In Hawaii, it’s traditional to give leis on special occasions, graduations, birthdays, anniversaries. Although flower leis are most common, sometimes people like to make leis out of all different types of materials. Especially ones that last for a long time, like yarn. As a kid I remember making tons of these yarn leis for friends for different occasions. A lot cheaper than a lei and it’s made by you.

You’ll need:

• Yarn
• Scissors
• Ribbon

Using your left hand, thread the yarn between your thumb and pointer finger. Wrap the yarn around (in back of) your pointer finger and in front of your middle finger. Wrap yarn behind your ring finger & in front of your pinky. Wrap the yarn in back of your pinky and go back weaving the yarn in the opposite way you did the first time.

Once you get to the pointer finger, wrap the yarn behind all of your fingers, bringing it back to the palm of your hand, where you will draw it across towards your pointer. Reaching under the last line you made with the yarn, grab the loop that is wrapped around your pinky finger. Using that loop, pull it up and over your finger and the yarn beneath it.

Repeat with each finger. Wrap the end of the yarn around the back of your fingers again, and once again around the front of your palm. Repeat with the loops for about 10 or so times.

When you flip your hand over, you should have a bunch of yarn that looks similar to this. Use the end of the yarn that is sticking out of the end to pull the lei into shape. Keep weaving until you’ve reached your desired length. Cut the yarn with a little bit of extra to spare.

Use the end piece of the yarn to wrap loop into each finger’s loop. Remove fingers and pull to tighten.

Tie into a knot and then bow if you with. You can then adorn the seam with a bow or ribbon flower or anything you’d like! Voila 

Before we jump into the kit, let’s chat about the ‘Day of the Dead.’ You’ve probably seen those colorful skulls and thought, “That’s some cool art!” But let me tell ya, there’s so much more to the ‘Day of the Dead’ than just pretty designs. Buckle up, ’cause we’re going on a cultural rollercoaster!

A Bit About the ‘Day of the Dead’

Origins & Roots: So, way back in the day, indigenous groups in Mexico had this tradition of honoring their ancestors. When the Spanish colonizers came along with Catholicism, things got mixed up a bit, and bam! ‘Día de los Muertos’ was born. It’s like a cultural cocktail of ancient Aztec beliefs and Catholic traditions. Talk about a mashup!

All About Those Altars: One of the big things during the celebration is setting up altars, or ‘ofrendas.’ These aren’t just any altars, though. They’re decked out with photos, candles, marigolds (the flower of the dead), and the favorite foods and drinks of the departed. It’s like a welcome party for the spirits!

Costumes & Makeup: Okay, this is where things get super fun. People dress up with these epic costumes, but the real showstopper is the sugar skull makeup. Think vibrant colors, intricate designs, and flowers galore. And it’s not just about looking fab; it’s a way to connect with the departed and celebrate life.

Celebration Vibes: Imagine a party where the entire town comes alive at night. Streets are filled with parades, music, dancing, and some of the most mouth-watering food you can imagine (hello, pan de muerto!). It’s a time to remember loved ones, share stories, and just revel in the beauty of life and death.

The Symbolism: Beyond the party, there’s deep symbolism in everything. From the monarch butterflies that are believed to carry the souls of the departed, to the ‘calaveritas’ (little skull poems) that poke fun at the living, it’s all about embracing the cycle of life.

So, today is my day on the Fabulous Freebees blog hop, hosted by my friend Joan at MooseStash Quilting. You’d never guess this was the first hop she’s hosted, she’s been great at getting it organized and keeping us all apprised of the happenings of the hop. Thanks, Joan for hosting this very fun hop.

Free patterns are really everywhere on the web. I’ve heard more than once that we are inundated with them. Frankly, who doesn’t love a free pattern? I can’t tell you I don’t, because I do.  I’ve even been known to offer a few free patterns myself every now and again. I have no problem buying a pattern I like, but free ones are always nice also.

I didn’t create one of my own patterns, as I’ve been wanting to do this one for a while.

Today, my project is along the lines of Christmas once again. If you remember last month I said it was going to be my goal to create something for everyone this year for Christmas and I’m still working on that goal, so here is my project…

I love this centerpiece. At So Sew Easy, where this pattern originates from, the designer created a full table runner with it. I’ll be honest when I say I was going to make the table runner, but as I got the 4 of these pieced together, I realized that for me it would just be too heavy and while I love the 3 poinsettia’s she used in her table runner, I really only wanted something that I could set on the table as perhaps a centerpiece or something that set on each side of the centerpiece on the table. Let’s say a gorgeous bunch of real poinsettia’s.

This is a very easy pattern to create. It took me about 3 hours from cutting the fabric to finishing it, and had I been able to do most of it on my normal machine it would have been faster. I will be making more of these.

There is a funny story to this pattern. If you all remember right, I was stuck downstairs in July. My hubby brought my pc down, but we didn’t bring any extras downstairs, such as a printer. In order to create this pattern, I was going to need to print it out. Well that wasn’t going to happen, yes, I could have taken it to the print shop, but I didn’t even think of that until I’d already devised a way to create this without having to print it out. I took and printed it to an image, and then opened my Bernina Designer Plus software and digitized the circles and the leaves to the pattern. I did have to make it smaller. I don’t have a 10-inch hoop which is about what the circles measured out to be in my software, so I reduced it to fit an 8-inch hoop which is my larger hoop width size. So my design is smaller than hers, but it’s still stitched with the same instruction and I love the size as it’s perfect for a centerpiece on the table.

