental health awareness. Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., the television station filled 34 pages with content from readers, writers and guests. Readers were asking questions along with reporters, creating an interactive atmosphere and great discussion.

The Toronto Star ran a live chat about depression and sports with their reporter Randy Starkman and TSN’s Michael Landsberg on the same day. The two reporters discussed their struggles with depression, and fielded questions from the readers.

Liveblogs are also a great tool to bring a fresh view to ongoing issues.

Take WPTV, for instance. The station, based in West Palm Beach, hosted a webinar using their liveblog Jan. 27.

Over the course of an hour and a half, a panel of experts answered viewers’ questions on foreclosures, refinancing loans and how to get out from being “underwater.” Questions via the liveblog – the panel answered using a video live stream pinned to the top.

Nearly half of consumers get their news from mobile devices. To capture those readers, a lot of ScribbleLive’s clients have built custom apps for phones and tablets; some have even incorporated our API — the building blocks of our tool – to push real-time coverage out to readers.

The Seattle Sounders Football Club created an app that includes a real-time component called The Pulse, with live game reports and audience engagement powered by ScribbleLive. (They love Scribble so much they even made a commerical).

Canadian sports network The Score created a slick-looking iPhone app (pictured) that pushes real-time game notifications, reporter play-by-play and fan chats out to readers. They’ve also appointed some fans to become official livebloggers, which means The Score can provide simultaneous liveblogs of every single game it covers — not just the ones its reporters are at.

Every week, Citytv runs liveblogs to accompany episodes of The Bachleor and Bachelorette. Now, with its new Citytv Social Stream iPad app, readers can connect, chat and learn about their favourite shows in real time, otherwise known as the “second screen experience.” The Canadian news organization used ScribbleLive’s API to create an app that alerts readers when new shows are about to start, and lets them chat with other Canadians as they watch. It’s a step beyond the white label liveblogs Citytv runs on its site. There’s a page with bios of the reality shows’ stars, episode previews and a dedicated Scribble-powered live chat page. The app developers even built a feature using our API that allows readers to submit photos right from the comment box. Social Stream also includes Scribble’s polling technology, which has a dedicated page within the app.

Then there’s The Economist. Instead of building an app to capture all of its U.S. presidential election coverage, it built a tablet web version called Electionism.com (pictured at left). It allows readers to flip through pages of stories; liveblogs are given the same real estate other features get. Click through, and you’re presented with a beautiful full-page spread that leads you into the embed version of the liveblog. Keeping with their no-byline rule, reporters log into the liveblog with anonymous avatars in different colours and refer to each other by the colour instead of a name.

The conclusion: If you’re not serving your mobile addicts, you’re missing a significant chunk of your readership.

There are a lot of interesting ways to put your liveblog out to your readers. And it’s easy to make it available in different places, too.

A great example of this is the liveblog about NHL trade deadline rumours put together by Sportsnet.

Their team of journalists used LiveArticle and pulled in Tweets to create an up-to-the-minute feed about what could happen come Feb. 27. Here’s what their white label page looks like.

In addition to the white label, the Sportsnet crew embedded the content on their own page. It’s the same liveblog and information – it just looks a little different.

“The benefits to this are speed and ease of use,” said Sportsnet NHL editor Luke Fox in an e-mail. “It is the quickest way to get information out to hockey fans. The ability to combine multiple forms of media in one page is a bonus: video, images, tweets, articles, commentary, polls, and so on.”

Using LiveArticle‘s separate embed code and placing it on the left, Sportsnet highlighted particular posts, photos and videos. The embed of the liveblog itself was placed in a smaller box on the right, giving people easy access to recent posts.

“On NHL Trade Deadline Day, Feb. 27, we will be using this live article format to cover the day’s flurry of breaking news, giving our readers constant, quick updates and links to all the latest trades, analysis, Twitter activity and original videos we produce,” Fox said.

“It gives the reader an up-to-the-second experience, as the Twitter feed is nearly instantaneous, and uploading breaking news and fresh content to the live article can be accomplished in a fraction of the time it would take to create that piece of content through a traditional CMS.”
