We have seen this band a number of times playing at Sky Music Lounge, and the time has come to shout our accolades for them. Their cover songs range from current radio hits to popular 80’s dance music and even if you don’t like to get out onto the dance floor, they will have you singing along and your feet tapping the beat. Aside from their great renditions of popular songs, the fact that they mingle with the audience between sets, instead of lounging in the green room, says a lot for the band; they appreciate everyone coming out to see them.

Ok, a male, especially myself, cannot deny the sheer beauty and presence of Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson on film…….they are simply to die for…….so now having them both in the same movie, and having them both pretty much sleep around to gain the crown of england…….um, yeah can certainly sign me up for this one. Its the males turn dammit…..all of you women get your chic flicks with a bunch of guys fighting over the love of a woman…..that doesnt happen in real life (sorry to my female readers)…..but this story did, and by god im going to pay 8 dollars to see it unfold.

Now i really have no history or knowledge of this story before i saw this film…..so i was going into this one kind of blind. So i payed real close attention to the storytelling. And i must say that it was done pretty well…….but the only thing that the storytelling lacked was its intensity……there were numerous scenes that could have been brought out in a much deeper sense. For instance, when one sister deceived another……it wasnt told in a horrid manner that had the audience lean back and say “Ohhhhhh damn”…..it was told in a pretty bleak manner. And the sex scenes…..i mean come on. Look, ill be honest…..i was really looking to see some awesome Mid-Evil sex going on here……but there wasnt, yeah sure there was lots of it……but it wasnt gritty or passionate like it should have been…..as sick as that may sound, its the truth…..by them not doing that, i didnt feel the passion as much as i should have, or why he felt one way towards one sister and not the other…..i think if they did that, it really would have shot this movie off.

Acting wise…..i was very impressed with Ms. Johansson……because i have seen some of her roles in the past, and i must be honest….they were not that splendid……but she did a fabulous job in this one. Eric Bana could of used a little more screen time……all the scenes that he was in were great……but he was hardly in the movie……and the scenes he was in, he barely spoke. But as far as acting……Natalie Portman, once again stole the show……my god this woman has both beauty and talent, im telling ya…..and this is not the first, second, or third time she has impressed me.

Bottom Line, yeah it was pretty damn good, the story is very dark and mischievous……..i dont know how historically accurate it is, but it was told somewhat well……..i really think that the directing could have been way better to show the glorified and deceitful scenes in the film, because there certainly were a lot. But truthfully, i really do not think this movie would have been possible without scarlett and natalie…….not only was their acting fantastic, but there is no way in hell you would have bought the story if they looked any less beautiful than these two. Yeah, it was pretty damn good…..you know how i love these adultery type movies…..so this one was good in that category, but nowhere near the best.

I felt like i have seen this before. A conspiracy behind some elected official who gets shot in public. So why would i go and see another one of these films? Two reasons…..first you cannot deny the actors that are in this movie…..Mathew Fox, Sigorney Weaver, Forrest Wittaker, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt…….and they are all great actors in my opinion……and second, they have never used the president as the one who is being shot in a movie……its always some senator or some congressmen…….so maybe this change, should turn around something different.

Now the first thing that i must talk about is the editing…..which is awesome. It is not super different…..i have seen it before…..but it was just done in a different manner. Once you see the standpoint of one person viewing the president being shot…..they rewind it back to the beginning, and start over with someone else’s view of the situation. Yeah, its nothing spectacular, and it is somewhat different…..but the reason that it is a cool different is that the story is like a puzzle, and by rewinding the story and starting it over again, you get more pieces to that puzzle…….so not only was the cinematography and storytelling cool…..the editing made it even more enjoyable to watch.

But other than that, the movie wasnt mind blowing. The story line started out ok……but then they threw in all of these plot points that i never really understood. And the main one was around the terrorist group……they never even bothered to tell us why they wanted to kidnap the president…….and isnt that suppose to be the basis of the story? And some of the actions by the main characters were never fully explained either. I dont know, there were just way too many plot holes and twist towards the second half of the movie…….and then when it was all over……you kind of felt like you deserved more out of it…….because the story started off pretty damn well…….but then started to spiral out of control…….i think that if they brushed up on the last half, it really could have saved this movie.

Bottom Line, yes it is like every other movie you have seen like it before. Same scenario with the plot holes and semi action packed sequences……..i could seriously watch this movie again and point out how many scenes they somewhat stole from other films. And i think they put this movie together way too quickly, because it could seriously of been developed so much better…..you could see it in the cinematography and editing……..i dont know, youll just leave the theatre thinking that it was alright……in a couple of months, you will even forget about it…….it will just blend in with the other movies that are like it.

