SEMG Lullabiathalon WINNERS Announcement!

The Lullabiathalon generated a wealth of instrumental cradle songs for kids and adults alike!
An effective lullaby should comfort the listener and aid drifting into sleep (perchance to dream) and as such avoids jarring sounds, complex harmonies, strong attacks and so on. They have simple and fairly prominent melodies. They tend to be melodic but not overly complex, with 2 or 3 chords often fulfilling the melodic requirements.

Another very difficult contest to judge here, I wish there were 6+ winning placements! I'll say that I got a strong impression that a few artists either knew or spent some time researching what makes a lullaby a lullaby technically. It is after all a distinct form/genre and the 3 winners have all captured the essence and expressed it in creative and compelling fashion.

So here are the winners of the Lullabiathalon event of the 2009 Summer Electronic Music Games.

brainworks - Daddy's Right Here :: wonderfully melodic & gentle. Maintains soothing lullaby quality throughout. Storylike� lulling� almost became Right Here Waiting at 4:47(!! Eek!) but thankfully it was just part of 1 chord progression ;) Excellent creative use of chord progressions and time signatures which definitely enhance the overall entering the dreamtime effect. The mixing is smooth and each sound is wonderfully clear and rich through both tracks. Solid entry in a classic form convincingly conducive to drifting into dreamland.

ShardiksWalkman - Lulle Culotte :: very musically accomplished and delightful, irresistably compelling piano and bell melodies. I asked my wife if the first one sounded more like dinner music than lullaby music as I couldn't drop that idea... and she said� hmm� it's like� and I had a flash of insight to her thoughts and said "smooth jazz!" - YES she says. So that kinda backed up the dinner music idea I had going on already... which might not be lullaby.... now I struggled with this for a week, really and decided to reward rather than pick on the genre, if there is a genre 6 degrees from Lullaby it may well be smooth jazz (god knows it puts me to sleep). The second piece I can say no more than all the right notes, tones, textures in all the right places and the right glisteningly smooth clean mix ensured your place in the top 3 and in my opinion is easily among the most beautiful entries this entire SEMG. The slight bit of drama mid track 2 nearly takes it off topic for this competition, but the return at 8:13 brings it back on course. This borders on too jazzy sometimes, too dramatic at others... but not enough to miss the top 3

Venomeza - Serenus Venia - Rails :: very creative and somewhat daring entry! Visions of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood dancing through my head with that vibe lead at around 1 minute. The first track in this entry is spot on. The track description is taken into account for the second track and makes good sense� it works, and what a lovely waltz the second track becomes.... this is quite brilliant and although strange because of the creative difference compared to other entries, and almost using the track description and going 'soundtrack' instead of pure lullaby, I hear nothing that takes away from the lullaby-ness of this entry as a whole. I like that you slant the dreamer (I say dreamer because I agree with the track description that the first track and start of the second does the trick) toward pleasant dreams... I see the subject sleeping with a very content smile by the end of this track. Nicely done. If sz puts out a lullabiathalon cd (which I'd love to do) this will be my choice for the closing track on it. Congrats, you're envelope pushing payed off here ;)

Some general comments by eman8ions on the other entries:

337music - Clink Clank Clunk :: very good composition, smart music! 1st track is a bit spooky for a lullaby esp the wracheting sound. 2nd track was very dream inducing.

jjb13 - Theta Wave/Delta Wave :: The second track had me drifting off for sure with a plush array of sounds/textures and simple repetetive theme while I found the first track not as conducive to drifting into dreamland. Great overall sounds and composition, pleasing to listen to.

dreambuilder - Kids it's Time for Bed/Absynthian Dreams :: both nice calm ambient works with a rich sound palatte and mixing. Although it's very relaxing I don't have a sense of being drawn or lulled to sleep, perhaps due to the consistent beat or bright production� not sure� but the chord progressions do have a bit of that lulling going on... just not quite enough!

Torsal - Roads Unwound :: A good lullaby makes you 'slow down' and focus within and I find your 2 tracks here do that well, the first more than the second with perhaps the hard snare taking away from the second track - a softer snare would bring it to another lullaby level. This was a very strong competitor for 3rd place.

mad_wasd - Subnova / Too late :: This music definitely passes as lullaby music. Slow, sure and gentle, not demanding attention - not as lulling as it could be in Subnova because as it build there is a feeling of drama or majesty and I find that more stimulating than lulling.

