This is the 12th commission and I love seeing them each year.Their are some amazing photos of the pavilion on the Serpentine Gallery website and also Dezeen . I have included a few photos I took as I loved the reflections and look forward to going back in different weathers between now and October. The text from the Serpentine Gallery website helps explain their concept - 'This year's Pavilion will take visitors beneath the Serpentine's lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Eleven columns characterising each past Pavilion and a twelfth column representing the current structure will support a floating platform roof 1.4 metres above ground. The Pavilion's interior will be clad in cork, a sustainable building material chosen for its unique qualities and to echo the excavated earth. Taking an archaeological approach, the architects have created a design that will inspire visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time across the ghosts of the earlier structures.'

Hyde Park, London

I had a wonderful day cycling round Hyde Park today on the Boris Bikes! It even talks of Kusama's ongoing journey of self-obliteration.The last room was made up of glowing dots, mirrors and water and it was so surreal and powerful to walk through, the room looked like it went on forever and you looked up and it did the same - so clever. This installation is called Infinity Mirrored Room - Filled with the Brilliance of Life - I have included a few photos as we walked through.

Mondrian and Nicholson Exhibition 16th Feb - 20th May

In the afternoon the sun came out...I went over to Somerset House and went into the Courtauld Gallery to see the Mondrian and Nicholson exhibition In Parallel. These two artist work were the most influential to me at Art School so it was so lovely to notice the poster on the underground that this exhibition was on. Somerset House is such an amazing setting for this gallery in the heart of London.I also never realised that they both lived in Hampstead from 1938-1940 when Ben Nicholson found Piet Mondrian a studio next door to his. The exhibition showed how they worked in Parallel exploring similar ideas in very different ways and explored the largely untold relationship between the two artists during the 1930's. They were both leading exponents of geometrical abstraction. It was fascinating and sad to hear that Hampstead was at this time the centre of an important group of international avant-garde artists and it was the outbreak of the Second World War that broke up this community. Nicholson settled in Cornwall and Mondrian New York and it was well summed up in a letter from Mondrian to Nicholson saying 'Thank you so much for your friendship...It was also heartening to me to see that also you kept the confidence in humanity's future - in spite of all the terrible events.'It was also inspiring to see the starkness of their work against the decorative interior of the Courtauld gallery with the floor grills and cornicing details which I have included above. You were not allowed to take photos in the gallery but if you click on the two names you can see examples of their works.

London Shop Windows

Today was a day for getting inspired - London really is an amazing city that offers so much to do and see.It was great walking around looking at all the colours and patterns in shop windows. These photos I took of one area really sum up the bold and intense saturated colours that we can mix with lots of White in our interiors. The craft trend continued as well seeing craft look or hand made items being combined with industrial influences in luminous natural colours. This is a lovely homely look of mixed textures, colours and patterns in a contemporary style. Also there was a lovely luxurious dark lux trend that was very mystical in feel using effortlessly rich and lustrous materials in blacks, greys, taupes, metals and soft metallic beiges - Mixing geometrics and textures.

Happy New Year

We wish you all the best for 2012 from everyone at Sekers.I was in Abu Dhabi for New Year and the lighting at the Coldplay concert was amazing in colour and pattern. I love the way they have had different artists come in over the years and add new sections to the interior space. The latest being one of the Chapel's mural's ' Loaves and Fishes by local artist Miquel Barcelo 2004.The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, is more commonly known as La Seu. It is a Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral designed in the Catalan Gothic Style. It began to be built in 1229 and finished in 1601!'In 1901, fifty years after a restoration of the Cathedral had started, Antoni Gaudí was invited to take over the project. While some of his ideas were adopted – moving the choir stalls from the middle nave to be closer to the altar, as well as a large canopy – Gaudí abandoned his work in 1914 after an argument with the contractor. The planned changes were essentially cosmetic rather than structural, and the project was cancelled soon after'.

Inspiring architecture and art at ES Baluard, Palma

ES Baluard is the modern art gallery in Palma. The mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles, the rood arched like the back of a dragon, the organic shapes and stain glass windows are really inspiring. Antonio Gaudi's i Cornet 1852-1926. His passions were architecture, nature, religion and his love for Catalonia. Gaudi meticulously studied every detail of his creations integrating into his architecture a series of crafts, in which he was skilled such as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork and carpentry.

Drinks and dinner at Hotel Arts Barcelona

The Hotel Arts is a beautiful luxurious hotel, I would like to go back in better weather as it was raining there which meant you didn't get the full experience. I then went on to see the ballet Scheherazade by the Ballet Russes in London were they recreated the Bakst sets and customes, it was a awesome mix of colours and patterns. This ballet was first staged in 1910 which created a sensation and started a fashion imitated by dressmakers and interior designers. His use of simple geometric pattern and use of colour has inspired me in my use of pattern and colour ever since. He was stressing the unique effect of raw colour and movement.‘Every subject, every model, every part of the human body, that is designed without passion, without the joy of life, is a work utterly barren and false. Colour should afford a joy for the eye.’ Leon Bakst. His use of simple geometric patterns, colour and texture and real passion to create something really special and inspiring to the eye has stayed with me in my creation of patterns and my use of texture and colour to create fabrics and wallpaper that really enhance a space and create a beautiful lasting interior for the people that use my product. I love mixing patterns and textures to create interiors that are also a joy to the eye.

