Many people look to us for leadership, and the biggest single thing they are looking for is &ldquo;consistency&rdquo;.</span></span></span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Our children need our leadership through their growing years. My children are now all in their 20&rsquo;s and still yearn for leadership in the form of guidance and consistency. I remember when they were little, they would look with adoring eyes at the things Mum and Dad did for them, and said to them.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Our work environments are no different to our home environments &ndash; we have people looking up to us, and watching every move we make. Our leadership obligation is not optional. We are &ldquo;on show&rdquo; wherever we go and whatever we do.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">As we come to the end of another year of business we start to think about unwinding and enjoying a break with friends and family, but still people are watching.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">There is a difference between &ldquo;unwinding&rdquo; and &ldquo;unravelling&rdquo;. There have been some spectacular &ldquo;falls from grace&rdquo; when people have unravelled in the public eye.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Stephanie Rice had established a great persona as an Olympic Swimmer and was setting herself up for a career in the media spotlight. A little too much to drink brought it all undone. A controversial rant on Twitter led to most of her major sponsors dumping her overnight.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">It&rsquo;s not up to the &ldquo;minders&rdquo; to get us through these situations, it&rsquo;s up to our own leadership to recognise the perils, and take appropriate action.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Just like our businesses have a brand (which we are careful not to damage the brand) we each have a personal brand that needs to be protected.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Grant Hackett damaged his brand when the police were called to his luxury apartment after a big day at the Melbourne Cup recently. Kyle Sandilands lost more than $1 million in Sponsorship when he damaged his personal brand after having a rant on the radio this week. Both the French and Italian Prime Ministers have damaged their personal brands in recent times.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Imagine if you saw any of our last five Prime Ministers at the local shopping mall dressed in a blue singlet with footy shorts and a pair of flip flop thongs on their feet. That would be incongruent with their brand or image. It would also destroy all the efforts they had made in providing leadership to their followers, regardless of your political beliefs.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">Religious leaders and corporate leaders have the same responsibilities. Their leadership is always on show and in uncertain times people look for consistency and leadership.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height: 115%; ">The late Steve Jobs built the Apple brand to what it is today. He didn&rsquo;t do it singlehandedly, he did it by having a great leadership model with an impeccable image. Do you think that if he regularly &ldquo;let his hair down&rdquo; with Friday night drinks that went too far, or showed his team any other shortcomings, that his leadership would have been so compelling? </span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

Our kids look to us for leadership in all areas of their lives. They mimic us, they watch our every move. They become &ldquo;a chip off the old block&rdquo;.</span></span></span></p>

They need a consistent, caring approach to their relationship with you. Even when we&rsquo;re relaxed they are watching us, and desiring leadership. A small chink in our leadership armour now will undo all the good work that we have done in the past eleven months, or longer.</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

One of your clients has just brought in his information for you to prepare his annual Taxation Returns. You notice that there is a new name on the top of his Bank Statements so you ask the obvious question. He replies by saying that he started using a new company during the year (but he still maintained only one set of books).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">The client doesn&rsquo;t think it&rsquo;s such a big deal. You try to explain to him about potential Capital Gains Tax issues, trigger events, value shifting, etc, etc, but he just says &ldquo;I know you will sort it out for me&rdquo;. Or he may say &ldquo;You shouldn&rsquo;t have let me get into this position, I expect you to fix it at no cost to me&rdquo;. </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">Either way, you&rsquo;ve got a problem. Your choices include look for the bottle of scotch, go for the blood pressure tablets, or advise your P.I. insurer, among other things.</span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;<br />
font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">So why is this your fault? Because you have positioned yourself at the wrong end of the communication chain with the client. I know you are busy, &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..and tired, &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.and stressed, but are you really too busy to do your job properly? </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">Your clients need to see you as their <strong>Business Coach</strong>, not just their Accountant. In fact, you have spent your whole adult life honing your skills, just so you can be &ldquo;second best&rdquo;. </span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">You probably spend all your available time tending to the compliance needs of your clients so that you just don&rsquo;t physically have time to offer them additional services.</span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">Enter the Business Coach.&nbsp; He probably comes from outside the Accountancy profession. He has bought a franchise, got some marketing training, and is knocking on your clients&rsquo; doors. </span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">He is not qualified to offer compliance services. He is not even interested in offering compliance services. Why would he be when he can come in and take the cream? The parts that the Accountant is too busy to provide. </span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">Sounds like the easy road to the top, if you ask me.</span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">When you look at it that way, maybe Business Coaches have outsmarted Accountants. Whose fault is that? The Government for increasing the compliance burden? NO, it is our fault as Accountants for becoming complacent.</span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">How do you think Business Coaching as a profession came into being? Someone saw a need that wasn&rsquo;t being met, and met it. It&rsquo;s that simple. Accountants were not meeting their clients&rsquo; needs, other Accountants were also too busy to attract clients away from their competitors. So, as a profession, Accountants became complacent. </span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-AU" style="line-height: 115%; ">This created a perfect opportunity for a predator to attack the industry. And the Business Coach was born. The Business Coach now does the quality &ldquo;high impact&rdquo; advice, while the Accountants fight over the compliance work.</span></span></span><span lang="EN-AU" style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

