1. La ciudad amurallada de Cartagena

Sí, es algo obvio… ¡pero eso no significa que sea malo! Las calles empedradas, toques de color, y los restaurantes de lujo de la ciudad caribeña más simbólica de Colombia han atraído desde hace tiempo las parejas de todo el mundo esperando recrear ese ambiente de ‘El amor en los tiempos del cólera’… sin el cólera. 

Caminar por las calles empedradas de día, disfrutando de las iglesias y museos, luego sentarse en una mesa en uno de los pequeños restaurantes de Cartagena y disfrutar de una cena romántica; tal vez terminar con unos cócteles en las murallas de la ciudad antes de regresar al hotel boutique que hayan elegido… ¡El sueño de un romántico! 2. Las EcoHabs del Parque Tayrona

Posiblemente el hotel más romántico en Colombia (aunque mi única visita fue con mis padres y yo dormía en un colchón demasiado pequeño en el suelo, por lo que no había mucho romance para todos los involucrados), los Ecohabs son esas pequeñas cabañas con techo de paja situadas atractivamente en los acantilados cubiertos de selva con vistas sobre las playas del Caribe en el Parque Nacional Tayrona. 

Cada cabaña tiene una hermosa vista al mar, zona de terraza independiente con hamacas y una amplia y lujosa habitación. Los Ecohabs también tienen una playa semi-privada, un excelente restaurante y un spa. Me imagino que su Día de San Valentín va más o menos así: despertar, desayuno en la cama, día en la playa, un breve descanso para tratamientos de spa en pareja, una lujosa cena de mariscos, puesta de sol en el balcón con un par de cócteles… Debería hacer esto para ganarme la vida… o conseguir un poco de dinero y una novia…

3. Barichara

Personalmente esto estaría más arriba (tal vez de primero) en mi lista de lugares románticos para el Día de San Valentín en Colombia – Barichara es todo lo que a Cartagena le falta en cuanto a  mi idea de romance: es tranquilo… en realidad, ¡eso es todo!

Mucho más que un destino para una excursión de un día, las suavemente iluminadas calles empedradas y fachadas blancas de Barichara se vuelven virtualmente abandonadas después del anochecer y, con una gran cantidad de hoteles boutique encantadores y varios lugares lindos y románticos, deambular por los callejones históricos de Barichara podría ser el día perfecto de un San Valentín en paz.

4. Bailar salsa en Cali

Un pequeño cambio de ritmo después del romance tranquilo de los lugares anteriores en la lista, pero para algunas parejas este podría ser el plan perfecto para gozar celebrar el amor a punta de Salsa y sabrosura en la sucursal del cielo – encontrar un buen hotel en esta ciudad dinámica, ponerse ropa elegante y zapatos de baile, y salir por la noche a una discoteca clásica de salsa de la vieja escuela para bailar toda la noche en la ciudad donde el amor por la salsa supera todo lo demás. 

Lugares como Bar Latino, La Matraca, o El Rincón de la Salsa mantienen ese viejo espíritu vivo, y representan un lugar verdaderamente romántico para amantes de la música: beber algunas cervezas frías, tomar unos shots de ron y ¡bailar hasta que no puedan más! 5. Mompós

Lo sé, mi versión de romance hasta ahora es en gran parte una bastante perezosa y tranquila… pero, bueno, la mayoría de las personas no consideran el bungee una actividad realmente romántica, así que ¡demándenme! De todos modos, Mompós es el lugar perfecto para celebrar el amor a orillas del rio: alojarse en La Casa Amarilla, con su encantador patio y habitaciones románticas, y pasar la noche disfrutando de un poco de jazz y unas cuantas cervezas frías en una de las preciosas plazas de la ciudad junto al río. Puede ser un Día de San Valentín en Colombia poco típico del que (si todo sale bien) les van a contar a sus nietos…

6. Isla Múcura

¡Volvimos a las playas, pero esta vez es en una isla del Caribe! Isla Múcura hace parte del Archipiélago de San Bernardo y está dominada por el lujoso hotel Punta Faro, un hotel cinco estrellas con una playa privada, delicioso menú del restaurante a base de pescados y mariscos, y un spa en una cabaña de techo de paja y descubierta por un lado con vista al mar. 

