TecnoMobile doles out scholarships in cash prizes to three public school pupils

Primary school pupils in Ipaja-Ayobo and Ijaiye Ojokoro Local Government Areas of Lagos State were all smiles as they celebrated Children’s Day with TECNO Mobile. The celebration saw three pupils - Ayoola Taofeeqot of Abesan Primary school Ipaja, Roger Kehinde of Estate Primary school Ipaja, and Ossai Ukamaka from Community Primary School Ayobo, go home with N100,000 in cash scholarship.

The winners were selected from an openly conducted quiz competition which saw the most outstanding pupils from the various primary schools contest for the scholarship prize award.

Globally, the issue of quality education is a big concern. Several nations are placing education at the top of their priority list because they know that majority of the world’s problem is a knowledge problem. Unfortunately, most developing nations are still struggling to find a place for education in their system. They are yet to build good infrastructures or even gather expert administrators to cater for this sector. As a country, if we must break out of the cocoon of bad leadership, vices, anomalies and poverty amongst other things then, we must take our educational system seriously and start to treat it with kid gloves.

Thankfully, the government has made every public school tuition-free. In some cases however, the extra charges students have to pay are still on the high side. Inasmuch as it is believed that the government has the power to do more, it is also believed that we will get a perfect educational system faster as a country if every individual and corporate entity does their bit towards achieving this feat. In a bid to mitigate this challenge, TECNO Mobile distributed educational materials to every pupil in seven different schools, days to the children’s day celebrations. The aim of this project was to make the pupils feel loved and have a positive mindset about life.This is the third consecutive year which Tecno Mobile has undertaken this CSR initiative, visiting schools and showing support for child education. This was done in collaboration with TalentBOOM, a not-for-profit which shares the same ideals of promoting grassroots education and child development.

For a better tomorrow, let’s all take responsibility for rebuilding our nation and making our society safe for our kids with every action or decision we make. Let’s instill the right values in them, guide and guard their thoughts, show them love at all times and groom them to be responsible adults. Niger Delta Militants threaten to bomb Aso Rock, NNPC towers, National Assembly, DSS Headquarters, others

The Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force, JNDLF, has threatened to attack many vital government offices including the seat of power, Aso Rock, the headquarters of NNPC in Abuja, National Assembly, the DSS headoffice and others.

In a statement released today June 6th, the militant group which threatened last week, to test 6 missiles in the Niger Delta regions beginning from tomorrow June 7th, warned members of the diplomatic community to remain neutral as they carry out their planned attacks. Part of their statement reads;

“In our final meeting it was resolved that the Nigerian Communication Satellite Orbit should be shut down so that it will avoid the cause of electronic radiation to human lives. Also, the followings occupants of these buildings should as a matter of urgency vacate them immediately in their own interest to save their lives because our fight is not for any human blood, but to destroy all those infrastructures that were built with our oil and gas monies in this country. They include: State House Villa, Abuja, Defence headquarters, DSS headquarters, National Assembly, NNPC Towers, Central Bank of Nigeria, Supreme Court/Appeal Court, Agip Heaquarters, Abuja, Shell Headquarters, Lagos, Chevron Headqurters, Lagos, Exxon Mobil, Lagos, NLNG, Lagos and Abuja Offices, Kaduna Refinery and all military formations in Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna and Benue. Killing Christians on flimsy excuse unacceptable – Northern CAN

The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned the killing of a 74-year old Igbo market woman, Mrs Bridget Agbahime, accused of blaspheming Prophet Mohammed by irate mobs in Kano State.

The body noted that the killing of Christians using flimsy excuses was unacceptable.

The Northern CAN warned that such act, which it described as barbaric must henceforth stop.

They urged the Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi to call their people to order.

The Christian body wondered why such gruesome and barbaric incident always feature in Kano, a foremost commercial city in the country.

“Why must it always be Kano State. This is not telling good of the state known to be a commercial city,” the Public Relations Officer of Northern CAN, Reverend John Hayab, told newsmen in Kaduna on Saturday in reaction to the incident.

Hayab noted that information made available to the group indicated that the late Mrs Agbahime was deliberately killed.

