For me and my garden it means local plants, local seeds – being green does not mean – cut trees down so we have more sun for our veggie garden, work with what you have – -in any situation.

Chickens on City lots? not necessarily -  Lots of harsh ammonia poop,  not much green in the yard and who says it is green when you have to buy feed trucked in from somewhere else.

I have memories of how happy we were with less but I guess that will not make the world healthy again.

I do not believe the good old times ever existed – but memories are memories

The Island (my home village is on an Island, very posh and touristy)

Millions of $s goes into “Uferbefestigung” safe the Island from erosion, but the North Sea is slowly but steadily eating away on the miles and miles of golden beaches anyway.

Time to dredge

Now, the other side is, more houses, hotels and apartments are built, it chokes the Island with cars and trucks, too many people want to live there.

Money makes pollution. Not very green. We just like to think we think green!

Gardening – started because I had to help Dad in the garden,

He did all the easy stuff and I had to do the veggie garden –weeding, that sort of boring work.

I wanted to talk about my other amazing small flowering plant which is flowering right next to the Winter aconite. The Hardy Cyclamen (cyclamen hederifolium); First time I put my eyes on that beauty when I was working in Switzerland

(ja, just think – from the most northern village of Germany to the highest mountains in a foreign Country) totally different fauna, never seen a cyclamen in the wild or otherwise, nope, not on my sandy Island, heather, heather and more heather and a few other pretty plants – later about that.

The Hardy Cyclamen likes the cool climate and mine do flower from late November till about April. They have peculiar habit, its stem is in the beginning wound up tightly in a spiral and one the flower drops of it goes back into the “ fetal” position, such an amazing flower.

Pierre Soulages (French Painter, post war abstractionist) has an amazing show in”The Pompidou Gallery”, Paris.

I did a little research – (thanks to Google, I do not have to leave my house,  buy expensive tickets to fly to Paris ( would not mind so) or expensive tickets to see the show etc. with the click of the mouse we are where we want to be)

I admired his work – no not true, was too inexperienced, at least I should say know of it from “whenever”; (very useable expression I learned from the younger generation); so – I did get to love the art of that time, after WW.1 and again after WW.2

Did a giggle about his comment, “retrospective” does not feel right because there is still fresh work on my easel (turning 90 or something soon)

But what I personally could relate to is when he said that he sees black in everything. Well, I see colour in everything. Snow is not just white, water is not only blue and a red flower is not only red, same with shapes there is a whole lot of energy around everything. Pierre Soulages based many on his paintings on the bare tree trunk, the upright move.

My garden is probably shaped of these memories, the idea of wild flowers, or going in the garden to pick a bunch of flowers for the breakfast table, no hybrids or exotics just locals. If possible I like to plan the garden so there will be something flowering from January to December. So far this year I had plum tree branches flowering in the vase 2 weeks ago, pussy willows – all dropped by now, of course they really don’t like the warm dining room, now I snip of miniature irises, winter aconites, the tiny first crocuses (they come before the normal larger ones) and snowdrops naturally.

See and have a look what I am talking about and the weather here is kind of similar as on the Island where I grew up; wet cold, only we had always- always wind. (Guess that is why I like to paint windy moods)

The # 13 is my favourite number, born on the 13^th, married on the 13^th still living and still married!!!! —– but never won the lottery on the 13^{th  ( or not at all)} – but too much wanting will break the spell;

so I said it more than once – be happy with little things – like

“WINTER ACONITE” 

I do not know why it is not more popular in our gardens, it is tough as nails. All summer I step on it while weeding – the plant crawls back into the dirt after it has shown us its beauty in very early February and once it gets too warm for its comfort she makes her exit. It gets covered up with more dirt more mulch and still in next February comes up roses –slash – aconite.

First sign is the cracking open of the snow cover or the cold muddy dirt (in my case) dirt is been lifted as if the unfriendly mole is early this year –  a strange looking watery green U shaped something becomes visible – this U is straightening its back and presto it carries a bud on the top end of its little stem, surrounded by strong green leaves as if they want to protect the flower from the cold air coming out the wet dirt.

Now my bad conscience starts rising – have to rake all the dead leaves and the piles and piles of cedar needles of the flower beds to give the winter aconite a proper deserving surrounding. I mostly started my spring clean up around the 16^th of February but now the winter aconite (Eranthis Hymalis) is telling me when to start.

Just step away from the yellow beauty is the other winter flower in mauve and purple, it really, really needs attention too but I will leave that for next time.

Happy spring clean up just ignore the sniffles and dripping nose – go for it.

Of course I have to do a little painting  just so to give my old bones a little rest from hard work.