Pueden descansar en la playa durante el día, tomando piñas coladas bajo las sombrillas del mar Caribe (foto arriba) y, por la noche, tomar un barco a la cercana isla de Tintipan para una sorpresa súper romántica del Día de San Valentín: nadar con plancton bioluminiscente, que brilla y se ilumina mientras se desplazan por el agua oscura… mi consejo: dibujen a su pareja un corazón con plancton vivo e iluminado: ¡eso dará puntos instantáneos por originalidad!

7. Providencia

Otra isla del Caribe, Providencia tiene un ambiente más relajado y tradicional en el Caribe que Isla Múcura, pero un poco más que hacer siendo una isla más grande con una ciudad y todo. 

Con un montón de hoteles encantadores junto a la playa con vista a las aguas cristalinas, y algunas de las mejores playas y sitios para el buceo de Colombia, Providencia sería un excelente lugar para pasar el Día de San Valentín en Colombia – pasar el día conduciendo un carrito de golf entre las playas de postal, haciendo una pausa para mariscos y cócteles, tomar un viaje en barco a la isla de Cayo Cangrejo para caretear (y cócteles), luego disfrutar de una cena con velas, seguido por unos cócteles en Reggae Bar de Roland en la playa (que también podría tener algunos cócteles en la cena)… ahora solo estoy pensando en cócteles… ¡Pero estoy seguro de que les va a encantar!

8. Una finca en el Eje cafetero

Esto es bastante diferente a los anteriores lugares románticos, pero bueno, ¡sudar bajo el sol del Caribe no es para todos! Los departamentos del Eje cafetero Quindío, Risaralda y Caldas están llenos de espectaculares hoteles boutique en las fincas antiguas de café: el murmullo de los arroyos, colinas verdes, viejos campesinos con sombreros y cobijas de lana al lado de una fogata caliente, además de muchos otros clichés, pero ya entienden lo que quiero decir.

Les recomiendo especialmente la Finca El Ocaso en Salento o Hacienda Venecia cerca de Manizales en Caldas – ambas son fincas cafeteras en funcionamiento y el alojamiento es en una antigua casa tradicional, con un balcón para una película. Den un paseo por los jardines, vean los colibríes en la veranda con una taza el porche con una humeante taza fresca de café, disfruten de una cena de truchas y luego se acurrucan bajo una cobija grande en una antigua cama con dosel… romántico, ¿cierto?

9. Desierto de la Tatacoa

Bueno el desierto parece que no es un lugar muy romántico, pero están equivocados, ¿listo? Es broma, pero en serio, el desierto de la Tatacoa probablemente podría ser uno de los lugares más románticos en esta lista por una razón clave… ¡Las estrellas!

Brief History

The islands were discovered by Fray Tomás de Berlanga in 1535 after King Charles V ordered him to travel to Peru to report on the situation in the colony. However, the strong ocean currents diverted him from his route, forcing him to dock on the islands.

In 1570 they were annexed to the world atlas by the cartographer Abraham Ortelius, baptizing them with the name “insulae de Los Galapagos” because the shape of the tortoise shells reminded him of the English saddles, known as Galapagos in Spanish. The name stuck, even after they were renamed “the archipelago of Ecuador” in 1832 when the islands were annexed to the new republic founded by Bolivar.

The islands became known worldwide after Charles Darwin visited them in 1935 and observed that the beaks of the finches (birds) were different on each island and thus began to shape his theory on the evolution of species.

Today they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Galapagos archipelago has 13 islands, all of them of volcanic origin, at least 8 of them have presented constant volcanic activity throughout history, which is why the archipelago is considered one of the most active volcanic zones in the world.

Darwin’s Arch 

Located at Darwin island, here you will find the largest biomass of sharks ever seen in the world. Darwin’s Arch is considered an icon for diving and although the rock formation that formed the arch collapsed in May 2021, this site continues to be a reference for expert divers. It is called an underwater theater, as it allows you to stay attached to the rocks to admire the amazing life under the sea.

Pinnacle Rock

A true gem, on pinnacle Rock you can see Galapagos penguins swimming under the water while snorkeling. ( is that it is the only species of penguin that may be found north of the equatorial line). Also if you are lucky enough you can you can live a lifetime experience swimming along playful sea lions. Pinnacle rock also is home to a wide tropical fish and white-tipped sharks

Kicker Rock

It is located near San Cristobal Island and is another of the most iconic islets of the Galapagos.  Among its rocky formation is an exceptional channel for scuba diving, divers make dives between these majestic walls to discover impressive marine fauna.