The beginning has a feeling of raising curiosity which can be counter lullaby if too much... but it moves to fulfilling the curiousity fairly nicely when the glock comes in. It's putting me to sleep, and in this case that's a very good thing ;) At 7 minutes, even though this is where the beat comes in, it's where I feel it's most lullaby like.

FiligreeFire - Songs for Post-Apocalyptic Children :: deep trippy trance inducing rocking cradle sound really defines the first part - that is one of the trippiest sounds I've heard lately especially coupled with the theme. Hey this is kind of a scary lullaby� that can work though (in 'the nightmare before christmas!), I used to go to sleep listening to blistering psytrance so if I could do that I guess one could lullaway into this ominous lullavibe. - 2nd track - "...sing ancient songs to children lulling them into an uneasy peace." - wellllllll I'd have to call it an uneasy... uneasiness.... definitely ;)

brb - For The Lulz / For The Lullabies :: Parent Genre very classically lullaby like in melody & feel from the start, beautiful. Classic lullaby/bercuese form with the 6/8 time sig. Second track brought Enya to my mind, which is not bad in the context of this contest... lots of christmas carol sound in the harp, almost too much at some points, not that christmas songs can't be lullabies. With the harp leading the melody it sounds like a dreamy dance.... all very lulling... very simple and melodic, nicely executed.

Mad Hamish - Four Part Harmony/ Numb :: the musical meshing of melodies and various high frequency textures is pleasing, gentle and comforting. Very nice piano where it appears. Very cushy bass to sink into, that's nice� (omg I just felt like Bob Ross there). There is an ominous feeling at the beginning and the key and progressions though rich and lovely, generate a tension and to my ear these things make this gem more of a dreamy ambient work than a lullaby per se. I must say though, that the tension is briefly beautifully resolved at 3:25 before going back into it. To me this music is more meditative than lullaby - more conducive to zoning out than lulling bye.... Really lovely and professional sounding production, this goes in my listening collection.

profet - The Velveteen Bed Set :: The simple song structure is good, this is after all a lullaby contest and lullabies tend to have a simple structure. I'm not fond of the hard attack on a many sounds, the piano and the glock, as it would seem more appropriate to go for soft & gentle for a lullaby. I wonder if there are lullabies for the harpsicord? ... This is however the winner for the most creative title & description which I enjoy a lot and will net profet a cool Loopmasters sample CD of his choice.

Nuff Said - Lull a Bye Bye :: First track was among the most classic lullaby sounding entries, so beautiful and gentle that I, like you, puked with joy! No really, I love it and was pleasantly surprised at the loveliness of it. Good to push your boundaries, just remember to keep hydrated if puking for extended periods of time! The second track is also very nicely done really, though disappointingly is far less lullaby like and seems to take away from the initial major contender vibe. I think following a form more like the first track would have been better choice, but I also think the second track is more your kind of vibe and good to be different from the first track so no fault there. Nicely done.

Hey gang, Z here. My first post in a very long time but actually I am not here to post any musings of my own but those of David Ballard, Lead Audio Engineer at Metamoorephosis Games. Metamoorephosis is a video game development company and is the latest project I am working on. David was particularly inspired to write about his experience in meeting me and how it tied back to the SectionZ community which he hopes to work with for years to come.Thanks for listening:

When I began my education in game development at Flashpoint Academy in the fall of 2007, it soon became clear to me that I had no talent in the realm of visual art or programming. But having a few years of self-taught musicianship under my belt, I felt fairly comfortable taking on the role of sound designer/musician. How hard could making a few sound effects be? That question led to the beginning of my journey down the path of game audio.

Near the end of development of StarHerder, my first video game ever, was when I had the pleasure of meeting Josh Hernandez � aka �Z.� He was a newbie at Flashpoint, and he was snooping around our project � looking for ways to get involved. So, my first impression of Z was dodgy to say the least. If I knew then what I now know, I would have accepted him right away (after all, the guy was just looking for some talent!). Over time, Z and I got to know each other fairly well. As soon as he learned I was a musician (working mostly in Reason 3.0 at that time), he introduced me to SectionZ.com, which provided a catalyst for our friendship and future work together.