The winner is determined by&nbsp;votes registered by their clients or customers. This is really a very public survey of client&nbsp;satisfaction.</span></p>
<p>Are you prepared for such a public viewing of your practice?</p>

<div>Strangely, you could score well on a client satisfaction survey, <strong><em>but still not giving them what&nbsp;they really want and need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em></strong>Let me explain.</div>

<div>Your clients may be happy with the level of compliance based services you provide, and score you accordingly. At the same time <strong>they may be screaming out for advice on marketing, personnel, funding, succession, and a whole range of other issues.</strong></div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>The problem is they have fairly and squarely put you in the &#39;compliance&#39; box, they may even refer to you as &#39;the bean counter&#39;. They are oblivious to the fact that you can help them in so many other ways. They may even be seeking this type of advice from people less qualified than you.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>How do you think your <strong>Client Satisfaction</strong> would rate if you just worked very closely with a small group of hand picked clients?</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<ul>
<li>You would get to know exactly what each client&rsquo;s needs were&nbsp;</li>
<li>You would be able to develop a strategy to meet those needs at every level.</li>
<li>You would get&nbsp;very close to a perfect score.</li>

<div><strong>But you&rsquo;re probably too busy doing compliance work to think about your clients&rsquo; needs right now. </strong>How do I know? Because I&rsquo;ve been there too. That was, until I found a better way to run my Accounting Practice.</div>

<div>I used to have $5,000 clients referring their friends to me. <em>I now have $50,000 clients referring their friends to me</em>. Their satisfaction levels have skyrocketed, and so has mine.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">You might think &ldquo;Competition&rdquo; is the new young aggressive Accountant that has just set up shop in your town.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">But there is an even bigger threat that you might not be aware of. They are more dangerous to you than competitors. I call them &ldquo;predators&rdquo;. No, they are not the Big 4 International Accounting Firms.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">They are the plethora of <strong>Business Coaches</strong> invading your space. These are the people that you REALLY need to protect your business against. They have no interest in doing boring, compliance type work. They only want the stimulating &ldquo;sexy&rdquo; consulting work. But this is exactly the type of work that you should be providing to your clients, and you should be doing it right now.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">You have the formal accounting skills, you have the client&rsquo;s trust, so you should be the first point of contact for &ldquo;all things business&rdquo;.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Some of these Business Coaches have paid upwards of $300,000 to buy a franchise. They have been given some marketing training, and they are now actively pursuing clients&#8230;..<u> <em><strong>your</strong></em></u><em><strong> clients.</strong></em></div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Even as you read this, there could be a Business Coach networking with one of your clients at a local business gathering.<strong> </strong></div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div><strong>Is your client likely to ask you about Business Coaching? </strong>NO. For two reasons.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<ul>
<li>Firstly, He may not see it as your area of expertise (you&rsquo;re the compliance guy),<br />
		&nbsp;</li>
<li>Secondly, the coach has probably pre-empted the client by saying something like &ldquo;Accountants don&rsquo;t understand this stuff&#8230;&rdquo;</li>
</ul>
<div id="_mcePaste">How would you feel if next year you are preparing your client&rsquo;s Annual Financial Statements and you charge them $3,000 &#8211; $5,000, just like you have for the last few years? But while you are reviewing their information you discover that they have paid $30,000 to a Business Coach since last time you saw them, AND they are singing his praises!</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong>NOT HAPPY!!!</strong></div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>But whose fault is that? That extra $30,000 in fees should have been your income, not the coach&rsquo;s. They should be singing your praises, not the coach&rsquo;s. Their successes should be your source of inspiration and satisfaction, not the coach&rsquo;s.</div>

