Attention Residential Students! - There is a MANDATORY ALL RESIDENTIAL MEETING in the LCC on Wednesday Night, April, 25th @ 9:30 PM. This meeting will cover how to check out of the residence halls, final processes, and how to avoid any check out fines. Attention Sophomores! Registration will be open to all current sophomores beginning on Monday, March 26th. Sophomores may pick up their Registration packets in the Enrollment Services Office.

Also, any Juniors or Seniors who did not pick up their Registration packet should pick up their Registration packets as soon as possible.

Graduating Seniors please fill out the commencement application at sdcc.edu/grad if you have not already done so. All graduating seniors must complete this application prior to March 30th even if they do not wish to participate in the ceremony.

Grant Barrett is co-host of the language-related public radio show A Way with Words, independently produced in and distributed from San Diego and broadcast each week to hundreds of thousands of listeners in the United States, Canada, and around the world.
He is also an American lexicographer and dictionary editor specializing in slang and new words. He compiled and edited the Official Dictionary of Unofficial English (2006, McGraw-Hill) and the Oxford Dictionary of American Political Slang (2004, Oxford University Press), and maintains the prize-winning online Double-Tongued Dictionary which tracks slang, jargon, and neologisms from the fringes of English. He is also a co-founder of Wordnik, an online dictionary.

He has contributed to numerous language reference works and has written about it for such newspapers as the Washington Post and the New York Times. He serves as vice president of the American Dialect Society, an academic organization devoted since 1889 to the study of English in North America. He has been the chair of its New Words Committee, has edited the “Among the New Words” column of the society’s journal American Speech, has served as a member of the journal’s editorial review board, and still helps organize the society’s annual “word of the year” vote.

Formerly, Grant was the engagement editor for voiceofsandiego.org, an innovative nonprofit online-only newspaper. He was responsible for increasing online and offline awareness of its content and bringing community commentary, opinion and insight into its pages.

Grant holds a degree in French from Columbia University and has studied at the Université Paris Diderot. Though born and raised in Missouri, Grant has lived at length in New York City, Paris, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and now lives in sunny California with his wife — a linguist/lexicographer — and their young son.

Flight Team to Region II Championships - The SDCC Precision Flight Team will be traveling to Prescott, AZ on Monday, November 7th to compete in the Region II Collegiate Flying Championships at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The top schools win an invitation to the National Championships at Kansas State University next May. SDCC has competed in the past three National Championships. Making Meaning that Matters:
The Ethical, Reflexive, Contextual, and Practical Heart of Ethnographic Research

All of academe, indeed all knowledge claims, beg the questions “how do we come to know?” and “what is it possible to know?” and “what are the different ways that we can know?” and “if we can know, how can we best represent truth?” Dr. Lisa Gates will deal with these and other questions about knowledge construction and how meaning is enacted and represented through ethnographic research and narrative knowledge. Join Dr. Gates in the upcoming Honors Forum as she highlights key points of the methodological debate in the social sciences, invokes examples of ethnographic research, reveals some of ethnography’s practical applications, and considers some of the ethical quagmires within qualitative research.

Dear SDCC Grads - With about 30% fewer teachers being trained across California since 2005, and 50% of the current teaching workforce over age 50, now is a great time to get your credential! According to a 2005 Center for Teaching and Learning report, “California will likely face a shortage of 100,000 teachers within 10 years….1/3 of California’s teachers are projected to retire in coming years.” This was written 6 years ago, so we could be closer than we think to realizing these statistics. It’s not too late - join our next group starting June 13, or July 18! Financial Aid Awarding and Completion - Be sure to check your school email for information related to Financial Aid awarding and missing documents. Financial Aid cannot be awarded until your FAFSA has been completed and all necessary documents have been submitted to the Enrollment Services office. Some Financial Aid is awarded on a first come, first served basis and will be awarded in the order they were received. If you have questions about your missing documents, contact the Enrollment Services office.

Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 Registration

Registration Chapel - Attend Registration Chapel on Wednesday, March 16th. Students will meet with academic departments to receive important regarding changes in programs, registration procedures, and a preview of the course offerings for 2011-2012. Graduating Seniors will attend a Commencement Meeting at this time. Look for room assignments to be emailed or posted around campus.

Final Clearance for Spring 2011 - All remaining Spring 2011 student account balances must be paid off prior to distribution of registration materials. Login to Empower Web to view your Billing Detail Summary to make sure you do not have an account balance for Spring 2011.