Besides, he said, the late woman was over 70 years and not 45 as widely reported, wondering how children of the deceased would forever live with such barbaric act meted out to their mother.

The CAN spokesman, therefore, called on the state government to, apart from arresting the key suspect, fish out other perpetrators and prosecute them in accordance with the law of the country.

The religious body also called on Islamic leaders to teach their followers on how to tolerate other faith, noting that on their parts, christian leaders had always taught their followers on the need to respect other religion.

The Northern CAN, also called on the police to at all times, carry out their constitutonal role of safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerians without fear or favour.

The CAN’s spokesman said: “We got it on good authority that the slained woman never blasphemed the Prophet Mohammed. That the mastermind of the killing, was fond of always provoking the deceased and so, on that fateful day, we learnt, the said man was doing ablution in front of the woman’s shop and was cautioned. That was all. The man raised the alarm that she blasphemed Prophet Mohammed.”

The cleric added: “The man deliberately provoke the woman in question just to carry out that gruesome and barbaric acts.

“We are saying the mere arrest of the key suspect of this barbaric act was not enough. All those that perpetuated the killing of the innocent woman must be fished out and brought to book.

“The state government must go further than this and the Emir of Kano and all well- meaning citizens of Kano must come out and condemned it. This is not telling good of the area(Kano).

“We are committed to peace and stability of this country. We can’t understand why our people should killed on flimsy excuse(s).”

Nigerians tell Buhari: Name, shame looters, mere figures not enough

Several groups and individuals across Nigeria have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to fulfil his promise of naming those who stole from the country’s treasury.

Those who spoke in reaction to the list of recovered funds and assets published by the Federal Government on Saturday insisted that the names of those who returned their loot must be published to make the loot recovery process more transparent.

President Buhari had on May 13, 2016, in an interview he granted some journalists before he departed from London where he attended an Anti-Corruption Summit organised by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, promised to disclose to Nigerians the amount his government had so far recovered from those who looted the nation’s treasury and their names on May 29.

The date, being Democracy Day, was when his administration clocked one.

Buhari said, “So far, what has come out; what has been recovered in whatever currency from each ministry, department and individual; I intend on the 29th to speak on these. This is because of all what Nigerians are getting from the mass media; because of the number of people arrested either by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or Department of State Services. But we want to make a comprehensive report on the 29th.”

When asked whether he would also publish the names of the looters, Buhari replied, “Yes, eventually, it has to be done because we want to successfully prosecute them. But you know you cannot go to the courts unless you have documents for prosecution. People signed for these monies into their personal accounts.”

When the Federal Government released the list on Saturday, it had only the details of funds and assets recovered and those pending locally and internationally. No name of any of those from whom the funds and assets were recovered was mentioned.

The failure to name the looters had generated widespread reactions from members of the public on Saturday.

The Nigerian Bar Association urged the President to keep his promise by releasing the names of looters.

According to the President of the NBA, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), the revelation is important for citizens to gain closure.

He said, “For us, it is always important that the promises our leaders make to the people are kept. I believe that if there is any legal impediment that prevents the President, who is a forthright person, from keeping a promise he has made to the Nigerian people, he should let Nigerians know.

“It is also important that we know the quantum of recoveries made from various persons so that it will be something that is known to every Nigerian and there would be no challenge. How did you arrive at the figures that are out there if you don’t put not just names but reasons (to the recovered loots)?

“Tomorrow, you could hear that (after) all the amounts that Mr. ‘A’ or Mr. ‘B’ looted, nothing was done. You could also start to hear that the loot recovery was only targeted at those who weren’t supporting the president.”

Alegeh noted that the only instance where the President could withhold the names was if there was a legal obstacle.

According to him, there are certain transactions with confidentiality clauses, which make it impossible for government to release the names. He said, should the government find itself in such an instance, it should say so clearly.

The Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Saturday also said there was nothing revealing in the information the government published.

The Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, told one of our correspondents that the amount released as recovered loot was less than the total amount of figures bandied about by the Federal Government and its agencies since the anti-corruption campaign began.

