Ciou
“Mysterious Flowers”

Opening Friday February 12th 6-9pm
Show runs through March 6th

Sarah Joncas new show focuses on the theme of shadows. Her work is primarily narrative portraiture, but is imbued with a sense of cinematic spatiality and a contemporary noir sensibility. Influenced by artists diverse in scope as Van Eyck, Lautrec, Hopper, Varo, Mucha, and Frida Kahlo, Sarah was also greatly influenced by the newly emerging Anime scene as a child. As Anime became more pervasive in US culture, it was readily embraced for its approach of using complex narratives and emotional maturity within a cartoon framework. This use of a cartoon as a form of fine art “character” has been one of the stapes behind the Pop Surrealism scene and Sarah’s melancholy heroines are examples of the range of subtle nuances that can be achieved using that as a base despite its seeming limitations. She has exhibited her paintings in New York, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Rome.

Ciou hails from Paris, France. Her work features the admittedly well worn standard of spooky girls and their animals consorts, however Ciou’s unapologetic punk style (reminiscent of teenage notebook scrawls dialed up to 11) breathes a new brash life into the theme. Her sweet and sour heavy metal nymphs live out their wild carnivalesque fairytales on found vintage papers, taken from old medical books, dictionaries, and nature manuals. Her line-work is by turns thickly layered like decadent rocker girl eyeliner and then meticulously thin and ornate like stitchwork. Ciou has exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam,Brussels, Toulouse,Berlin, Los Angeles, Rome, and Barcelona. This is her first US solo show. She also has about of her work entitled “Chat Siamose”.

Come up north on Saturday Feb 13th to celebrate the rebirth of a great neighborhood dive, Darrell’s Tavern at 18041 Aurora.

I’d passed by Darrell’s Tavern (just off Aurora Avenue, a bit south of Aurora Village) so many times, and never happened to find it open when it was convenient. Then when I started to make trips specifically to go there, I’d find it closed even at the most unexpected times. As I visited other area bars and chatted with the locals, I began to pick up pieces of the story of the aging, interesting owner — the CPA business upstairs (where he may or may not have lived for a while), the fleet of Lincoln Continentals in the parking lot, the Korean wife who spiced up the place for a few years, then left him, subsequently caring less and less about the bar as a going concern.

I despaired of ever being able to add Darrell’s to my Project K-Bar list of bars where I’ve had a drink. So I was delighted to be driving past one night and notice that it was actually open. And I was even more pleased to find that it had a new owner, Dan Dykman, who appreciates the character and the history of the place while simultaneously bringing some much needed upkeep and upgrades. Dan dropped a healthy sum just to fix, move, and preserve the old sign out front, and while cleaning up the classic 60s decor and neighborhood feel, he is bringing in live music, adding liquor, and making other improvements.

This Saturday Dan is having a “grand re-opening” party with live music at the bar “where your dad used to drink.” If you love great old neighborhood bars, you owe to yourself to drop by — on Saturday night if possible, or sometime not too long after that.

Hi Gang We MoonSpinners have an especially fun show coming up on Feb. 13th, not only the eve of Valentine’s day but also the start of Chinese New Year (The Year of the Tiger for those of you scoring at home). So what better venue than The Orient Express restaurant and bar in SODO (the train cars on fourth avenue once known as the beloved Andy’s Diner)? And just to make it more cross-cultural, on the slate with us are Les Étrangers - a Portland-based group that specializes in 60’s French garage-pop classics, plus the soulful stylings of DJ Miss Lilli’s scratchy 45’s. The kitchen stays open late, the drinks will be bold and the beer will be cold - come for fun & great music!

Van Dyke Parks

One of my favorite musicians and songwriters, Van Dyke Parks, is appearing Tuesday 2/9 in Seattle at The Triple Door.

Best known for his collaboration with Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys, but also as a session musician, composer, arranger, lyricist, and singer, he’s contributed significantly to several decades’ worth of masterpieces credited to other artists, as well as generating two or three masterpieces of his own.

You can view just a sample of his music on his website.

He was a session musician and worked with Sonny & Cher, as well as playing sessions for producer Terry Melcher on records by Paul Revere & the Raiders and other artists.

Van Dyke Parks and Brian Wilson

In 1998, he released a live album, and in the next decade he collaborated anew with Brian Wilson, who finally released a finished realization of SMiLE with new recordings on the Nonesuch label in 2004. Two years later, Parks began contributing lyrics to another Brian Wilson project, That Lucky Old Sun.