Michel Gondry has already directed one of my favorite movies of all time, “Eternal Sunshine”…..and now he comes along with an idea that really relates to the whole film idea in this generation, with all the youtube and cheaply made videos that millions of people have posted on the internet. I must admit, i have made a few myself……and through the eyes of Michel Gondry…..this already sounds like it will be something great.
So in case you have not seen the preview and know nothing of the story…..let me run it down for you…..Mos Def and Jack Black are in charge of a video store, and by some freak accident…..all the video tapes got erased, and since they do not have the funds to buy all the tapes back, they come up with the idea to re-shoot all of the movies themselves and allow them to be rented by customers. Now the movie starts off in a weird way……it is kind of bleak and boring, and does not feel like a Gondry movie with its cheesy music and normal cinematography……..but once the plot of the movie is finally established is when the film begins to take flight, and feel more like a Gondry film.
The Cinematography in this movie was not Gondry’s best…..but it was still different in that gritty cheaply made sense that is very fun to watch. But the best parts of this movie easily have to be the sequences when they begin remaking the movies…..especially when they make ghostbusters……i almost wanted to cry in laughter, as did everyone else in the theatre. But throughout the entire movie, i had a smile on my face…..yeah it was in laughter, but it was much more than that……it certainly gives you a warm fuzzy feeling that is so wanted…..but there was a time when i caught myself smiling for almost an hour.
Now the acting by Mos Def was alright…..Jack Black obviously stole the show…..but i think that it was the overwhelming power of the story that made them both act pretty well…….because the movie does have its weird parts in the beginning…..but the movie as a whole is nothing short of brilliant.
Bottom Line, this movie is fantastic. This is seriously what entertainment is all about. All this film does is remind us of why we love movies so much……and it takes a step back and show us that we dont need all the money and explosions to give us entertainment in a movie. And i dont care what you have to say about the movie, but the one thing you cannot deny is that this movie has heart and soul…….and if you have any appreciation for movies at all, then you will certainly adore this film…….because i definitely did. Dont be taken by the rough start, because after a while, the movie starts to gain momentum……and when it does, oh man it never lets up. And i know it s a little early to say, but i really think that this movie will remain in my top 10 movies of 2008……and if it doesnt, then it will certainly stay close.

Two of my favorite series of all time when it comes to movies…..is Batman, and Star Wars. Now why would i be telling you this? Well first because this movie was written by David S Goyer…..the man who wrote Batman Begins and Blade. And second, because you got Anakin Skywalker as the leading role. Truthfully, after looking at the preview, it didnt look that appealing to me….but David Goyer can suprise me.

Now the story is alright….some parts are pretty cool. They take a great approach to the whole teleporting idea…..you know, a kid on the run….nowhere to go, so he steals from a bank…..something that some of us might do if we had this power……and they did a great job of showing the whole teleporting deal on the screen. Especially the fight sequences……oh man, they were very entertaining to watch.

But that was pretty much all the film had to offer. The story began to start off somewhat promising……but it all came to a hault when they started the whole love interest story, which was horrid to watch. Picture this…..boy meets girl in high school, then disappears, comes back 8 years later and says “You want to go to Rome with me”…..so she says Ok…..and bam, they are together now……..it may sound stupid, but i assure you its not…..its way worse then that. And once that came into play…..the whole jumper idea began to crumble as well. I really wanted to know what the whole history of it…..who were these bad guys, and why do these people want to kill the jumpers so badly?…..and they touched on it, for maybe a second, and that was it, because guess what……here comes the girl to break everything up again……i think that if they cut her out of the movie…..it really would have made a better film.

Now the acting could of used some work. Hayden Christisian (Anakin Skywalker) isnt really the best actor in the world, and i cant hate him because he is anakin…..he did alright….but there were some scenes that were just really bad to watch when he was in it.

Bottom Line, this movie certianly had its entertaining parts with its fantastic cinematography and special effects that did nothing short of dazzling the eye. But the story just didnt stay up right with its character drive and story line. Normally when David S Goyer introduces a female character, she never harms the story….i was suprised to see this from him…..i dont know…..yeah, it was entertaining…..but not good…..youll get your moneys worth in the action scenes….but as far as a movie as a whole……no way, not this one.

Ever since Lord of the Rings….Hollywood has been searching for the next big epic story……so they are looking through numerous books, trying to find an answer. And to be quiet honest, they havent even come close. I mean the closest that they have gotten, is probably The Chronicles of Narnia. I mean hell, the movie grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide…..so why not try to follow in the footsteps of that movie…..so here comes Spiderwick.
Now in order to have a complete fantasy type movie, the main thing you need is a deep story, that everyone can follow with ease, that holds numerous ammounts of creatures that fascinate the eye and mind. This story had some of those, but they were done in a very childish manner, so there were scenes that made it really hard to get into the movie because of that element. But as far as the story…..yeah it was pretty good.