He said, “As far as we are concerned, there is nothing new on the list shown to Nigerians. Anybody can just put figures together. Where are the particulars of the recovery? From who were they (the loot) recovered?

“In the last one year, different rumours have been flying about with regard to those who refunded billions of naira and dollars. The figure they have released now is too opaque; it is not transparent and does not lend credence to their claims. Anybody can just write anything and throw it out (to the public).

“We need the particulars; from who were the monies recovered? If they don’t do that, then, they are just wasting our time; they are just making a mockery of the whole process. They talked about naming and shaming, let them release the names. As it is now, there is no revelation yet before Nigerians.”

Also, the Ijaw National Congress on Saturday said the inability of Buhari to mention the names of the country’s treasury looters was an indication that the President had succumbed to pressure from the looters.

The spokesman for the INC, Mr. Victor Burubo, who described the development as an anti-climax, stated that it was not the first time the President would be doing so to Nigerians.

He said, “This is not the first time they are doing this to Nigerians. In the appointment of ministers, the President said he wanted to appoint spectacular people and this took him six months. But he ended up appointing run-of-the-mill ministers.

“On the amount recovered as loot, many figures were mentioned but we have virtually nothing. If the President promised to name the looters and at the end, he could not do so, it means he has succumbed to the pressure from the looters.”

Similarly, the Ohanaeze Youth Council, the youth wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, faulted the government’s failure to disclose the identity of those that the sums were recovered from.

The President of the OYC, Mr. Okechukwu Isiguzoro, demanded full disclosure of the names of looters.

He said, “Nigerians have been anticipating the release of the looters’ list for a while now; it is disappointing that the government only came out with figures. Inasmuch as the people need to know the amount that was recovered, they should also know the identity of persons that stole the money.

“In fact, if the Federal Government is sincerely fighting corruption, it should disclose the identity of those that stole and returned money. It appears that there is a deliberate attempt to shield looters and that is totally unacceptable. Nigerian youths are not impressed.”

In the same vein, a member of the Federal Parliament in the Second Republic and Convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, stated that he had a “conflicted attitude towards the funds.”

He said, “I don’t believe what is being said to have been recovered was what was actually recovered. What was stolen was more than what was recovered. If the government is sincere about recovering the remaining money, they have to redouble their efforts in recovering, as much as possible, all that was stolen and is returned to the national treasury.

“I am not a lawyer, so I wouldn’t want to venture into a legal opinion of the status of those who have stolen the money. But if the law makes it difficult to disclose the names of those who stole the money, their identities and their names will be endangering the case itself. But, please, let the names be disclosed.”

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, dismissed the amount the government said it had recovered as far less than the true amount.

He said, “Let me tell you this: That list is not correct. I know that the EFCC has recovered about $3.1bn. I think this is just the report from a department; it is not a comprehensive one.

“The figure announced has not taken cognizance of the totality of the fund that has been recovered by all the anti-graft agencies. From the information at my disposal, the figure announced by the information minister is a fraction of what the EFCC has recovered and deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria noted that in order not to discourage more looters from returning stolen funds, the Federal Government might not want to name the looters yet.

“In fact, some of the looters who have stolen the bulk of the missing money, who are on the run, are being pursued in different jurisdictions in the world,” Falana added.

In his submission, the Executive Chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran,said that those who had returned stolen money or from whom assets were recovered should be named, shamed and prosecuted.

Adeniran asked, “Is there any attempt to cover up their atrocities? If we fight these looters and do not name them, we are allowing them to go away with the dignity they falsely acquired. They can still carry on with their lives as if nothing has ever happened to indicate that they are corrupt. People will still accord them respect. That is not fair; it does not augur well for honest, hard-working Nigerians.

“Anybody trying to cover up on this matter should be brought to book. Confessing to a crime is a first step in anti-corruption crusade; those involved should be named, shamed and prosecuted. Failure to do this will mean the government is conspiring against the society.”

Similarly, the National Association of Nigerian Students described the non-disclosure of looters’ names as a failure on the President’s part.

