My favourite paintings always have been his bird paintings, (1950 – 1960), the simplicity of it and still so complicated  in the process of development (Im Werden).

The way I understand his development of a painting is that he studied and sketched everything he wanted to paint and just to pull and dissect it all to nothing in order to start from the beginning.

I like that because I understand the way that works; only I keep the colors while Braque thinks shapes (I guess).

Le jour

What surprises me so is what was written under his painting “Le Jour”, the writer in my book quotes Braque “If a painting does not disquiet – then what is it”.

He keeps on explaining the painting – “Le Jour” has a slightly nervy feel to it, the uneasiness emanates from the discordant relationship between yellow – green, burned ochre – yellow or violet – grey. The only uneasiness I detected is that large knife on the edge of the table.

But then we don’t have to agree with everything we read.

But we are always learning and there is still so much to be learned and so little time.

“The Vancouver Sun” brought an article about the huge rusty metal art and architectural use in the City, that made me very happy because…….. that is what I like.

On our property in the Kootenays we had a section of the acreage designated for my collection and called it Octopuses’ Garden.

(a large tree root decaying in the sun, did give it that name, it had the look of a many armed monster)

Visitors did a lot of head shaking while walking along the narrow pass but some stayed for a while sitting on one of the benches along the way to figure out what is so exiting about this reconstructed bicycle for instant or this strange metal recycled contraption on a pole.

Do you see clouds in white or dark only?  I don’t, I imagine all kinds of colors in wind and weather or sun and friendly skies, just like a child sees castles in the sky – why not see colors in the sky.

What was on my mind when I painted this one? I lived in the Kootenays at that time – that is a clue.

January is a good time to dream of a flower garden. Catalogues galore flying through the front door into my house, so to speak.

Dreaming of summer and the colors to come.

January is a good time to dream of a flower garden. Catalogues galore flying through the front door into my house, so to speak.

When we still lived in the Kootenays at the North end of the Lake,  not the best region for flower gardens but a friend of ours overcame this – “no problem” he said his wife loved horses they had a large property with horses and a horse B&B, dog and cats and of course a huge garden, an ideal combination. Squashes grew direct from out of the mountains of horse manure and carrot and peas galore, they where the most generous people I know and gave away what could not be canned or frozen. These 2 teachers phoned around the neighbourhood “come and get it”

But what I really liked was the, so to speak, flower garden, between the beans, bordering the berry bushes and filling the large turnabout with every kind of color , no designed traditional garden here, plants and flowers where ever there was an empty space.

I have to come back here one day to do some more exploring , see how little I captured of  my kind of garden:

My sentiments: My art is abstract because feelings, dreams and illusions do not have forms or boundaries.

But I want that I have an image in my mind and then use feeling and colors to proceed. We all come to a realisation of where we think our art should go.

Kasimir Malevich:1878 – 1935 a talented teacher, artist -his painting where confiscated ( I bet the confiscator made a few mill. with it later) died rejected and poor

The central theory of Wassily Kandinsky’s abstraction idea was that there is such a thing as inner necessity that is capable of determining the outward form of a work of art without reference to anything. The task for an artist is first to establish and then to maintain contact with the inner sound and then to search for and commit to canvas it’s visual equivalent as form and color.

A good theory for some and help for others but there is still another way( for me)

you see a picture, say – a landscape -  make contact with your inner (sound?) {for lack of words} establish color and shape in your mind but the base of your vision is still the landscape and commit that to your canvas, don’t we have a better connection to that outcome?
