Unify Browser and Desktop Experience - Draggable Applet

The new draggable feature in Applet unifies user's browser and desktop experience -
The New Plug-In allows you to drag an Applet off from a browser to your desktop
and allows your Applet continues to run. In addition to dragging an Applet off from a browser, when user closes the
a shortcut can also be created from this draggable Applet. The shortcut utilizes Java Web Start
technology and allow user to launch the Applet with Java Web Start without
opening a web browser. Thus, this feature unifies desktop
application deployment via Java Web Start technology, and Applet deployment
inside the browser.

Where are build 15-20? What did I miss?

No worries. The build numbers 14-19 were reserved for beta candidates, and only 14 were used. Build 15-19 were never used; thus never existed. Build 20, however, does exist. Due to a minor delay, we have pushed build 20 and build 21 on the same day. Build 21 is now available on the 6u10 EA download page, and build 20 is put into the archive directly.

All the bug fixes in build 20 are included in build 21. Therefore, you won't be missing any important fixes in b20. Here are the summary of changes for b20 and the summary of changes for b21.

The Java Deployment Toolkit has added new methods for beta users to deploy pre-release Java. To deploy Java SE 6 Update 10 early access, simply call the deployJava.setEarlyAccess('true') and provide an URL to the early access download.

Java SE 6 Update N build 13 is now available for download! For a list of fixes, please see the summary of changes.

In b13, we introduce new Java system properties to support the usage of version download and Pack200 without any server side requirements. This addresses the issue that is raised in RFE 6378311. This increases the flexibility of deploying version download and Pack200 JARs without using JNLPDownloadServlet on web servers.

For more information about the new Java system properties and usage, please refer to the testing guideline.

We have included new documentations for the New Plug-In. It provides detail descriptions of the exciting features in New Plug-In. These include how to set VM parameters per applet and how to run applets in separate VMs.

Deploy Java with Deployment Toolkit, and Java Kernel. Load your applets in the New Plug-In. Observe the performance enhancements with Java QuickStarter and hardware acceleration support. Last but not least, switch your GUI apps to the new Look and Feel, Nimbus.

Attention: Starting in 6uNb07, the version string of 6uN early access has changed from 1.6.0_05 to 1.6.0_10.

On Windows, there is a bug in the installation of build 07 (CR 6629444). Please uninstall any previous 6uN installs before installing 6uNb07.

To uninstall previous 6uN installs:
1. Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Program
2. Remove "Java 6 Family"

Try the new Direct3D 9-based Java2D pipeline in 6uN EA

Hello,

Sun had released an Early Access of 6uN (formerly known as the Consumer JRE). You can get build b04 here:
http://download.java.net/jdk6/

This build contains the new Direct3D 9-based Java2D pipeline, which is enabled by default on Windows platform. It is very similar to the OpenGL pipeline (in fact they share a lot of code), and is based on the Single Thread Rendering model developed for the OpenGL pipeline:

The D3D pipeline accelerates pretty much the same set of operations as the OGL one:

So, this is a call to action:
Please try your applications with this new pipeline and let us know if you find any issues. We really want to make this pipeline rock-solid as it needs to be if it is to be left enabled by default. Time is short, so the sooner you report issues the better chances are we'll have time to fix them.

Please report both negative and positive findings so we can keep track of what's working and what's not (and on which HW). Take a look at this page for testing/troubleshooting guidelines:

(please make sure to include the output of J2D_TRACE_LEVEL=4 output
with your postings)

There are some known problems in full-screen mode, multi-screen, and on some chipsets (namely, Intel 645G). These are being worked on and hopefully will be addressed by the release time.

Another thing to be aware of - this pipeline does not accelerate Xor rendering mode. It will be really, really slow.

We have just included the testing guideline for Deployment Toolkit (DT). The deployment toolkit allows developers to detect user's Java environment. It also allow developers to easily install JRE on users systems. Besides the testing guideline, we have also posted deployment advise for good practice in deploying your Java applet or webstart
applications.