The President of NANS, Mr. Tijani Usman, said, “He (Buhari) has failed in his promise because he must be a man of his word and we are looking up to him as a leader that Nigerian students should emulate. If he has given us his word that on May 29, Democracy Day, he would bring out the list of looters and he has failed to do that, then where is his integrity?

“We have heard about his promise and Nigerian students are not happy with that. We are urging him to live up to his word and release the names of those looters who had stolen our country’s money.”

The presidential candidate of the KOWA Party in the 2015 election, Prof. Remi Sonaiya, also asked why the Federal Government should protect the identities of those who returned stolen funds and assets.

According to her, if the identities of suspected beneficiaries of slush funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser under Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) were not shielded, those whose loot has been recovered should not be shielded.

She said, “Just releasing a list is not sufficient, considering the suffering the entire nation has gone through. We demand more from the government. Making a list of recovered loot and stolen assets is not sufficient as a deterrent for criminals.”

A former Vice-President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Issa Aremu, described the release of the list by the Federal Government as significant and commendable.

But he said, “It is desirable to know who the looters that have returned stolen money and assets are. It will also be interesting to know those foreign government officials who aided looters to stash stolen money abroad so that Nigerians can march in protest at their embassies.”

On the list published by the Federal Government on Saturday, the administration said it had recovered a total of N115.7bn cash, while assets worth over N1.9tn had been frozen in one year.

In a statement by the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Lai Mohammed, the government said the recoveries were made between May 29, 2015 and May 25, 2016.

The government gave the breakdown of the loot as N78,325,354,631.82; $185,119,584.61; £3,508,355.46 and €11, 250.

A conversion of the funds using the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Nigeria, showed that the amount adds up to N115,792,760,499.

The statement read in part, “The Federal Government made cash recoveries totalling N78,325,354,631.82; $185,119,584.61; £3,508,355.46 and €11,250 from May 29, 2015 to May 25, 2016.”

The monies were said to have been recovered by the EFCC, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the DSS.

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government added that a separate amount of cash and assets worth over N1.9tn had also been seized. However, the properties and cash are under legal contention.

The assets and cash seized under interim forfeiture totalled $9bn; N126bn; £2.4m and €303,399.

A conversion of the worth of assets and cash seized based on the official CBN exchange rate totalled: N1,918,113,864,063.

It added, “Recoveries under Interim Forfeiture (cash and assets) during the period totalled N126,563,481,095.43; $9,090,243,920.15; £2,484,447.55 and €303,399.17.”

The government added that funds awaiting return from foreign jurisdictions totalled $321,316,726.1; £6,900,000 and €11,826.11.

The statement added that 239 non-cash recoveries such as farmlands, plots of land, uncompleted buildings, completed buildings, vehicles and maritime vessels were also seized during the period.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Right Accountability Project on Saturday said the Buhari-led administration should expedite legal action against all looters in a bid to make their identities known.

The Executive Director of SERAP, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, noted that the government should prosecute those who had been investigated and found to have looted the nation’s treasury, in order to avoid political witch-hunting.

He said, “Investigations should have been concluded now. You cannot say you recovered money and since then, you have not done any investigation, such that their (looters’) arraignment in court will then be delayed. I don’t think that would be justice.

“What the President should do is direct the Attorney General to hasten the process for the looters to be prosecuted. It is when we start seeing convictions from the court that we know that they’ve actually committed the offence; that is what the Nigerian constitution demands.”

Gunmen kill naval officer, 18 others in Rivers

Gunmen suspected to be cult members on Saturday killed 19 persons in Aluu community in Ikwerre Local Government Area and Obite community in Etche council area of Rivers State.

A naval officer was among those killed when members of two cult groups stormed the communities and engaged each other in a free-for-all.

The gunmen, believed to be of Greenlanders cult, invaded Aluu in reprisal against a rival group, Icelanders and killed 15 persons, including a nursing mother.

A naval personnel, who was among the Joint Task Force team that went to the area to bring the situation under control, was hit by a bullet from the cultists.

Many others were injured during the attack in the Aluu community.

It was gathered that the cult members also killed some innocent persons and left several others with bullet wounds.

Some of the cult members also stormed Etche community and killed four persons, a community source, who witnessed the shootings.

