It's one of those things glossed upon in-series. As for Akira's side of the family we know substantially more: his father is still alive (and is actually still living with the family, but we never see him in the anime), but his mother died while he was very young. It's for this reason why his sister has promised herself -- despite the protests of BOTH Akira and her father -- that she won't marry until her brother graduates.
