Most travelers assume that parking on the airport is the easiest, safest, and cheapest way to go, but this is a big mistake, particularly at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR).

Newark Liberty has three levels of parking on the grounds. There is short term parking located across the access road from each of the terminals. The short term lots are an easy walk to the terminal as long as you do not have much luggage, but they cost $33 per day. Travelers can save as much as $9 a day by selecting one of the Daily Parking Garages and pay between $24 and $27 per day depending on the garage. The AirTrain light rail connects these garages to the terminals, but you have to walk to one of the stations, which can be a hassle if you have a lot of luggage. The least expensive on-airport option is the Economy Lots, but they still are relatively expensive at $18 a day and the buses that connect the Economy Lots to the terminals are slow and overcrowded.

Because of the high rates and inconvenience of parking at Newark Liberty, off-airport long term parking is very popular. Travelers should be prepared for the possibility of imaging machines, pat-downs and delays. Here are a few things fliers need to know as they navigate the Atlanta Airport:

Be early
- Delta Air Lines is advising travelers to get to the airport three hours in advance of international flights and up to two hours in advance of domestic flights. Check with your airline for more specific suggestions.

Security lines
- Hartsfield-Jackson’s main security checkpoint is on one end of the main terminal and has 22 lanes for passengers flying out. A maze line leads to the checkpoint. The line usually moves slowly but steadily. The airport has four lanes at a Terminal South checkpoint and six lanes at a Terminal North checkpoint. Signs will direct travelers to three types of lanes they can choose from: Black Diamond for expert, elite or frequent business travelers; Blue Square for more casual travelers with carry-on baggage and a basic understanding of security requirements; and Green Circle for those with special needs or those traveling with young children in strollers.

- The TSA this year also launched a new “trusted traveler” program at Hartsfield-Jackson and a few other airports, allowing some travelers such as the most frequent fliers on Delta to opt into the “PreCheck” program for a chance at expedited screening. The PreCheck lane is one of the lanes at the South security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson.

Rather than use the airport's $9-per-day remote economy garage, the South Pasadena travel agent pulls into A-1 Express Airport Parking on the southern fringe of TIA. She drops off her car outside the office. A driver loads her luggage onto a free shuttle to the airport terminal 2 miles away.

And Wohl's $30 parking bill for four days is $6 cheaper than the airport's fee would be.

"It's a convenience, the price is good and you don't have to go look for your car when you get back," she said. "It's just so easy."

Most off-airport parking businesses compete strictly on price, shaving a few bucks off TIA's daily rate. That can add up to a tidy savings for travelers on extended trips.

Some offsite operators also offer services customers can't get at the airport: advance reservations for busy travel periods, oil changes and discount deals. A-1 Express customers can collect frequent-parking points, good for car washes and free parking.

November 2, 2011 - Detroit Free Press - by John Gallagher -- With Michigan's economy slowly recovering, hotels in many parts of the state report an upswing in occupancy, a leading hotel analyst reported this week.

Charles Skelton, president of Ann Arbor-based Hospitality Advisors, said in his mid-year report that three submarkets in particular were reporting higher occupancies -- downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor and the Romulus/Metro Airport area.

"With most of the downsizing in the auto industry behind us, many of the auto-centric submarkets in metro Detroit have been relatively stable since 2009," Skelton wrote. "Not surprisingly, in many of the other Detroit submarkets, new and renovated properties have enjoyed strong or increased numbers." Read More.

The Holiday Inn Express at LaGuardia Airport took a step toward becoming "carbon neutral" by teaming up with Green Energy Solutions, an energy consulting company, and will reduce their energy costs by 18.2%, or $13,493, per year.

Flushing, NY (PRWEB) -- The Holiday Inn Express at LaGuardia Airport took a step forward in its goal of going “carbon neutral” by becoming one of the first hotels in the Holiday Inn chain to install an energy management system. The hotel was advised by energy consulting firm Green Energy Solutions, a Con Edison market partner, to install in-room monitoring systems and HVAC controls that they project will save them 18.2% in energy costs, or $13,493 each year.

“The decision to invest in this system was made easy by the great rebates we got from Con Edison,” said Amit Ghandi, president of M&R Hotel Management Group, the entity that owns the hotel. Almost 50% of the project cost was subsidized by rebates from Con Edison, who offer project subsidies and other incentives to buildings who have approved the installation of energy management systems to lower energy demand.

All Parking Spaces Are Capped at $17 per Day Effective October 1

Sept 30, 2011 - Miami-Dade County, FL - PRESS RELEASE -- New rates going into effect at Miami International Airport at 12:01 a.m. on October 1 will simplify the cost of parking at MIA to $17 per day, or $2 for every 20 minute increment up to two hours and 40 minutes. The new rate slashes the previous charge of $30 for spaces in the short-term lot immediately outside the airport's Central Terminal while increasing by $2 the maximum daily rate in the Dolphin and Flamingo garages near North and South Terminal. This is the first rate increase at MIA in approximately five years.

“MIA has recently made a number of improvements to expedite the flow of traffic and improve customer service, including the implementation of SunPass Plus and valet parking for both North and South Terminal. With the opening of new terminal facilities for international arrival passengers, all 8,059 of our parking spaces are now considered premium parking spaces depending on your airline,” said Miguel Southwell, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Deputy Director for Business Retention and Development. “The rates have therefore been simplified to reflect this change.”

Sept 27, 2011 - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - By Kelly Yamanouchi -- The Atlanta airport’s new $1.4 billion international terminal, which will change the way some travelers use the sprawling complex, is entering the final stretch of construction after a long and bumpy journey.

Now set to open next spring -- six years after the initial target date -- the terminal will create “a new front door to the airport,” said Atlanta Airport general manager Louis Miller, by offering an access point on the east side, off I-75.

The terminal is mainly designed for passengers using the adjacent international gate concourses. One of its most-touted features: it will bring an end to the cumbersome baggage process now required of Atlanta-bound international travelers. If flying with checked luggage, they must recheck it after clearing customs, then pick it up again after taking the airport train to the distant main terminal.

At the same time, one task for airport officials is making sure local travelers and regular visitors, long used to coming and going from one terminal for all flights, don’t end up in the wrong place. Read More

DFW Airport Begins Terminal E Expansion Project

Sept 21, 2011 - Airlines and Destinations -- Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW Airport) is beginning construction to add 54,000 square feet of “landside” interior terminal space in Terminal E, creating more room for ticketing, baggage claim, security and passenger services in areas before passengers pass through security checkpoints.

The work will expand the terminal building between gates E17 and E31, and is part of the DFW Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program (TRIP). The initial phase of TRIP for Terminal E also includes the reactivation of its ‘satellite’ terminal, which houses seven aircraft gates.

TRIP is a seven-year, $1.9 billion renovation plan to renew all four of DFW’s original terminals, which first opened when the airport itself opened in 1974. Under TRIP, DFW will replace aging infrastructure systems, update concessions and redesign terminal space to improve the passenger experience substantially. Read More