It was learnt that the gunmen invaded a superstore in Omuoda village, opened fire and killed several people.

The bandits later advanced to Omuahunwo village and killed four of their victims who were suspected to be cultists.

Our correspondents gathered that the assailants carried out the coordinated attacked based on information that some members of the Icelanders were taking refuge in Aluu. The incident left the residents of the area in anxiety as some people in the affected communities fled their homes.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Some cult members believed to be members of Greenlanders entered the community and killed some people. The boys operated in a very terrible manner. They went to a supermarket where people usually go to buy something and opened fire on over six people.

“Some people narrowly escaped with gun wounds. We do not know the cause of the killings, although we suspected that it is a cult war.’’

In Obite, four persons suspected to be members of the Greenlanders were allegedly killed by the Icelanders.

A source in the area said the cult group invaded Obite at 8am on Saturday, destroyed and looted many property in the community.

“At the moment, people are running away and nobody knows who is who. The cult boys entered the community by 8am and started shooting the people they described as their enemies.

“The Icelanders boys were the ones that shot the Degbam boys, but the fear now is that the Degbam cult group has written a letter to the community, asking the residents to flee because they are going to revenge,’’ a source said.

When contacted, the Caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Mr. Samuel Nwanosike, stated that the reports about the incident were overblown.

Nwanosike stressed that the government had swiftly responded to the situation and restored normalcy in the area.

The council chairman, who visited the area with some security personnel, stated that the bandits had been chased out of the community.

Nwanosike added that soldiers raided some hideouts in the area and rescued a victim, Kenneth Wobunwo, who was abducted two weeks ago. Wobunwo is the paramount ruler of Aluu community.

Nwanosike, however, confirmed that some of the hoodlums, who caused that unrest in the area, had been arrested during the security intervention.

When contacted, the state Assistant Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Grace Iringe-Koko, said she had not been briefed about the incident.

But a security source, spoke on condition of anonymity, told that a naval officer was killed during the incident.

The new militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, that has intensified attacks on the nation’s oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, said on Saturday that it would not kill or kidnap anybody.

It also warned other militant groups in the region to desist from killing soldiers and oil workers as not to offend God in their mission to ‘liberate the people of the region.’

The group advised the public to be wary of suspected fraudsters who now parade themselves as representatives or spokespersons for the group.

NDA, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Brig. Gen. Mudoch Agbinibo and emailed to our correspondent, urged the people “to be strong and resolute as it is obvious that God is on our side.”

While condemning the recent killing of some soldiers and oil workers in Niger Delta, the group added that the heavy military presence in the region would not tempt it to kill in order not to derail from its agenda.

It stated, “The avengers are calling on all groups in the region to be strong and resolute as it is obvious that God is on our side.

“The high command of the avengers is calling on all not to attack any soldier and those claiming to have anti-aircraft missiles should desist from targeting any aircraft. Let us be careful not to offend God in the process of trying to liberate our people from the shackles of the Nigerian government because we need God more than anything now.’’

The statement also indicated that since the military warplanes hovering over towns and villages in the region had not destroyed any property or killed anybody, militants groups with ‘anti-aircraft missiles should dry their gunpowder.’

“When it is time to engage the military in a combat, the whole world will know they started the war and not the avengers,’’ the statement added.

Meanwhile, at least one person was killed and many injured in renewed hostilities between Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in Delta State over a lingering boundary dispute.

The dead person was said to be indigene of Aladja.

While Aladja is a community in Udu Local Council Area, Ogbe-Ijoh is the headquarters of Warri South-West.

Many residents, especially women and children, fled to neigbouring communities for safety.

The Secretary, Ogbe-Ijoh Warri Governing Council, Aaron Oweizi-Ebiye, told journalists on Saturday that the incident was caused by youths from Aladja community who he accused of invading Ogbe-Ijoh community.

Reacting, Chairman, Aladja Governing Council, Dogene Elias, faulted Oweizi-Ebiye’s claim, saying Ogbe-Ijoh youths started attacking the community on Wednesday.

Last week, the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, inaugurated an eight-man panel of inquiry to find a solution to the lingering land dispute between the two communities.

