About Adobe® Digital Editions

Adobe® Digital Editions software offers an engaging way to
view and manage eBooks and other digital publications. Use it to download and
purchase digital content, which can be read both online and offline. Transfer
copy-protected eBooks from your personal computer to other computers or
devices. Organize your eBooks into a custom library and annotate pages. Digital
Editions also supports industry-standard eBook formats, including PDF/A and
EPUB.

Installing Adobe® Digital Editions

Click on Download Now and follow the directions. After
installation, the Setup Assistant wizard prompts you to activate Adobe Digital
Editions (you must be online during this process). During activation, you have
the option to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID. If you don't have an
Adobe ID, creating one is free and only takes a minute. The Adobe ID enables
you to transfer items protected by digital rights management (DRM) between up
to 6 computers or devices and restore them after a data loss or system reinstallation.
Return to Activation Screen and enter your new Adobe ID
(your email address) and password. Visit the Adobe® Digital Editions online library to browse
and download free sample items including complete books as well as preview
chapters from leading publishers.

Your References (APA), Works Cited (MLA), or Bibliography (Turabian) is probably the last thing you do before turning in your paper. Are you tired of cut & pasting or dragging citations so that they are in alphabetical order? There is an easier way. Make Microsoft Word do all the work.

Highlight the text you want to sort

In the Paragraph box on the Home tab, click on the A/Z (Sort) icon

In the Sort Text dialog box, select Sort by: Paragraphs and Type: Text

Ascending order (A-Z) and OK

That should do it. If you see problems, Undo the sort and look for formatting errors. Use the Show/Hide icon (Ctl+*) to show hidden paragraph marks and other formatting symbols.

WARNING: A paragraph mark (what happens when you hit ENTER) will tell Word that that is the end of the citation and will sort each line as a separate entry. Using Hanging Indents to fix this.

Creating Hanging Indents.

Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online web site has been completely revamped.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online web site has been completely revamped. You'll find it quite different from the old site in many ways (new design, new functionality, etc.), but with a strong element of continuity in the form of the editorial content.

The site has been tilted more towards the English language than towards the dictionary as an end in itself. Search results move from simple lists to visualizations/timelines. They can also be filtered according to a number of categories, allowing you to start off with big numbers (e.g. all English words derived from Italian), and reduce them by steps down to small, significant subsets (e.g. all English words derived from Italian from the field of Music which are first recorded in English in the 18th century). That's 167 words, starting with adagio.

Other new features include pages (updated each quarter from the dictionary data) on the OED's most-cited authors and texts, plus links to other online resources—such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography—offering more on those who've shaped the language. There's also an ‘Aspects of English’ section, a series of descriptive articles on language, past and present, which will be updated regularly.

Perhaps the most important new feature involves the Historical Thesaurus to the OED, published in book form in 2009. The entire text is now integrated with the OED Online, so that you can follow semantic links throughout the dictionary. Go to the OED's entry for utopia, for example, and follow the Thesaurus links to the entries for heaven (Old English), Cockaigne (c1305), El Dorado (1596), nonesuch (a1618), Fiddler's Green (1825), never-never land (1900), the Big Rock Candy Mountain (1917), etc. ‘Utopia’ means different things to different people!

As ever, the core of the dictionary is its content. But with the new web site this content is opened up to an extent we couldn't imagine ten years ago when the OED first went online.

George Washington inaugurated the first Thanksgiving day, November 26, 1789, under the new Constitution. Abraham Lincoln made it an official national holiday in 1863 on the fourth Thursday of November.

What follows is George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation from October 3, 1789.

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Go: Washington

I just got a new phone last week and soon realized that there are a whole suite of applications and widgets that I am going to have to investigate if I am going to use more than 20% of its capabilities. It can just do so many things.

Today's libraries are like the new phones. They fulfull their traditional roles and then add more.

Each week I am going to feature a different aspect of our library: databases, websites, techniques for research -- a "more" that you might find useful.

Today's featured resources is: OAIster.

It is described as "A union catalog of more than 19 million records representing digital
resources from more than 1,000 contributors." What this means is that it is a specialized Worldcat.org tool free to locate Open Access digitized books, dissertations, theses, reports, papers, etc.

This subset of Worldcat allows you to search the digital collections on the internet for freely accessible full-text materials on your research topic. This takes you beyond the traditional book, article, website citations in your bibliography/works cited lists and into some interesting sources.

"With the new authority file, users can browse the books of the bible in canonical order and drill down to the chapter, then verse level. Selecting an entry at the book, chapter, or verse level will execute a search for all records indexed with that book, chapter or verse. EBSCO has also added an expanded scripture reference searching for records indexed with a scripture range.

