Google Makes Conversion Tracking Easier

It has been officially announced in the Google AdWords blog that advertisers will now find it easier to add and track their conversions for search ads. The new AdWords interface sections for webpages, conversions and code has been added by Google.The conversion page will show the conversion actions that are being tracked by you. The webpages will show the pages for which you are getting conversions and the code will get the code that is supposed to be added to the webpages.

Yahoo Testing Real-Time Search!

While putting an end to the recent rumors and to match its rivals, Yahoo has declared that it will test the real-time search feature in the search results. The step taken by Yahoo will enable it to provide updated, minute-to-minute Internet search results to the information seekers.

Because of the popularity of microblogging service Twitter that enables to broadcast 140 character messages, Real-time search has emerged as a popular way of finding information on the Internet. OneRiot is a real-time search engine focusing on the links & content from Twitter and other social media sites.

OneRiot will collect the real-time Internet information from various sources like Digg, Twitter and from its network of 3 million users who are using the company's software.

OneRiot is one of the companies that will be providing real-time results to Yahoo on trial basis. The data will initially be available to around 10 percent Yahoo users. It is also said that Yahoo is conducting real-time search tests with other companies also.

Sitelinks in Google AdWords Ads?

Off the heals of Google recent announcement that they will basically offer the ability for users to choose (Google AdWords Comparison Ads) for things they are actually looking for, now we hear that they will incorporate sitelinks in ads:

Increasing choice and relevancy in search ads

This is actually a pretty cool idea as long as you can pick the text and landing pages yourself, which it sounds like you can.

What Google SERP Reload Error Messages Say

For sometime now Ive noticed some sort of message flashed on my screen when hitting the back button to a Google SERP. It doesnt happen all the time, but certainly enough to have me wondering exactly what it says. The message normally disappears instantly (you only see it flash), but today one of those messages got stuck:

And the text reads:

"An error occurred. This page will be reloaded shortly. Or press the reload button now to reload it immediately."

Yep, a piece of useless trivia, but its been bugging me for ages to know what the message said. Now to figure out if its just me seeing a disproportionate number of these messages or is it more widespread?

China Accuses Google of Censorship (Seriously)

Google wants a book deal. And no, not so it can spill all the secrets of the Internet, but so they can offer electronic versions of books. But their proposed settlement faced so much opposition that they had to drop it, although theyre still pursuing other avenues. Aside from Yahoo and Microsoft, authors also challenged the Google book deal"including Chinese authors.

But the Chinese authors complaints, when indexed by Google, were listed as potentially harmful in SERPs, The Inquirer reports. Baidu gave no malware warning in its SERPs for the page. After readers reported this, the newspaper of the Communist Party accused the search engine of keeping its users away from the information. Meanwhile, an unnamed paper official said the section with the complaint was maliciously blocked by Google.

Yep. Thats right. The Chinese governments newspaper accused Google of censorship. Now, we all know that the Chinese government would never censor the Internet, so clearly, we can definitely believe everything they say. Riiiight.

The facts: Google is serving a malware warning for that page. But, Google claims, that warning is handled by an algorithm. No human hands, etc. And weve seen in the past thats the way this works.

So what do you think? Is Google trying to keep its users from seeing the Chinese authors complaints? Or is it just their crappy luck that their software flagged the page and now its getting even more attention?

YaToo: Y! Going Real Time

Apparently Twitter is all search-dealt out. After deals to bring real-time info to Bing (now) and Google (later), Twitter was not the last of the big threes choice for real-time search. (But does it matter if Yahoos deal with Bing goes through?)

Instead, Yahoo, almost a week behind the others, plans to go real time with OneRiot, according to TechCrunchs sources.

I know what youre thinking. Who? Good question. OneRiot tracks trends on the real-time web. You can search several social sites updates from OneRiot, or you can use their toolbar to add real-time content to any web search. A search on one of their listed trending topics brought up seven news articles, all of which were listed as first shared on Twitter. They have the ten most recent stories on their main page"and when I checked, 90% were from Twitter. Hooray for catching that other 10%, Yahoo.

Danny Sullivan (or Someone purporting to be Danny Sullivan (thanks for the correction, Danny!) commented on the TechCrunch article, calling the possible deal lame. He points out that Twitter APIs (and several other real-time startups) are free, and Yahoo should have gotten in on that action while it could.

GeoCities R.I.P. as Yahoo! Pulls the Plug

I doubt that there will be very many tears shed, however, one of the webs old timer resources is shutting down today as Yahoo! pulls the plug on GeoCities. I have to admit, I havent even looked at a GeoCities site in over a decade and I suspect that very few of you have either. In my opinion there really wasnt very much traditional Geo involved in GeoCities although you have to admit it was a great name and likely pretty high in demand anyway, so long GeoCities http://geocities.yahoo.com/

Google to Become Friendlier with Social Search

Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, FriendFeed & Flickr are all pretty common names in the social networking world, but now social and search are about to combine thanks to Google.

At the Web 2.0 expo last week, Googles Vice-President of Search Marissa Mayer surprised everyone with the announcement that Social Search is coming via Google Labs.

This new search feature will allow you to see search query results from people in your social network. By using your Google Profile, (if you fill it out with the other social networks youre a member of, such as FriendFeed) Google will scan who you are connected to and give your results from those people if they are relevant to your search query.

At the expo, Mayer demonstrated how a search for New Zealand produced a list of search results that included relevant content from friends half-way down the search results page. Among the search results were links from different friends, the first to a Gmail message that mentioned New Zealand and the second, a FriendFeed entry.

Although it was only announced a few days ago, Social Search has already generated quite a lot of buzz and has a number of internet experts rejoicing. This includes Danny Sullivan from Search Engine Land who said

"It was pretty impressive. I dont see a lot of things that make me go wow, thats useful. This did."

Mayer was a pretty much closed book when it came to divulging further information about Social Search. So we will have to keep you updated as more is announced from Google.
