]]> A few weeks ago I had the fortunate experience of portraying Helga Peskoller in Innsbruck. Helga is an accomplished alpinist but more importantly an amazingly wise and eloquent professor of philosophy. Her work revolves around the subject of extreme sports, challenges in mountaineering and education. BERGWELTEN magazine interviewed her and my task was to capture the discussion. Helga spoke with her eyes closed almost the entire length of the interview and filled the space around her with such an intensity that it was riveting to watch and hard to resist.

]]> Two weeks ago, Red Bull called and asked me to shoot a series of PR photos and portraits of their newly signed athlete, the German ultra running sensation Flo Neuschwander. I’m a sucker for portrait jobs so I jumped at the opportunity and found myself at the Munich Olympic Park a week later, together with a film crew, Flo and a few volunteer runners. Flo was in Munich to attend the annual ISPO trade fair, the film crew was there to shoot an image film for the upcoming Wings for Life charity run that Flo is a big part of and I was granted an hour of Flo’s undivided time to shoot a whole series of different shots of Flo. That was the plan. The filming took longer and I was kinda left to my own devices but I had expected something like this to happen and had planned accordingly. I had set up a make-shift studio with a grey seamless to be able to shoot some clean and simple full-length shots of Flo and rattled those shots off quickly. Flo was a very thankful subject and cool with everything, making my life easier. Then we headed outside to get some less staged shots, a bit more spontaneous and uncontrived. Luckily the weather was on our side and in the end I got all of the shots that I wanted and a few more. ]]> Not too long ago an unexpected call came from Rodenstock to shoot new images for the urban lifestyle brand ROCCO. I was especially happy to get the call because several years ago, a very last-minute and high-pressure job for Rodenstock jumpstarted my “career” in advertising and it is always a good feeling when clients come back to you with a new project they want to entrust you with. This new job was actually pretty unusual and challenging because the concept basically called for a still-life “lifestyle” shoot: the sunglasses were the main character, any people in the shots were props and their faces wouldn’t be seen…! Definitely a novelty for me! The second challenge was that Rodenstock, one of the oldest still existing German companies, wanted a perfect blend of urban and outdoor lifestyle set in and around Munich. Luckily, the landlocked Bavarian capital sports one of the most famous inner-city surf spots in the world and that is where we ended up shooting the main image of the campaign. The other shots were all shot nearby, in the English Garden and on the Isar river banks, we even took some of the sunglasses underwater and tried some more experimental angles. Not sure if those images will ever see the light of day considering Rodenstock sells most of their sunglasses in the Middle East and in the Asian market, but it was fun to do, nevertheless.

]]> A few months ago I hit up my buddy Nik, an independent film maker and fishing addict, to head out to the mountains to capture some fly fishing action. We spent the day wading through the frigid water of the Loisach river in Garmisch, Nik hunting for trout and I hunting for nice images. For me it was an entirely new experience, I’ve gotto admit fishing is not really my thing, but for the first time I understood the attraction of it. Nik’s eyes lit up when he spotted a section of the river with deep, slow-flowing water: that is where the trout congregate. He made sure to sneak up inconspicuously, to stay down-stream, to not cast the fly like a mad man but to aim precisely and have patience. Fly fishing in particular takes skill, knowledge and experience and time flew by while we were on the river. Sadly the fishing season ended a few days later so I’ll have to wait until the Spring to head out again to resume the “hunt” for fish and photos. Here, in the mean time, some shots from my first fly fishing session.

]]> Definitely my most favorite shoots of last year. Great client, great agency and to top it all off, a very, very cool crew of people. Literally everything lined up for this shoot, most importantly the human element. With a photo shoot like this one, the chemistry on set is crucial. Bad vibes can ruin everything but good vibes can elevate a shoot to a level where “magic” can happen, to put it in a very cheesy but very applicable way. The talent in front of the camera, Babsi, Helena and the dangerous duo who we dubbed “Hubert” and “Heribert” were incredibly easy going, fun and funny and up for everything that I and the producer threw at them. Climb up the pinnacle? Sure! Jump in the river? Ok! And they also “got it”, they understood that we were after authentic moments, the much loathed buzzword of the advertising world, and delivered those moments. As often and as easily the term “authenticity” is used, it is seldom delivered. In staged situations, which every commercial photo shoot is by definition, the proverbial creative box needs to be big enough for those moments to happen. Luckily, with Jack Wolfskin, it was. I was free to go nuts! The producer tells me which product needs to be shot and which setting we’re shooting in and then the rest is up to me. I love it, there is no better way to work. You’re always on your tip toes, adapting, reacting, pushing the envelope and hustling non stop. We worked hard, from sunrise until sunset and then some more, but at no point did we stop having fun and the results, of which I am proud of, show it.