Efforts to speak with the acting spokesman for Delta State Police Command, Charles Muka, were futile as he did not pick calls made to his mobile phone.

300 Houses Submerged, As River Benue Overflows Its Banks

MAKURDI—A sudden surge in the water level of River Benue has left over 300 houses and huts submerged, with many families rendered homeless in Makurdi, the state capital.
The unexpected flood, which also swept away property and valuables worth millions of Naira, may have created a major humanitarian crisis in the town and it’s environs.

Among the worst hit areas are Wurukum, Wadata Rice Mill, Agboughoul, Kutcha Utebe and Gydo Villa area settlements, while all the buildings that are less than 500 meters from the shore of the river and those directly behind the New Garage Road are also facing the prospect of going under the fast rising river.

One of the victims and resident of Wadata Rice Mill settlement, John Agboyi, said residents of the area were taken aback by the unanticipated flood.

“Its strange, we went to bed last night, only to wake up this morning to discover that flood water has overtaken our homes and neighbourhood, all we did was to battle to rescue some of our property from the fast rising flood water,” he said.

At Kutcha Utebe where families were seen moving their property from their homes, a resident, Terhile Fidelis, said the flood washed away most of his property before he could mobilize enough support and help to move them away.

He said: “My worry is that I do not have anywhere to go to with my family at the moment. I just can’t understand why this sudden rise in water levels cannot be adequately tackled by the government.”
Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr. Nick Wende, on the issue failed as he did not pick his calls nor reply to the message sent to his phone.

Buhari And Women: Is He Shy, Coy Or Con?

Whether a Freudian Slip or not, the assertion by an unrecognised presidential aide that President Muhammadu Buhari is shy around women has again captivated the imaginations of Nigerians on the persona of the president.

Though presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina was quick to disown the supposed aide, and also deny his claim, the issue has refused to die.
However, the facts speak for itself on the issue.

Against the estimated 31% involvement of women at the onset of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2011, President Buhari on his part, has started his course with what many are protesting as a miserly 17%. Even worse, the incumbent has proved even more restrained in appointing women into other executive positions.

The president’s supposed disinclination towards the feminine gender was foretold before the presidential election. Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of President Jonathan had warned women that Buhari if elected would reverse the gains achieved by her husband in lifting the number of women among the nation’s decision makers.

Remarkably, the issue is one that is being discussed with hushed tones especially among APC members, especially those who supported the president.

Some others, it would seem, would want to live in denial like Mrs. Sharon Ikeazor, one of the leading female enthusiasts of the president.

Contacted on the issue at the weekend on phone, Ikeazor sternly fired back charging that the media should rather face issues of priority to the nation especially the case of the Internally Displaced Persons.

But not so for Mrs Hauwa Shekarau, Country Vice President, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), who accuses the president of betraying the support given him by women during the election.

“The past administration has set a record in terms of appointment of women into key decision making positions.

“We expect the new government to even do more but we are getting below 10 per cent and truly it is a complete marginalisation of women and in this 21st century it is unacceptable,” she said in a statement.

Akpabio: EFCC grills ex-gov's petitioner

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has interrogated Mr. Leo Ekpeyong, an Abuja-based lawyer who wrote a petition against the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The Commission invited Ekpeyong for questioning on Monday, October 26.

Ekpeyong had accused Akpabio of diverting huge funds belonging to Akwa Ibom state when he was governor.
The allegations had necessitated the EFCC to invite Akpabio on October 16, 2015.

Supreme Court Delivers Judgment On Wike’s Appeal Today

The Supreme court will on Tuesday deliver a judgment on whether or not the Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which nullified the election of Governor Nyesom Wike on Saturday had the jurisdiction to hear the case against the governor.

The Justice Mohammed Ambrosa-led tribunal had on Saturday nullified Wike’s election as it upheld allegations by the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, that the election which held on April 11, 2015 was conducted in substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

But Saturday’s judgment would amount to nullity if the Supreme court holds on Tuesday that the proceedings of the tribunal had been conducted without requisite jurisdiction.