For example, if a user selects Acts in the new scripture authority and drills down through Chapter 1 and elects to search Verse 5, they will return records indexed with Acts 1:5, as well as records indexed with Acts 1:1-11 or Acts 1:1-15:35. .... The old way was a a flat scripture authority file that displayed scripture references in alphabetical order and required users to search for exact scripture references indexed in a given citation."

Go to ATLA Religion Db with ATLASerials & login. Click on the Scripture link (blue bar on top of page). This will open the ATLA Hierarchical Scripture Authority file. If you click on the book of the Bible, e.g. Genesis, the database will search for all articles that are indexed for Genesis. Clicking on [Expand] will take you to more specific chapters, then verses of Genesis. This updated search automatically includes the ranges of Scripture contained within your verse selection.

Creating a bibliography or works cited list is normally the last task for any research paper and predictably the most dreaded. These days tackling the enigmatic style guides (namely APA, MLA, and Turabian) for the correct citation format is made easier (through database generated citations, web-based citation builders & Word 2007) for most types of works. But you can't ditch the style guides entirely...since so many works can have challenging exceptions, such as, multiple publication dates, places of publications or even publishers -- which the style guides will answer.

Citation Style Guide (Library Research Guide)

The library has created a guide for the basic citation formats that you will encounter for APA, MLA and Turabian.

Web-based Citation Creaters

The Citation Machine -- choose APA or MLA, choose from print or nonprint, enter your information and submit.

The Citation Builder -- This is an interesting utility. It generates both a citation for MLA & APA from the same information so that you can compare them.

KnightCite -- by far, my favorite of the "free versions". Select your style (MLA, APA or Turabian), the source type (print/electronic) & the resource (book, article, etc.) and submit.

EasyBib -- an automatic bibliography & citation maker for MLA only (free). You can search for books using the ISBN (how cool is that?) and export the bibliography (Works Cited) to Word. For APA you have to upgrade to MyBib Pro for an annual fee.

BibMe -- while this site requires free registration, it offers citation help for books, magazines, newspapers, websites, journals, film, and other (from interview to encyclopedia). Some interesting features include autofill mode (book, magazine, newspaper, journal, and film) and manual entry mode, a Suggested Further Reading (based upon books in your bibliography), and you can save as many bibliographies as you need. Supports APA, MLA, Turabian and Chicago formats.

MyBibPro -- cites sources according to the latest citation guidelines for APA, MLA and Turabian. MyBibPro offers footnote and parenthetical citation formatting, which can easily be copied and pasted directly into a research paper. If you frequently use electronic databases like EBSCO, you can export your journal citations into MyBibPro list easily. OR If you're citing a book, use the ISBN Autocite feature. Just type in the ISBN and MyBibPro will pull the book's bibliographical data to instantly create a citation. If you have access to the Internet, you can access MyBibPro. There's no download and nothing to install. Having reviewed many of the citation products out there, the College Librarians suggest this citation builder for its overall usability. Cost per year is $8.99.

Book citations

WorldCat.org will generate a book citation for practically every book ever held by a library. You can search for the work by author, title, or ISBN. Once you have located the correct publication, click on Cite This. A screen will open with the book's citation in APA, MLA & Turabian (Humanities).

Go to Google Scholar <http://scholar.google.com> and type in Christian Worldview. In the results list, a book is identified before the title by the prefix [BOOK].

[BOOK] Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview
JP Moreland, WL Craig - 2003 - books.google.com
Cited by 19 - Related articles - Web Search - Library Search

At the bottom of the citation look for the Library Search link. This searches for the book in WorldCat. WorldCat lists the libraries that own the item, including San Diego Christian College. You can enter your location information, like city, state or zipcode and WorldCat will tell you how far (in miles) you are from the nearest library.

Back at the Google Scholar search screen, type in Global Warming. In the results list you will see - Full-Text @ SDCC Library at the end of some of the article titles. This is linked to the library's ArticleLinker (which provides access to full text between different databases). You will need to use your student network login & password. If it doesn't open the article to the full text, look for the ArticleLinker banner at the top of the screen with Missing article?

Under Find Articles | Search for Periodical Titles on the library webpage you might have seen a link for Electronic Journals Service. EJS helps the library manage the single passwords to online subscriptions that come with having print subscriptions to certain journals.

Currently, there are 57 journals (from SDCC & SCS) that include an online subscription (usually through the publisher’s website).

You will need to log in to EJS using your Student Network Account. When you select a journal & you click your way to the publisher’s website, the username & password will be on a banner on the top of the screen. Use this to log in to the website and access the full text.

Please note: the 57 journals full text availability is not listed in the Periodicals Directory at this time. There are still some technical issues that we have to resolve.

If you have any questions or need assistance please contact the library by calling 619-441-2200 x1227 or by email
