Having just completed a successful craigslist purchase, we were headed home and poised to turn right at a stop sign. Although we could have made the turn minutes earlier, we waited to watch this would be “Link” for a bit as he was oblivious to our presence. We started to go on our way, but as we turned he looked skyward and blurted, “I suspect there’s nothing but trouble.” Truly, a great Link the Zelda Hunter sighting.

When I first spotted him I thought he looked like something out of Lord of the Rings. It wasn’t until he turned around that I noticed the utility belt, the baseball bat, and other accoutrement. That’s when I realized I was face to face with the “real” Link. I was wishing I’d had my gameboy with me…I’m stuck on this one part! He was with the older gentelman, and they were both arguing loudly. Neither one was making a lot of sense, so it’s hard to determine which one actually has a grip on reality. I wanted to capture a picture with my cell phone, but since I was at work, it would have been highly inappropriate. It’s a little sad…neither one looked (or smelled) like they’d had a shower this year.

We saw him in the parade, walking with his scarves, and naked except for the ring around his junk. What intrigues me about Boe is how happy is face is, yet how dead behind the eyes he is! Later, after a couple hours in the beer garden, we saw him set up near Brower’s. We got a pic with him, and he proclaimed, “I’m a nudist! They make me wear clothes!”
If you can, get one of his business cards. All seats were taken, and people sat on the floor or leaned against the walls to take in a tribute for Alan Lau. Everyone was there to honor the man who IS without a doubt the ambassador to the Asian American Arts community in Seattle. Artists of different disciplines took the stage to honor their friend and colleague. “Impressions of Alan”, work by visual artist friends was for sale, as well as a limited edition (150) of Alan’s chap book “more days in produce” each adorned by original art by the poet/ painter.

If it’s the guys I’m thinking of (and, really, who else could I be thinking of…), they used to come into the REStore all the time. They lived in a small motor home on 14th near there, I’d occasionally see them entering or leaving. As far as I remember, they never bought anything (I suspect they were just hanging out), and never really said much. In the last year or so I worked there (2007-ish), I didn’t see them so much. There used to be a lot of people living in their cars on the median of 14th ave, but there was a move afoot to clean that area up, so there’s fewer and fewer these days.

I really never saw them more than like 2 feet from each other. Though, I suppose, if I /did/ see either one of them alone, I wouldn’t have recognized them anyway. One cowboy is nothing. But /two/ cowboys…

I’ve seen this guy for years, and always figured he had a Tolkien obsession. Sometimes he’s smoking a strange pipe, and he always has a metal baseball bat tucked into his pack – where you’d figure a sword would go. Sometimes he’s with the old guy, but sometimes not. He frequently reeks.

Boe Odyssey is his name. He used to pick up garbage on my street on the hill (near the 15th Safeway). Helped out with an art show a few years prior, where he submitted some paintings, too. Ridiculously colorful, as expected, possibly with unicorns. He came by the opening and wandered around a bit, but was fairly uncommunicative. Though actually, I had a couple phone conversations with him too, while working on the show – nothing deep, you know, just logistics.

He used one of those metal claw things to pick up the garbage and put it in a sac. It thought it was a respectable thing to do, keeping the neighborhood clean.

I don’t so much have a sighting, as much as many sightings, and information. I’ve seen Juan dozens of time throughout the past ten years, and I was always curious about him.

I have a friend who got to know Juan while she was a barista at the coffee stand outside of Nordstroms, and she told me that he’s protesting the fact that an apartment building for low-income married couples evicted him when his wife passed away, because they no longer considered him married. His view is that he will always be married.

She said that he would come into the employee lounge at Nordstroms for coffee, and only drink from a fresh pot, because he believe the CIA put poison at the bottom of the pot. Or something.

She also told me that he is not homeless, as many people believe, and that if you offer him money he will get offended and show you his wallet.