<div><em><strong>If only you could get off this compliance treadmill, you would have the time to use these skills you have.</strong></em></div>

<div>Then I discovered a better way to do things. As a result I was able to morph my &ldquo;general&rdquo; Accounting Practice into a &ldquo;boutique&rdquo; Accounting Practice.</div>

They all seem to indicate that accountants lack people skills, which is not true.&nbsp;Sure, you are great with all the numerical stuff, but you have got so much more to offer.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">If you are running your own Accounting Practice, you didn&rsquo;t get there without using people skills.</div>

<div>Do you think that your clients would respect and trust you, if you didn&rsquo;t have the skills to communicate with them? To be a successful principal in public practice you must have drive, enthusiasm, commitment, and people skills.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">The next time someone offends (or humours) you by telling an Accountant Joke, reply with an Engineer Joke, because they make Accountants look good.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">But seriously, people skills are critical to making a success of the Accountant-Client relationship. The trouble is you are probably so busy coping with the mountain of compliance work that you don&rsquo;t have time to stop and think about your clients&rsquo; needs and expectations.</div>

<div>No matter how good you are, if you are distracted or distressed you won&#39;t come across in the best possible light. This is in any situation &ndash; at work, at home, on the golf course, anywhere.</div>
<div><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">When stressed we tend to retreat back to our safety zone. For accountants this is in the world of certainty, introversion &amp; pessimism.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>So doesn&rsquo;t it make sense to reduce our stress levels so that we can operate with all our skills, not just our basic skills?</div>
<div><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">These are some common stresses that you might encounter</div>
<ul>
<li>lodgement deadlines,</li>
<li>huge office overheads,</li>
<li>costs of non-chargeable employees,</li>
<li>administrative duties, etc</li>
</ul>
<p>All this stress can mean that often you don&rsquo;t connect properly with your clients. Possibly there are some clients that you make time for and, funnily enough, I&#39;ll bet these clients generate the most fees for you.</p>
<p><em><strong>&quot;The more time I took to think about their situations, the more I was able to add value to their businesses.&quot;</strong></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">.</span></p>
<div id="_mcePaste">I was on to something. These guys liked me, and I liked them, because I took the time to understand them. It occurred to me that if I had the time to do this properly for more people I would have a better business.</div>

<div>I created a business where I could focus on hand picked clients to find out exactly what they needed, and then give it them in a meaningful and real way and before long my top six clients were producing the same bottom line as I used to generate from 300 clients&#8230;.</div>

<div>Anyone that preaches practice growth and profitability would say &ldquo;No&rdquo;. I have been hearing this story since 1981 when I first became a Partner in a six partner CPA firm, yet compliance based practices still exist.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">More to the point, is there REAL job satisfaction in a &ldquo;Compliance Based&rdquo; Accounting Practice? Some will say &ldquo;Yes&rdquo;, and that&rsquo;s fine. Most accountants have similar personality traits, which means they have a eye for detail and tend towards perfectionism. They get a warm feeling when they complete their client&rsquo;s annual Financial Statements, bind them up, raise the invoice, neaten up the file, and put it away again. Another job well done.</div>

<div>People who are wired like this will always be buyers of compliance based practices, and that&rsquo;s a GOOD thing. Let me explain.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">My firm used to lodge 2,000 Tax Returns each year. <em>I now lodge less than 100 each year</em>, <strong>but I make considerably more money than I used to</strong>. Another local firm happily paid top dollar for the fees I no longer needed. They were geared up for compliance work and the extra fees were very attractive to their business model.</div>

<div>This gave me time to develop my &lsquo;hand picked&rsquo; clients into true lifetime clients that continually ask, and pay for, more of the top end services that create TRUE job satisfaction for me.</div>

By a careful selection process, and then really getting to understand these clients&rsquo; needs, <strong>I was able to grow the fees base by over 400%</strong>. And the clients couldn&rsquo;t be happier!! They gladly pay for the things they really want from their most trusted advisor.</div>

<div>And what is it these clients really want? <strong>Coaching, Mentoring, Strategy, Accounting</strong>. In that order.<br />

<div>Your formal training and qualifications mean that you have a great foundation for providing these services. I still enjoy completing a set of accounts, but I get so much more satisfaction when I see a client achieve a goal that I have helped him set and given him the tools and strategies to achieve that goal.</div>