Wike and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had in an appeal filed before the Supreme Court, challenged the jurisdiction of the tribunal on the grounds of its relocation from Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, where the election took place, to Abuja.

The appellants argued that the tribunal lacked territorial jurisdiction to hear the petition by the APC and Peterside in Abuja.

Dissatisfied with the ruling of the tribunal which affirmed that its relocation to Abuja because of security concerns was in order, Wike had appealed to the Court of Appeal.

The governor, who lost the appeal at the Court of Appeal, took his appeal to the Supreme Court.

A panel of the Supreme court led by Justice John Fabiyi, had on October 16, heard the appeal by Wike and adjourned till Tuesday for judgment.

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who exercises administrative powers on election petition tribunals in the country, had directed the relocation of the sittings of the tribunals in Rivers, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba states to to Abuja due to security concerns in the states.

But Wike had contended that the tribunal lacked the territorial jurisdiction to hear the petition in Abuja.

Wike challenged the powers of the President of the Court of Appeal to order the tribunal’s relocation to Abuja.

The governor argued that the tribunal’s relocation to Abuja was in breach of Section 285 (2) of the Nigerian Constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010.

He urged the tribunal to relocate to Port Harcourt in compliance with provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act.

The tribunal then led by Justice Mu’azu Pindiga, who later handed over to Justice Ambrosa, had in a ruling on July 27, 2015 dismissed Wike’s motion.

Justice Pindiga held that contrary to Wike’s argument, the tribunal had not violated any provision of the law since the relocation to Abuja was for security reasons.

The judge faulted Wike’s argument that proximity and accessibility were major determining factors in deciding the venue of a tribunal.

Justice Pindiga held that proximity and accessibility could not be determined in the absence of security for the tribunal members and litigants.

He said the President of the Appeal Court acted within the ambit of the law, which emphasises the need for a proper atmosphere for the tribunal to hold its proceedings.

He held that the tribunal had not violated any provision of the law since the relocation to Abuja was for security reasons.

Osinbajo: How undergraduates stole N8m from law firm allegedly owned by VP

Reports say two undergraduates of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, Ebuka Orumba and Patrick Nwafor, have been identified as the duo that hacked Simmons Cooper Partner.
Daily Post reports that they allegedly stole N8m from the law firm allegedly owned by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
According to Daily Post, the duo, after successfully hacking into the firm’s network, sent a mail to Osinbajo’s bank account manager, on July 2nd, 2015, asking him to disburse money to three different accounts.

The bubble however burst, when their accomplice, Artor Kalu was nabbed by men from the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, while trying to withdraw N3m from one of the accounts, opened with the false name, Engineer Asukwo Okoro.

Metuh: Group cautions PDP scribe over comments on Rivers tribunal verdict

The Governance Watch Initiative (GWI), has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), spokesman, Olisa Metuh, over his statements concerning the Rivers election tribunal verdict, calling on PDP supporters to rise up.

According to Daily Post, National Coordinator, Rotimi Ogunwuyi, in a statement said, “We have also noticed a series of unwarranted attacks against our nation’s judiciary by Chief Metuh and his party, an attack that was carried to a disturbing level in Sunday’s statement."

The group also said “We recall that when Chibuike Amaechi, then of the PDP, was pronounced as the Governor of Rivers State by the Supreme Court in October 2007, even when he did not contest that year’s governorship election since his name had been substituted by his party, the PDP did not think the judiciary was being used by the PDP-led Federal Government of the time."

The Kano State ex-Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, while speaking to newsmen at Ibadan, said asking the Fulani herdsmen to leave the South-West, is not the solution.

Sun Newspapers reports that Kwankwaso said “It is not only peculiar to the South-West. We just have to have a lot of understanding of the situation. Some of the issues being raised by the people, especially politicians, do not help anybody. If you sack the Fulani from here or you fight them, maybe it is because you are here. If you are a Yoruba man based in Kano, I don’t think you can contemplate sacking the Fulani. I am from Kano, but right now, I am in Ibadan. Where you are is your home. Today, Ibadan is my home. God forbid, if something bad happens here, it will affect me. If it happens in my village, I am not there; they won’t see me.”