You can see different species of sharks such as: hammerhead, black tip, and Galapagos sharks; sea turtles and unique colorful fish swimming near the wall of the islet, certainly a spectacle that makes divers return again and again.

Gordon Rocks

If you want to live the experience of diving next to schools of hammerhead sharks, Gordon Rocks are the right place. It is an extinct volcanic cone formed by three rocks that protrude from the surface and provide an unusual island landscape. Due to the depths and currents, Gordon Rocks is ideal for experienced divers.

There are also possibilities to observe Galapagos sharks, sea lions, and rays, among other species. To get to this site you must take a tour that departs from Santa Cruz Island.

Gardner Bay

Located on Española Island, Gardner bay offers the possibility to snorkel from the stunning white beach full of sea lions. From parrot fish to sea turtles and rays, Gardner bay is the perfect place to learn snorkel, clear and calm water makes it easy to see all underwater life

Tagus Cove

Endemic species from Galapagos 

Here are some of the endemic wildlife that inhabited the Galapagos Islands 

Marine Iguana 

It is a species endemic to the Galapagos Islands; this reptile has the unique ability to live and hunt food in the sea. For this reason, it can dive up to 10 meters in the ocean and, as a cold-blooded animal, its color is very dark. The tail is flat, which allows them to swim easily through the waters of the Enchanted Islands.

The flightless cormorant is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and is the only cormorant in the world that cannot fly. This web-footed bird hunts for food near the bottom of the ocean and feeds on fish, eels, and octopuses. The feathers are not waterproof, so the flightless cormorant spends much of its time drying its feathers. This unique bird is only found on Fernandina and Isabela Islands.

Blue-footed Booby

The blue-footed booby is an intriguing bird characterized by its blue webbed feet. The name “booby” was coined based on the Spanish term “bobo”, meaning “foolish”. The blue-footed booby can be found on many of the islands of the archipelago. Their diet consists of small marine animals, and they are often observed dive-bombing to hunt their food. Males are known for their mating ritual through which they attract mates.

Giant tortoise

It is the largest species of turtle, adults can weigh more than 440 kilos and measure more than 1.8 meters in length. In nature, these giant tortoises have life cycles of more than 100 years, making them one of the longest-lived vertebrates. Individuals in captivity have lived more than 170 years. Galapagos giant tortoises are interesting because, like many animals in the archipelago, they have adapted to the unique environments of each island; therefore, different subspecies are found on different islands. In 1700, the Giant Tortoise suffered a drastic population decline due to pirates and visitors hunting the tortoises and using them for oil.

Galapagos shark

is commonly observed in clear reef environments and can grow up to 3.7 meters and is commonly found distributed in large groups. It is also a predatory species, and feeds on bottom-dwelling fish; however, larger individuals may have a more varied diet, including other sharks, marine iguanas, sea lions, and human waste.

Land Iguana

It is endemic to the island and can be found in most of the archipelago. Its size and color vary according to each island due to the adaptation process they have undergone. Isabela Island is home to the largest land iguanas in Galapagos; this species feeds mainly on cacti, where they find a great source of fresh water. The Galapagos land iguana has a lifespan of approximately 50-60 years.

Lava Gull 

The lava gull is a large bird endemic to the Galapagos Islands, where the entire population is found and is estimated at around 300-400 pairs. Adults have dark gray plumage with a white belly and a distinct bright orange ring around their eyes. These gulls swim alongside ships in the Galapagos Islands, where they are better able to hunt squid when the water breaks, allowing for greater visibility.

Galapagos Falcon 

Although small in number (approximately 150 pairs live on the Islands), this bird is not considered endangered. Endemic to the Galapagos Islands it is at the top of the food chain and feeds on insects, lava lizards, and even small land iguanas. This hawk is relatively large and dark brown and is found on several islands.

How to get there

You should know that in some of the islands there are airports, so getting to Galapagos should not have any inconvenience.  The first step you need to fly to Guayaquil, Ecuador, then you can take a flight from Guayaquil to Baltra airport (GPS), near Santa Cruz Island, or to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno airport (SCY), on San Cristobal Island.

If you arrive in Baltra you will have to take the ferry and then a bus to get to Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz’s main town. 

If you are taking a cruise you have to take a bus from Baltra to the deck(Muelle bus”).