I can recall many a work session in the game lab at school when Z and I would be cruising through SectionZ �As a result, I discovered some great musicians and had newfound determination to improve my own musical ability, which was great since SectionZ users are not afraid to give you some tough criticism. SectionZ is also where we discovered Robert Clouth, whose music is now featured in our first professional release bitFLIP � A synaesthetic, multiplayer puzzle game for the iPhone. Before long, Z and I formed a strong bond through the common interest of video games and music. We introduced each other to new artists, and frequently discussed different ways to use music in more interesting, interactive ways for games. Fast forward two years, and here he we are doing just that at Metamoorephosis (www.metamoorephosis.com). Our debut title, bitFLIP is probably one of the most audio/music-heavy games available on the app store. Using eight tracks from Robert Clouth as the sonic framework for the game, I built a system of sound effects which constantly reinforce the music (see a video demo here -�http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27yz4TJh-xY). Every time a game piece falls onto the board, it triggers a musical note that compliments the track playing in that level, and when the player activates a power-up, the music is enhanced by a set of DSPs for the duration of the special.�

bitFLIP is a perfect example of the creativity fostered by the SectionZ community. We have a fantastic team, each member capable of bringing great ideas to the table, but for this project SectionZ was a vital piece of the puzzle (pun intended). Thanks to the constant source of inspiration this community has provided, I believe we have put a game together that can be enjoyed by anyone, but loved by people like you.I look forward to working with as many as you as possible in the future.

Last Saturday, Oct 3 2009, we took a trip to San Francisco to see the LovEvolution 2009 parade (formerly LovFest). The event was outstanding with some amazing floats and a couple of stand-out drum 'n' bass floats which were fantastic. I really think drum 'n' bass is starting to take hold in the US, which really excites me!

The floats make their way up market street carnival style, starting at 12 noon, towards the main event area outside city hall. The event was $10 each this year to cover city hall costs, but it was well worth it. The main event area was packed by about 3pm and the whole place was going crazy.

It's never fun for me to have to choose one track over another especially with so many fanTAZtic entries.
This contest was perhaps the most remembered of the 2004 SEMG and is surely a classic sectionz.com contest after this years super sweet collection of entries.

Personally, I have to refrain from picking runners up because there are TOO many to mention and I would surely go into a severe depression trying to only pick one or a few, but that said... the other judges did all have Jackfruit [5k Run] (ModdJobs) & Forest Edge (H2O) in their top 5 and there was a mention of Remade Toys (drhqnril) and I'd Walk Them Five Times Over (brainworks) the melodies to which will just not leave my brain.

1) My fave has to be the Tefnek remix. It's sooooo cool!! What I liked about this was that the remixer turned it into something COMPLETELY different. I never imagined for a minute that we'd get a rock version!! Great energy, really catchy, and just an extremely accomplished remix. Winner!!

The other two that I loved were the Electroredux remodelling and the Normandie remix. Electroredux particularly was really clever and quirky. It had some lovely touches and was very original. It just didn't have the same impact on me as the ones in the top three.

One Note Marathon - READ ME

Hi SectionZ members, guests and SEMG.2009 sponsors!

This posting is to clarify and make explicit the rules for the One Note Marathon as it can be hard to get for many (according to the talk & evidence we've seen so far!)

You may ONLY trigger ONE NOTE... ever, in the entire track.

** This means if you exported a midi file of the track... it would only show 1 note, obviously at the very beginning.

** It means you may not add beats if they require any more triggers than the 1 note

** It means the entire 2.5 to 6 minutes must be knob twiddling or... anything other than triggering any other note, or playing any samples...

"Well how the hell am I supposed to make a song out of that?" you ask?

Well that is the challenge!!!

If your track sounds like more than 1 midi note was triggered or 1 note was played, you will be required to explain how you did it, and possibly to submit the original project file, in order for judges to be sure that it fits the rules.

May the best one note win ;)

SEMG Inaugural Track Deadline Extended by 1 week

Considering the very limited time frame posted for entering the Inaugural Track event, and in response to member suggestions the deadline for entries is being extended to July 6,2009.

As in all the events, you are able and allowed to update your uploaded tracks until the closing date for entries.

Over $50,000 in Prizes to be Awarded During the SEMG

The 2009 Summer Electronic Music Games begin this weekend with the announcement of full contest rules for 3 events including the Inaugural Track (obviously) which will become the SEMG.2009 theme song.

After the first round of contests there will be a live streamed web radio show with entries played and results and winners announced. I also hope to reveal the next set of contests and rules in those live shows before publishing that information here on the site.

Due to the generous and exciting volume of prizes donated to these competitions you can expect to see prize packages in the thousands of dollars awarded for first and many hundreds for second & third place.