The whole story is about a book that unlocks secrets to a hidden world with creatures…..and you never really get to read the book along with the main character. Which is really upseting……because all of these things are happening, and you dont know why……and the kid, out of nowhere has a solution, because he was the only one who read the book. I didnt like that because i like to know what is in front of me…..especially when it comes to fantasy type movies…….they are suppose to take me away to a world that i do not know, so they better do a damn good job of explaining everything to me. They did that, and yes some parts were really entertaining…..but some parts had you squinting your eyebrows saying “Wha?”
And since there are lots of child actors in this movie, you have to expect some pretty bad acting……and this movie had some……we are not working with haley jole or drew barrymore here……..it was just wrong.
Bottom Line, yeah, it was an alright movie…..but not even close to touching the fantasy realm like some other films in its past. There are some actually pretty violent parts in this movie for it to be rated PG…..but that really didnt amplify it that much. Yeah, this movie can entertain you…..but you will only leave the theatre saying to yourself “Eh, it was alright i guess”. If your looking for an awesome fantasy type movie, i dont think that everyone will find it here…..i didnt at least. I promise you though, if you do see, you will forget about it in about a month…….its just getting swept under by all the fantasy movies they keep pumping out.

Ever since the movie The Ring came out a few years ago, there has been this trend of remaking classic Japanese horror films the american way. Which is either a hit or a miss……because the ones that miss, usually tend to suck really bad. But this remake is actually held up as one of the best horror films ever made in Japan……and those Japanese know their shit when it comes to horror.

Ok, first i am going to go through all the things that i did not like from the movie, because there are a lot. First off the acting is pretty bad. Jessica Alba narrating a story really isnt the best move in the whole world……yeah, just try and picture her telling the back bone of a story at the intro to a movie. But once again, she was flawless to look at…..but to even me, that still doesnt get you anywhere. And the majority of the actors that were in this are some actors that you would find playing sidekick roles in some action film that you saw a while back……for instance, Parker Posey……seriously, can that girl just get a clue and stop acting.

Now before i saw this movie, i did a little research on the original, since it is impossible to find at your local blockbuster……but after reading the story to the original, and then seeing this…..it makes me want to cry at how poorly this was written and told. It was just so americanized. Why is it that almost every american horror film has to have some sort of resolution to ever evil? Cant things just be evil for a reason? There isnt always a way out, and frankly, if you are dealing with something as horrible as hell, i really dont think that there would be a way to beat the system.
But the only thing that i did like in this movie, and it goes the same with every Japanese horror remake……is the creepy eerie images. That is something that i love in horror movies…..and japanese horror films never seem to miss in that department. Now this movie maybe had a few……but that was it. Nothing that was good enough to save this dud.

Bottom Line, im sure you guys have already heard how bad this movie was, so let me go ahead and chime in and say that yeah, it is pretty damn bad. Completely over the top dramatic sequences that are really uncalled for, cheesy acting, horrible story line…..it felt like something that you would see on the lifetime channel late at night…..and i can promise you that one day you will see it one there. So if you are in the mood for a good horror film, then stay far away from this one, because you wont find it here……im starting to feel sorry for the japanese film makers now.

How can you even deny the awesome power of Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Two actors who alone, can over power a movie with their acting abilities. I can assure you that at least one of these actors is in one of your top 10 favorite movies of all time…..and i am sure that one of these reasons that the movie is there is because of their acting. So seeing that these two dynamic actors are in the same movie, i just had to catch a glimpse of what is in store.

To some people, the story to this movie made seem cliche’ after only watching the preview. To others, it may seem heart warming. But for me, it was very entertaining to watch. The story takes off quiet quickly, and very simple…..hell you see it in the preview. Two guys at the end of their rope, doing all the things they wished they could have done in life…….and when you watch them doing this…..you cannot help but bring a smile to your face when you watch these two old men just cut loose like a bunch of teenagers.

And what made it so much more entertaining, was not the incredible things that they were doing……but the acting that brought it out.  Yeah sure there were some cliche’ parts, and some weird dialogue……but the majority of it was once again, entertaining. You can sense that some parts of the dialogue were pretty good…..but there is nobody who could have brought it out the way it should of been quite like Nicholson and Freeman.

Now the only small problem that i had with the movie was that i wish i could of seen the whole list thing develop a little more……you know, see them writing the things that they wanted to….rather than them skydiving one minute, and the next they are driving a mustang……i think they should have taken their time a little more on the incredible things they were doing. Sure it was very cool and fun to watch……but it could have been brought out on a much deeper scale……but dont get me wrong, it was still told very well.