So if you are in the capital of Antioquia these days, you have the opportunity to visit this beautiful township, full of peaceful landscapes and variable climate, where the sun exposes its mountains during the day and at night it disappears under the thick fog.

Brief History

The history of Antioquia, like all regions of Colombia, is deeply marked by the indigenous people and the Spanish colony. As in all the national territory, the area’s first inhabitants were the indigenous communities. Specifically, in what is now the Toledo district, on the banks of the Cauca River inhabited by the Nutabes, under the command of the chief Guarcama, a community prolific in fishing and agriculture. When the conquistadors entered the territory in 1573, the area was known as the “Guarcama Valley”, later renamed “Valle de San Andrés”, in honor of the conquistador Andres de Valdivia, who would be assassinated three years later in territorial disputes with the indigenous people of the region. These confrontations ended at the end of 1580, with the Spanish dominion over the region and the foundation of San Andrés de Cuerquia, (named in honor of the conqueror and the aboriginal roots that originally inhabited the territory), one of the oldest townships of Antioquia, from which Toledo and San José de la Montaña were later detached.

It was not until 1890, after the independence, due to the new political order and the modernizing project of the country, that the hamlet of Toldas was founded, belonging to the municipality of San Andrés de Cuerquia. In 1912 the municipality of Cordoba was founded, separating it from San Andres, and then a year later in 1913 by popular request headed by the conservative Catholic elite, which promoted the economic and social development of the region, the name was changed, for Toledo, because of the many families settled in the area had roots in Toledo, Spain.

Economy

As in most rural municipalities in Colombia, the main economic activity of the region is agriculture, mainly coffee, sugar cane, and avocado.

Likewise, being a constant in rural areas of Colombia, Toledo has also suffered the consequences of violence between guerrillas and paramilitaries and today continues to struggle to recover from the scourges of war. Recently, a mega-project, Hidroituango, a multi-billion dollar hydroelectric power plant that promises to spearhead the region’s development, has unfortunately been hindered by major corruption scandals. But despite these problems the region has seen a full recovery from the conflict. 

Tourism

Toledo and its surroundings are a natural jewel for nature lovers. Sport fishing, hiking, and bird watching are the main tourist attractions in the region. 

Sport fishing in the Cauca River 

The Cauca River is one of the most important rivers of Colombia, it crosses the heart of the country and was and has been one of the sources of economic development of all the regions through which it passes. It is no exception in Toledo, sport fishing has become a sustainable tourism option in the region, currently monitored by the environmental agreement between EPM and the Ituango hydroelectric plant.

Festivities of the Toldas Toledanas 

From November 10 to 14, the Toledan festivities are held, which celebrate the more than 110 years of the municipality. 

It is a cultural and festive week where artistic, cultural, and sporting events are organized. It begins with the dawn on November 10 and ends with the contest of Sancocho Montañero (a typical Colombian dish, which varies depending on the region where it is prepared). There are also curious events such as the “entaconados” (people in heels) race; roller cart races; troubadours and culebreros (people who tell stories in rhymes) contests; and the folkloric dance festival. 

The valley of toledo

It is a district of the municipality of Toledo, the headquarters of HidroItuango. It is characterized by its landscapes of fruit trees and a large number of ecological trails. Many people from Medellin and the country, fond of hiking come to this place to do the hike El Valle-Barrancas-Toledo, 8km of continuous ascent through the mountain, full of greenery and endemic birds of the region. 

Guarcama and Pescadero Valley.

Located 14 kilometers from the municipal capital in the Corregimiento El Valle. The attraction of this site is the natural baths and some constructions of colonial architecture. It is said to be one of the first places where the indigenous and European cultures met. It is an area for camping, fishing, and hunting. The place can be reached on foot, on horseback, or by car. Tourists are recommended to bring camping equipment, fishing equipment, hunting equipment, and clothing for warm weather. There are no restaurants or lodging.

Las Melena’s Park

It is located 7 kilometers from the municipal capital in Vereda el Moral. The attraction of this site is the natural reserve of manes hanging from the trees, adorning the landscape and offering a spectacle of color and unique beauty. The site can be reached on foot or horseback. Tourists are advised to bring a rain tent and camping equipment. It is suggested to wear comfortable clothes that protect from the weather because of its mild climate. There are no restaurants or lodging.