So I know you must be wondering about what is happening with the Row Along. Well it’s right on track at this point, some fun things have been happening in the designer’s group we have for the row along and I’ve been seeing some amazing rows come to life for the row along this year… But I thought I’d tempt you with a little sneak peek of one of the perks of participating today and lets you in on the final list of participants for this year.

Northcott Fabrics has kindly given fabric to the designers participating to help them create their rows. You’ll be able to see those over the course of August as I announce each sponsor’s giveaways also. The designers will also feature their fabrics on their featured day of the row along.

If you haven’t joined us for previous row alongs, I will post an instruction/type note under the Sponsors list in this post for you. This is a long post, but it covers everything you need to know.

As a reminder, each designer has a free pattern for you this year. However, designers are only required to keep their patterns free for one week past there featured day. You must visit each day if you wish to download the patterns. Designers are free after that period to put their rows up for sale or leave them free for you to download. Patterns may be available on the designer’s website thru a cart system, a simple download, via google drive, one drive, Payhip, Craftsy, or any other way that the designer finds it easy to set her download. If you miss a pattern and want the pattern, please respect that designer and buy it if she has put it up for sale. Do not write to her and ask her to send it to you.

So, here we go…

Designers work all year to create these patterns for you, they are asked to turn in a pre-draft pattern, stitch there rows out during the summer and then post a blog post about the row pattern they are offering you. This is not an easy task, during the process we do lose some designers who find the deadlines and the ability to meet them difficult. Please respect the patterns, do not share or give them away to friends, please send your friends to the blogger’s website during the event to download them or to the place where they can purchase the pattern.

How the Row Along Works

Seams To Be Sew will post a list of the blogger/designer’s featured each day of this event. Please only enter giveaways at this site if you have problems doing it on another bloggers site. Not all blogs have the ability to use Rafflecopter.

Basically the row along works like a blog hop. you must visit each site to download the pattern of the day that the blogger/designer is being featured on.

This row along is featured each Tuesday and Thursday during the month of September and the first week of October. The last Tuesday is a Show and Tell Day.

To enter giveaways, you will need in many cases to comment, or visit social media pages of the designer/blogger and the sponsor.

Patterns are not available to download until the featured designer/blogger’s day of the event.

Rules and Guidelines For Giveaways

Please take the time to read it.

1. Giveaways offered by sponsors are assigned to the various bloggers for their featured day.
   There are no prior announcements on who is doing which sponsor except to the sponsor and blogger/designer themselves.

4. Winners are announced within 24 hours of the give away ending.
5. You must give a valid email address when you enter the giveaways, any email returned to me, loses the ability to win automatically.
6. You are given 3 days to answer the email, if you do not answer within 3 days a new winner will be drawn. Check those spam/junk mail folders, you may miss that winning email if you don’t do so because there are no exceptions to this rule.
7. If you are notified that you are a winner, in most cases, you will need to provide your name, address, city, state, zip code, country, telephone number, and email address.
8. In most cases, unless otherwise specified, winners must be willing to pay for shipping costs, whether you’re in the USA, or an International shipment.
9. No purchase whatsoever is necessary.
10. You must be 18+ in order to win a gift.
11. You are responsible for claiming and paying any tax owed on the value of any gift that you win. Prizes valued at $500.00 should be claimed.

Please note, every effort is made to protect the prizes. They go into a plastic bin when I receive them, and it is covered by an airtight cover. I have a dog in my home and I have a smoker in my home, so I do everything possible to protect the prizes.

When the company is overseas, it can take 6 weeks to 90 days for an item to also arrive.

Welcome to the last day of Oh Holy Night. It’s been a wonderful experience bringing this series to you each week.

I appreciate your patience during the few weeks I had to delay because of other obligations, but I think it’s been worth the wait.

Oh Holy Night is my second BOM Finish since opening my blog in 2013.

Baby Jesus comes in two sizes, the difference is fairly minimal at only a 1-inch sized difference, but I believe you will be able to tell the difference, one is wider, one is taller.

This design will remain free thru November 12, 2015.

Baby Jesus comes with machine embroidery files also.

I am planning a post in a few weeks for ideas to finish your borders, and quilting along with some embellinshing ideas.

I hope to be posting the full pattern later today at my Payhip Shop. I will think about Craftsy for later. I’m worried the pdf is going to be to large for their limitations on pattern uploads.

Heya Everyone..

Perhaps you remember my ghoulish hand from Wicked 3 in 2013.

Last year I added it to my wallhanging for the Black Cat Blog Hop..

Many of you have requested this pattern over the years, and I have finally released it as a quilt pattern.

I added some extra hands to this pattern, I elongated the arm, added it to a corner, and added a spider.. as a bonus part of the pattern I have added more spiders in various sizes including one for a mugrug.

Each of the arms come in a variety of sizes:

The original hand comes in 8×5, 10×7, and 12×9

The hand with the spider comes in 8×5, 10×7, and 12×9

The hand in a corner comes in 9×4, 10×5, 12×7, and 15×10

The elongated hand comes in 15×10 only.

Extra spiders are 9×6, 12×7, and 15×10 with a special mugrug size of 6×9.

I’ve already bought the classes I have been wanting, so let me give you a tip about getting classes at half price even when their is no sale.

If a new class has just come out, take the authors name, and put it in your favorite search engine like “Angela Waters Quilter” without the quotes.

Then check their blogs, stores, even facebook pages, sometimes they announce a discount of their new classes at 50% off .. This is the time to get them at the cheapest available time.