Pickup Registration Materials - Registration materials may be picked up from the Enrollment Services Office during your assigned Registration Week:

Make Appointment with Academic Advisor - An appointment sign-up sheet should be posted  on the door of your academic advisor's office. Appointments must take place during your assigned registration week.

Review Master Schedule - You received a copy of your major-specific master schedule during your first semester at SDCC or when your major was most recently declared. You should update your master schedule when you received your grade report for each semester or add or drop classes. Contact your academic advisor or the Enrollment Services office if you would like to obtain another copy of your master schedule.

Plan - Select courses according to the master schedule for your major and class year. The course schedule may be viewed online through Empower Web. Prerequisites for classes you are interested in taking are listed in the SDCC General Catalog available on the SDCC website. Note: GE math and English requirements must be completed by the end of your sophomore year.

Meet with Academic Advisor - Make sure to bring your registration materials and master schedule to your appointment. Discuss your plans with your academic advisor. Decide on registration and complete registration forms. Obtain advisor's signature on forms. Submit completed forms to the Enrollment Services office by your Registration Deadline.

Spring Break Missions Opportunity At the Tecate Bible Institute, March 6-9 - There is still room to join this Team. Students can use this for the Student Ministry requirement. Contact Whitney or Steve in Student Life for all the details. Staff and Faculty – we are collecting food for the Bible Institute. You can donate large cans of vegetables, fruit or pinto beans. VISION Auditions - Monday, August 30th from 3:30pm-5:30pm in the Music Office. Plan to sing a one minute piece of a song. Rehearsals for VISION are normally held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00pm-5:30pm. VISION ministers locally during the school year in churches and outreach programs through music and drama, and travels abroad during the month of May. Past VISION teams have ministered in Brazil, South Korea, Spain, China, Malawi, Romania, Turkey, Portugal, and most recently Ukraine. Final Exams Policies & Procedures

Early Exams: Approval to take exams before the originally scheduled time will be given only in the case of a DIRE EMERGENCY.  (Must be approved by the Registrar or Academic Dean).

Exam Clearance: Students will be not be cleared to take final exams until all financial obligations have been met.  Students will receive notification from the appropriate office (Enrollment Services, Student Development, Library, Bookstore) if they are NOT cleared to take exams.  Immediate response is required.  Professors will receive a list of students who are not cleared on the first day of final exams.  Final exams may not be made up.

Classes which meet at night will have their final exam administered during finals week on the evening and at the same time the class normally meets.

The New Beginning

Five years ago, Christian Heritage College experienced a new beginning. For some, the most visible impact of this new beginning—the change of the school’s name to San Diego Christian College—signaled a possible departure from the institution’s rich history of providing a quality Biblical liberal arts education. In truth, the new beginning initiated a plan to make the college self-sustaining for the first time in its then 25-year history and to ensure that its tradition of impacting the world for Christ would continue long into the future.

Through the process, SDCC has formalized its relationships with and reduced its dependence upon its sister organizations, improved its accreditation standing with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), expanded academic programs, increased scholarship endowments, and implemented many organizational and facility improvements to better serve its students and the Christian community. SDCC’s Board has also been bolstered by the presence of Shirley Peters and Beverly LaHaye (wives of founders Art Peters and Tim LaHaye) as well as others who have helped energize and support the direction of the college.

The May Ministry Match

Excited by recent college successes including the addition of a Christian Ministries Major under the Adult Professional Studies Program, approval by WASC to launch an online degree program and rising enrollments in SDCC’s traditional programs, a long-time friend of SDCC has pledged a $100,000 matching gift in an effort to encourage others to start or resume supporting the ministry of the college.

Recognizing the need for ongoing financial support for every program offered by SDCC, every new gift or pledge made by May 31, 2010 will be matched dollar-for-dollar regardless of designation.* The only requirement to qualify for matching funds is that cash gifts must be received by May 31, 2010 and pledges must be made by that date with the intention of being paid in monthly installments within one year.

Every Gift Counts

There are no gifts too small. Two people making $25 monthly gifts could provide a $1,200 scholarship to a deserving student. One person making a $40 monthly gift could help us buy $1,000 of office and/or classroom equipment. A corporate gift of $5,000 could help us make $10,000 in summer improvements to our residence halls and classrooms facilities.

* To qualify for matching funds, gifts must be designated for currently budgeted projects or programs and may not be designated to benefit any specific student, staff or faculty member. If you would like to fund a specific program but are unsure as to how to proceed, please contact Vic Conner, Director of Advancement at (619) 590-1750.