Bottom Line, this movie was very entertaining…..i dont care who you are. One cannot help to appreciate this world sometimes, and this movie really brought that out. It had some great morals and heart warming sequences, included with some of that classic Nicholson humor. While watching this, you could not help but think of all the things that you would want to do before you die…..and you leave the theatre thinking the same thing. A very entertaining and good movie…..dont be expecting to see a phenominal movie, but be expecting to get your money’s worth……that is for certain.

Whenever you think of classic action movies, or even classic American bad ass characters…..one of the first names that comes to mind, is Rambo. I mean even the name sounds like someone i wouldnt want to mess with. But truthfully, i am getting a little tired of these failed attempts to bring back the classic action movies…..Die Hard, Aliens, Predator…..these characters are getting a little too old now.

Say when you were a kid, and you watched these awesome shoot em’ up, blow em’ up action type movies…..they were so cool to watch. But when you watch them now…..the story really isnt that great at all, but the action certainly made up for it. The reason that i say this is because this movie has the same feel to it……which is good, because they are keeping the same tempo that the films before it had. The story is alright, but the action is to die for, and it is very gory and very bloody. And when i say gory and bloody, i damn well mean it. Im talking about bullets sawing people in half, bombs blowing chunks out of people, and sniper bullets taking peoples heads clean off……it was bloody good action, and since it is rated R, it definitely is the most violent of them all…..but the story still lacked a little.Yeah, the first Rambo movie, “First Blood”, actually had a pretty good story to it….and is my favorite of the so far trilogy…..but when people think of rambo, they think of the red bandanna, and the shirt off, and stallone pumping round after round with the helicopter machine gun…..and i think this film followed that film more than “First Blood”. But the only problem that i had was that this movie was pretty damn short, and it should have been…..but in that time frame, you never really saw rambo cut loose…..yeah sure, you see him go pretty damn insane, and kick the living shit out of people…..but you want it to be non stop….you want endless amounts of it until your gripping the armrest of your seat until your knuckles turn white.

Bottom Line, your seeing a Rambo movie…..what do you expect, your going to get a somewhat weak story, and awesome action sequences that blow your hair back. And to tell you the truth, i believed what most believed, i thought that it was going to be a pretty dull movie since Stallone is starting to get old, and i really wouldnt of bought the Rambo character again…..but it wasnt half bad…..it did a pretty good job of keeping me entertained. Now dont expect to see the best action movie you have seen in a long while……but do be expected to get your fair share of explosions, violence and entertainment.

One of the most talented actors of our generation has to be Daniel Day Lewis. Sure, when most Americans think of a great actor….the first thing that they say is Johnny Depp. Dont get me wrong, he is phenomenal actor as well…..but every roll that Day Lewis confronts, he literally knocks it straight out of the park…..and seeing him in real life, it is hard to even fathom how that its the same person on screen……and after hearing nothing but rave reviews about this movie, and now an Oscar nod for best actor and best picture, it is certainly worth checking out.

First things first……the acting…….oh my goodness did Daniel Day Lewis do a fantastic job…….again. Now i wouldnt say that it is my favorite performance of his, since Gangs of New York is quite hard to beat……but it was pretty damn good, and i will be expecting him to win for best actor, and if he does not, i will be very upset. I mean this character was written so plain and boring…..you could see it in the writing…..but he just gave this character so much life, and depth…..absolutely stunning. Now as far as the movie is concerned…….the first half is told in a very mysterious, yet eerie sense. It had a very Kubrick/Hitchcock feel to it….which to me of course, was very cool. to elaborate on that more…..it was just plain cinematography, and a plain atmosphere, mixed with some very eerie music…..and it gave you the sense that something terrible was going to happen……but it never really did. Now that may sound stupid, but it wasnt…..it kept you very much into the movie in its weird little way…….but once the first half of the film was over, is when the movie started to decline. It was just that Daniel Day Lewis character started to become angry, and frustrated with everything…..and you really didnt know why……sure they explained it…..but since they never really explained his character that well, you didnt know where it was coming from……i mean the guy was going insane and destroying everything around him……and it left you frowning your eyebrows. Maybe if they kept the same pace that they had in the first half of the movie, and maintained curiosity that everyone was feeling, then it would of been something different, and something great.

Bottom Line, yeah this was a good film…..but this movie was nominated…..and i dont think that it should be. Yeah i think that it should be recognized for its Kubrick like edge, which i loved…….but not to the great lengths that everyone is building it up to be. If you hear someone saying how great they thought this movie was, then sure….that was their take on it…..and im not going to blame them, i can easily see how they would think that…..but i really dont think that everyone would love this movie…..i didnt love it….i didnt think it was great…..i just thought that it was just plain good. But if you want to talk phenomenal and this movie in the same sentence……then you better be talking about the acting and the directing, because both of those are to die for in this movie.