Framed by Stuart Haygarth

Also another must see at the V&A during The London Design Festival was 'Framed' by Stuart Haygarth which was a installation piece using picture frames on the grand marble staircase. For those of you that didn't make it we had the Trevira CS fabrics Orienta, Aon and Twister hanging along with the 100% wool Niebla and Tundra with all the fabrics lined with Jewel in cordinating colours which all looked beautiful. The ottomon was in Tundra and foot stools in various new upholsteries. Orienta woodsmoke was my favorite up it looked stunning against the Sekers grey of the stand, the way the woven textures shimmer against the matt ground of this cloth makes it very special - the activeswatch also shows this colourway. The website was also running on the stand so customers could log-in to activate their account for ordering samples online. It was amazing to actually visit the exhibition and see and read all about the meanings behind the works. We then took the boat down to Tate Modern, which is the way to see London. First having lunch in St Pauls which was a superb meal. Going across the bridge gives you great views across the London sites. The restaurant focuses on local suppliers supporting British businesses and local people and wow what a treat it was. They have also recently sponsored some of their very own beehives at the Regents Park apiaries with Pure Food, and it allows them to have their very own wild honey – try it in their gingerbread sandwich which was awesome! Also the Montgomery & rosemary biscuits were a must. The restaurant also has my favorite chairs The Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner 1950.Then onto The Tate to see the installation in the Turbine Hall Miroslaw Balka’s How It Is a box of darkness, it was an amazing weird experience. Miroslaw was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1958. He lives and works in Warsaw and Otwock. You walk into the space not being able to see anything and then at the end hit a velvet wall before turning round to see light as shown in the photo above, it was a very disturbing yet also peaceful experience.Didn't have time to see the Pop Life exhibition so must go back to see that before it ends 17th January.

Geometric Brickwork

Geometric Brickwork seen walking around LondonI love the way all these patterns work together with the different geometric grids of the various brick work styles and the ornate Gothic patterns. There is also a interesting mix of creams, beiges, greys, oranges and blues in the colouring.

The london Eye

A day off being a sightseer! It was a cracking day to go on the London Eye you could see for miles and I got some amazing photos of the London sites, patterns forming and reflections on the way round. I particularly loved the cranes and buildings in the bright yellow, green and oranges in a sea of neutral buildings giving a really fun splash of colour in the distance. There was also a new round building on site which looked fascinating from above - I got some amazing photos once we got off the Eye of these close-up windows shown above that are a play on colour, patterns and textures in the architecture of the building and the reflections of the buildings around it. We then walked round to the Dali exhibition which was a great exhibition of his weird and wonderful work - at the end of the exhibition there was also a Picasso section which had some of his amazing pottery, which was a wee treat at the end!

London Design Festival

The whole of London had a great buzz for the London Design Festival that included the shows Focus, 100% Design and Decorex and shop events across London.

100% Design 24th - 27th September

Went to 100% Design on the first day which was good fun and inspirational. The theatre is set in beautiful grounds with such pretty gardens. Miki Sekers was also one of the Trustees of Glyndebourne. We sat and had our picnic of yummy salads and Pimms with the sheep and then went in to enjoy visually and musically one of the most wonderful Operas I think I have ever seen.Rusalka is a opera written by Dvorak which was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. The designer Rae Smith created wonderful sets and costumes that really set the story off well, with the singers hanging on wires with huge Mermaid tails swinging while singing, dancers dressed as lake weeds moving Rusalka around as if she was swimming while singing and the naughty wood nymphs in paper skirts that rustled as they scampered around were just a few of the highlights.I have always loved this Opera and had studied it for A-Level Theatre Studies which had included costume design. I have included a picture of my Dad in my costume for Vodnik, Rusalka’s Farther. He came swishing onto the stage singing one of the arias and the tail had torches in so it glowed.

Reddy-orange

I love reddy-orange just now. Here are two from Italy that we particularly liked.

The white squirrel

The white squirrel running away did make us laugh on this shop front in Milan!

The narrow streets in Milan

The narrow streets in Milan are colourful if you look up...

Lake Como

Out in Italy at Lake Como for a trade show sourcing fabrics for our new ranges. All the world's best weaving mills are at the show so it is a textile designer's dream. Plus you take the boat to the show each morning which is a real treat, as you are surrounded by such great colour inspiration. There is a wonderful quality of light in Italy. I have included a few photos from the boat trip.

Our window in Bellagio

I love the blues, greens, browns, oranges and yellows that we could see from our window in Bellagio, Italy. The floors and detailing in the stone is amazing.

Straf

Stayed in a cool hotel called Straf in Milan. The use of concrete, distressed textiles and glass was really unusual and helped create a distinct environment that was a real joy to stay in.
